Afurthereffortinthegigantictaskof unassistededucationintheArchdiocesewas completedlastSundaywhenHisGraceblessedthenewhighschoolfortheSistersof MercyatVictoriaPark.

Thenewschool,builtbyMr.A.B.Power, cost£36,000andwillcaterfor300pupils. Theschoolhasninerooms,apartfromoffice accommodationandcommercialandscience instructionrooms.(Seefeature,Page14.)

TheparishpriestofSt. Jfaachim'sparish,Victoria Park,Rt.Rev.T.Lenihan, welcomedHisGrace,who hadjustcompletedthe blessingofthenewbuilding. MonsignorLenihanactedas chairmanfortheoccasion.

HisGrace,highlighting theproblemsofeducation todaysaid:"Secondaryeducationisnoteasytoorganise today.Theproblemof secondaryeducationisexercisingthemindsofeducationalistshereinAustralia -and,infact,everywhere.

"ThetaskoftheSisters whowillstaffthisschoolis particularlydifficult.They willbecalledontoprepare manyoftheirgirlstoundertakestudiesleadingtoprofessionaycareers-because manymorewomenarenow enteringhighereducational institutionstoqualifyfor highlyspecialisedandprofessionalwork.Andatthe sametimetheSistersare expectedtocaterforthe specialemotionalandphysicalinterestsofthegirlsin ordertopreparethemfor thevocationofrunninga homeandrearingafamily. Inaword,theSistersmust atoneandthesametime preparetheirstudentstobe wage-earnersandhomemakers.Andthisisnoteasy todo.ButtheSisters,with theirqualificationsandexperience,will,weareindeed confident,beequaltothe task.

WHATismorenaturalthanthattheIrish peopleshouldhaveaNationalFestival? CouldyouimaginetwoAmericans,say,atthe NorthPole,allowingIndependenceDayto passunnoticed?WouldtwoEnglishmen isolated,say,atExmouthGulf,notbecelebratingtheQueen'sBirthday?TheFrench, andtheScots,andtheAustralianswouldact likewise.Suchevents,besidesfostering patriotism,aretheoccasionofjoyand pleasure,andareusefultocementkindred andfriendship.

But,fortheIrish,thereisthisuncommonnote-that theirfestivalisasaint'sdayandtheircelebrationis clearlyreligious.ItspringsfromtheirgratitudetoSt. Patrick,bringingthetruefaithtotheirislandsixteen centuriesago:forthisthepeoplearesurelyrightin beinggladandrejoicing,andinthankingGodforthis giftanditssafepreservationagainstfearfulopposition.

ChurchMembersAndFellowCitizens

InAustralia,wejoinreadilywiththeHiberniansin theirjubilation,for,sharingthesamereligiousbelief, wearefellow-membersoftheirsintheChurchofGod, membersoftheMysticalBodyonearth,andhopingto continuethesameinHeaven.JustastheChurchherselfisnotforeignanywhere,forthecommandwasto "teachallnations,"sotherearenoforeignersinthe Church-wearealloftheone"householdofthefaith:" andthereforeshould"rejoicewiththosewhorejoice."

Besides,aglanceatthelocalscenebringshomeour indebtedness.Whenoursettlementbeganin1829. EnglandwasnotrichinCatholicswhomightbe interestedinlivinghere.Asaresult,mostofthethree hundredCatholicsherein1848wereofIrishstock. TheyhadonepermanentIrishpriest,FatherJohn Brady.HebecametheBishopforthewholeState in1845(and,bytheway,theIrishracehasprovided allexceptoneoftheBishopsofPerthuntilnow).* BishopBradyquicklysoughthelptoshepherdhislittle flockandsetaboutconvertingthetwomillionpagan aboriginescalculatedtoexistintheterritory.

TheFirstApostles

TheSpanishBenedictinepriestswerethefirstchief rewardofthisquest,andeveryoneknowsoftheir colossallabours;butafewIrishclergyjoinedthe dioceseatthattime,too.Thepopulationgrew,sothat, in1861,3,786(28percent)hadtobecaredfor.More priestsansweredtheBishop'sappeals,and,asin Clarke'spoem,"TheFightingIrish."about"Kellyand BourkeandO'Shea,'mostoftheirnamesshowtheir Irishorigin.Thisstreamofmissionariesisstillinfull flood. WiththeBenedictinesin1846.theBishopbrought sixIrishSistersofMercy;tenyearslaterSistersof St.JosephoftheApparition,and,beforetheendofthe century,theIrishChristianBrotherscametojoinin theworkofeducation.Then,in1896,cametheSisters ofSt.JohnofGodfromIrelandtobeginnursingon theGoldfields.Thesewereaddedcreditspilingup thedebttotheIrish.

