Fromthishemadearemarkablerecoveryandcarriedoutthemanystrenuoustasksinpontificalceremoniesanddiocesanvisitationwhichwerehislot asAuxiliaryBishoptoHis Grace.

ThelateBishopRafferty wasborninKillaloe,County Clare,onAugust20,1912. HewaseducatedatSt.Flannan'sCollegeandstudied forthepriesthoodatSt. Kieran'sCollege,Kilkenny. Ordainedin1936,thelate AuxiliaryBishopcame+0 theArchdioceseofPerthin thesameyear.HewasappointedtothestaffofSc. Mary'sCathedralwhere threeyearslater,hewas madesecretarytoHisGrace theArchbishop,whichappointmentwasterminatedin 1947.Afterayear'sleave inIrelandthelateBishopreturnedandwasmadeAdministratorofSt.Mary'sCathedral.In1949hewasapointedChancellorofthe ArchdioceseandDeanofSt. Mary'sCathedral.

Theinstitutionofthefamilyisundergreatthreat today,theBishopsheld.Assertingthatonereason forthisisthefactthatsomemothersmusttakefulltimejobsoutsidethehome,thepastoralcalledfor increasedStatesubsidiesformothers.Iturgedyoung womenandgirlstogointothefieldofwelfarework. Italsocalledonreligiousorderstoestablishvocational schoolswhereboysandgirlscanreceivenotonly trainingfortheirfutureoccupationsbutalsoasolid ideologicalformation.
Turningtothehousingproblem,theBishopsdeploredthefactthatthegovernment'snewhousing regulationshavenotbeenputintoeffect.Theycited theexistenceof40,000unoccupiedapartmentsand saidtheveryfactofthisisarebukebothtothe ownersandtothecivilauthorities.Thepastoral suggestedinthisconnectionthatstartingwagesbe increasedsoastoencourageyoungworkerstosave moneytobuyhomes.
Onthequestionoftherelativelydepressedstateof agriculture,theBishopsurgedthegovernmentto cometotheaidofthefarmer.Allsectorsofthe economymustbeabletoprogress,theysaid,and industryshouldnotoutshineagriculturetoomuch.

HUMANITYMIGHTWELLPAUSEinthese dayswhenthehotflamesofhellbyapeculiar paradox,fanacoldwarofhate.Digging deeperthanpoliticsandeconomics,whatis thepathmodernmanistaking?Without knowingit,hehasinpractice,acceptedthe dictumofNietzsche:"Godisdead."

Atheismhasmovedfromtheintellectualplane, whereitwasinthelastcentury,totheexistential plane;fromthelevelofprovingatheism,tothelivingit;fromthenon-existenceofGod,totheexistence ofhumanity.Atheismpositsanewgod,namely,Man. ThepositionofMarxandEngels,thefoundersofCommunism,isthatmanhastransferredtoGodqualities andattributeswhichreallybelongtohim,suchas knowingallthings,possessingpowertodoallthings, unlimitedcompassion,unboundedloveandtorrential mercy.Man,theycontinue,hasdestroyedhisnatureby thistransferofattributestoGod;thusheemptied himself.Theonlywayhecaneverbehimself,isto takebackthosetitleswhichreallybelongtohim. What'sForDessert?
Shewasanengagedgirl,andshewasvery upset.Herfiancehadpostponedthewedding threetimesandshecouldnotunderstand why.Heshowedeverysignoflovingherand wantingtomarryher.Yet,whenthedate begantogetclose,heseemedtogetpanicky.
Hisreasonswereunderstandable.Hewassucha conscientiousfellowabouthisfutureresponsibility asahusbandandpotentialfatherthathehadlethis imaginationroamfarintothefuture.
Inhismind'seye,hesawhimselftenyearslater dyingalingeringdeathofcancer,leavingbehindhis wife,nomoney,andseveralyoungchildren.Hisconclusionwasthathecouldnotpossiblydothistoany girl,letalonetheonehelovedsomuch.
SeriesOf"Ifs"
Anotheryoungcouple,twoweeksbeforetheirmarriage,hadaveryseriousargument,Theywereprojectingtheirfutureandwerediscussingwhatcollege theirfirstboywouldgoto20yearshence.Hewas holdingoutforhisoldschool,andshewantedanother. Theyendedinviolentdisagreementaboutwhattodo aboutaseriesof"ifs"-iftheyhadabay,ifhedid growup,ifhewantedtogotocollege.

