TheSaturdayevening subscriptionconcertbegan withalargesectionofthe orchestraleavingtheplatform.

ForMozart's"Haffner" Symphony, thevisitingconductor,JaschaHorenstein, evenreducedthestrings, particularlythebassline. Thusheachievedabalance andsomethingliketheoriginalforcesforwhichMozartwrote.Theresultwasa clarityor, evenmore,a luciditywhichthethicker textureofalargerorchestra couldnotgive.Whilethe localorchestraresponded well, thefirstmovementwas notquitehappyandthe paceofthefinaleproveda littletoofastforsomeinstrumentalists.

TheAndante,however, wasperfectionwithstrings andwindsinbeautifully balancedconversation.

TheSchumannAminor concertofollowedwiththe youngIsraelipianist,Daniel Barenboim,givinganintenselypassionateperform. ance.Theorchestraseemed illatease,particularlynear thebeginningofthethird movement,butHorenstein pulledittogetherandthe restofthemovementwas excellent.

Aftertheinterval,wehad SamuelBarber's"FirstEssayforOrchestra,"apleasantpiecedistinguishedby cleverorchestration.

Thegloryoftheevening wasasuperbperformance ofBrahmsThirdSymphony; asinthe.Mozart,thewind instrumentsrespondedto Horensteininamostremarkableway,notablyin theAndante.Itappearsthat Horenstein'sgeniusliesparticularlyintherealmof profounder,reflectivemusic.

Tohavethreeworldfamousmusicianswithin fourdaysisalittleoverwhelminganditwasunfortunatethatLeonidRogan. thegreatSovietviolinist, hadtobesqueezedinona Mondayevening.

Hecertainlywasasgood ashisreputation,provingto beaviolinistofgreatpower andintensity,capableof poetry,too.

ThemajorworkwasBeethoven's"Kreutzer"sonata.

Asinmostclassicalviolin sonatas,thepianistishere asimportantastheviolinist andKogan'spartner,Naum Walter,wasfartooheavyhandedandthetwoplayers seemedalmosttobeplaying

asindividUalsattimes.The sameworkwasplayedby theMenuhinsafewmonths ago.Theygavetheimpressionthateverynotewas lovinglyengravedintheir hearts;pianoandviolin intermingled,eachreflecting,eachdeepeningthe other'sbeauty.WithKogan andWalter,theinstruments viedforattentionand,howeverbrillianttheplaying, thatwasmostdecidedlynot whatBeethovenintended.

Thesecondhalfofthe programmewasKogan's with14ShostakovichPreludes,arrangedforthe violin,Saint-Saens'"Havanaise"andRavel's"Tzigane."Alltheseprovedvery easytolistentoandgave ampledemonstrationof Kogpn'svirtuosity.Thesecondencoretotheenthusiasticaudiencewasagraceful bowto.Australia-Kogan playedArthurBenjamin's "JamaicanRumba."

TheTuesdayYouthConcertbroughtBarenhoim again,thistimegivinga mostpowerfulperformance ofthe"Emperor"Piano Concerto.

Thefactthathewasoverprojectedwasnothisfault, forheplayeddelicately enoughintheslowmovementinthosepassages wherethepianoaccompaniesthewoodwinds, but VaughanHanleyatall timescuttheorchestraback fartoomuchand, apart fromtheverysolidlineof firstviolinsandthebasson theoppositeside, theplayers seemedtohavesomethingof thesameuncertaintywhich afflictedthemintheSchumannconcertonSaturday.

AsonSaturday,too,the departureofthesoloist broughtanimmediaterecovery,againwithBrahms, thistimeaverygoodperformanceoftheVarions ontheSt.AnthonyChorale, aworkwhichweusedto knowasVariationsona ThemebyHayden. Asensuouslybeautiful performanceofDebussy's "L'Apres-midid'unFaune" followed,withexcellent playingbyflautistOwen Fisenden.TheconcertconcludedwithKodaly's "DancesofGalanta"which, despiteVaughanHanley's eulogies,didseemtobe somewhatrepetitious;a musicalidea,howeverbrilliantandrhythmic,losesits forceifitlacksvariety.
