Itisalmostacommonplacethatwenowhave moreaccesstotheoriginal intentionsofthecomposer andthishasparticularpoint withregardto"Lucia"for thefullversionisnever playedinanyopera-house andthenormalcutsundoubtedlydetractfromthe opera.ThisDeccaversion iscomplete,apartpossibly forafewtrifles.Oneofthe restorationsisameetingof EnricoandEdgardoina ruinedcastleonWolf'sCrag bynight,totheaccompanimentofaspiritedthunderstorm.Thereasonfornormallycuttingthisisobvious -itstealstheprima-donna's thunder.Sodoesanother cut,atriointheMadScene.
Itisnormalpracticefor "Spargid'amaropianto"to followstraightonfrom"Del cielclemente"withashort orchestralintroductionbetween,Thetrio,however, heightensthedramaticforce oftheMadSceneasLucia disjointedlyre-livesher tragedywhileEnricobecomesmoreandmoreappalledattheconsequences ofhisambition.Theother majorrestorationisascene betweenLuciaandRaimondo,thechaplain;he fromthebestofmotives, persuadesLuciatohelpher brotherbymarryingArturo.
