UnityBody'sStatus

TheSecretariatforPromotingChristianUnity, whichnowhasaCouncil statusequaltothatofits tencommissions,isexpected tobemaintainedasapermanentbranchoftheVaticanheadquartersstaff.Its activitiesarelikelytobe expandedonaworld-wide basis.

Asaconsequence,local effortsundertakeninmany countriestopavetheway forconstantlygrowinginterfaithcontactswillbegiven newincentives.

Asoneobserverexpressed it:"Theroadaheadtowards Christianunityislongand arduous,butbyGod'sgrace theprogressalreadymade issimplyastounding.Now wemustnotrelax,butcarry onwithconfidenceand courage."

CardinalTappouni,the presidentatthe13thmeeting,proposedtoenddiscussionofthesecondchapterof theliturgicalproposals.The votewasaffirmative.

Discussionofthethird chapterthenbeganwith20 Fathersspeaking,including CardinalRuffini,Archbishop ofPalermo,andCardinal CentoandCardinalBrowne, O.P.,oftheVaticanadministrativestaff.

Thethirdchapterhasa briefintroductionandeight articlessubdividedinto21 parts.Ingeneral,thesedeal withtheliturgicalaspectof thesacramentsratherthan withdoctrinalmatters.The aimofthechapteristoincreasetheunderstandingof thesignificanceandeffects oftheindividualsacraments.

Amongthematterstreated aretherevisionsofbooksof ritual,thepreparationnecessaryforreceptionofthe varioussacraments,sacramentalsandfuneralceremonies.

Attheeleventhmeeting,theCouncilpressbulletin reported,theFatherssaidthatMasssermonsshouldbe briefbutsubstantial."TheystatedthattheScriptures shouldhaveagreaterpartintheMassandsuggested thatthebooksoftheScripturescouldbedividedovera cycleofyearstopermitpreacherstocoverthemajor truthsoftheFaithbycommentingonthetextsofthe variousdays'Masses.

Thebulletinsaiditwasstatedatthemeetingthat"it isnecessarytoemphasisethefirstpartoftheMass,the teachingpartorMassoftheCatechumens,anduniteit morecloselywiththesecondpart,theSacrificeproper."

TheFatherssaidthedialogueMassshouldbepromoted,butthatthosepresentshouldnot"bedeprived ofthosemomentsofrecollectionwhich,favourpersonal piety."

ThebulletinreportedthattheFathersstressedthe needforcautionin"revisingwords,gesturesand prayerswhichhaveacquiredgreatnobilityinthepassingofthecenturieswithoutlosinganythingoftheir originalsignificance."

TRIBUNALPRELATESNAMED

Beforethetwelfthsession,theCouncil'sgeneral secretary,ArchbishopPericleFelici,readthenames ofthetenprelatesnamedbythePopetotheCouncil's administrativetribunal.

Atthethirteenthmeeting,discussionofthesecond chapteroftheliturgy)proposals,whichdealtwiththe Mass,wasendedanddiscussionofthethirdchapter dealingwiththesacramentsandsacramentalswas begun.Theaimofthethirdchapteristoincrease understandingofthesignificanceandeffectsofthe individualsacraments.

Thebulletinreportedthatcautionwasurgedin changingthelituigicalaspectsofthesacramentsandit wasstressedthattheintelligibilityofthesacraments shouldbethekeynoteofdiscussions.

AtthetwelfthmeetingArchbishopFeliciappealed totheCouncilFatherstobebriefintheirspeechesand nottodealwithmattersalreadycovered.Thefollowing dayheinstructedFatherstopresentalongwithrequests tospeakasummaryofwhattheyintendtosay.This wasseenasawaytogivetheCouncil'sgeneralsecretariatanopportunityofadvisingspeakersthatwhat theywanttosayhasalreadybeendealtwithbyanother speaker.

ArchbishopFelicialsoannouncedthatthePopehad giventhepresidencyofthe'Counciltherighttopropose terminationofdiscussiononaspecificpointwhenit judgesthematterhasbeensufficientlydiscussed.

TO. ThebehaviourofItalians inchurchoftensurprises foreigners.Partofthe reasonisthatItalians,so theywilltellyou,make themselvesathomein God'shouse-andsucha relaxedattitudecanseem irreverenttothesewho haveaseverertraining.

