FEDERATION'S CONSISTENTEFFORTS

RECEIVEPRAISE FROMARCHBISHOP

"THEWORKoftheParentsandFriends' Federationhasbroughtnewhopeforthe futureofourschoolsinWesternAustralia," saidHisGracetheArchbishopattheEighth AnnualGeneralMeetingoftheParentsand Friends'FederationofW.A.

HisGracegavespecial thankstotheMostRev.L. J.Goody,BishopofBunbury,forthesupportgiven totheFederationinhisdioceseandfortheadmirable pastoralletteroneducation whichHisLordshiphad giveninAdvent.

HisGracesaidthatthis pastoralletterhadbeena factorinbringingabouta recenttelevisiondebateon thepositionofallindependentschools.Inthisdebate, HisGracesaid;Mr.W.A. Mahoney,presidentofthe ParentsandFriends'Federation,hadearnedrespect andgainedgreatsympathy, understandingandsupport forourjustclaimsineducation.

Provocation

HisGracesaid:"Hehad acquittedhimselfexceptionallyandhadgainedrespect andadmirationasaCatholic laymanbyhispatienceand forbearanceundergreat provocation."

ItwaspointedoutbyHis Gracethatfromthisdebate itcouldberealisedthat Catholicswereatlastno longeraloneintheirfightfor justiceineducationandthat forthefirsttimein67years otherswerejoininginthe battle."Theywantedour support,"hesaid,"andthis wouldbegladlyandwholeheartedlygiven."

HisGracesaid:"TheexpressionofthePublic SchoolsHeadmasters'Conferenceontheneedforassistancetoschoolswasparticularlygratifying.With suchpowerfulallies,somethingmightbebrought aboutinWesternAustralia

morequicklythanmany realised."

MostAffiliated

HisGraceexpressedhis personalgratitudeforthe largenumbersofschools andparisheswhichhad formedParentsandFriends' Associationsandaffiliated themwiththeFederation.It wasparticularlygratifying thatpracticallyallsecondaryschoolswerenowaffiliated.Buttherewerestill manyschoolsandparishes whohadstilltojoininthe greatworkoftheFederation.Thereweresomeassociationswhich,thoughmembers,didnotpaytheirsubscriptions.Allschoolswere benefitingintheworkof theFederationandall shouldseethattheFederationhadthefundstocarry onafightfromwhichall wouldcontinuetobenefit.

HisGraceemphasised againthatitwashiswish thatallCatholicschoolsin theArchdioceseshouldhave affiliatedassociations.

HisGracecongratulated theofficersoftheFederationCouncilontheirwork, especiallyMgr.Bourke, theirspiritualdirector.He regrettedthattheyhadlost theservicesofMr.Carol LarkinandofMr.BillEnglish,whohadsuchexpert knowledgeinthefieldof education.

HewishedtheFederation everyblessingandsuccess inthehardandimportant yearwhichlayaheadof themandespeciallycharged themtohaverecourseto prayerforguidanceintheir work.

NotthetypeofPressGangwhichindaysofyore waswonttopersuade-albeitsomewhatforciblythereluctantyouthofEnglandtoserveinthe King'sNavee,butaPressGangwithadifference.

InJuneof1961theJuniorLegionofMaryat St.Joseph'sMaristBrothers'College,Subiaco, indicatedadesiretohelptheCatholicPress.The boysdecidedthattheywouldpromotethesaleof "Records"intheirparish.Thisideacamefromthe boysthemselvesandtheyputtheirplantooneof theMaristBrotherswhohaschargeoftheLegion. HeconferredwiththeSt.VincentdePaulSociety manwhohaschargeof"TheRecord"atSubiaco andthematterwasputtotheconference.Agreementwasquicklyreachedallaroundandthe youngpromotersdidatrialdoor-to-doorcampaign ofthestreetsintheparish.

Theiropeningwent:"Weareselling.aCatholic periodicalcalled"TheRecord."Ifthepeoplewere interested,theboyswouldpromisetodeliver faithfullyeachweek-evenduringtheschool holidays.

thankstoHisGracefor addressingtheFederation andgivingthemhisadvice andencouragement.

Mr.Donnellysaidthatthe Federationneededtheequal goodregardofallandthe widestpublicityforits work.Ithadonlymadea beginning.Therewasalong anddifficulttaskahead, particularlyhardoverthe nextyear,callingforprayer andgoodworks.

