Shewastrulyaninspirationtohercommunity,beingendowedbyGodwith raretalents,abrightdispositionandawonderful senseofhumour.

Shewassparedtoenjoy onlytenyearsofaholyand virtuouslifeandfilledfor atermtheresponsibleoffice ofSub-Prioress.

LiketheLittleFlowerof Lisieux.shemadegigantic stepsalongthepathof spiritualperfectionforshe trodthepathof"Spiritual Infancy,thesecretofthe sanctityofSt.Therese.Sistercould,-findconsolation, joyandlltileasureineventhe simplestthings-one,could evensaythatherlife-long *lotto, indeedher *lotto,was."Isn'tthat lovely!"Sheuseditevenon herdeathbedandinthe mostacutepainwasheard toexclaim:"HowgoodGod hasalwaysbeentome!"

ForsometimeSister's healthhadbeencausing anxiety,butsheherself nevercomplained.Inspite ofunremittingmedicalattentionandskilfulnursing onthepartoftheSistersof St.JohnofGodHospital, itwasimpossibletosaveher younglife.Godobviously wantedhergeneroussoul andshediedabeautifuland edifyingdeath.

SuccessfulandallasNorldRefugeeYearmayhave been,therecouldbehardlyaworseerrorthanto assumethatitsolvedtherefugeeormigrationproblem. Thishomelessnessoftherefugeeisachapterinthe historyofmechanisationandsecularisationofhuman life;itsoriginisinman'sperversionofGod'sorderand defianceofGod'swayoflifeforhim;itsgrowthmaybe retardedonlybyawiderrecognitionofGod'sorderand man'smoralresponsibilitytowardsGodand,consequently,towardsGod'screatures.Thus,isitthatthe conditionoftherefugeeprovidesforallanimpressive lesson.

Elevenyearsago,whenissuingthefirstStatementon Migration,theBishopsreferredtotheGovernment's migrationprogrammeforAustraliaaspresentinga challengetopatriotism,charityandcatholicity,with,as ojectives,thefutureofourcountry,theplightofthe world'shomelesspeoplesandtheneedsandaspirations ofourkinsfolkabroad.Itmay,intheevent,beagreed thatthechallengehasbeenwellmet.Witnessonlythe nationalresultsofRefugeeYearwithfinancialcontributionfromthepublic,ofwhomCatholicsformeda worthypart,ofsome600,000;thecontributionsof ChurchandVoluntaryOrganisationsamountingto £.100,000ofwhichsome£30,000wastheCatholic portion;theassistanceoftheGovernmentbymoneyof 50.000tothenationalappealand,indirectlyandin kind,considerablymore.togetherwiththeadmission of3.000additionalrefugeesand,ratherespecially,500 handicappedfamilies.

Buthavingprovidedsuchstatisticalevidenceof interestandpracticalsympathy,letusnotforgetfora momentthatwithinourcountrywithits1,600,000 post-warimmigrants.butespeciallyabroad,thereare manymembersofthehumanfamilytowhombythe dictatesofcharityandconscienceweshouldextend help,commensuratewithourpositionandresources.

ThisSunday,inparticular,withitsspecialcommemoration,letusprayforallimmigrantsthattheymaybecomfortedandaidedintheirspiritual,economic andsocialneeds.Letusthinkuponthedistress, poverty,injusticeandoppression,mercifullysparedto us,whichasacrushingweight,bearsupsomanyofour fellowhumanbeings,extinguishingwithinthemalmost allhopeandDivineFaithitself.Beingmindfulofall this,letusbegenerousinaidingthemwhereverandin whateverwaypossible.Tothoseinparticularwho havesettledamongstus,andotherswhowilljointhem, letusextendawarmwelcomeandreadyassistance. Letusgiveofourbest,beingmindfulthatwhatisdone worthilyinmigration'scauseisastrengtheningofthe bondsthatarebetweenmen,drawingthemcloserina brotherhoodthatleadstothePeace,desiredofallmen.

