HisGracesaidthatitwas athisrequestthattheBrigidineSisterscamefromNew SouthWalestotheArchdiocese20yearsago.Inthat timehesaidthatTheyhad provedthemselvesasnoted educatorsandthattheir pupilshadgainedmanyoutstandingresultsinuniversityexaminations.

HisGracesaidthatthe newcollegesuppliedagreat needforaregionalschool intheSubiaco-WembleyFloreatParkandCityBeach area,andthatitwasappropriatethattheMother GeneraloftheBrigidine Congregationwaspresentto witnesstheexpansionofthe orderintheWest.

Anappealwasmadeby HisGracetotheparentsof thestudentsofthenewcollegethattheyco-operate withtheteachersandthe teachingideals. HisGraceconcludedby congratulatingthearchitectsandthebuildersandcommendedthesupervisorsand theworkmenforthework

RENEWEDLIFE

Thatiswhywearegladandrejoice-Hissatisfaction andmeritoffertheworldarenewaloflife,andalso theaidstoliveitworthily.Themancondemnedto deathwhoisreprievedhasreasontobejoyful;still heknowsheisnotfreefromsicknessanddeath.We arereprievedfromourfallenstatebythePassionof ourRedeemer,andmoreoverwearegiventhemeans ofavoidingareturntothatstate.Bybaptismwe literallyrevivethefriendshipandgraceofGod,and areintroducedtothewaysandmeansofpersevering inthem,namely,thebelief\ofHisteaching,anequipmentofvirtues,membershipofhisChurch,actual grace,andtheuseofthesacraments.

ACTIVELIFE

ThefifthseriesofmeetingsbeganonMarch25and wasscheduledtoendonApril3.Unlikemeetingsat previoussessions,thesehavebroughttogethermembers andconsultorsforfourormorehoursadaytocopewith thegreatamountofmaterialtobedealtwithbeforethe openingoftheSecondVaticanCouncilonOctober11. Meetingsatearliersessionshadlastedapproximately threehourseach.

Earlymeetingsofthissessiondealtmainlywith liturgicalproblems.TheywerepresentedbyCardinal Larraona,C.M.F.,headofthecouncil'sPreparatory CommissionforSacredLiturgy,andinclifdedthenature oftheliturgy,thedevelopmentoftheliturgicalmovement,andliturgicalbooksthemselves.

Althoughlittlecanbestatedat.thistimeconcerning specificmattersconsideredbythecommission,itis generallyunderstoodinVaticancirclesthatamongthe suggestionsdebatedwasaproposalthattheMassbe changedinitsnon-essentialcharacteristicssothat Catholicsofalllevelscouldbetterparticipateinitand understanditsfullsignificance.

AmongthechangessaidtohavebeenunderconsideratioaIsthattheMassendatthe'ItsMissaEst" insteadofwiththereadingoftheLastGospel,asat present.Otherpossibilitiesincludethereorganisation oftheLessons,EpistlesandGospelstogivethemgreater significanceinmoderncircumstances.Noofficialinformationonthesepossibilities,however,wasimmediatelyavailable.

'Inconnectionwiththesereports,Vaticancirclescite thatthepressserviceofthepreparatorycommission, commentingonpossiblemattersunderdiscussionduring thesessionsdevotedtotheliturgycalledattentionto thegoal,thatthelargestpossiblenumberofCatholics beabletoassistatMassmorefullyanddevoutly. Thecommissionpressservicesaidofthisgoalthat "itisindispensablethataninstructionsuitabletothe capacityofintelliggnceandPetyofindividualChristians"beissuedandthatalsousefulis"atension which,whileleavingintacttheactualOrdinaryofthe Mass,placesinbetterlightthenatureandsignificance ofthewords,gesturesandrites."

Christiantruthswhentheyarerejectedanddenied haveawayofcomingbacklikeghoststohauntus. Takeforexamplethenotionofhell.Mierhaving denieditontheoutside,bellmovedtotheinside,as modernmanbattleswiththespectresandghostsand devil,inhissubconsciousman.

Anotneriteminthecreedwhichwebelievedwehad intellectuallysurpassedwastheendoftheworldand thelastjudgment.Todaynotalkismorecommonthan theendoftheworldandthejudgmentofanuclear war.Thescripturalideaofaviolent,catastrophicand suddenendoftheworldliketheHashoflightningfrom theeasttothewest,wasscrapped;itwasthoughttobe unbecomingtotheevolutionaryconceptofunlimited progress.Inthishour,thelanguageofthathorlibie endisbackagainasmanshrinks'infear,notfromthe judgmentofGod,butfromthejudgmentofman.We nowsitasstartledbeingswaitingforthedreadhour when,asitwere,someonewouldthroWabrickinto thecity'sdynamoandallthelightswouldgoout;or else,whensomehumandemonwouldpoisonthereservoirsoftheworldandwewouldperishinthi"st.

