Therecentincreaseininterestrateshasmeantan addedburdenforyoungcouplesinW.A.whohavetaken loanstobuytheirownhouses.TheSouthAustralianGovernmenthashadthewisdomtopreventthis riseinratesbeingpassedontohousingloansand byitsactionhasearnedthegratitudeofmanyyoung coupleginthatState.Ithasalsoearnedtheadmirationofallthosewhorealisethemanyandfarreaching effectsofwidespreadhomeownershiponallaspectsof sociallife.
Surely,whensomanyforcestendtowarddisruptionanddisorder,governmentbodiesshouldmake theirparamountthoughtthefosteringofthosebasic factorswhichtendtowardsthecementingandstrengtheningofsocialstructures.
Aman'sfreedomisstuntedandrestrictedifhedoes notownthingswhichhecanusefreely.Thisisa basicargumentforprivateownershipingeneral,but amoreobviousargumentforprivateownershipin theformofwidespreadhomeownershiparisesfrom thepracticalconsequencesthatnormallyflowfrom thefactofamanowninghisownhouseandland.
Asamatteroffactthemanwhobuyshisownblock oflandquitefrequentlydoessomeofthebuilding himself.Frequentlyheenlistshisfriendstohelp him.Whenheneedsaladderhegoestothepeople inthehousenearby.Lateriftheareaisanewone, hewill,becalledontolendahammerorgiveadvice toanotherincomingself-helpbuilder. "Wearereviewingeverythingconcerningmissions," hesaid.Thisstatement,inconjunctionwithothers, seemstoimplythatthecurrentpressureagainst Christianitywillbeincreased.
WhenIaskedwhetheranannouncedrevisionof regulationsaboutpassportsandimmigrationwould affectthestatusofmissionaries,theministerapparentlypreferrednottoreply.
Maj.Gen.TalaatFaridisamemberoftheSupreme CounciloftheArmedForces,whichtookoverthe governmentoftheSudaninNovember,1958.Headed byGen.IbrahimAbboud,whobecamePrimeMinister, thiscouncilofsevengeneralssuspendedthetransitionalconstitutionanddissolvedtheelectedParliament.

WhentheGermanBishops announcedtheirMisereor ("Ihavecompassion")plan in1958anAfricanbishop wrote,"Neverbeforehas movehopefulandpromising new,comefromGermany, whichhasbroughtsomuch miseryintheworld."\
Thefirstcampaign,in Lentof1958,farexceeded theBishops'hopes.Itnettedmerethan£4,000,000. Newsofitssuccessbrought anavalancheofi'aquests forfundsfromunderdevelopedareasthroughoutthe world. Tosiftoutthese requeststheBishopssetup aspecialcommissionunder thepresidencyofJoseph CardinalFrings,Archbishop ofCologne.
Bytheendof1959requestsformorethan£12,000.000-aboutthreetimes thefundsattheBishops' disposalhadarrived.The episcopalcommitteesought advicefromexpertsinthe manyaspectsofinternationalaidtohelpthemdecide wherehelpwasmostneeded.
Thebasicphilosophyof theBishops'PointFour Planistounderwritelongrangeprojectsthatwill fostercommunitydevelopmentandagriculturalproduction.Ephasisisplaced onwaysofdistributingthe benefitsofsuchhigherproductionamongentirecommunitiesratherthanfavouredindividuals. Public healthisoneofthemajor aims.
ButtheBishopshavealso sentlargesumstodisaster areasandfortheimmediate reliefofrefugees.