Hesaidthatitgavethe Federationconfidencethat itconstantlyhadHisGrace's prayersandblessingforits work.

Official Approval Of AnzacDay

HisGracetheArchbishopannouncesthat Catholicsnowhaveofficialapprovaltoattend the Commemoration CeremonyandService tobeheldonthePerth EsplanadeonAnzac Day.

Theserviceisnewa civiloneconductedby thePresidentofthe R.S.L.,andfollowsthe samepatternassimilar ceremoniesconductedin suchcapitalsasCanberraandMelbourne.

Everythingwitha denominationalappearancehasbeendeleted fromtheceremony.

Therecitationofthe Lord'sPrayerwillbe ledbyHisExcellency the Governor,Sir CharlesGairdner,and theaddresswillbe givenbytheState PresidentoftheR.S.L., Mr.W.S.Lonnie.

Inthefirstweekofthetrialrun,25copieswere delivered.Lastweek136copiesweredeliveredin theconfinesoftheSubiacoparish.

Inthattimetheenthusiasmoftheboysnever waned.Somedoubtswereexpressedthatduring theholidaysfromschool,withsomanygoingaway, thatdeliverieswouldnotbemade.'

Here,theoneswhowereleftdoubleduptokeep theirever-increasingclientele.

Thedifficulttimewasoverandwhenschool resumed,theboys,havingprovedtheirworth, formedthefirstCatholicPressSquad.

Theyareallvolunteersandworkinanapostolic spirittoachievetheirslogan-ACATHOLIC PAPERINEVERYCATHOLICHOME.More volunteerscameforwardtoassisttheLegionaires intheirwork.TheSecondFormboyswere approachedandmanyquicklyjoined.Theyproved theirreliabilityandbecamemembersofthe CatholicPressSquadatSt.Joseph's.

Boysfromotherparisheshavecaughtontothe ideaandareeagertoestablishtheirownsquads.

LOCALCAST DIDWELL

TheNationalDirectoroftheIonaPassion Play,Rev.T.Shortall,0.M.I.,saidonhis arrivalbackinQueenslandfromPerth:"Iam reallysorrythatthecostthattravelledto PerthlastyearwerenotabletobeinPerth thisyeartowitnesstheveryfineproduction byMissCoralieCondon."

FatherShortallsaidthat thecastwouldfeeljustly proudandperhapsvery humble,realisingthatitwas throughtheirworkandsacrificethattheplayhadbeen introducedtoPerth.

Hesaidthatthecastfrom peopleinPerthnumbered over200andcontainedsome outstandingactors. "Theproductionwas polished,simpleanddirect, andtherewasnodoubtthat itachieveditspurposein bringingthePassionof Christnearertothehearts ofthepeople,"hesaid.

FatherShortallsaidthat aspecialwordofgratitude wasduetothePerthcommitteeunderthechairmanshipofMr.G.Somers.He saidthattheylaboured underthegreatdisadvantageofhavingtoorganise

PassionTime

InthefirstcenturiesoftheChurcheverySundaywas anEasterSunday,forthemainthemeeachweekwas therecollectionofthevictoryofChristtheSaviour;Thiswasheightenedbythenarrowview,thatasthe MediterraneanpeopleshadnowreceivedtheGospel, theendoftheworldmightcomeanyday.

Astimewentby,itwasarranged,firstinJerusalem, tohavetheanniversaryoftheResurrectioncelebrated withgreatersolemnity,coincidingwiththeoriginal JewishPassover.Inordertodojusticetothiscommemoration,itbecamethecustom,beforethefourth century,toconsiderthewholePassionpartbypart: thismeantextendingitforthewholeweekbeginning withtheProcessionofPalms.Thenanotherweek joinedtothiswasdevotedratherexplicitlytothe rememberingofHisdeath,withanincreaseoffasting andspiritualobservances.Theresultisthatthetwo weeksofPassiontide,withtwoPassionSundays,area moreferventimmediatepreludetoreceivingtheblessingsoftheEasterFestival.

TheClearReminders

Thesombrepurpleinvogueisaclearremindedthe Churchusesasanexternalnoteofmourningfordeath, anditsextensiontothecoveringofdevotionalobjects (statues,picturesandeventhecrucifix)istocentrethe mindontheRedeemeralone.