StateOfConscienceIn"LastHours"

Thatmagnificentwriter,C.S.Lewis,Professorof PhilosophyatOXfordUniversity,hasgiventothe catastrophicendingoftheearththetitlewhichhetook fromJohnDonne:"TheWorld'sLastNight."He stressesnotsomuchthebombshelterwhichwillprotectfromtheburningofafissionedatom,but.rather thatclarityofconsciencewhichaloneis.thesafeguard inthatapocalypticnight.Asheputsit:"Theschoolboy doesnotknowwhichpartof-hisVirgil'lessonhewill bemadetotranslate-thatiswhyhemustbeprepared totranslateANYpassage.Thesentry.-doesnotknow atwhattimeanenemywillattack,oranofficerinspect hispost-thatiswhyhemustkeepawakeallthetune."

Thepointofitallisnottoincreasefear,an.idrive teenlikeground-hogsintohysteriaawayfromthelight. Perhapsthelessonofthefrightoftheworld'slast nightisthatwhatweshouldbedoingisthis-going throughourwastepaperbasketstopickoutthegreat discardedspiritualandmoraltruthsthatwehavebeen castingintoitforthelastfewcenturies.

Thepressservicealsonotedthat"Theliturgical movementofthisourage,withitsstudiesconcerning theoriginsandevolutionofvariouspartsoftheMass, hascertainlyfavouredamorepreciseawarenessof thoseadditionswhichoverthecenturieshaveobfuscatedtheclarityandencumberedthesimplicityofthe originalrite"

Atlatermeetings,thecommissiondiscussedmissionaryproblems.GregorioPietroXVCardinalAgasimian,PrefectoftheSacredCongregationforthe PropagationoftheFaithandPresidentofthePreparatoryCommissionfortheMissions,outlinedanumberof proposalsinthisfield.

TheweekofApril8maybringthefirstsignificant testoftheNewOrleansarchdiocese'sdecisionto desegregateCatholicschoolsnextautumn.

Duringthatweek,undertermsofthearchdiocese's announcementdisclosingitsdesegregationplans,childrennowenrolledinCatholicschoolsareto"indicate theirintenttocontinue"insuchschoolsnextyear.

OneStatelegislatorhaspredicteda"massboycott" ofCatholicschoolsinthewakeofthedesegregation decision.ThedecisionwasannouncedbyFatherElmo L.Romagosa,directorofthearchdiocesaninformation bureau.TheannouncementsaidArchbishopJosephF. RummelofNewOrleanshaddisclosedhisintentionto desegregatetheschoolsatameetingwithpriestsof thearchdioceseonMarch27.

Theannouncementdidnotreferspecificallyto desegregation.ItsaidsimplythattheArchbishophad decidedthat"effectiveatthetimeofregistrationfor the1962-63schoolsession,ALLCatholicchildrenmay applyforadmissiontotheCatholicschoolsofthearchdiocese,bothelementaryandsecondary,parochialand private,accordingtotheacceptededucationalstandards." Thereare10,851Negrostudentsin32Catholicschools intheNewOrleansarchdiocese.TotalCatholicschool enrolmentis61,025in116elementaryschoolsand 14.682in3?highschools.

Protestsagainstthearchdiocese'sdecisionwerenot longincoming.Evenbeforethedecisionwasmade public,ahandfulofpicketsparadedinfrontofArchbishopRummel'sresidence.TheycarriedsignsclaimingthattheBibleteachessegregation.

Threepersonshavesincebeenexcommunicated.

CouragePraisedByMinister INNEWYORK,aProtestantminister,praisingthe "forthrightcourage"ofArchbishopRummelforending segregationinparochialschoolsinNewOrleans,called onhiscongregationtoprayforthesouthernarchdiocese.

InastatementreadfromthepulpitoftheBroadway CongregationalChurch,theRev.LawrenceL.Durgin describedtheArchbishop'sactasoneof"foresight" aswellascourage.

"Iamsurethatyouwouldwantmetojoininthe generalapplauseandexpressionofappreciationfor thisdecision,"theministersaid."Whatevertheconsiderationsmayhavebeenormaycontinuetobe,we areboundtobegratefulforthisactofforthright courage. Oursocialforthemonth ofMayistotakeplaceon Sundayafternoon,May13, andwillbeintheformof aspoontournament,with trophiesbeingdonatedby members.Acordialinvitationisextendedtoallmembersandfriends,andwe hopetohaveagoodrepresentation.