Therearesomethingsweoutgrowinmanhood,but oneofthemisnotvirtue,Thisworldisonlyanursery, orbetter,thecradleinwhichsouls,yetinswaddling bands,arerockedintoimmortality.Ifthenurserysong theyhearisthatofvirtue,thechancesarethatateighty theywillbevirtuousstill.ToysandgunsIndianhats andstamps,areallbrushedwayinto,thecornerwhen onebecomesaman;buttheheartthathasbeenformed rightisnotathingoutsidetheheart,butinit.Asone carriesthephysicalequipmentofbirththroughlife,so onecarriesthespiritualequipmentonereceivesonthe othersideofeight.Whatisfedonthespoontothe childiswhathewilleatfromtableasaman.Like Browning'swisethrush,thechildwhohasbeenreared inthewaysofGod:

Priests?Nuns?Social Workers?Parents?The groupwasmadeupofnone ofthese.Theywere150 CatholicsgirlsfromAustralie'ssecondaryschools.

Theycamefromevery possiblebackground,ranged inagefrom12to17years, andvariedfromquietcountrygirlstocoiffuredcity dwellers,butthesegirls werelinkedbymembership inoneoftheChurch'slatest organisations,astudent. managedleadershipmovement,knownastheYoung CatholicStudents.

ArepresentativeAustralianConferenceof,thegirls' sectionofthisbodywasheld fromanuary21to27atMelbourne'sMandevilleHall, hostedbytheLoretoSisters there.

Similarmeetingsforboys andgirlswereheldinJanuaryatToowoomba,Adelaide, andLaunceston,bringingtogethersome1.000student leadersfromeveryAustralianState.

Representativeofthe MandevilleHallConference wasMarieMcLoughlin,of WoodvillePark,SouthAustralia.

Petiteandquiet,Marie,at 14,hasjustpassedher Intermediateandalready hasoneyearbehindheras agroupleaderatherown school.Shehadcometo Mandeville,'asshesaid,"to findoutmoreabouteverythingfromrunningameetingtoChristianattitudeson casualdances."

TheY.C.S.Movementwas setupbytheAustralian Bishopsin1942.TheGodless atmospheregrowinginthe worldwaswearingdown Christiantradition.IfCatholicEducationwastoturn outyoungpeoplewhose faithwassomethingmore thanself-centred,defensive andremotefromlife,a methodofformationwas neededthatwouldletstudentsdiscoverforthemselveseverydetailofafull ChristianLife.

Afterinitialexperiments, amovementwasevolved thatwouldbridgethegap betweenCatholictheoryand life.AtMandevilleHallthe

Certified

techniqueandspiritofthe movementcouldbeseenat work.

Groupsofsevenoreight werescatteredaroundthe grounds,discussingthe sociallifeofAustraliangirls atschool,itsproblems,its responsibilities.Membersof onegroupcamefromJunee, Melbourne,Adelaideand Perth.

Followingthekeyquestionspreparedbyacommitteeofapriestandfull-time workers,the'girlspooled theirownobservationsof actualsituations:Whatrecreationsdidgirlsattendin theirarea?Howoften?With whom?Atwhatage?What wastheattitudeofparents tothesethings?

Theresultsweresometimessurprising,sometimes expected,butgraduallythe situationofstudentsocial lifewasclarified.Films,TV, parties,dancesstoodatthe top,workingdowntohousework,familyoutings,and just,plaindoingnothingfor lackofcompanions.

Independence

Insteadofstartingfiom anidealofferedbyateacher orpriest,thegirlswere trainingthemselvestodevelopasrealists,bydiscoveringforthemselves, clarifyingtherealitiesof theircontemporarylife. Theyknewbookishorwishfulthinkingwouldcommand littlerespectandworkno resultsamongtoday'sadolescents.

Withthispictureoflifein focusasfarastheycould seeit,themembersofthe groupturnedtotheeffects ofthesethings.Howdid familylifefare?Where werefamilyresponsibilities beingneglected?Wheredid studyfitintothepresent pattern?Whateffectswere noticeableintheyoungpersonineachcase?

Wherevertherewastoo muchofagoodthing,ortoo little,theproblemstarted toshow.

Thisrealisationoftheir ownworldgavethegroup onesideofthescales.To weighitanidealwasnecessary,andtheidealthey soughtwasacomplete ChristianideaLThese15 and16-year-oldssetthemselvestodiscoveringasfar astheycouldthemindof ChristforAustralian youngersets.1961.

Eventoanadultobserver thewaythismethodshowed therealismofGod'splans wassurprising.Insteadof discussingabstractvirtues, theseyoungsterswerediscussingtheChristianlifein termsofpracticaldetail.It wasaheldconferenceto interpretandachievevictory inthisonesectorofGod's generalstrategy.

Thetwotasksofobserving andjudgingledupnaturallytothethird-action.

