TheHolyFather hasorderedthatSt. Joseph,foster-father ofJesus,behonoured inMassesaccording totheRomanRiteby havinghisnameincludedinthebodyof theCanon.

ThePope'sdecisionwas revealedatthe18thgeneral meetingoftheSecondVaticanCouncil.CardinalCicognani,presidentoftheCouncil'sSecretariatforExtraordinaryAffairs,whomade theannouncement,saidthe nameofSt.Josephwillfirst beincludedinthecanonof theMassofthefeastofthe ImmaculateConception,on December8.

tobeinsertedfollowingthat oftheBlessedVirginMary intheCommunicantes,the thirdprayeraftertheSanctus,whichvoicesthefellowshipofChristiansjoiningin offeringthe,EucharisticSaccrificetodaywithsaintswho havegonebeforethem.Thus St.Joseph'snamewillprecedethoseoftheapostles andadozenearlymartyrs connectedwiththeChurch ofRome.

Cardinal Cicognanisaid thatPopeJohndecided1,1 gi-eSt.Josephthenew honourtoputitonrecord thattheSecondVatican Councilsohonouredits patron. Thereisalreadyaspecial PrefacetotheCanonwhich honoursSt.Josephand whichissungorreadin festalandvotiveMassesof St.Joseph.

ThePope'sactiondidnot comeoutoftheblue.Over ayearago,itwasrevealed thatapetitionwasbeingcirculatedinItalyandabroad askingthatSt.Josephbe givengreaterhonourat Masses.Thepetitionwas saidtohavebeensignedby sometwohundredhigh Churchofiicials,including cardinalsandbishops,and byhundredsofthousandsof otherpersons.

ThepetitionaskedthatSt. Joseph'snamebeincluded intheConfiteor(thegeneral confession),theSuscipe SanctaTrinitas(Receive,0 HolyTrinity),theCommunicantes,andtheLibera,Nos (Deliverus)attheconclusionoftheLord'sPrayer.

CardinalCicognaniinhis announcementdidnotmentiontheprayersotherthan theCommunicantes.Itwas presumedthatthewhole questionwouldbeclarified bydecreesexpectedfrom theSacredCongregationof Rites.

VaticanRadionotedthatmanyothermothershave gabouredtenderlytoprotectchildrenwithsimilar defects.Thenitwarnedthathumanrightshavebeen violated.

"Abreachwasopenedinthebulwarkwhichprotectedtheweak,thefrail,thephysicallyhandicapped, theoldandthesick,"thecommentatorsaid."Aninjury wasinflictedonthemostsacred,themostinviolableof allrights-therighttolife."

InanearlycommentaryonNovember7,shortlyafter thetrialopened,VaticanRadioreiteratedthatthe murder,ofadeformedinfantisunjustifiable.

Theinitialcommentarydidnotspecificallymention thetrial.VaticanRadiosaidthatonecannotteacha mothertoloveherownchildren,because"naturehas madehersupremeinloving."Onemayunderstandthe follyofamotherwhokillsherchild,itstated,but cannotjustifywhatshedoes.

Itadded:"Objectivelyandmorallysuchanactsuggeststherefusaltofacelife'sdailypains.Itrepresents rebellionagainstthelawofnatureandthelawofGod, Whoislove."

VerdictWidelyCriticisedInPress

MAJOREUROPEANNEWSPAPERSofdiverseoutlookhavetakenissuewiththenot-guiltyverdictof theBelgiancourt.

TheSundayLaCroix,Catholicweeklypublishedin Paris,statedflatlythathumanlife"comesfromGod andonlyGodcandisposeofit."Butthepapercalled onChristianstosustainparentsindistressratherthan abandonthem.

TheObserver,theLondonweeklywhichisoneof :Britain'smostinfluentialnewspapers,saidtheLiege verdictwas"humanitarianbutlegallyindefensible."

InMilan,theindependentCorrieredellaSerasaid

theBelgiancourt"simplyforgotthesacredcharacter ofhumanlifeandtheobligationtorespectandpreserve itevenwhensnuffingitoutseemedanactofmercy," AndtheFalangistorganArribainMadridlabelled theacquittal"aperniciousconfusionofjusticewith sentimentalism."

LaCroix,initsfront-pageeditorial,saidthatbecause ofthalidomide,theLiegetrialwasineffectthepointing ofthefingerofaccusationatscience.

Dr.HonnerwasattendingadinnerintheAustraliaHoteltomarktheannualreunionweekendat LewishamHospital.

Thedinnerhadfollowed twodaysofscientificlecturingandDr.Honnerwas proposingthetoasttothe hospitalofwhichhewas seniorsurgeon. Aged62,hehadpreviouslysufferedthreecoronaryocclusions.

Anex-studentofSt. Joseph'sCollege,Hunter's Hill,Dr.Honnergraduated M.B.,Ch.M.fromSydney Universityin1922.

Publicschoolteachers wereexpresslyforbiddenby the1880acttogivereligious instruction.Butoverthe yearsteacherswerefirst allowedtosuperviselimited instructioninChristianity. Nowtheteachersthemselves givetheinstructions.

Thecontroverysnow cenresonthemeaningof theword"secular"inthe mindsofthelegislatorsof the1880act.Proponentsof thesystemsaythatthose lawmakersdidnotintend thatreligionassuchshould beexcludedfromState schools,butonlythatthe teachingshouldnotfavour anyparticulardenomination.Thosewhoopposethe systemholdthattheact meansthatChristianinstructionshouldbeexcluded. Withallthehumourandthetouchingseriousnessof thereports,withalltheclappingandcheering,there seemedtobeatthesametimeadeepspontaneityand freshnessaboutthewordsofpraisewhichonegroup offeredtotheother.Italmostseemedtoaninterested observerthatthiswasarareexperienceforthem,orat lastrarerthanitshouldbe,andthatbothgroups welcomedtheopportunitytosayniceandtruthful thingsabouteachother.

