HisGracegavespecial thankstotheMostRev.L. J.Goody,BishopofBunbury,forthesupportgiven totheFederationinhisdioceseandfortheadmirable pastoralletteroneducation whichHisLordshiphad giveninAdvent.
HisGracesaidthatthis pastoralletterhadbeena factorinbringingabouta recenttelevisiondebateon thepositionofallindependentschools.Inthisdebate, HisGracesaid;Mr.W.A. Mahoney,presidentofthe ParentsandFriends'Federation,hadearnedrespect andgainedgreatsympathy, understandingandsupport forourjustclaimsineducation.
Provocation
HisGracesaid:"Hehad acquittedhimselfexceptionallyandhadgainedrespect andadmirationasaCatholic laymanbyhispatienceand forbearanceundergreat provocation."
ItwaspointedoutbyHis Gracethatfromthisdebate itcouldberealisedthat Catholicswereatlastno longeraloneintheirfightfor justiceineducationandthat forthefirsttimein67years otherswerejoininginthe battle."Theywantedour support,"hesaid,"andthis wouldbegladlyandwholeheartedlygiven."
HisGracesaid:"TheexpressionofthePublic SchoolsHeadmasters'Conferenceontheneedforassistancetoschoolswasparticularlygratifying.With suchpowerfulallies,somethingmightbebrought aboutinWesternAustralia

MostAffiliated
HisGraceexpressedhis personalgratitudeforthe largenumbersofschools andparisheswhichhad formedParentsandFriends' Associationsandaffiliated themwiththeFederation.It wasparticularlygratifying thatpracticallyallsecondaryschoolswerenowaffiliated.Buttherewerestill manyschoolsandparishes whohadstilltojoininthe greatworkoftheFederation.Thereweresomeassociationswhich,thoughmembers,didnotpaytheirsubscriptions.Allschoolswere benefitingintheworkof theFederationandall shouldseethattheFederationhadthefundstocarry onafightfromwhichall wouldcontinuetobenefit.
HisGraceemphasised againthatitwashiswish thatallCatholicschoolsin theArchdioceseshouldhave affiliatedassociations.
HisGracecongratulated theofficersoftheFederationCouncilontheirwork, especiallyMgr.Bourke, theirspiritualdirector.He regrettedthattheyhadlost theservicesofMr.Carol LarkinandofMr.BillEnglish,whohadsuchexpert knowledgeinthefieldof education.
HewishedtheFederation everyblessingandsuccess inthehardandimportant yearwhichlayaheadof themandespeciallycharged themtohaverecourseto prayerforguidanceintheir work.

NotthetypeofPressGangwhichindaysofyore waswonttopersuade-albeitsomewhatforciblythereluctantyouthofEnglandtoserveinthe King'sNavee,butaPressGangwithadifference.
InJuneof1961theJuniorLegionofMaryat St.Joseph'sMaristBrothers'College,Subiaco, indicatedadesiretohelptheCatholicPress.The boysdecidedthattheywouldpromotethesaleof "Records"intheirparish.Thisideacamefromthe boysthemselvesandtheyputtheirplantooneof theMaristBrotherswhohaschargeoftheLegion. HeconferredwiththeSt.VincentdePaulSociety manwhohaschargeof"TheRecord"atSubiaco andthematterwasputtotheconference.Agreementwasquicklyreachedallaroundandthe youngpromotersdidatrialdoor-to-doorcampaign ofthestreetsintheparish.
Theiropeningwent:"Weareselling.aCatholic periodicalcalled"TheRecord."Ifthepeoplewere interested,theboyswouldpromisetodeliver faithfullyeachweek-evenduringtheschool holidays.
thankstoHisGracefor addressingtheFederation andgivingthemhisadvice andencouragement.
Mr.Donnellysaidthatthe Federationneededtheequal goodregardofallandthe widestpublicityforits work.Ithadonlymadea beginning.Therewasalong anddifficulttaskahead, particularlyhardoverthe nextyear,callingforprayer andgoodworks.
Hesaidthatitgavethe Federationconfidencethat itconstantlyhadHisGrace's prayersandblessingforits work.

Official Approval Of AnzacDay
HisGracetheArchbishopannouncesthat Catholicsnowhaveofficialapprovaltoattend the Commemoration CeremonyandService tobeheldonthePerth EsplanadeonAnzac Day.
Theserviceisnewa civiloneconductedby thePresidentofthe R.S.L.,andfollowsthe samepatternassimilar ceremoniesconductedin suchcapitalsasCanberraandMelbourne.
Everythingwitha denominationalappearancehasbeendeleted fromtheceremony.
Therecitationofthe Lord'sPrayerwillbe ledbyHisExcellency the Governor,Sir CharlesGairdner,and theaddresswillbe givenbytheState PresidentoftheR.S.L., Mr.W.S.Lonnie.
Inthefirstweekofthetrialrun,25copieswere delivered.Lastweek136copiesweredeliveredin theconfinesoftheSubiacoparish.
Inthattimetheenthusiasmoftheboysnever waned.Somedoubtswereexpressedthatduring theholidaysfromschool,withsomanygoingaway, thatdeliverieswouldnotbemade.'

