Twenty-fiveyearsaftertheparishhadbeen foundedandtwenty-threeyearsofthepresent parishpriest'sendeavours,theparishofSt. AloysiusatShentonParkhaditsparish church.

HisGracetheArchbishop solemnlyblessedthenew memorialchurchonThursdaylastandpresidedatthe SolemnHighMasswhich followed, Theblessingoftheexteriorofthechurchbegan at7.30p.m.withthecongregationmassedoutsidethe church.AsHisGracemoved intothebuilding,theparishionersfilledupthepews tocapacity.HisGraceblessedthealtar,sanctuaryand thenwentroundtheinterior ofthechurchbuilding sprinklingitwithholy water. Granted HisHolinessPope XXIIIhasauthorised newindulgencestobe gainedbythosewhooffertheirsufferingsto God. Theauthorisationwas reportedinthecurrent issueoftheofficalVaticanpublication,Actsof theHolySee.

Thepublicationstated thataplenaryindulgence maybegainedunderthe usualconditionsbythose whointhemorninghave offeredtheirsufferings ofbodyorsoultoGod withwhateverprayer theymaychoose. A partialindulgenceof 500daysmaybegained bythosewhoonoccasion,withacontrite heart,devoutedlyoffer totheLordtheirsufferingsbymeansofapious ejaculation.

FatherAlphonsussaid thatthechurchwasfittingly namedafterSt.Aloysius, patronofyouth.Hecommentedthatyouthcertainly neededaleaderlikehim today.Aleaderwasneeded, hesaid,whowouldshow, asSt.Aloysiusdid,selfdenial,fidelitytoChrist andnocompromisewith principle.

Thepreacheralsocommentedthatthechurchwas fittingasamemorialto fallensoldiers."Theywould asknothingmore,"hesaid, "thantoberememberedon thisaltarofsacrifice."

Attheconclusionofthe Mass,HisGracetheArchbishopcongratulatedthe parishpriest,Monsignor Collins,andtheparishioners ofShentonPark.HisGrace commendedthemfortheir patience.Hesaidthatifthey hadmovedsomeyearsago andbuiltachurch,they mightnothavebuiltone likethispresentpleasing one.

NoblePurpose

HisGracesaidthatMonsignorCollins,eversincehe hadcometoShentonPark 23yearsago,hadbeenplanningthischurchinhismind. Hesaidthathehadtakenan extraordinaryinterestin everydetailofthedesign andconstructionofthe church,andthathehadnow presentedeveryonewiththis handsomeerectionincontemporaryarchitecture.

TheArchbishopsaidthat allwouldagreethatthe churchisagraceful,dignifiedanddevotionalbuilding andthatithadbeenfurnishedandequippedina tastefulandliturgicalmanner.

HisGracesaid:"Itis worthyofthenoblepurpose forwhichithasbeenbuilt, worthyoftheoldFaithin thisyounglandandworthy ofthespiritofsacrificeof theparishionersofShenton Park."

Hewentontosaythatthe utmostcreditwasduetoall whohadanypartinthe erectionofthishouseof prayer,where"theEternal Mysterieswillberelived dayafterdayandyearafter yearinanatmosphereof solemnpiety."

InsteadoftheusualsocialjusticestatementwhichtheBishopsofAustraliaissue eachyear,atimelyPastoralLetterhasbeen publishedandsignedbytheBishops.

NormallyaPastoralLetterisissuedby eachindividualBishoptoallthefaithful withinhisdiocesefortheirspiritualgood. Followingapracticeinothercountriesthe BishopshavedecidedonacommonPastoral becauseitssubjectisforthegoodofallin Australia.

Entitled"WhattheVaticanCouncilmeans toyou,"thePastoralgivesalucidexplanation oftheworkofaCouncil,andthepreparation whichgoesintoone.ThePastoralextolsthe workandabilityoftheHolyFatherinthe tremendouspreparationthathosbeenmade forthisCouncilandconcludesthat"asa resultofallthisprodigiouslabour,forthe firsttimeintheChurch'shistory,theBishops oftheworldwillgotoanEcumenicalCouncil withthegreatadvantageofhavingfirst studiedthevastbodyofproposalsthatwill besubmittedtotheirjudgment."Certainly, noCouncilinthepastenjoyedanythinglike thegreatdetailedpreparationthathasprecededthisone.