Sincebothparentsandteenagersarehumanbeingsandthisissometimeshardforonetoacceptaboutthe other-thereisfrequentlythehumandifficultyin offeringwordsofpraisesandgratitudewhichwouldn't soundmawkishandinsincere.Therelativeanonymity ofthegroupreportsallowedacertainfreedomof expressionofthoughts,andfeelingswhichwashealthy.

Perhapsallofusoughttotakealittletimeouteach daytoconsiderthepeopleinourlivesandthankthem forwhattheyareandforwhattheyaredoing.Group discussionisfine,butone-to-onediscussionisbetter. Maybeifeachoneofusgotmoreusedtopraisingand thankingGodeachday,itwouldbeeasiertopraiseand thankeachother.

Throughoutthecountry, advertisingfirmshave giventhegroupfree spaceontheirhoardings fortheposters. Some40,000smaller Postersarebeingissued fordisplayinfactories, officesandclubs.The groupplanstopayits expensesbysellinga millionChristmasseals.

hadbeenpromised.ACatholicmemberwhomadeplywoodcut-outshadsoldout. Ourmaindevotionalstore hadonesetwhichwas wantedforitsownwindow. AndpaperfigureswhichI hadorderedfromAmeridlt hadnotarrived. ItoldtheY.C.W.folkthat itlookedasthoughthey wouldhavetoborrow models,etc.,fromthestores andmakeuptheirown Nativitycharacters. MissKathiethenasked: "WhatabouttheManger?" recalledthatsomeofthe Campaign'smaterialhad beenstoredattherearofa Presbyterianchurch.Kathie couldpickitup,thencontactaMr.G.Hodgson,a builderandagreatcampaignerforChristatChrist. mas.Thetypicalmanger wasinduecourseconstructedwhiletheproblemofthe figuresremainedunsolved.

Then"hurrah,"thephone rangagainwithonlyabout eightdaystogo.Thevoice: "Iunderstandtheobtaining offiguresforaCribinthe Cathedralgroundshasgot youworried."Ireplied, "Yes,butwithouttheloss ofhope." IRANGMissKathieat once,advisedheraccordinglyandarranged,toher obviousjoy,totakedelivery twodayshence.So,inplenty oftimefortheMostHoly Night,averybeautifulCrib with12brand-newNativity figureswassitedquiteclose tothefootpathonthevacant landadjoiningtheCathedral. That'snotall-thetree, whichisjustafewfeetfrom thefootpath,shouldbe decorated,illuminated,and itwas,withtheapprovalof theAdministratorandthe financeprovidedbyanumberofCatholicbusiness men.

Thewholethinglooked magnificent.Howmany adoredwhohadnotdoneso beforeisknowntothe DivineChildonly.Froma mostreliablesource,itis thoughtthatthisCathedral ispossiblytheonlyonein Australiathathasapine treeinitssideyardandthat itisveryfeasiblethatthis couldbefirst,i.e.,anAustralianCathedralwithan exteriorChistmasCrib.

DuringChristmasweekI observedthatthethree Kingsweremissing-had theybeenstolen? Iwas abouttoringthepolice whenaY.C.W.executive

oftheseasonopenedwith "TheReturnofLemminkcainen,"asymphonic poembySibeliuswhich provedmuchlesstedious thanthebetter-known ones, Itwasafinevehiclefor thevisitingconductor,Dean Dixon,demonstratinghis tautcontroloftheorchestraandhisinsistenceoninstrumentaldetail.

Thiswasevidencedeven moreinthefinalworkofthe evening,theBrahmsFirst, particularlyintheinner movementswhereBrahms islesshauntedbytheghost ofBeethovenandwherehis lyricqualitiesweremorein evidence.Itisimpossibleto bringoutthearchitectural qualitiesofBrahmswitha smallorchestraand,instead, DeanDixonshowedhis geniusbybringingoutnew beautiesinanoldfavourite.

Dwellingonthedetailof phrases,however,doestend toslowthingsdownand Haydn'sSymphonyNo.104, thelastofanobleline,sufferedfromanAndante whichwassolanguorousas tobelaboured.Apartfrom that,Dixon'sinterpretation reflectedthedeephappiness ofHaydn,acharacteristic whichseemstobeatadiscountamongmusic-lovers: thereisnosullenegoto Haydn,whoseprofundities arealwaysfelicitous.

THE"MORO"TRIBE

InAugustanItalianSalesianmissionary,Father BrunoStella,succeededfor thefirsttimeinenteringinto contactwiththe"Moro" tribe,whichisthewildest andfiercestintheimpenetrablesemi-desertregionin north-westParaguay.

ForseveralyearstheSalesianshadtriedtomakethis contact,buthadalwaysbeen receivedwithashowerof arrows-oneoccasiona Brotherhadanarrow throughhisarm.Moreover, threeyearsago,aProtestant missionarywassavagely killedbythistribe.

Theprovidentialmeansof realisingthiscontactwasa young"Moro."Josephhad beentakenprisonerseven yearsago,placedinthecare oftheSalesiansandhad beeneducatedbyFather Stellahimself.Hishelpwas decisive-assoonashe caughtsightofthe"Moros" hidinginbushes,theyouth rushedtowardsthemshoutingintheirownlanguage.

Therestoftheprogramme couldnotpossiblymatch suchbeauty.Thefirsthalf endedwith"SoftlyAwakes MyHeart,"bySaint-Saens, whichbroughtthegreatest applauseoftheeveningfrom thethinaudience;Icould notseewhy,unlesstheaplausewasforthewholeof thefirsthalfoftherecital.
