BeforethatRichardCardinal offereda Prayer"thatwemayknow ourpersonalresponsibilities"asmen,asArriericans,ascitizensofthe world,aschildrenofGod. TheArchbishopofBoston alsoaskedGodtogive PresidentKennedy,his cabinet,theCongressand thecourts-"andallofus" -thegrace"toperform withfullpersonalresponsi-

Twowomenhadtobeforciblyrestrainedby theirfamiliesfrommakinganattempttoenterthe burningchurchtosavetheBlessedSacrament. Theyweredraggedtosafetyminutesbeforethe superheatedairinsidethebuildingexplodedand pushedoutthewholesideofthebuildingcausing ittocollapse.

Withinonehourofnewsbeingreceivedthat Dwellingupwasindanger,arrangementswere madetoturnSt.Joseph'sSchool,Pinjarra,intoa receivingcentreforevacuees.Cots,pramsand mattresseswererushedtotheschoolforthewomen andchildrnwhowereevacuatedbeforethefire struck.Classroomsbecamenurseriesandbabies sleptastheirmotherssilentlyawaitednewsfrom thehills15milesawaywhichwerethenasheetof flame.

Nextdaytheschoollookedlikeabattlefieldfirstaidpost.Smoke-blindedfirefighterswereledinand beddeddownonmattressesonthefloor.Some weresoexhaustedthattheyhadtobespoonfed fromtinsofbabyfoods.Womenusedoveratonof iceinmakingcooldrinksandicepacksforthe victims.Ambulancesranashuttleservicetothe hospitalwiththemoreseriouscases.

TheAnglicanandMethodistMinistersandtheir congregationshelpedtheCatholicsinthispressing urgency.Thepromptcarefromthevoluntary workersandthemedicalteamssavedmanyfrom seriousshockandcollapse.

Thespontaneouscharityandgenerosityofso manyhasmadeuptousforourloss,manyvictims said.

TheDwellingupchurchwasinsuredfor£1,800. "Thiswillgiveusastart,"saidFatherHarry Brennan,narishnriest."butitwillnotbenearly enough,especiallyasthosewhowouldhavehelped ushavelosteverythingtheyowned."

Theconcertopenedwith apositivelyhtilliantperformanceof'TheMarrLg2 ofFigaro'overture,vim apedestrian'SerenataNotturns'whichlackedincision andthengavetheverybeet thingoftheseries,thepiano conce_to,K482,byMozart.

Tochoosethisworkwas astrokeofgenius.Girdlestone,theauthorityonthe Mersrtpianoconcertos, calleditthemo-tqueenly oftheseries,beingdigitliedandaffableatthesame time;thiscouldalsobean aptdescriptionofthesoloist,Nikolayeka,whoisa greatpersonalityaswellas agreatpianist.Butitis theaptnessoftheconcerto totheout-of-dooratmosphereoftheFestivalwhich issostriking,althoughin theeventtheweatherdrove usindoors.Thesubstitutionofclarinetsforoboes, theprominenceofthewoodwinds,thesingingcharacter ofthepiano,allevokethe sensuousqualitiesofCosi FanTuttiandremindus ofthatencha-tedgardenby theseashorenearNaples whereitisforeverasummerevening.