ChurchWorship

Therehearsalofallthesepropheciesandtypesand throughoutthewhole ChurchtoseeherplaceinGod'sdesigns,tonotethe gracesandblessingsofferedherbyherFounder, andtoshowgratitudeforHisprotection.Ithonours. andpraises,andworshipstheAuthorofallGood,our CreatorandRedeemer,todothesethings,asatribute toHisgloryandmajesty.

Thisisworshipnotonlyfromthegeneralbody,but itisduefromeachofusinparticular,foreveryindividualoweshispersonaldevotiontoOurLordand Saviour.MyadoptionintoHisfamilybyBaptism,the endlesschainofgoodsandgracesthatfollowit,the helpsofthevarioussacraments,ofprayerandinstruction,thepardonandtheblessings,theincentivesand theexamples-thatis.allthebenefitsderivingfrom thePassionandDeathandChrist-theseallbuildup aspecialdebtofmyown,andaretheparticularreason formydutyofworship.

PrivateAndPersonalWorship

TheawarenessthatmypersonalwellbeingisGod's care,that,inSt.Paul'swords,"HelovedMEand deliveredhimselfforME,"istheprincipalmotivefor beingreadynowtoprofitbyHisredemption,forusing gladly,gratefully,andconstantlytheaidsHegives: thisisthewayoffulfillingmypurposeofreaching eternallifebyacompleteresurrectiontonewlife;and thiswilladvanceGod'sglorybyHissuccessinme.

ThePassiontidetrendoftheChurchbearsonthe pointthat,whilstunitingwithallasasociety,each memberisnottobelostinthecrowdortobeconfused bythebroadmemoriesandends,butwilttakehis individualpartinpreparingforarenewaloflifeand dedicationinthepresentserviceoftheDivineSaviour.

TheCatholicEducationCouncilsetforthitsown guidelinesinthismatterinafive-pointcharterfor Britishschools:

IPAchildhastherighttorespectforhisindividual personality; Asenseofpersonalresponsibilitymustbe developedinchildren:

ThecounciltoldtheCentralAdvisoryCouncilfor Education:"Wesuggestthatthedutyofsummoningparentstoshouldertheirresponsibilitiesshould lieheavilyonthegovernment."

IturgedthatboththeEducationMinistryand localauthoritiesgiveparentsabiggervoicein schoolaffairsasapreliminarytocreatingrespect fortheparents'rightsineducation.Itasserted thatlocalschoolauthoritiestoooftentreatparents asmereobstaclestothesmoothrunningofthe bureaucraticmachine.

TheCatholicmemorandumalsorecommended positivetraininginpurity.

"Itseemstousthatalltoooftenchastityis commendedtochildreninthedifficultperiodsof pubertyandadolescenceonnobetterbasisthanthe dangersofsexualmisconduct,"itsaid."Thisis rathersimilartoandnomoresatisfactorythanthe argumentthatcrimedoesnotpay,whichis notoriouslyunconvincingtothecriminalclasses."

NatureSetsItsOwnLimits

Naturesetslimitstotherealwealththatwecanuse. Formanyyearsnow, CatholicsalloverAustralia havefeltleftoutofthe observanceofAnzacDay.

Thiswasareversalofthe conditionsofservicewhich theyfoundtopertainduring thetimewhichtheyfought anddiedfortheircountry intimeofwar.Heretheir religiousbeliefwasrespectedandCatholicchaplains weresuppliedtotheForces. NoCatholicwasmadeto participateinthereligious serviceofanydenomination orso-callednon-denominationalserviceswhenthese wereledbyministersof religion.

Afterthewaritbecamea differentmatter,whenon everyAnzacDay,becauseof thearrangementsthatwere made-orleftunmade-they couldnotjoinintheparade oftheirfellow-soldiersto commemoratethefallenbe-

causeofthedenominational flavouroftheservices.

Now,throughnegotiation runningovermanyyears, theformoftheAnzacDay ceremonieshasbeenso changedthatitdoesnot prohibitaCatholicfrom attending.

Thetechnicalphrase "communicatioinsacris" (communionindivine things)willnotapplybecausetheprayerswillbe ledbyalayman.Nopriest oranyministerofreligion willbeformallyandofficiallypresentinthecapacity ofleaderofthereligious sectionofthecommemoratingfunction. Catholicex-soldiersand soldierswillbegladthat thisbusinessbetweenthe R.S.L.andtheChurchhas beenclearedupatlastand therewillbenomoreconfusionorthedisheartening callof"Catholicsfallout!"