FatherAldanwarnedthe assemblythattheymustnot fallpreytothenon-Christianenvironmentinwhich theylived.

Theyhadtobeleaders, having,aseachChristian does,thelivingGodasa Tabernaclewithinhissoul. Inalltheirdealingswith Peopletheyhadtorememberthisbasicfact-that Christlivedwithinthem.

Sometimestheyhadfelt likeclassingthecaseasa hopelesstask,buttheyhad persisted;andthroughthe graceofGod,thesesouls hadbeenwonbackto Christ.

Juniormembershadto workwiththesamespirit offaith.Theyhadtorememberthattimespentin theworkofGodwastime wellspent;andtheirobligations,asmembersofMary's Legion,hadpriorityofclaim ontheirtime.

BrotherFogartyinhis talk"ChristianAttitudeto HolyWeek,"furtheremphasisedthattheirvocationas Christiansdemandeda Christianresponsetothe loveofGodforman.

AttendanceattheHoly Weekceremonies,Sacramentalparticipationon thesemostholyofdays,was essentialiftheywereto bringtheLightofChristto theworld.

Thedayconcludedwith BenedictionoftheMost HolySacrament,withall theLegionariesjoiningin theconcludingprayers, prayingfora"faiththatis immovable,thatissteadfastamidallthetrialsand disappointmentsoflife.

Soendedtheday;though inonesenseitwasonlythe beginning.FortheLegionarieswerenowtotakewith themthenewideastheyhad learntandtoputtheminto practiceintheireveryday lifeasstudents.

ThedayfortheSenior Legionarieswas,indeed,a comfortingone-comforting toseesomanyenthusiastic youngheartsreadytogive theirwhole-heartedattentiontotheworkassignedfor them.

Theprogrammewas tightlypacked,butquestionedlater,themembers wereagreedthattheday hadbeenadeeplysatisfying one.Withsuchagenerous bodyofyouth,theworkof Mary'sLegionisnotlikely tofail,buttogrowtoeven greaterheightsintheserviceofChristandHis MysticalBody.

Itisnoteasytospeak dispassionatelyofyourbelovedBishop,forwiththe RequiemMassandmyself hehadclosebondsoffriendship,afriendshipthathas spannednearlyhalfacentury.

ButItrytodosowhenI comparehislifeonearthto thejustmanpraisedbythe Psalmist.Hewasamanwho keptGod'slawbeforehim dayandnightandhewas constantlyfruitfulindoing goodasthetreegrowingby aflowingriver.

AlfredJosephGummer wasborninPerthville,New SouthWales,justbeforethe closeofthelastcentury.He enteredtheSeminaryat Springwoodin1916tocommencehisstudiesforthe priesthood,thencetoSt. Patrick's,Manly,andin 1918hewassentbythe BishopofBathursttothe UrbanCollegeofPropagandaFide,Rome,tocontinueandcompletehis studies.Itwastherewe threemetanditwasthere wereceivedpriestlyordination.

FatherGummerreturned toAustraliain1923andwas appointedbyhisBishopas DiocesanSecretaryand supervisorofreligioninthe schools.Laterheservedin parishesasanassistant priesttillhewasappointed tothechargeoftheOberon parish,wherewiththecooperationofhisparishioners hebuiltaworthychurch. Thusasassistantpriestand parishpriesthespentthe first18yearsofhispriestly life.

Itwasalifeofzealous apostolicworkremotefrom thelargecities.Buthis priestlyqualitiesandhis outstandingpastoralwork Cudnotpassunnoticed,and hismanyfriendswere elatedandnotsurprised whenPopePiusXIIappointedAlfredJosephGummerasBishopofGeraldton. He was consecrated BishoponthefeastofSt. Joseph,1942,intheCathedralofSts.Michaeland JohnatBathurstbyHis EminenceCardinalGilroy, assistedbyBishopNortonof BathurstandBishopO'Col-

linsofBallarat.Itwasthe yearofthe100thanniversaryoftheformationofthe HierarchyinAustralia.

ThisDioceseofGeraldton withanareaofover 600,000squaremilesis,in extent,oneofthelargestin theworld.Butexceptfor thisCathedralCityanda numberoftowns,itis sparselysettledandthere arewideopenspaceswith longdistancesbetweenstationsandsettlements.Yet, throughouttheDiocesethere existsthespiritofahappy familywithacloselyknit bondofunionbetween Bishop,priests,Religious andpeople.