Butitisnotmerelya matterofattitude.The structureofthechurches oftenmilitatesagainstparticipationintheMass.When Massisbeingcelebratedat themainaltarandconcurrentlyatfivesidealtars.the ringingofthebellsalone makesitseemfiresare breakingoutalloverthe city. Addtothisthattourists wanderaroundthechurches duringtheceremoniesand photographersseemtohave rightstoclamberoverthe altaratanytime,andthe relaxedattitudecomesclose toindifference.

ChoiceofChurches

THEmultiplicityof churchesincitiessuchas Romemakesparishorganisationalmostanimpossibility-asmostpeoplehave achoiceofatleasthalfa dozenchurcheswithineasy walkingdistanceeachSunday,apriesthaslittlehope ofgettingtoknowamoreor lessstablecongregation.

Oneoftheresultsofthis isthatparishlifeseems strongerinRome'snew peripheralsuburbsthanin thecentreofthecity.

NewRomeoroldRome, acrucialpartoftheMassis thesermon,AlthoughItaly itfamousforitspowerful malesingers,itspriestsare apparentlyincapableoftalkingtoevenasmallcongregationwithoutamicrophone.

consolation,buthadfounditadesolatingexperience. thatwhichallowscameramentoswingaroundthe altarlikemonkeysduringa ceremony,liesbehindthis devotiontothemicrophone, whichalwaysdistortsthe voice.

Thesermoniscrucialfor it4contentaswell.Onepart oftheclergyisstillcommittedtoaweeklydoseof ferventrecommendationsfor thegoodlifeandtheyare partlytoblameforthefact thatwhileCatholicsentimentsarewidespreadin Italy,therearesurprising, gapsinmanypeople'sknowledgeofCatholicteaching. Suchpriestsare,moreoften thannot,victimsofthesystem.Theyprobablyentered aseminaryataveryearly age,wheretheyhadtosubsistonadietofpiousexaltations.

Theremainderofthe clergygiveinstructional sermonswhichareafunctionalpartoftheMass.The Councilisexaminingthe questionoflinkingthe liturgywiththelifeofthe peopleandtheItaliansituation,asmuchasanyother, givespointtotheendeavour.

Thebriefdescriptionof Romanpracticesgivenhere maybetoosweeping,but figuresfromvariousparts ofItalyconfirmtheimpressionthatonlywomenand theveryyoungattendMass regularly.

FiguresDepressing

ANALYSESofattendances atMassarenotreadilyavailablebecausereligioussociologyisnotashighlydevelopedhereasinFrance andbecausetheresultsof enquiriesaresometimesnot published.Themostdepressingfigurescomefrom aparishinRomagnawhere onlyonepercentofthe populationattendtheSundayMass.Extensiveenquiriesinbiggercentres, suchasMilanandBologna, inrecentyearsrevealedthat 30and29.5percentof CatholicsattendedSunday Mass-whichwascloseto thefigureof25-30percent forRomewhichtwoJesuits arrivedatafterenquiries madesomeyearsago. ThemajoroppositionpartyintheNew SouthWalesState Parliamenthasrejectedaproposalthat thepartysupport directaidtoprivate schools.

THELIBERALPARTY MEMBERSOFTHESTATE PARLIAMENTREAFFIRMEDTHEPARTY'SPOLICY OFOPPOSITIONTO DIRECTSTATEAIDFOR INDEPENDENTSCHOOLS.

Thememberstookthe standafterconsideringa reportoftheLiberalparty's joinpolicy-ommitteerecommendingsuchaid.

Thedecisionwastakenona voicevote,butaspokesman saidthatan"overwhelming majority'favouredit. Thejointpolicycommittee-madeupofsevenrepresentativesoftheLiberal party'sStateCounciland sevenLiberalpartymembersofParliament-cannot

decideonpolicy,butcan onlyrecommendit.

TheStateCouncil,which meetsinNovember,candecideonpolicy,butitisreportedthatthebodyisnot likelytochangethepolicy setbythemembersofParliament. Thejointpolicycommitteeattemptedtochangethe party'sstandinthelast StateelectionsinMarch,but wasunsuccessful.Theparty limiteditssupportthento indirecthelptoprivate schools.