Theycanworkupsuchterrifyingpossibilitiesand suchinsurmountabledifficultiesintheirlifeahead thattheygetfrozenwithfear.Ortheygetsoitchy withallthescratchyanxietiesaboutmoney,orhealth, orlossofjob,ornoroomincollege,orfall-out,that lifeatthemomentisspoiledforthem.
Partofthereasonforthisfearandanxietyabout thefuturemightbetracedtothescaretechniques usedbysomuchadvertising.Eventhefund-raising drivesforworthyhealthcausesarenotblameless. Theyproclaiminendlessspotcommercialsthattwo outoffivedieofthisdisease,oiloneoutoffourdies ofsomethingelse.Let'sfacereality-oneoutofone diesofsomething-andlet'sgetonwiththejobof living.

Inhisownlifetimehe engagedinvigorouscontroversywithCardinalGasquet whomhe,inturn,regarded asadangerouslybiassed Catholichistorian.
Hewassnipedat,perhaps ineffectuallyinthelongrun, bypopularCatholicapologistslikeBellocwhotook strongexceptiontosomeof Coulton'sinterpretationsof medievalhistory.
Sincethen,ofcourse,we havehadthecalm,dispassionateandscholarlywritingsofDomDavidKnowles insuchbooksas"TheReligiousOrdersinEngland" and"TheMonasticOrderin England."HereweseeCatholichistoricalwritingat itsverybest,acceptedbyall scholarsirrespectiveofcreed and,ifhewerestillalive, nodoubtacceptedbyCoultonhimself.Bythesame tokenKnowlesfrequently quotesfromCoulton'sbooks.
Withthesebackground commentsandadmittingcertainreservations,Ihaveno hesitationindrawingattentiontothereprintofCoulton'smagnificentpanorama ofmedievalhistoryintwo volumes.
Themainreservation,of course,isthatCoultondredgingupallpossiblepoints likelytodiscreditaglamourisedviewoftheCatholic ageshaspossiblygoneto theoppositeextreme.Itmust berememberedthatan over-romanticviewofthe
MiddleAges,seeinginthem asortofrealisationofaperfectChristiansociety,isa grossdistortionoffact.Men sufferedfromtheeffectsof originalsinintheCatholic MiddleAgesasinallages, andhistoryreflectsthefact.
Coulton'swritingissuperbandcolourful.Every pageseemstothrobwith thedynamismandvitality ofthosecenturiesstretchingfromtheNormanConquestuptotheEveofthe Reformation.Hissympathies areobviouslywiththenew reformingzealotsbutoneis left,timeandagain,with theimpressionthatCoulton's vastresearcheshadbrought himsuchintimateknowledge ofMotherChurchthathe wascontinuallydisappointed withthefailureofCatholic Christendomtoliveuptoits highideals.
Therangeofsubjectmattercoveredinthesetwo volumesisimpressiveand fascinating.Nearlynine hundredpagestestifyto Coulton'sexhaustivecoverageofallaspectsofmedieval life.Whateverdisagreementsandreservationsone mightentertainfromtime totime,themineisfartoo richandrewardingnotto beexploitedbythehistory student.Onecansafelyrepeatthequotetakenfrom theTimes'reviewofthefirst edition:"Ahighlyremarkablevolume.Neitherthe professedstudentnorthe generalreaderwilleasily discoveramoreagreeable introductiontothesocial lifeofmedievalEngland thanishereofferedtothem withalltheresourcesofsincerityandlearning."