"Ayoungpersonwillgive ase.enttoanynumberof truths,butthesewillnever becomepartofhimuntil theyareactedon,untilthey areshared.AfullyChristienspiritneedsfullyChristianaction."

TheMandeville 11a1 Croupdecidedtostepup contactbetweenschoolcorn-

panionsduringleisuretime. Varioussuccessfulexperimentswererecommended forimitation.

ButthebulkoftheY.C.S. actionisdirectedtopersonal educationthroughmembershipofitsgr,mps.Agroup judgesitssuccessbyits continuingexpansion. Undertheguidanceof chaplainsandReligiousassistantsandorganisedona schoolbasis(someexperimentsforaparishorganisationshowmoredifficulties titanadvantagesatthepresenttime)theLovementis essentiallyoutgeing.

Leader'sWork

Eachleaderinaschoolis expectedtoformhisown groupandprovideforothers theopportunitieshehasreceivedhimself.Fortnightly meetingsconsistofagroup discussiononapplyinga Gospelpassagetostudent life,observationandreflectionondailyproblemsand sometimesaparticularactivityofservice.Missions, dramatics,hobbies,fashions werecommontopicsfor theseactivities. WhatdoesaY.C.S.group concernitselfwith?The onlyanswerseemstobethe wholeofastudent'slife. Whatteacherevencouldbe expectedtoincludeinany classsucharangeoftopics asthespiritoffriendship inaparish.theamountof timespentathome,neglectedteenagers,practicaljudgmentsofTVprogrammes, attitudestoreligiousinstruction,holidayjobs, school-leavers'needs,gettingonwiththefamily, classspirit,partiesandthe roleofreading.Evenifa teachercouldtacklethe subjectshewouldbehard puttoappreciatethepressuresandtheattitudesthat thesegroupsknewfrom theirownexperience.

Yearbyyear,newsectors oflifecomeupforstudy, newresponsibilitiesare foundinthefaceofchangingcustomcausedbycommercialorsocialpressures.

Astudentmovementfaces constantdifficulty.Thereis aconstant,changesofpersonnel.Theagegroupisone ofinstability.Socialpressuresdiscourageyoung peoplefromacceptingany responsibility.Someteachers andpriestsfinditdifficult tounderstandthetechnique thatgivestheinitiativeto thestudentsthemselves,and somemaynotappreciatethe problemsandpressuresthat callforamovementlikethe YoungCatholicStudents.

Tohelpovercomethese difficulties,EpiscopalChairmanofY.C.S.,HisLordship MostReverendJ.W.Gleeson,ofAdelaide,representingtheAustralianBishops' CommitteeonCatholicAction,recentlyappointedan AssistantNationalChaplain, FatherP.J.Hynes,ofAdelaide.Thethirdmemberof thesmallheadquartersteam

CBE'PROBLEMofremainingaCatholicatsea(or ofbecomingone)issomethingakintothe laboriousascentofMt.Everest.Somearelost foreverintheprocess,andmanyothersturn backindiscouragment.Astatisticgivenin1957 statedthat97outofeveryhundredCatholicseafarers onAustralianshipshadturnedbackfromtheascentof theFaith,andlessthananaverageofoneconversonper yearwasonrecord.

Safemountaineeringrequiresthateveryclimber shouldbeprovidedwithamap;nowamapforthe CatholicseafarerisCatholicliterature.Ifthereshall beonlyfivemapsamongonehundredclimbers,the otherninety-fivemaypossiblyperishinthefirststorm. SoalsoifthereisCatholicliteratureonlysufficientfor fivepercentoftheseafarers(asisthecaseatpresent), thelargemajoritymaydeviateradicallyfromtheFaith inthefirstcrisisorchallenge.

TheascentofMt.Everestmustbealarminglydifficult eveninthebestoftimes,butsomuchmoreprecarious wouldbecometheascentifadiobolicalhoaxerharassed theclimberswithillusoryweatherreports.

Theretentionof,orconversiontotheFaith,ofa seafarerisalsoatrialatanytime,butittakesonthe appearanceofsheerimpossibilitywhencleveratheists andtrainedMarxistsmaintainasteadyattackupon religionandtheChurch.

Mostpeoplehaveshowntheutmostinterestinthe momentousfeatofclimbingEverest-andhadthese citizensbeenabletoassisttheclimbersinanywayin theeventofblizzardsandsnowdrifts,itiscertainthey wouldhavebeengladtodoso.