Thecentre'sdirectortold me,"Manyofthemale readytogiveupgoodjobs withhighsalariesasengineers,schooldirectorsor well-situatedfarmers,for instance,tohelpthepeople ofpoorcountries.Wehave

Candidatesareputtoa severetestbeforetheyare accepted. Manyare screenedout.Theymust bebetweentheagesof25 and35.Marriedpeopleare welcomebuttheymustbe readytoleaveGermanyfor workinunderdeveloped countries.
Duringtheir12-month candidacytheygetasixmonthcourseinpolitical, economic,culturalandreligiousconditionsinunderdevelopedcountries,and intensiveinstructiononthe aimsofdevelopmentaid. Basicreligioustrainingis notneglected. Thesecondstepisathree-month stayinEnglandorFrance tolearnaforeignlanguage. Theyspendthefinalthree monthsoftheirpreparation: inaspecialtrainingcentre inthecountryinwhich theywillwork.
"Ourvolunteersareno missionaries,"thedirector oftheColognecentretold us."Theirtaskistoshow underdevelopedcountriesa wayoutoftheirmisery. throughhumanhelp.Itis onlyasanaccompaniment tothisthatourvolunteer:; showthesepeoplewhata Christianlifemeans,bygivinganexampleofChristiancharityandofthe Church'suniversality."

GuatemalaCity:MosttradeunionmovementsinLatinAmericaaregovernmentcontrolled,communistorsusceptibleto outsideinfluence,YoungChristianWorkers meetingheresaid.
The80delegatestothemeeting,whocamefrom CentralAmerica,MexicoandtheCaribbean,saidin astatementthatunions"inthisformcouldneverbe ananswertotheaspirationsofworkers."
Thedelegatesissuedaseriesofconclusionsandrecommendations,oneofwhichstatedthatleadersin manytradeunionsaremoreinterestedinthepolitical groupstheybelongtothaninthelabourcommunity theyrepresent.
TherewerenoCubandelegates,althoughCubahas awell-organisedY.C.W.movement.Themeetinghere saidadelegationwasnotsentbecauseofobstacles putforthbytheCubangovernment.
ArchbishopMarianoRossellyOrellanoofGuatemalatoldthedelegates:"Youfindbeforeyouaworld thatdoesnotunderstandyou.Evensomewhocall themselvesCatholicsmisunderstandsocialjusticeto theextentofcallingus-whodefendyourrights'communist'."
TheArchbishopwarnedtheYoungChristianWorkerstoguardagainst"thosewhoclamouragainstcommunismbecauseofpoliticalinterestsalone."
HisHolinessPopeJohnXXIIIsentamessagecommendingtheobjectivesofthemeeting.Mgr.Joseph Cardijn,founderoftheY.C.W.movement,alsosent amessage.Heexpressedthehopethatthemeeting wouldbeafurtherstepinY.C.W.effortsto"respond totheproblemsofyoungworkers."
Otherconclusionsofthemeetingherestated: ' Thereisgreatconfusionamongyoungworkersas totherealityoftradeunionlifeinLatinAmerica.
Religionformostyoungworkersrepresentsa traditionthatispractisedwithsentimentalism. Youngpeopledonotpractisetheirreligionbecausetheydonotknowenoughaboutit.
Youthisbeingde-Christianisedbyimmoralfilms. anti-religiousconversations,obsceneliterature,and theridiculingofthosewhopractisetheirreligion.
Thedelegatesissuedadeclarationstatingthatthe Y.C.W.isa.layorganisedgroup,withamandate fromthehierarchy,whichusesallresourcestoenable youngworkerstoliveanentirelyChristianlife.