March19endedmorethan sevenlongyearsofguerrillawarfarebyMoslemsseekingindependence fromFrance.

Butthenationwasalready inthegripofanotherkind ofcivilwar;theSecretArmy Organisation(O.A.S.),a terroristorganisationformed byEuropeans,wasstepping upitskillinginorderto keepAlgeriaFrench.

Over90percentofAlgeria's101millionpeople areMoslems,primarilyof ArabandBerberstock.The Catholicpopulationtotals 950,000,representingthe overwhernlingmajorityof thoseofEuropeanextraction.

Whatishappeningisa repetitionofachapterin Algeria'spast.Thiswasthe areaoftheDonatistschism, whichhadbeenragingin North-WestAfricaformore thanhalfacenturywhen ST.AUGUSTINEbecame BishopofHippoin396.

HereticalMarauders

TheDonatistsheldthat thesacramentswereinvalid ifadministeredbyunworthy bishopsorpriests.After PopeSt.Miltiades-himself aNorthAfrican-ruled againstthem,theDonatist leadersassociatedthemselveswithviolentbandsof marauderswhorushedinto battlecrying"Praisesbeto God."

St.Augustine,whoseoldSee cityofHippowassituated justsouthofAlgeria'smajor portcityofBone,sawthe Christianpeoplesplitby twootherheresies.Theresultwasthathewasforced todeveloptheChurch's teachingstoastagebeyond thatreachedbyanyofhis predecessors,therebyinfluencingalllatertheological developmentandearning enduringvenerationfor himselfasoneofthepre. eminentdoctorsofthe Church.

SmallbodiesofCatholics hadbornewitnesstotheir Faithofteninthepreceding centuriesofupheaval,They includedST.RAYMOND NONNATUS,whoworked amongtheslavesofAlgiers inthe13thcentury;BLESSEDRAYMONDLULL, martyredatBougiein1316; andtheVENERABLE GERONIMO,buriedalive atAlgiersin1569.

Thefireisbelievedto havestartedinthenun's lunch-roomwhichwascompletelydestroyedtogether withitscontentswhichincludedarefrigerator.The corridorextendingalong severaloftheclassrooms wasalsodestroyed.Inother roomswallandceilings Acredamaged.

Thebuildingsaffected werebuiltofweatherboard withcorrugatedironroofing. Theyformedatriangular blockconsistingofthree classroomsandtworooms usedasachurch.

Thesectionusedasa churchwasonceSt.Augustine'sChurch,Yarraville. Theotherroomswerebuilt atdifferenttimessincethe KingsvilleParishwaserectedin1954. Threehundredandeighty

Oneofthefirstoffersof helpwasreceivedfromthe Y.C.W.Co-operativeSociety.Itgay.:adonationand offeredtoreplaceatcost priceanyfurnishingsand fittings,lostinthefire. FatherLeonardsaidthat justbeforelastChristmas £2000wasspentonpainting theroomsthathadbeenaffectedbythefire.Itwas tooearlyforhimtosay whatimprovisedarrangementswouldbemadetoaccommodatethechildrenattendingthedamagedschool, buthewashopefulofbeingabletousepartofthe churchbuilding. FatherLeonardsaw'the firefromthepresbyteryin nearbyDukeStreet.His firstadwastohurrytothe churchtoremovetheBlessedSacramentandsacred vesselsfromthetaberttacle.

TheUrsulineMissionaries oftheSacredHeart,popularlyknownastheItalian Sisters,recentlycelebrated thetenthanniversaryof theirarrivalinWestern Australia.

TheseMissionarySisters arrivedinFremantlein1952 afterhavingbeenexpelled fromcommunistChina.In thisStatetheyfoundedtwo convents-oneatCarilla, wheretheyconductthe parishschool,andtheother atSt.Charles'Seminary, Guildford.

Ontheoccasionofthis tenthanniversary,the ItalianAssociationsof Perth,Karagullenand Roleystoneshowedtheir highesteemfortheSisters bypresentingthemwitha newcar.HisGraceblessed thecaratSt.Brigid's Church,WestPerth,inthe presenceoftheItalianViceConsul;Dr.Argento,anda representationofofficials fromtheItalianAssociations ofPerth.