Yeteverydayamorestupendousandsignificant struggleisactedoutontheshipsaroundAustraliathestrugglenotmerelytopreservelivesbutsouls.

TheMaritimeUnionsaretheveryspearheadofcommunisminAustralia;theircommunistnumbersare small,buttheirorganisationisexcellent;theyhave goodspeakers,alocalpressandasupplyoffinely producedforeignpictorialmagazines.

TheCatholicswhoopposethemarefew,poorlyorganisedandinexperiencedinpropagatingtheFaith,but theyareinthefieldandmustbehelpedortheyare certaintobedefeated.Theirfewnesscanbeoffsetby anabundanceofCatholicliteraturesuppliedbyCatholicsonshore.

Asanexampleoftheefficacyofliterature:AFourth EngineerjoinedashiponwhichaRosaryGroupwas established.Oneofthegroupcasuallyenquiredwhether hewasaCatholic,buthewasnotandevidentlydid notcaretoembarkonadiscussionofthesubject.

Hereisanotherinstancqofthegoodwhichhasbeen achieved:AyoungCatholichadpreviouslybeenwon awayfromtheChurch.Hestartedreadingliterature whichhadbeenleftlyinginthemessroom,as.aresult ofwhichhebegantoattendtheRosaryonboard.

Hisyoungwifewasn'taCatholicandhatedthe Church-butshebegantonoticeachangeintheirhome life.Theydidn'tfightsomuchnow.Soherhusbandtold aboutthereligiononboardandgavehersomeofthe thingstoread.Sixmonthslaterthatgirlwenttoa priestforadiscussionasregardsenteringtheFaith, andevenbeforebeginninginstructionsshesucceeded inpersuadingtwolapsedCatholicstoaccompanyherto MassatEaster.

THEBIGCHANGE,however,wasintheclassification ofMassesandthefeaststheycelebrate.Adefinitenew andstrongemphasiswasplacedonthetemporalcycle (theMassesoftheparticularseason)overthesanctoral cycle(theMassesofthefeastdaysofthesaints).

WELCOME CHANGE

AFURTHERANDMUCH-NEEDEDCHANGEwasthe limitationplacedontheclassofdaysonwhichRequiem orso-called"BlackMasses"arepermitted.Thislatterchangeismostwelcomesinceitwillmeanthatourpeople willhaveanopportunitytobeexposed tothebeautifulliturgyoftheChurch constantlythroughtheyearinsteadofbeingsubjected toacontinualrepetitionoftheRequiemMass.After all.theMassisthesameinbenefits,nomatterwhich Massisoffered,sowhynothaveMassesforthedead offeredintheliturgyoftheparticularday?

NowthatweareintheseasonofLent,wenote that,whereasheretoforetherewasconsiderableoption, permittingthepriest-celebranttooffertheMassofthe saint'sdayortheMassoftheLentenferialdays.now theseasonalMassofLenttakesprecedenceinmost instances.

Thisagoodthing.TheLentenMassesarerichin beautifulandmeaningfulpassagesfromtheOldand NewTestamentsthatwedefinitelyneedtoknowmore about.ThewholeideaofLentismademorevividfor usasweseeitsplaceasanecessarypreparationforthe importanteventsofHolyWeekandthegloryofthe Resurrection.

Somemaythinkthatthisconstitutesadowngrading ofthesaintswhenwearemoreconcernedwiththe observanceoftheseasonratherthanwiththesaint's dayitself.Thisisnottrue.Certainlytheholysaints themselveswouldhavebeenthefirsttoacknowledge thatitisbettertolivewiththeChurchthroughthe LiturgicalYear.

THISSHIFTINGOFEMPHASISisanotherinstanceof theincreasingpastoralconcernoftheChurchforthe membersoftheflock.More,itisan PASTORALindicationofstillfurtherchangesthat mightbeanticipated.Allofthechanges CONCERNthathavebeenaccomplishedinrecent yearssincetheappearancein1947of themonumental"MediatorDei"havehadastheir primarypurposethebenficialeffectsthesechanges couldcontributetothefaithful.

Thisversionisthemost delicatepeformanceof"The Trout"Ihaveheard.HephzibahMenuhinmakesthe pianomurmursothatthe violin,violaandcelloare quiteclear.Infact,although Ihaveheardagreatnumberofrecordingsofthisdelectablework,onthisdisc Iheardsomeofthestring detailforthefirsttime.I thinkIcanbestconveythe generalatmosphereofthe performancebycomparing ittotheoverflowingnervous energyofaracehorse.

