"Priests,nuns,brothersandparentshave donesomuchforthemthattheyexpectto goonTAKINGinsteadofGIVINGthemselves totheworkofthelayapostolote."

Thiswassaidbythe Rev.J.P.O'Brien,diocesanchaplainforthe CatholicSocialApostolate,CatholicActionand theY.C.W..inacircular lettertotheclergyinpreparationforthisSunday's sermonontheYouth Movements.

TheY.C.W.intendsto startoffthisyear'scampaign,"TheNeedsOfOur Neighbour,"withadrivefor thegreaterrealisationof howyouthcanfinditstrue placeintheapostolateof theChurch.

Inhisletter,Father O'Brienpraisedthework whichpriestshavedonefor theY.C.W.inspiteofmany othercallsontheirtime.He saidthatthishelphadbeen noticedand,commentedon asoutstandingbyvisitors fromtheEasternStateswho hadaninterestinY.C.W. affairs.

FatherO'Briensaidthat thevalueoftheY.C.W., whereitisproperlysetup andworking,cannotbe doubted,but"THENEED FORITBECOMESDAILY MOREURGENT."

Citingsomeoftheproblems,theY.C.W.chaplain saidthattheenvironment whichaffectsyoungpeople evenwhilestillatschool andparticularlywhenthey beginworkseemedtobe changingrapidlyforthe worse.

"Commonwealthstatistics," hesaid,"showthatone motherineverythreeis nowpregnantbeforemarriage.Othersofcoursedo notmarrywhenpregnantto thetuneofonebirthin every20hereinW.A.being illegitimate.

"Then,too,asageneral practitionerpointedoutto me,thesituationisfar worsethanthefiguresshow, sincecontraceptionprevents somanypregnanciesand frequentabortionscutdown whatwouldotherwisebea farhigherillegitimacyrate. Inspiteofallthat;the figuresstillshowclearlya rathershockingtrendtowardsimmoralityandforgetfulnessorignoranceof God'slaws.

"Catholicsarebyno meansimmunefromthis trend.Oneparishpriest toldmethathewassotied uphandlingurgentmarrisesthathewouldrather Iinstructedaprospective

Theseareyoungpeople livingintheworld,seeing itsproblemsandsearching forthewaysandmeansto overcomethem.

ThebrambleinthestorywasAbimelech,whohad abackgroundofloosemorals,deceitfulnessagainsthis brothers,andaboveallacruelambition.Hefinally reachedthegoal,orthethrone,-forwhichhestrove, butitbroughtruintoIsrael.Ofallthetreesitwasthe bramblealonethatcovetedthecrown.

Theparablehasamodernapplication.Itsuggests thatmenofevilambitionsveryoftenattainagoal,but intheenditprofitsthemnothing.Truegreatnessor anambitionforgoodperceivesthehollownessofcertain rewardsandawards.Thefitnessofmanforanypost canneverbejudgedbytheeagernesswithwhichhe seeksit.Worthlesspeoplewillseekafterattentions andhonourswhichthewiseandgoodwilldecline.