Itwassowhenin1942 BishopGummertookthe placeofhisdistinguished predecessor.Itissonowafter 20yearsoffruitfullabour duringwhichtheCatholic populationincreasedfrom 6.500to10,000,thenumber ofCatholicschoolchildren nearlydoubled,andthe manyworksundertaken prosperedandflourished. Thereisnodoubttheclose bondofuniondepends firstlyontheBishopand thenontheloyalsupport andco-operationofpriests, Religiousandpeople.

YourbelovedBishopwas anaffectionatefatheranda trueshepherdoftheflock ofChristcommittedtohis care.Todayyousorrow deeplyforthedeathofyour fatherinGod;andwe, headedbytheApostolic Delegate,Archbishopde Furstenberg,andtheArchbishopofPerth,Dr.Prendiville,withBishopsO'Collins,McCabe,Lyons,Stewart,Goody,Gallagher,Brennan,Fox,JobstandAbbot Gomezandthevisiting priestsandpeople,have cometojoinourgriefwith yours;toofferMasswith youforhissoul;andtogive hismortalremainsalast farewell.

BishopGummerwasa manofwisdomandlearning.Hewaseloquent,firm, tenacious.Hewasacareful andprudentadministrator. Herehehadcomeandhere hewouldremaintilldeath wouldparthimfromhis belovedDiocese.Butabove allhewasamanofGod;a justmanwhokeptGod's lawbeforehimdayand night.Suchamancouldnot failtobeafathertohis people. Constantlyhewaspreoccupiedwiththewelfare andneedsofhispriestsand Religious.TheseinGeraldtonandinthedistant parishesandoutpostsofa vastDiocesewereandare doingheroicworkinthe

causeofGod.Hetravelled constantly,encouragingand inspiringthemwithword andexample.Theyknew theywerealwayswelcome attheBishop'sHouse.

Werememberhowhe agreedtothesuggestionof usingaeroplanestoenable prieststoministermore quicklytothepeopleinthe outback.Thesewereeffectiveintheirpurpose,but newasgladandrelieved when,inthecourseoftime, theirusecouldbedispensed withforheworriedgreatly lestanyofhispriestsmight bekilledorinjured.

BishopGummerwasalwaysatthedisposalofhis people.Hetaughtyouthe truthsofGodandexhorted youfromthispulpitand prayedandlabouredfor youreternalsalvation.His voicewasheardwherever therewereCatholicsand throughouttheDiocesehe offeredtheHolySacrifice anddispensedtheSacraments.Hehadthewarm loveofhispeople;andour brethrenwhodonotshare ourfaithfoundhimfriendly andaffableandamanofhis wordwhonevercompromisedhisfaith.They esteemedhimhighlyasa Bishopandafellowcitizen.

Intheserecentyearshis healthwasnotofthebest. Hewasunabletomakehis "adlimina"visittoRome in1960becauseofill-health, andlastJanuaryhewasnot abletoattendtheBishops' meetinginSydneybecause hewasinhosiptal.Buthis healthseemedtoimprove, andlastFebruary,heeding thecallofhisfriends,he cameforabriefvisittothe EasternStates.Welittle thoughtthenthatitwasindeedafinalvisit,asifperhapshehadapremonition thathewouldnotbemuch longerinthisworld.

HereturnedtoGeraldton justtwomonthsagoand thoughstillundermedical careheresumedhispastoral work.Inoticedinthelast

issueof"TheCathedral Chronicle"theaccountof hiswarmandappreciative welcometoagroupofnewly arrivedlaymissionaries whohadcomefromvarious partsofAustraliatowork foraperiodoftimeinthe DioceseofGeraldton Futuregenerationsmay affirmthattheestablishmentofthelaymissionaries herewasthemostsignificant eventintheepiscopateof BishopGummer.

ThegoodBishoplaboured totheend.Godgrantedhim apeacefuldeath.Heretired asusualontheeveningof Wednesday,April4,andin theearlyhoursoflast ThursdaymorningGod calledthesoulofHisfaithfulservant.Forusthereis griefandsorrow;forhim, pleaseGod,thereisjoyand everlastinghappiness. Fewsymphoniesintherepertoryhavecausedmore derisionandyetitremains aprimefavouritewithone andall.Eventhemostacademicofcriticis,afterdetailingitsmanytechnical faults,willleanbackand revelinthetunefulness,the lyricalpoetry,thedaring shiftsofkeyandallthe adorablelittlebitsand pieceswhichareallsummed upintheadjective"Schubertian."