Aheatedcontroversy brokeoutinJulywhensix CatholicschoolsinGoulburn,NewSouthWales, closedforaweekinprotest againstthelackoffinancial supportfromtheStategovernment.

Thecontroversyflaredup againwhenCardinalGilroy, ArchbishopofSydney,made arequestonSeptember10 toNewSouthWalesPremier RobertJ.Heffronforaidto privateschools,TheCardinal'sproposalincluded scholarships,helpinpaying salaries,andassistancein scienceprogrammes.Mr. Heffronisalsoleaderofthe StateparliamentaryAustralianLaborparty,whichopposeddirectaidtoprivate schoolsintheMarchelectionsandwasreturnedto headthegovernmentwith anincreasedmajority.

Themaleswhoattend Mass,withfewexceptions, areoldmen,husbandswho goforthesakeofdecorum andboysuntiltheageof 12or13.Itisobviousthat nolayinitiativewould remedythisstateofaffairs, buttheSalesianFathers haveattemptedtomeetthe challengebyopeninga "MoralandReligiousConsultationCentre"underthe directionoftheirpsychology institute.

Thefounderanddirector ofthecentre,DonPierGiovanniGrasso,hasdeveloped aservicewhichwaspreviouslythesoleprovinceof peoplesuchasDorothyDix andDearAbby.Butwhereas thoseserviceswereconductedbyoneperson,inpublic andwithoutanyadmitted creedasapointofreference,E.C.C.M.R.,asthe centreisknown.employs 200experts,bothlayand religious,toanswerquestions,therepliesaresentin strictestprivacy,anditacknowledgesitsCatholic basis. TheE.C.C.M.R.hasoffices thoughoutItalyandifany casecannotbesatisfactorily handledbyletter,thepersonconcernedisinvitedto attendthenearestE.C.C.KR.officeforpersonal helpbyaspecialist. Thethousandsofrequests forhelpwhichtheE.C.C.M.R.receivesshowthatthe Italyoftheeconomic miraclewherenewwealth ischangingoldrelationships andpeoplearemovingfrom theSouthtotheNorth,as wellasfromthecountryto thecities,needsjustsucha centre.

ANItalianweeklyhasrevealedthattheFatherAntonioofaCalabrianmonasterywasformerlyLeroy Lehman,oneofthecrew membersoftheB29bomber whichdroppedthefirst atomicbombonHiroshima.

AccordingtotheItalian report,Lehmancouldnot liberatehimselffromthe thoughtofthedestruction hehadwroughtonthat morningofAugust6,1945, anddecidedtodevotehis lifetopenanceinreparation.

ThecaseofFatherAntonio,orLeroyLehman,has itssignificanceforeachof us.Hehasrecognisedthat someonemustbearthe blameforHiroshima-andif thisisnotrecognisedthere arelikelytobemoreHimshimas.Moreover,Lehman's

decisiontoenteramonasterythrowsnewlighton thesufferingofClaude Eatherly,whoflewthelead planeoverHiroshima.

Hauntedbythe100,000 victims,Eatherlytriedto destroytheAmericanimage ofhimselfasawarheroby engaginginaseriesof crimes,butinsteadofbeing punishedashehoped,he wasgivenpsychiatrictreatment.

Thepsychiatriststriedto tellEatherlythatheshould notblamehimself,buta Germanphilosopher,GuntherAnders,hearingofhis case,wrotetohimsayingthat"becausetheworldis begrudgingyouthisguilt, you man."remainanunhappy Eatherlywas"guiltlessly guilty."Hisnightmarishexperience,andLeroyLeh- man'schoiceshowthat nuclearwarthreatensnot onlyphysicaldestructionbut alsothemoraldegeneration ofthosewhoemployit. Thisisrecognisedina lettertoEatherlywrittenby thirtyJapanesegirlswhose facesandbodieswereinjuredbytheblast:"Wehave learnedtofeeltowardsyou afellow-feeling,thinkingthatyouarealsoavictim ofwar,likeus."

Theresolutionadopted bytheAustralianNational CouncilofWomeninconferenceinPerthinAugust thisyear"thataworld programmeofeducation forfamilyplanningshould beencouragedasauniversalefforttocopewith theenormousproblemof worldpopulationincrease" callsforastatementon ourviewpointasCatholic womencitizensofAustralia.