TheRankAndFile

Inregardtotherestoftheimmigrants,everyship broughtsomemoretoliftthenumbers-ex-soldiers andsailors,tradesmen,smallbusinessmen,farmers andmenimpoverishedbythefamineyears,menof talentandvisionseekinganoutletandafuture-and theinflowhascontinuedtilltoday.

AFairConclusion

Intheseways,asalsobyfreeimmigrationlater,the IrishinWesternAustraliaincreased,andtheymultiplied.By1880therewereeightthousandCatholics, mostlyIrishandIrishdescent,aswellasthesprinkling ofProtestantIrish.Itwasamongallthesethatthe Sowers-thepriestsandtheteachers-sowedthegood seed,someofwhich,itistrue,felluponhardandstony ground,butsomefellonthegoodsoil,andbrought forthfruit,sixtyandahundredfold.Thisisthefaith thathaspersevered,ofwhichwereaptheharvest.It canbetrulysaidthat,byandlarge,wenative-born Australianshavebenefiteddeeply,directlyorindirectly, fromthecomingoftheIrish,andhavecontractedabig debttoSt.PatrickandtotheIrishpioneersandtheir descendants,forourfaith,andour'education,andour citizenshipinthisnewworld. Therearegoodreasons,then,forourjoiningthese Celtsintheirdayofgladnessandrejoicing,andfor honouringtheirFatherintheFaith,St.Patrick. JOHNHOGAN

AGENERALcomplaintheardbythose whohavelivedthroughthirtyorforty yearsofourtimesisthegradualdisappearanceofcourtesy,politenessandgentleness amongmen.Thereisnopointinwritinga lamentationaboutit;itisbettertorecall itstruenature.

Courtesyisoftenregardedasameresecularvirtue duetogentlebirth,highbreedingoraffectedsocial training'Itsroots,however,aremuchdeeper.As HilaireBellocwrote:

"OfCourtesy,itismuchless Thancourageorheartorholiness, Yetinmywalksitseemstome ThattheGraceofGodisinCourtesy."

Itisinterestingthattheonlytwomen,outsideof OurBlessedLord,whomScripturedescribesas "goodmen"weretwomenwhopractisedcourtesyJosephofArimetheaandBarnabas.Onemanifested courtesytothedead,theothertotheliving.The firstbravedthescornofRomanpoliticiansandthe jeeringsofamobtobegfortheBodyoftheCrucified Lord.Wrappingitinfinelinen,heburieditina tombwhichhehadreservedforhimself,andwhich heprobablyusedlateron-fortheLordneededit onlythreedays.

Barnabas,theothergoodman,wasasympathiser, akindlysoulwhosawpossibilitiesinotherswho wereignoredorrepugned.ItwasBarnabaswho toldtheApostlesofthepossibilitiesofPaul,and finallyenlistedhimintotheirranks.BothJoseph andBarnabaswererichmen,butbothofthemwere kindmen.

"TheGoldenRule"OfLife

TheDivineInjunction:"Dotoothermenallthat youwouldhavethemdotoyou"isnotsomething negativeinitsencouragementofcourtesy.Itdoes notmeannotleavingcigarettebuttsontheupholsteryofAuntElsieforthereasonthatshemaycome andleavecigarettebuttsonyourdiningroomchair. Rather,itispositive;namely,thedoingofthingsto otherssuchyouwouldlikeotherstodotoyou.You wouldlikethemtorememberyouonyourbirthday, towriteanotetoyouinyourbereavement.Itisa goingoutofthewaytodonicethingsforpeople whethertheybeniceornot.

Courtesyinitsrootsissaintliness;thatiswhy sometimesonewillfinditinthemostunletteredand uneducated,suchasinthesimplepeasantsofEurope; insuchcases,thereisoftenagentlenesswhichfar surpassestheeffeteandsuperficialmannersofthe educated.

Goethewassightwhenhesaid"thereisnooutwardsignofcourtesythatdoesnotrestonadeep moralfoundation."Courtesyisloveinaction:not thelovethatseekstobelovedinreturn,butthe lovethatputsaffectioninothers,andfindsthem loveable.

Acceptingmarriageasaloverelationshipbetween persons,thereisalwaystherealitythat,nomatterhow' manythingstwopeoplemayhaveincommon,there willneverbefoundtwopeopleatthesamestageon theroadoflove.Onepartner,forvariousreasons,will haveagreatercapacitytoloveinaspecialway. Another,agreaterfacilityforacceptinglove.Ineither case,onewillbeinferiorandtheothersuperior.

THEN,thespiritofthemodernsongseemstocreep intotheyoungrelationship-"Whatyoucando,'Ican do-betterthanyou.Ifyoucan MUTUAL lovethatwell,thenIcanlovethat well.Ifyoucanbeasgracious DESTRUCTIONinaccepting,thenIcanbeas cleverinmocking."Inanycase. theendresultismutualdestruction.Inapersonalway, itisasiftheUnitedStatesandRussiasimultaneously haddroppedH-bombsoneachother.Noonewinsin suchadealandeveryoneloses.

Theimportantthinginmrariageistorememberthat itisaunionoflove,not1apartnershipofcompetitors. IfhEisstronginonearea,thisisnoreflectiononher weakness.Itbecomespartofherstrength.Ifshehas competency,heisnotlessofamanbecauseofher superiority.Itbecomespartofhisperfection.

Marriedpeoplearemeanttocomplementeachother. Hisvirtuesaremeanttosupplyforherinadequacies, butthiswillneverhappenunlesssheiswillingtoadmit tohavinginadequacies.Thistakesalittlehumility. Italsotakesalittleconsiderationonhispartsoasnot toflauntIsissuperiority.

Equally,itisawisehusbandwhoencourageshis wifeasacompanionofequalstatureanddignityand, insomeareas,ofgreatercompetencyandstrength.This isnoreflectiononhisleadership,becauseitisoneofthe qualitiesofaleadertobringoutthebestinanother.

Toooften,theloverelationshipinayoungmarriage degeneratesintoabattleofwills.Heseeshimselfasa manoffirmconvictionandhiswifeasastubborn, orneryfemale.Shelooksatherselfasbeingperfectly reasonableandatherhusbandasbeingblindlyobstinate.Eachoperatesfromasenseofrighteousconvictioninattemptingtheconversionoftheother.

Suchcouplesmissthewholepointofmarriage.They aren'tsupposedtoconverteachother.Theyaresupposedtoloveeachotherandtobewillingtobeloved bytheotherwithoutanyjudgingastowhoisthebetter.

Welcomingthe"ceasefire"announcementthe. IrishMinisterforJustice, Mr.CharlesHaughey,a youngandextremelyable Ministerwhoisson-in-law ofPremierSeanLemass, affirmedthatpublicopinion was,indeed,againstthe physicalforcecampaign, thatthereleaseofprisoners hadnotbeenconsideredbut thattherewasmachinery toenablepeopletoundertaketoabidebytheConstitutionand,headded,the Stateneededtheservices ofallitspeople.

Thiswasarealisticinvitation,becausemanyofthe youngmenwhohadbeen engagedinthephysical forcecampaignhavethe highestmotives.Itwas theirmethodsthatpublic opinion,moreconcerned withIrishprospectsinthe CommonMarketear,turnedagainst.

Onoccasionduringthecampaignofviolenceinthepast fiveyears,thesamePublicityBureaudeniedthatit wasresponsibleforcertain acts.Thenwhowas?

InNorthernIreland.the authoritieshavewelcomed thecease-firetoo,buthave saiditwillnotaffectprison termsnowbeingserved.

Theofficialstatementfront theRepublicanPublicity Bureau,whichhasnoaddress,referstoafuture periodofconsolidation.It deniesthatfinancialaidwas receivedfromanyforeign power.Itthanksemigrants fortheirsupport.Itis,ofcourse,widelyknownthat asubstantialpartofthe fundswhichfinancedthe violencecampaigncame fromemigrantsintheUnitedStates.