Certainlyitisamongthe bestthree,theothersbeing ViennaOctetwithCurzon (Decca)andFineArtswith Babin(Concert-Disc).It wouldbemyownchoiceof thethree.

Beethoven'sSeptetwasso popularthathetookaperversedisliketoit.Itis scoredforviolin,viola,cello, double-bass,clarinet,bassoonandhorn,atrulydelectablecombination.Itwas sopopularthatSchubert wascommissionedtowrite acopy,whichhedid,adding asecondviolin,HisOctet becomeevenmorepopular thantheSeptetand,surprisingly,isthegreaterworkof thetwo. Schubertianswhohavenot heardBeethoven'sSeptet willbeamazedtohearso manyofthecharacteristic MOWslallislislatifteastasisza

Schuberttoucheswerefirst inventedbyBeethoven24 yearsearlier.Theperformanceisexcellentanditis theonlyoneavailable.Beethovenloversshouldnotbe deterredbyBeethoven's opinionofthework-Haydn thoughtveryhighlyofit, andsodoesanybodywho's heardit.Averydelightful disc.

Lightningneverstrikes twiceinthesameplace. "BelafonteatCarnegie Hall,"issuedlastyear,was amiraculousflukeofrecordingtakenfromalive concert.Itwasfullofatmosphereandpersonality.This attemptatasequelremains merelyagoodperformance oflightmusic.

Ontheserecords,Belafonteisjoinedbyotherartists,noneofwhichisquite inhisclass,Odetta,the ChadMitchellTrio,the BelafonteFolkSingersand agirlfromJohannesburg, Makeba,whohasmarksof greatness.Herduetwith Belafonte,"JustOneMore Dance,"isthebestthingof thealbum.

IhavenodoubtthatthousandsofBelafontefanswill behappywiththisissue,but itisnotlikelytowinhim anynewonesas''Belafonte atCarnegieHall"undoubtedlydid.

INTERPRETATIONOFGENESIS

Q.:IquotedyourexplanationtosomeCatholic friends,whosaidIcouldnothaverightlyunderstoodyou.

R.:Theyprobablyhadnotdevotedanyserious attentiontothesubjectfromthedaytheyleft school.TheCatechismsayssimplythatmanisone ofGod'screaturescomposedofabodyandasoul, thesoulbeingmadeinGod'simageandlikeness. Anditleavesthingsatthat.

Teacherscouldnotbeexpectedtoputbefore schoolchildrendeepproblemsofscripturalinterpretationassetforthbyspecialists.Ifaparticularly interestedandintelligentchildweretoaskwhether Goddirectlycreatedboththebodiesandthesouls ofourfirstparents,theteacherwouldhavetosay thatHecertainlycreatedtheirsoulsdirectly,but thatHeneednothavecreatedtheirbodiesdirectly.

Itispossiblethat,inGod'sprovidence,animals developedmoreandmoreperfectformsuntiltheir bodieswerefitforGodtochoosetwoofthemtobe givenhumansoulsandbecomethefirstparentsof thehumanrace.Thatmighthavehappened, althoughnooneknowsforcertainwhetheritreally didhappen.

REACTIONSAGAINSTEVOLUTION

Q.:Allthroughourschooldaysweweretaughtto disbelievethetheoryofevolution.

R.:Untilcomparativelyrecentlythetendencyof thosewhobelievedinGodwastorejectaltogether thetheoryofman'sevolutionbecauserationalists andmaterialistsweremisusingitasanargument againstbeliefinGod.ButthereisnothingnecessarilyopposedtoCatholicFaithinthetheoryof evolutionasregardsthedevelopmentofthehuman body. TheaccountofcreationinGenesisisareligious dramastandingforcertainhistoricalrealities,even thoughnotallitsdetailsneedbegivenastrictly literalinterpretation.Thedefinitefactsarethat Godis'theCreatorofthiswholeuniverse;thatin averyspecialwayHemademaninHisownlikenessbyvirtueofaspiritualandimmortalsoul; thatHemadewomanwiththesamehumannature asman;thatHeintendednothingbuthappiness formankind;andthatevenwhentherightwas forfeitedbyourfirstparentsthroughtheirsinful rebellionagainstHimattheinstigationofthedevil, HeatoncepromisedafutureRedeemer.