AsresponsibleCatholic womencitizensofAustralia, wedonotcloseoureyesto theproblemsofrapidincreaseofpopulationincertainareasoftheworldoutsideAustralia.

Weareappalledatthe hunger,diseaseandpoverty ofmanymillionsofhuman beings,God'speople,andare sensitiveofourresponsibilitiesascitizensofavastcontinentpopulatedbylessthan elevenmillioninhabitants.

Sincethesearethesameparentswhoarealways beingpressuredwith,"Whycan'tI?""Everyoneelse isgoing,""You'rejustold-fashioned,""Youjustdon't wantmetohaveanyfun,"or,therealclincher,"Don't youtrustme?"-youcanunderstandtheirslownessto acceptthefirststatementsascomingfromthelipsof theirteenagers. Butthefactofthematteristhatadolescentswant twothings.Theywantthefoullinessetupsothey knowwheretheystand.Iftheykeeptestingtheguidelines,itispartlytofindoutiftheyarestillthere. Equally,itiswiththehopethat,bystretchingthem, theywillbelessrestrictedastheygrowolder. TheOldTestmentJewswereveryfamiliarwiththe facithatPharaohhadhisheart"hardened"becausehe wouldnotfollowtheDivineCommandand:"LetMy peoplAgo."ManytimestheLord,throughplaguesand wonder,hadproventhetruthofHiswords,which Pharaohcouldnotdoubt,andyeteachmiraclehardened hisheart.TheverythingswhichtheLordsentto convincePharaohandtosoftenhisheart,werethevery causesthatmadehimmorestubborn.Manyanadversityoragraceorblessingwhichissenttobringman tohissense,maybe,throughhisresistance,themeans ofhisbecomingmorefoolishorobstinate.Amessage maybesentinlove,andyetitmayprovokethehearer; becausehewillnotacceptthetruth,heturnsagainstthe onewhospeaksit.Everymotherisfamiliarwiththis peculiarpsychologicalfactindealingwithchildren. Eachshowofaffectiontoastubbornorangrychild provokeshimthemore.

Piousinspirationstogoodnessandsolicitationsto abandonanevilway,whichfloodconscience,areoften putaside.Butifconsciencerejectsgoodandprefers evil,amomentcomeswhenthemultiplicationofevil choicesproduceshardeningoftheheart.

CONSCIENCEBLUNTEDBYPERVERSITY

WhenChristwalkedthisearth,therewerethosewho sawHisPowerwhenHedidgoodandcondemnedtheir evil.But"theybesoughtHimtodepartfromtheir shores."ThetwodisciplesclosesttoOurLordseem tohavebeenJohnandJudasIscariot;theoneleaned uponthebreastoftheSaviour;theotherdippedhis handwithHiminthedishasamarkoffriendship.But theonewasexaltedtoaspiritualityrarelyattainedby man:theothersanktosuchaconditionthattheLord saidhewasadevil.Bothelevationanddegradationare equallynatural.Theonecomesfromtheimitationof thehighexamplebeforeus;theotherfromresistingthe impulsetosuchimitation.Consciencethenbecomes blunted;thereislesssensitivenesstotheimpulsesof good,andfinally,thereishardeningoftheheart.

Thehardeningofconscienceisareminderthatevery humanbeingisfreetochoosebetweengoodandevil. Consciencetellsusifwedecidedwronglywhenit accusesusofguilt.Theverycondemnationofconscience isatestimonyoffreedomofthewill.Therewouldbe noaccusingvoicewithinifwedidnotfeelthatwewere freeagents.

BishopDuschaksaidhe spokenotasaliturgyexpert butasa"practicalmissionary."Hehasspentmore thanthirtyofhis59years inthePhilippines.

TheBishopemphasised thatheisnotagainstLatin. "IlovetheLatinlanguage," hestated."Itisandshould remainthelanguageofthe Church."

Buthesaidthatanunfamiliarlanguagesuchas Latinoranyothertongue otherthanthatofthepeople "deprivesthepeopleoftheir righttoparticipateinthe Mass."

Hesaidhisideaforan ecumenicalMassisfounded ontwopremises-thatrites areman-madeandthatthe Massshouldbebasedonthe firstMass,theLastSupper. HesaidChrist'scommand attheLastSupper,"Dothis incommemorationofme," hasfourconsequences.These are,hesaid:
