TheY.C.W.intendsto startoffthisyear'scampaign,"TheNeedsOfOur Neighbour,"withadrivefor thegreaterrealisationof howyouthcanfinditstrue placeintheapostolateof theChurch.
Inhisletter,Father O'Brienpraisedthework whichpriestshavedonefor theY.C.W.inspiteofmany othercallsontheirtime.He saidthatthishelphadbeen noticedand,commentedon asoutstandingbyvisitors fromtheEasternStateswho hadaninterestinY.C.W. affairs.
FatherO'Briensaidthat thevalueoftheY.C.W., whereitisproperlysetup andworking,cannotbe doubted,but"THENEED FORITBECOMESDAILY MOREURGENT."
Citingsomeoftheproblems,theY.C.W.chaplain saidthattheenvironment whichaffectsyoungpeople evenwhilestillatschool andparticularlywhenthey beginworkseemedtobe changingrapidlyforthe worse.
"Commonwealthstatistics," hesaid,"showthatone motherineverythreeis nowpregnantbeforemarriage.Othersofcoursedo notmarrywhenpregnantto thetuneofonebirthin every20hereinW.A.being illegitimate.
"Then,too,asageneral practitionerpointedoutto me,thesituationisfar worsethanthefiguresshow, sincecontraceptionprevents somanypregnanciesand frequentabortionscutdown whatwouldotherwisebea farhigherillegitimacyrate. The70delegatesattendingtheCongress,heldatLa Verna,theFranciscanRetreatHouseatKew,Victoria, includedfivefromNewZealand,threefromWest AustraliaandalaymissionaryfromNewGuinea.