LastSaturday,March31, theSisterscommenceda

courseofclassesinItalian grammarattheItalianClub Rooms,FitzgeraldStreet WestPerth,andtheItalian communityintheFremantle areaiswaitingkeenlytosee thebeginningofanother projectoftheSistersforthe nearfuture.

Thisprojectwillbethe constructionofacentrefor religiousandsocialassistancetotheItaliansofFremantle.Attachedtothe centrewillbeakindergartenconductedbythe Sisters.

Anexchangeofreports andcorrespondencewasbegunwithFederationsin fourStates.Mr.Mahoney saidthathehadvisitedthe EasternStatesandhad fruitfuldiscussionswith membersofthecouncilsof theFederationinthree States.Hesaidthatitwas

Mr.Mahoneysaidthatthe attitudeofotherchurchauthoritiesandoftheschool headmastersischangingto atleastalimitedacceptance oftheneedfor,andjustice of,applyingsomepartof publicfundstoindependent schools.Itseemslikelythat thepresentyearwillseedevelopmentsinthisdirection thatwillbeoftremendous importance.

SisterwasbornatAlbany onMay31,1889.Shewas theeldestdaughterofMr. JamesCorbett,wholater becameCityTreasurer.and HelenaCorbett.Whenabout tenyearsofageshebecame aboarderattheDominican Convent,Greenough.

Onhernineteenthbirthdaysheenteredthecommunityasapostulant,being thefirstboardertojointhe ranksof .2Sisters.She madeher ,gioukprofessiononJanuary17,1911, andinJanuary1961she celebratedherGoldenJubilee,atwhich,inspiteof herincapacity,sheentered joyouslyintothecelebrations.

ItisAustralia'sgoodfortunethatoneofthemilitary officerswhoarrivedwith theFirstFleet,Watkin Tench,wasaculturedand genialyoungmanwhopossessedahappyflairfor notingclowninsimplebut colourfulnarrativethe eventsofwhichheseasan observerbothonthetrip outtoAustraliaandduring thefirstfouryearsofthe colony'sstruggleforexistence.

ThevoyageoftheFirst Fleetisdescribedinabook whichTenchpublishedin 1789underthetitle"A NarrativeoftheExpedition toBotanyBay,"andhisexperiencesafterarrivalwere recountedinasecondbook, "ACompleteAccountofthe SettlementofPortJackson," whichappearedin1793.

Tenchwasnorun-of-themillsoldier.Hewasakeen observeroflifeabouthim, andwas29yearsofage whenhearrivedinAustralia.Hewasobviously well-educated,hadpassed sometimeinFrancewhere hehadlearnedtospeakthe languagewithreasonable fluency,enoughatleastfor himtoactasinterpreterfor AdmiralBlighatalatter datewhentheywereboth Prisonersofwarin1794.

From1777to1779hewas onseaserviceoffNorth Americawherehisshipwas capturedbyanAmerican frigateafterbeingdriven ashorebyaFrenchsquadron.Hespentthreemonths asaprisonerofwarin Marylandandwasreleased inOctoberofthatyear.

Aperiodofhalf-paybeganin1786,threeyears aftertheAmericanWarof Independenceended,arid Tenchwasgladoftheopportunitytoofferhimself foratermofservicewitha corpsofMarinestoaccompanytheconvictships.to BotanyBayandtomaintain orderinthenewsettlement. Whenshewastranslatingageo, graphytextbook,LadyMcCarthygot theideathatchildrenwouldlearn moreeasilyiftheycould"feel"the outlinesoftheterritoriesbeing studied.Thisledtothepreparation ofreliefmapsanddrawingsofphysicalfeatures,suchasdelta,glacier, cape,isthmus,etc.

LadyMcCarthywassothrilled withthechildren'senthusiasmfor theseillustrationsthatsheextended herworktostorybooks.Imagine thechildren'sdelightwhenshepresentedthemwith"TreasureIsland," "TheCoralIsland"and"TheTale ofTwoCities,"allrelief-illustrated aswellastranslatedbyherinto braille.

Themoreknowledge peoplehaveofcommunist methods,themorehesitant theyareinassessingthe faultofthoseinvolvedin theunlawfulepiscopalconsecrations.

Theypointoutthefollowing: Theinformationabout theseChineseCatholics, theirpronouncementsand theallegedconsecrationsof newbishopscomesalmost entirelyfromcommunist sources.Itiscertainthatin communistnewsreleases eventsareoftendistorted, statementsarefabricated andattributedtopersons whonevermadethem.

