Formerly,say,inthelastcentury,theywerethe clueofmenandwomenproducedbytheexpansion oftradeandindustryinBritain.FranceandGermany -chieflymanuallabourers,miners,factoryhands, farmlabourers,wharflabourers,sailors,andsuch. Sincethenthehostofclerks,teachers,shopassistants, domestics,andsimilaroperativeshasgrownup;and astheirlotwasseentobethesameasthe"workers," thatis,becausetheydependedfortheirlivelihoodon wages,thetermincludesthemalso.Nowadays, "worker"wouldcoveravastnumber,thewageearners.
WhyIsThePopeInterested?
AsHeadoftheChurchwhosechiefcareisthe spiritualwelfareofmankind,whyhavethePopesbeen concernedaboutwagesandprofitsandsuchmaterial andeconomicaffairs?"Businessisbusiness,"sowhy doestheChurchinterveneinit?Itisespeciallybecause ofjustice.Thesemattersinvolvequestionsofrightand wrong,goodandetil;theyhavetheirreligiousmorality, andthereforearewithintheprovinceofthereligious authority."Business"meansexchange;exchangesupposesequalityofvalues;equalitysupposeshonestyand justice;andjusticeisamoralandreligiousquality ofman'sactions.Theseqeustionsareasreligiousas theseventhCommandmentofGod.
SocialAndIndividualAspects
Aretheseaffairs,likewages,amatterofprivate agreementbetweenworkerandemployer?Yes,they areandpersonaljusticemustbeobservedbetween thetwo;andfortheworker,thejustvalueofhislabour ishisliving,forthatisallhehastoensurehisliving.
Buthislabourhasanothervalue,asthelabourofa socialperson.Nomanisasolitarybynature;he naturallyliveswithothers;heneedsotherpeople physicallyandpsychologically.Thatiswhyhebegins afamily-so"iety,joinsacluboraunionoracompany, livesinatownorcity,andisamemberofsome politicalstate.Now,asalivingunitinsuchsociety hehasdutiestohisfellow-members(theirrights),and theyhavedutiestowardshim(hisrights).Asa membereachisboundtohelpthepurposeandthe welfareofhissociety;andthesocietyhasthedutyto fosterthewell-beingofitsmembers,whowouldnot joinitotherwise.
Butthesemutualobligationswouldbeimpossibleif thememberscannothavethemeansforhelping,ifthey havenotajustincometoprovidethesemeans,ifthey havenotjustwages.Consequentlythelabourer'swage hasaclosebearingonthesocietyinwhichheis,as creatinganactive,usefulmember.TakeaStatewhere manyindividualsaredeniedtheirrights;thepublic bodyisthenbeinginjured;theinjusticebecomessocial aswellasprivate;if,forinstance,halftheworkers werenotgivenjustwages.thesocietymustliveata poorlevel,housingandhealthwillbeinferior,the Governmentwillnothaveenoughincometoservethe generalgood,andsocietyasawholewillbeaffected fortheworse.Thesamewouldapplytoalltheminor societiesofthenation.
TheChurch'sRightToSpeak

FatherhadofferedMassthatmorningtothank OurHeavenlyFatherforalltheblessingpoured outovertheyearsthroughtheAssociation.Many girls'liveshadbeenenrichedbythefriendships formedandbyinfluenceononeanother.Hehad prayedthattheheartsofthisyear'splayerswould growingenerositytowardsoneanothersothatthe strengthdevelopedinsportwouldbeusedforgood purposesandtheassociationwithoneanother wouldbeblessedwithaspiritofcharityandhelpfulness.DuringMassonSundaytheyshouldrememberthegirlsintheteamwhomGodhasput oneclosetoandforwhomJesusChristdied.
Duringtheyearmanywoulddowonderfulthings forothergirls-ascoaches,captainsandumpires. OurLordreachesoutthroughtheAssociationaskinggirlstodothings.Heasksforsmallsacrifices thatHecanofferwithHisownsacrificeforthe gloryoftheFather.
FatherO'Briensaidhehopedsomeofthegirls wouldthinkofstartingLeaders'Groupsintheir parishes.ThroughtheY.C.W.beingsolidlyestablished,thebasketballassociationwouldgrow,but iftheLeaders'Groupswerenotstrongthenthe Associationwouldbedestroyedfrominsidebecause thespiritofgenerositywouldbemissing.

MonsignorMcMahonhas beeninterestedineducation since1922whenhebecame thefirstinspectorof schoolsinthe1archdiocese. Foryearshevisitedevery schoolinthearchdiocese bothcityandcountry.Each yearaConferenceofTeacherswasheldinPerthbefore theschoolsre-openedin FebruaryandfromthediscussionsthePerthscheme ofReligiousEducationwas formulatedandadopted.
In1926thefirstReligious
HolidaySchoolwasconductedbyhimatthe BrightonHotel,Cottesloe, when114boyscamefrom greatdistances.TheReligion byPostCorespondenc,s Classesfollowedtheresidentialschoolsheldincountry convents,andthewhole schemewassoonadopted throughoutAustralia.

In1925MonsignorMcMahonfoundedtheNewman Societyinalectureroomin theoldUniversityonIrwin St,Thefirstcelebrationsof UniversitySundaywaspioneeredbytheNewmanSocietyin1925.Mgr.McMahon wasappointedtotheUniversitySenatein1934and servedonituntil1960.He successfullyappliedforthe siteonwhichSt.Thomas MoreCollegenowstands. "Lettherebebread," declaredthestockyexorchardistfromSouth Australiaandarevolutionaryconceptwasborn. Nolongerwouldthemajorityofthehumanrace gohungryorillnourished:nolongerwouldonethirdoftheworld'spapulationstandbyand watchtheothertwothirds progressively starvetodeath.
Duringthenextfew monthstherewillhardlybe apersoninAustraliawho willnothaveheardsomethingabouttheFreedom fromHungerCampaign, whichhasbeendescribed asthemost counter-attackeverorganised againstthetwinevilsofhungerandmalnutrition,which blightthelivesoftwothirdsoftheworld'spopullation.