Thosearetheessentialthings.Whetherthe descriptivedetailsusedinconveyingthesetruths touswereintendedasliterallytrueormerelyas literaryformsforthepurposesofthenarrativeis ofsecondaryimportance;andcertainlytheaccount ofourfirstparentsdoesnotexcludethepossibility oftheevolutionoftheirbodiesfromlowertypes ofanimallife.Whetherthatreallyhappenedor notisstill,asPopePiusXIIsaidin1950,anopen question.

NatureOfTheChurch

R.:ThetrueChurchisthatvisiblereligioussocietyin thisworldwhichChristfoundedupontheApostles,and whichHecommissionedtoteachallnationsinHisname andwithHisauthority,promisingtobewithitalldays eventilltheendoftime.

Naturally,whilethe Apostlesandtheirsuccessorsconstitutedtheteachingauthorityinthe Church,thoseconverted bytheirteachingandreceivedintotheChurch weretobeequallymembersoftheChurchwith them.

IntheOldLaw,Israel constitutedtheonechosen peopleofGod,livingunder theruleofGod.IntheNew Testament,theChurch foundedbyChristisdescribedasthe"NewIsrael," Israelofoldbeingthetype ofit,saveforthefactthat membersofthe"NewIsrael"aretobedrawn,not fromoneparticularnation, butfromallnations.

Butallmembersareto beonereligiously,sothat theChristianChurchwillbe onevisibleinstitution,catholicinthesenseofwelcomingpeopleofallnations withinitsunity,apostolicas derivingcontinuously throughtheagesfromthe Apostles,andexercisingthe powersgivenitbyChristto teach,ruleandsanctifyall whobelongtoit. TosayallthatistoindicatetheCatholicChurch, andtheCatholicChurch only,asallnormallyrecognisetheexpressionwhether ornottheyhaveattained tofaithintheCatholicreligion.

CHURCHASOURGUIDE

Q.:YousaythattheBible aloneisnotasufficient guide;butwhatinformationhastheRomanCatholicChurchthatisnotin theBible?

R.:AlthoughtheCatholic Churchhasitsheadquarters inRome-ithasgottohave themsomewhere-itstillremainssimplytheCatholic Churchexistingasoneand thesameChurchthroughout theworld,whereveritmay be. Butnowforyourquestion. ThebasisoftheChristian religionistheApostolictradition.TheChurchexisted b,forealineoftheNew Testamentwaswritten,and theApostlestaughtbefore theywroteanything,and morethantheywrote;and thefirstChristiansaswe aretoldinthe"Acts,"perseveredinthedoctrinesofthe Apostles.Allthatthe Apostlesreceivedfrom Christorlaterfromthe HolySpiritwastobetransmittedintheChurch.

Partofthistraditional teachingwaswrittenindifferentlittlehooks,thefirst ofthemabout20yearsafter thedeathofChrist,the othersatintervalsspread

overnearlyafurther70 years.Sothefullnessof Christiantraditionisolder thantheNewTestamentand containedmorethanthe NewTestament.

NowitistheChurch, undertheguidanceofthe HolySpirit,whoinspired thewritingofthelittle books,whichistheliving embodimentofthefull ChristianTradition.Itis theChurchwhichpreserves thedepositofFaithandis authorisedtotellusofits contents.

ItistheChurchwhich gatheredtogetherthe27 booksmakingtheNew Testament.Shedidnot finallydecideonthisuntil afternearlythreecenturies, andthereisnoinformation intheNewTestamenttosay thatitshouldconsistofpreciselythese27books.

Again,theChurchbyher teachingmakesclearmuch thatisonlyimplicitlyand obscurelyintheNewTestament,as,forexample,that therearesevenChristian Sacraments,orthatthe officialministryofthe Churchshouldconsistof bishops,priestsanddeacons.

Usingthepowerstoteach, ruleandsanctify,givenher byChristwhenHesaid: "Whateveryoubindon earthisboundalsoin heaven"(Matt.18:18),she alsogivesusmuchinformationastohowliturgical worshipshouldbefulfilled, howtheSacramentsshould beadministered,howand whenthefastingprescribed byOurLordshouldbeobserved.

FromtheNewTestament welearnthatChristiansare notobligedtoobserveSaturday;butthereisnothing intheNewTestamentabout anyobligationtoobserve Sunday.