Thedifficulttimewasoverandwhenschool resumed,theboys,havingprovedtheirworth, formedthefirstCatholicPressSquad.
Theyareallvolunteersandworkinanapostolic spirittoachievetheirslogan-ACATHOLIC PAPERINEVERYCATHOLICHOME.More volunteerscameforwardtoassisttheLegionaires intheirwork.TheSecondFormboyswere approachedandmanyquicklyjoined.Theyproved theirreliabilityandbecamemembersofthe CatholicPressSquadatSt.Joseph's.

Formanyyearsnow, CatholicsalloverAustralia havefeltleftoutofthe observanceofAnzacDay.
Thiswasareversalofthe conditionsofservicewhich theyfoundtopertainduring thetimewhichtheyfought anddiedfortheircountry intimeofwar.Heretheir religiousbeliefwasrespectedandCatholicchaplains weresuppliedtotheForces. NoCatholicwasmadeto participateinthereligious serviceofanydenomination orso-callednon-denominationalserviceswhenthese wereledbyministersof religion.
Afterthewaritbecamea differentmatter,whenon everyAnzacDay,becauseof thearrangementsthatwere made-orleftunmade-they couldnotjoinintheparade oftheirfellow-soldiersto commemoratethefallenbe-
causeofthedenominational flavouroftheservices.
Now,throughnegotiation runningovermanyyears, theformoftheAnzacDay ceremonieshasbeenso changedthatitdoesnot prohibitaCatholicfrom attending.
Thetechnicalphrase "communicatioinsacris" (communionindivine things)willnotapplybecausetheprayerswillbe ledbyalayman.Nopriest oranyministerofreligion willbeformallyandofficiallypresentinthecapacity ofleaderofthereligious sectionofthecommemoratingfunction. OnSunday.March25,the DominicanSistersinWesternAustralialostoneof theirbestknownandbest lovedSisterswiththedeath ofSisterMaryAugustine Corbett.
SisterwasbornatAlbany onMay31,1889.Shewas theeldestdaughterofMr. JamesCorbett,wholater becameCityTreasurer.and HelenaCorbett.Whenabout tenyearsofageshebecame aboarderattheDominican Convent,Greenough.
Onhernineteenthbirthdaysheenteredthecommunityasapostulant,being thefirstboardertojointhe ranksof .2Sisters.She madeher ,gioukprofessiononJanuary17,1911, andinJanuary1961she celebratedherGoldenJubilee,atwhich,inspiteof herincapacity,sheentered joyouslyintothecelebrations.
Duringherreligiouslife Sistertaughtinmostofthe Order'sschoolsinthisState andwasSuperioratMeekatharra,Leonora,Bedford ParkandMorawa.
Duringthelastnine monthsofherlifeshewas confinedtoawheelchair, butthisincreasedrather thanhinderedherpowerfor good,andmanysadhearts werelightenedbyhersympathy,whichwentoutreadilytoothers,butwasnever wastedonherself.
Theillnesswhichterminatedherlifewasashort. butaverypainfulone,but shemadenoreferenceat alltohersufferings,only expressinghergratitudefor thecareandattentionbestowedonher,andadesire

Themoreknowledge peoplehaveofcommunist methods,themorehesitant theyareinassessingthe faultofthoseinvolvedin theunlawfulepiscopalconsecrations.
Theypointoutthefollowing: Theinformationabout theseChineseCatholics, theirpronouncementsand theallegedconsecrationsof newbishopscomesalmost entirelyfromcommunist sources.Itiscertainthatin communistnewsreleases eventsareoftendistorted, statementsarefabricated andattributedtopersons whonevermadethem.
Whiletheevidencethat someunlawful(i.e.without theauthorityoftheHoly See)consecrationshave takenplaceinChinais strong,eachreportmustbe takenwithutmostcaution.
NobodyoutsideChina knowsallthephysicaland psychologicalconditionsunderwhichthereportedcongressesandconsecrations havetakenplace.Itis knownthatsomeofthose whoparticipatedendured extremeill-treatmentbeforehand.Terrorisavowedlyaninstrumentofcommunistseverywhere. Itisnotoriousthatthe Chinesecommunistshave specialisedinreducinghumanbeingstoastateof subnormaldocility.Foreign missionarieswhohavepassedthroughHongKongduringthe1950'shavemade known,frompersonalexperience,themethodsnow usedinChinatoshatterthe mindsandwillsofprisoners.
Thecommunistshate religion,buttheyaretoo shrewdtotrytodestroyit bylarge-scalemassacresor otherfrontalattacks.They intendtomakemembersof theCatholicChurchweaken itfromwithinbydeceptive compromisesandafatal chainofgradualsurrender.