TheCampaignisofspecialinteresttoAustralians becauseitisaby-product oftheeffortsandzealofan Australian-by-adoption,the lateFrankLidgettMcDougall,who,throughouthis longlifetime,workedtirelesslyforinternationalcooperationasthemeansof solvingthecenturies-old paradoxofplentyoffood forthefewandinsufficient forthemany.
InSeptember,1942,McDougallwasinvitedtothe WhiteHousebyEleanor Roosevelttodiscussadocumentwhichhehadwritten onthesubjectoffoodproductionandshortages,entitled"Agriculturaland HealthProblems."
AthismeetingwithPresidentRoosevelt,McDougall outlinedhisideaofaninternationalagencydevotedto worldproblemsoffoodproductionanddistribution. Thisleddirectlytodiscussionswhichresultedinthe historicconferenceatHot Spring,Virginia,inMay, 1943, whichformulated plansforinternationalactioninthefieldoffoodand agricultureafterthewar. McDougallattendedthe HotSpringsConferenceas amemberoftheAustralian delegation.Fromthenonhe workedenergeticallyforthe establishmentofaspecialisedagencytooperatewithintheframeworkofthe emergingUnitedNationsOrganisation.
In1945thatspecial
agency,calledthefoodand AgricultureOrganisation, carpeintobeing,withan eminentBritishnutritionist, Sir(nowLord)BoydOrr, asitsDirector-Generaland withMcDougallashischief assistant.
OneofItIcDougall'sfirst jobswastofindasuitable mottofortheneworganisation.Afterdippingintohis memory,whichwasofencyclopedicproportjons,he cameupwith"FiatPanis" Latinfor"Lettherebe bread."
InFebruary,1958,Frank LidgettMcDougallmadehis lastvisittohisofficeinthe Romeheadquartersofthe FoodandAgricultureOrganisation.Inhis74thyear hehadcometotheendof hisjourney,thevictimof aseverestroke.
TheBattle-Plan TocommemorateMcDougall'spartinitscreation, FAOin1959institutedthe McDougallMemorialLecture,whichisdelivered everytwoyearsinRomeby aneminentworldfigure. Alsocommemoratinghis workforFAOishisportrait inthe"AustraliaRoom"at FAOheadquarters.Itisin thisroomthatthepolicymakingboardofFAOholds itsregularmeetings.The conferencetableandother furnitureintheroomwere madefromAustraliantimberandpresentedtothe organisationbytheCommonwealthGovernment.
ButthemostlastingmemorialtothisvigorouspioneeristheFreedomfrom HungerCampaign,which wasdevisedinthosesame RomebuildingsbythepresentheadofFAO,Dr.B.R. SenofIndia. TheCampaignwasinspiredbytheidealwhich McDougallcarriedwithhim thegreaterpartofhislife: Thosewhohavemusthelp thosewhohavenot.
TowhichDr.Senhasaddedarevolutionarythought ofhisown:Thosewhohave notmustalsolearntohelp themselves.
That,inessence,isthe battle-planofthefreedom fromHungerCampaign.By acombinationofoutside aidandinternaleffort,the underfedpeoplesofthe worldwillbetaughthowto growthefoodwhichthey needtosustaintheirrapidly increasingnumbers.
Prosperouscountriessuch asAustraliacanhelpin manywaystobringthis idealtoreality.Thatitcan bedonethereisnolonger anydoubt.
Australiahasaspecial reasonforensuringthesuccessoftheCampaign.It owesittothemanwhofirst proclaimedthecrythathas givennewhopetothe world'shungry,"Letthere bebread!"
ChurchmeantnotonlyattendanceatMass,but afriendlysocialgatheringforachatandexchange ofnewsafterMass,andthemembersofthecongregationwereproudtobedressedintheir "SundayBest"tddohonourtoGod.
Thesedaysthereisarushfromcars-orbuses intochurchandahurriedrushhomewardafter church.Andwhathashappenedtothe"Sunday Best"clothes?
OnoccasionsinthepastyearIhavebeenshocked bytheunbelievableinformalityandunsuitability ofsomeoftheclothesworntochurch.Someyoung menandgirlshaveevenwornshortsintothe Cathedral.Thereisabsolutelynoexcuseforthis.
Ifyouarecomingfromthebeachorgoingtothe beachafterchurch,thegirlscaneasilywearaskirt overtheirshortsandtheboyscanwearlong trousersandchangeintotheirshortsatthebeach.
Ifyouhavebeenguiltyofcarelessdressingfor churchinthepast,trytohavemorerespectfor God's"house"inthefutureandgiveasmuch thoughttoyourattireforthegreatoccasionof Massasyouwouldtoanyothergreatoccasion.

Victoriawasthedaughter ofStanislausMugwanya,a devotedCatholicwhoplayed aprominentpartinthemodernhistoryofUgandaas ChiefJudgeandforatime asRegenttotheyoungKabakeDaudiChwa. WhentheUgandaMartyrswerekilled,Victoria hadbeenboundtoabundle offirewood,butwasreleasedbeforeitwassetonfire.
ShewenttoFortPortal in1908withtheWhiteSisterswhentheyestablished theirfirststationthere.She leavestwodaughtersand morethantwentygrandand great-grandchildren.