Whiletheevidencethat someunlawful(i.e.without theauthorityoftheHoly See)consecrationshave takenplaceinChinais strong,eachreportmustbe takenwithutmostcaution.

NobodyoutsideChina knowsallthephysicaland psychologicalconditionsunderwhichthereportedcongressesandconsecrations havetakenplace.Itis knownthatsomeofthose whoparticipatedendured extremeill-treatmentbeforehand.Terrorisavowedlyaninstrumentofcommunistseverywhere. ChangeOfMind

Atthisfirstcongressthe associationdeclaredthatit wouldkeep"purelyreligioustics"withtheVatican. Atthesecondcongressheld lastJanuary,theassociation allegedlyresolvedto"get ridofthecontrol"andof the"reactionaryinfluences" oftheHolySee.

InDecember,1957,the communistpressannounced thatanewbishophadbeen "elected"forChengtu.On February16,1958,hewas consecrated,thefirstof41 or42nowreportedlyconsecratedbishops,withoutthe oftheHolySee. Thebishopwhowassaidto haveperformedthefirstof theseconsecrationsdiedin 1961.

Beforetheendof1958, 23Chinesepriestswerereportedtohavereceivedepiscopalconsecrationunlawfully.In1959,sevenoreight werereportedconsecrated. (The"election"wassometimesannouncedayearor morebeforetheconsecrationtookplace.)InApril, 1960,fourpriestswereallegedlyconsecratedin Shanghai.Thenextconsecrationreportedwasofseven onJanuary21,1962,in Peking.

Itmustberemembered thatsofarthe"Patriotic Association"istheonlyorganisationwithwhichgeese bishops,andwhoevercooperatedwiththem,are connected.Theyhaveform. ednobodythatcallsitself achurch.Theyhaveformulatednonewcreed,have creatednonewliturgy.

Theultimateintentionof thecommunists-toelimi-_ natetheCatholicreligion entirely-isbeyondquestion. Buttheyrealisethatthey areonlyinthepreliminary stages.

Theparticipantsinthe lastcongressofthe"PatrioticAssociation"aresaid tohavenumbered256.That numberprobablyincluded communistcadres,officials assignedtowatchandcontrolthemeeting.

ThemartyrsfortheFaith undercommunisminChina havecertainlybeenmore numerousthatthat.The ChineseCatholics-prelates, priests,Religiousandlaitynowingaolsandlabour campsbecauseoftheirfidelitytotheHolySeearefar morenumerous.

Thedayafterthisconversationtookplace,Father BonnetsetoutforNgo Rongeonmissionarywork. Hisfollowerstriedtopreventhimfromgoing,but uponhisinsistence,they wentalongwithhim.They stoppedatoneplacewhere thepriestsaidMassand thensetoutagain.They werenotfaralongwhenthe priestpickedupapieceof paperthatwasconspicuous inanichealongthepath. Hereaditandputitinhis pocket.Itmayhavebeen hisdeathnoticesignedby theVietminh.Thepaper wasnotfoundonhisperson afterhisassassination.After offeringeveningMassagain inasecondvillage,hewent ontoNgoRonge,wherehe wantedtospendthenight. Heateabowlofriceand gotonhisway.Hehad walkedonlyafewhundred yardswhenhewasshot fromambush.Hehadwalked fasterthanhiscompanions. Whentheycaughtuptohim hewasalreadydead.He washoldinghisRosaryin hisrighthand.Hiscompanionscalledtotheinvisibleassailants,saying, "Youcankillus,too."

TheDioceseofKontumis aboutfortymileseastofthe Cambodia.Laos,Vietnam border.Statisticsof1959revealthatthemission,which isconfidedtotheParis ForeignMissionSociety,had 65,000Catholicsand8,753 catechumensinatotalpopulationof755,000.TheMost ReverendP.L.Seitz,M.E.P., isBishopofKontum.

TheChurchinSouthVietnamonJune30,1959,numbered1,226,318baptised Catholicsand97,407catechumentsinatotalpopulationof12,900,000.The EcclesiasticalHierarchywas establishedinthecountry onNovember24,1960.Eight ofthetenbishopsofthe countryareVietnameseand 89percentofitsclergyis alsonativeofthecountry.