Thisassociationtookshape inacongressheldinJuly, 1957,underthepresidency (reportedly)ofArchbishop IgnatiusP'iShu-shihof Mukden,whohadbeen thoughttohavediedin pison.
ChangeOfMind
Atthisfirstcongressthe associationdeclaredthatit wouldkeep"purelyreligioustics"withtheVatican. Atthesecondcongressheld lastJanuary,theassociation allegedlyresolvedto"get ridofthecontrol"andof the"reactionaryinfluences" oftheHolySee.
InDecember,1957,the communistpressannounced thatanewbishophadbeen "elected"forChengtu.On February16,1958,hewas consecrated,thefirstof41 or42nowreportedlyconsecratedbishops,withoutthe oftheHolySee. Thebishopwhowassaidto haveperformedthefirstof theseconsecrationsdiedin 1961.
Beforetheendof1958, 23Chinesepriestswerereportedtohavereceivedepiscopalconsecrationunlawfully.In1959,sevenoreight werereportedconsecrated. (The"election"wassometimesannouncedayearor morebeforetheconsecrationtookplace.)InApril, 1960,fourpriestswereallegedlyconsecratedin Shanghai.Thenextconsecrationreportedwasofseven onJanuary21,1962,in Peking.
Itmustberemembered thatsofarthe"Patriotic Association"istheonlyorganisationwithwhichgeese bishops,andwhoevercooperatedwiththem,are connected.Theyhaveform. ednobodythatcallsitself achurch.Theyhaveformulatednonewcreed,have creatednonewliturgy.
Theultimateintentionof thecommunists-toelimi-_ natetheCatholicreligion entirely-isbeyondquestion. Buttheyrealisethatthey areonlyinthepreliminary stages.
Theparticipantsinthe lastcongressofthe"PatrioticAssociation"aresaid tohavenumbered256.That numberprobablyincluded communistcadres,officials assignedtowatchandcontrolthemeeting.
ThemartyrsfortheFaith undercommunisminChina havecertainlybeenmore numerousthatthat.The ChineseCatholics-prelates, priests,Religiousandlaitynowingaolsandlabour campsbecauseoftheirfidelitytotheHolySeearefar morenumerous.

About5,000personscame onDecember15toKontum topaytheirrespectsandto prayforFatherTheophilus Bonnet,M.E.P.,whowas killedseveraldaysearlier bytheVietminh. Weareinpossessionof thefollowingdetailsconcerningthemissionary'slast days.OnDecember10three Vietminhcommunistshada conversationwithhim.The followingisthemannerin whichthedialoguewasreportedbythepriestand subsequentlyrelatedby others:

TheVietminhhadno answerreadyforthelast, sotheymerelylaughed. themeantime,thepeopleof thevillage,thinkingthatthe threeVietminhwantedto killthepriest,surrounded thehouse.However,the situationwithinthehouse loadcometothepointwhere thepriestoffered.aniseand cigarettestothesoldiers. Afterafirstrefusal,they accepted,butnotwithout asking,"Wouldyoutreat soldiersoftheNational Armyinthesameway?" Towhichthepriestsaid, "Yes,becauseIdonotengageinpolitics."
THEDEATHNOTICE
Thedayafterthisconversationtookplace,Father BonnetsetoutforNgo Rongeonmissionarywork. Hisfollowerstriedtopreventhimfromgoing,but uponhisinsistence,they wentalongwithhim.They stoppedatoneplacewhere thepriestsaidMassand thensetoutagain.They werenotfaralongwhenthe priestpickedupapieceof paperthatwasconspicuous inanichealongthepath. Hereaditandputitinhis pocket.Itmayhavebeen hisdeathnoticesignedby theVietminh.Thepaper wasnotfoundonhisperson afterhisassassination.After offeringeveningMassagain inasecondvillage,hewent ontoNgoRonge,wherehe wantedtospendthenight. TheDioceseofKontumis aboutfortymileseastofthe Cambodia.Laos,Vietnam border.Statisticsof1959revealthatthemission,which isconfidedtotheParis ForeignMissionSociety,had 65,000Catholicsand8,753 catechumensinatotalpopulationof755,000.TheMost ReverendP.L.Seitz,M.E.P., isBishopofKontum.
SOUTHVIETNAM
TheChurchinSouthVietnamonJune30,1959,numbered1,226,318baptised Catholicsand97,407catechumentsinatotalpopulationof12,900,000.The EcclesiasticalHierarchywas establishedinthecountry onNovember24,1960.Eight ofthetenbishopsofthe countryareVietnameseand 89percentofitsclergyis alsonativeofthecountry.