SotheChurch,livingand developing,andunderthe constantguidanceofthe HolySpirit,who,Christsaid toher,"willguideyouinto alltruth"(Jn.16:13),grows intoaneverdeeperunderstandingoftheChristian tradition,whetherwritten orunwritten,andagebyage teacheshermemberswhat theymustbelieve,anddo accordingtothemorallaw, asChristians. TheBibleistheWordof Codasfarasitgoes,though itdoesnotcontainall;and itiscertainlynotthelast wordonallreligiousquestions.

Ican'tsparemorethan this,butIhavesaidenough toshowthattheCatholic Church,inherteachingsand laws,isourauthenticguide toChristiantradition,%vrittenorunwritten.

Thepaidannouncements saidthatGeneralissimoRafaelLeonidasTrujilloMolinahadappropriatedfour million.dollarsforaprojecteduniversitytobeconductedbytheJesuitsinHiguey, and51,500,000forthecompletionofthenationalMarianshrineatHiguey.

Theadvertisementssaid thattheGeneralissimorevealedthe$5,500,000-appropriationataceremonyon January14inHiguey.It alsogaveatranslationof whatappearedtobeanaddressbyBishopJuanFelix PepenofHigueyheaping praiseonGeneralissimo Trujillo.

LastOctober,Bishop Pepenissuedaspecialpastoralpointingtothevital unityofCatholicswiththeir bishopsandamongthemselves,andcondemning"the terribleculpabilityofthose whoworkagainsttheunity oftheChurch."Observers,recallingtherancor againsttheChurchinthe immediatepast,sawdouble meaningsinmuchofBishop Pepen'sJanuary14speech; eveninthetranslation.The BishopreferredtoGen. GeneralissimoTrujillorepliedthenextdayinalettersignedbyhimselfand PresidentJoaquinBelaguer. Theypledgedtomaintain religiouseducation,andto liftthebarriersagainstthe immigrationofpriestsand religious.

AnationwideassociationofparentshasaccusedtheMexicangovernmentofsupporting asmearcampaignagainstprivateschoolsin ordertonationalisethem.

TheNationalUnionof Parentsappealedinitsopen lettertoMexicanPresident AdolfoLopezMateosfor restorationoftherightof parentstoeducatetheir children.UnderArticle3 oftheMexicanConstitutioneducationisaState monopoly. Thearrival,onOctober 1stoflastyear,oftwenty laymissionhelpersinthe DioceseofLaghouatbrought thetotalnumberoflaymen andwomenwhoaredevotedtomissionarywork intheSaharato107.

UptoJune1st,there were87suchhelpersinthe LaghouatDiocese,all,with theexceptionoffour,from France.ThefourexceptionsarefromAlgeria. Thesemenandwomenwere engagedinmanyvarieties ofmissionarywork:20 menwereteachersinprimaryschools;32women wereteachers,directorsof homeeconomicsschools andnurses;9mentaughtin industrialschools,3werein administrativework;8were parochialassistants,catechists,scoutleadersetc. and15workedinvarious professions,withoutpay, outsidethemissionterritory.

Itisonlyadozenyear: agothattheappealforlay helpersinthismissionwas launched.Todayaboutfifteenhelpersareintheir tenthyearofmissionservice.Workingtogetherin closecollaborationwiththe WhiteFathersandthe WhiteSistersinthemissionaryeffortthesehelpers increasethepossibilitiesof contactsandfriendshipsin themidstoftheMuslim population.

Thearrival,onOctober 1stoflastyear,oftwenty laymissionhelpersinthe DioceseofLaghouatbrought thetotalnumberoflaymen andwomenwhoaredevotedtomissionarywork intheSaharato107.

UptoJune1st,there were87suchhelpersinthe LaghouatDiocese,all,with theexceptionoffour,from France.ThefourexceptionsarefromAlgeria. Thesemenandwomenwere engagedinmanyvarieties ofmissionarywork:20 menwereteachersinprimaryschools;32women wereteachers,directorsof homeeconomicsschools andnurses;9mentaughtin industrialschools,3werein administrativework;8were parochialassistants,catechists,scoutleadersetc. and15workedinvarious professions,withoutpay, outsidethemissionterritory.

Itisonlyadozenyears agothattheappealforlay helpersinthismissionwas launched.Todayaboutfifteenhelpersareintheir tenthyearofmissionservice.Workingtogetherin closecollaborationwiththe WhiteFathersandthe WhiteSistersinthemissionaryeffortthesehelpers increasethepossibilitiesof contactsandfriendshipsin themidstoftheMuslim population.