TheBishopscallonalltopraymostferventlyforthesuccessofthismomentous undertaking.Inthisway,theypointout, allcanplayanimportantpartintheCouncil.

ThePastoraldescribestheroleof,bothon ecumenicalcouncilandtheofficeofBishop assuccessortotheApostlesintheworkof theChurch.Itstatesclearlytheposition oftheSovereignPontiffwithhisbrother BishopsandanEcumenicalCouncil.Along withthis,aconcisesummaryoftheworkof theprecedingEcumenicalCouncilsofthe Church.

TheirLordshipsdeplorethatsomehave takentheideathattheprimaryandimmediatepurposeofthisCouncilisthere-union ofSeparatedChurcheswiththeSeeofPeter. ItispointedoutthataSecretariat,notaCommission,wasestablishedforthisaspectofthe manyconsiderationsoftheCouncil.

TheItalianbishopsask whetherthereliesatthe rootofallmodernfalse ideologiesandwrongful practicesinthereligious andmoralsphereasingle basicerrorfromwhichall theothersarise.Theyreply thattheredoes,thatitconsistsina"tendency,ormore exactlyamentality,which rejectssystematicallyand emphatically,anyinfluence ofreligioningeneraland theCatholichierarchyin particularonhumanlifeand institutions.Wearecon-

frontedwithapurelynaturalconceptionoflife,in whichthepronouncements ofreligionareeitherexpresslyrejectedorconfined tothesecretdomainofconscienceandthemystictwilightoftheChurch,without anysortofrighttointerfereinorinfluencepublic life,whetherinthephilosophical,legal,industrial, artistic,scientific,socialor politicalspheres."

Thedoctrinalerrorof naturalismandfalsehumanismmakesitsappearance intwodistinctforms:

(1)Materialisticatheism attackseverykindofbelief inGodasan"ideology" fromapastage,andtobe superseded.Thebruteforce oforganisedatheismis somethingrepulsivetoanyonewithanykindofreligion:

(2)Anotherformismodern "laicism,"whichacknowledgesGodandreligion,but rejectsthesupernatural orderarisingfromtheIncarnation,denyingthatitis alivinganddynamicforce inhistory."Inbuildingthe civitasterrena(earthly city)itwhollyignoresthe prescriptions(41theChristianrevelationanddisputes theChurch'sclaimtoa missiontoact,onspiritual grounds,inthetemporal order,bydirecting,informingandstimulatingitsactivities."

Onthisview,theChristianfaithisanexclusively privateconcern,and,as regardspubliclife,theonly relevantfactorsareman's naturalendowments,disconnectedutterlyfromany relationtoasupernatural orderoftruthandmorality. Thebelieveris,therefare, freetoconfesshisfaithin hisprivatelife,buthemay nottrytoshapethelifeof thecommunityaccordingto theteachingsoftheGospel,

TheChurchisadmittedto possessindependentand sovereignpowertoexercise itsspecificallyreligiousactivitiesforadirectlysupernaturalend(forexample,in mattersofworship,theadministrationofsacraments, andpreaching),buthasno rightwhatevertointervene inpubliclife,which,in virtueofitscompletejuridicalandmoralautonomy, canadmitnodependenceon, oreven,promptingby,"externalreligiousdoctrines." Theseopinionsareclearly contrarytoCatholicteaching."Inpracticetheydeny orignorethehistoricalfact ofrevelation,misconceive thenatureandmissionof theChurch,andtendto

ButtheStateisnot superiortothemorallaw, norisitthesourceofethical Principles.UnlesstheState ackowledgesGod,itmakes itselfagod,andsobecomes totalitarian,self-divinised, andimposingitsownphilosophyoflife,whichleaves nopossiblescopefortheunfetteredactivityofthe Church. Oppositiontotheinfluence oftheChristianChurch seemed,intheimmediate post-waryears,tohave largelydisappeared.The warhadshatteredallthe certaintiesoflife,totalitarianideologieshadletloose adelugeofbarbarism,and theChurchseemedIImany outsideobserverstheonly defenceofhumanfreedom anddignity,theguardianof allspiritualvalues.Butnow thatthestormhassubsided inmanycountriesandlife isonceagainnormal,men forgetthemenaceconstantly overhangingthem,andwant torestraintheChurchfrom "invading"thespheresof cultureandthelifeofthe community.