PerhapsKlempererisa littletooaugustforthe genialityofthiswork,but onthewholeIaminclined tocommendthisperformanceagainstitscompetitors, althoughtheBostonS.O. underMuench(R.C.A.)isa goodalternative, IBRAHMS:SymphonyNo.2. PittsburgS.O./Steinburg. CommandClassic,55/-.

ItisnotoftenthatItalk aboutrecordingqualitybeforeperformance,butthis 35mm.filmrecordingisso outstandingastomeritparticularcomment.Agood recordingisn'ttobejudged byanyoddstandardsbut simplybycomparisonwith anorchestraplayingina goodconcerthall.Tonal

fidelity,goodorchestral balanceandorchestraltutuswithoutdistortionaren't spectacular;infact,our brainsseemtohavethe abilityofsupplyingwhat the,recordinglacks-thatis whysomeoftheancient acousticalrecordingsare stilltolerable.However, whenasuperlativerecordinglikethisiscompared withagoodrecordingof thesamework,thedifferencesareremarkable.There seemslittledoubtthatthis newmeansofrecordingis aleapforward. Theperformance,too,is good.Icomparedthisdisc withtheColumbiaonerecentlyissued(Philharmonia, Klemperer).Tomymind, thechoiceisbetweena superbrecordingwitha verygoodperformanceon theonehand(Command) andasuperbperformance withagoodrecordingonthe other.Steinburghasalotof driveandaToscanini-like pace;Klempererisslower, morepoetic,hasagreater menealgraspandarather betterorchestra.Soyou paysyourmoneyandyou takesyourchoice-either discwillbeageminyour collection.

Mozarteansareapttobe morethanalittleimpatient withmostoftherecordings ofhissymphoniesandpiano concertos.Slovenlytempi andphrasingscanreduce hismostheavenlyworksto mererococco.Oneofthe mostmaddeningrecordsin mycollectionisaboutthe onlyversionondiscofthe firstofhis1784-6seriesof pianoconcertos(K449).It isanastoundingwork, hardlyeverperformedin publicandIhaveheard onlyoneotherperformance. WhenIthinkofhowit COULDsound,atthehands ofareallygoodpianist.I canhardlybeartohear whatis,afterall,acompetentpianisthittingallthe rightnotes.

Thisisapreludetosaying thatthe,ColumbiaS.O. underBrunoWalterseems socompletelyrightinevery barofthe"Jupiter''that theperformanceisajoy fromthebeginningtoend. Thismostolympianofsymphoniesisquitesuitableto thelargemodernorchestra providedthereisnothicknessoftextureorlossof precisionasissooftenthe case.Withsonorityaddedto brilliance,thisversionis rightoutinthefrontrow. Thesameremarksdonot quiteapplytothe"Haffner," asmallerscalework,but here,too,isprobablythe bestversionondisc.

Thestoryisasleisurely asthebullockwagontrip thatconveysthetwoimmigrantstotheirdestination. Therearegooddescriptions oflifeatthestationhomesteadandthefashionsof theday.Wildblacks,the captureofabushranger,the temporarydisappearanceof alittleboyandsimilarincidentsarestrungtogether loosely.Thestorylackscohesionandleavesonewith thevaguefeelingthateither MargaretKiddiewasnot quiteathomeinhandling fictionorthatitisan abridgedversionoftheoriginalandhassufferedconsiderablyin'thepruning.It trailsawayindefinitelyat theconclusionandyoung readersbroughtupon filetofhigh-pressureadventurestoriesandsciencefictionwillprobablyfind-it tamestuff

Thisyear'sBudgetinthe RepublicofIrelandhasbeen describedasoneforthe CommonMarket.Ireland's applicationforfullmembershipoftheCommonMarket isunderconsiderationby the"Six,"andtheBudget introducedbyDr.James Ryan,MinisterforFinance, hasmadeconcessionstoindustrytoenableittoprepart-fortheMarket.Ithas alsogivenfarmersLai millionviathelocalauthoritiestorelievetherates theypaytotheselocalauitforities.Thefarmersnow havesubsidiestoatotalof £40million,or25percent Ofthetaxrevenueofthe state.

TheBudgetwillgiveOld AgePensionersandwidows anadditional216aweek fromAugustnext,willincreaseothertypesofpensions,buttherateofIncome Taxwillremainthesame. Dr.Ryansaidnationalproductionhadbeenrising, andunemploymentandemigrationdecreasing.