ASTUDENTOFPSYCHOLOGYCOULDHAVEA FIELDDAYIFHEWOULDPICKUPACOLLECTION PLATEONSUNDAYANDGETAN"USHER'SEYE VIEW"OFCATHOLICSMAKINGTHEIROFFERINGTOGOD,
Someostentatiouslydropintheirenvelopeas thoughitcontainedathousand,whileotherswadup anotetillitisscarcelyrecognisableaslegaltender. Someassumeanattitudeofdeepestprayerfulnessas theplateispassedundertheirnose;othersdipin theirpocketinannoyedfashionandthrowinwhat loosechangeishandy.Somefollowtheusher'severy moveashegetsclosersoasnottomissdroppingin theiroffering;othersstudiouslyavoidanyinterestin whattheyhavecometoregardasanecessaryevil.
Bethatasitmay,therecanbenodoubtthatif Catholicswillhaveanysavingvirtueintheeyesof theLord,formostofthemitwillbetheirgreat generosity.Notthatallofuscouldnotdobetter,but thattheChurchhasprosperedbecauseofthesacrificesofitspeople.Witnessourremarkableparochial schoolsystemforiproof.
Weoftenwonder,however,whetherwewouldnot dowelltoreturntothepracticeoftheearlyChurch andinvolveourpeopleinsomesortofoffertoryprocession.Thephysicaldifficultiesinvolvedinsucha practicewouldbeenormous,butthepsychological advantagestobegainedwouldbejustasgreat.
Thechiefsuchadvantagewouldbetherealisation thatwecometoMass,notonlytoget,buttogive.We mustgive.Thisgiving,whichwecallsacrifice,isan expressionofman'snaturaldesiretoacknowledgehis dependenceuponandhisneedofGod.
Thegiftthatwegivemaybenothingofitself.It derivesitsrealimportancefromthefactthatitrepresentsuswhoarethegivers.SoitisintheMassthat thebreadandwineofthesacrificeinthemselvesdo notamounttoagreatdeal,butequivalentlyweput ourselvesonthepatenwiththehostandinthechalice withthewine.Wegiveourselves.
TheearlyChristianswerekeenlyawareoftheimportanceofthisgiving.Theycameinprocessionto thealtarbearingtheirgifts-theirloavesofbread andbottlesofwine,theirbasketsoffruitandsacks ofvegetables.Theygavegenerouslyofthebestthat theyhadsothattheirsacrificewouldreallymean something.
Thepriestwouldthenblesstheseofferingswitha threefoldblessing,ashestilldoesoverthehostand thechalice:"Haecdona,haecmunera,haecsancta sacrificia."The"dons"werethegifts.Fromone man'ssuperfluityotherswhowereinneedcouldfreely receiveaftertheMass.Therewasnoorganisedcharity inthosedaysexceptthatwhichcentredaroundthe altaratMass.
The"munera"weretheofferingswhichwereused forthesupportoftheworkoftheChurch,prettymuch likeourenvelopeofferingsareusedtoday.The"sancta sacrificia"werethematerialsoftheparticularMass. Fromthebreadandwinethathadbeenofferedthe priestwouldusesometobechangedintotheBodyand BloodofChristatthisMass.
Thentheseennobledgiftswouldbeofferedinreturn tothefaithfulinCommunion.ManhadgiventoGod; nowGodgivesbacktomanhis'giftsanctifiedthrough thepriestlyactionofConsecration.
Psychologically,ifwebroughtourofferingstothe altarandrealisedthattheseofferingsrepresentedus, wewouldwantthemtobeasfineaspossible.No onewouldwanttobeniggardlywiththeLord.Remember,then,thatthecollectionisnotaweeklyshakedownbythepriestsoftheparish.ItisyouropportunitytoreturntotheLordforallthatHehasgiven toyou.

HisHolinessPopeJohnXXIIIhasannouncedhewillissuea documenttocommemoratethe70thanniversaryofthepublication ofPopeLeoXIII'sencyclicalon PopeJohnmadehisannouncementatanaudience fordiplomatsattheHoly SeewhohadcometoextendNewYear'sgreetings. ThePope,inreturn,extendedhisgreetingstotheir countriesandtoallthe peoplesoftheworld.
Amongthediplomats presentweretheenvoysof threeLatinAmericancountrieswheretheChurchhas recentlybeenundergovernmentattack:theambassadorsofHaitiandthe DominicanRepublicand charged'affairsofCuba. Alsoattendingwerethediplomaticrepresentativesof theLithuanianandPolish governments-in-exile.
ThePopenotedthatthere isanxietyforpeaceinthe worldandtoldthediplomatsthatthe"Churchar-
PiusXl-40thAnniv. dentlydesiresthisincomparablebenefitofsocialand internationalpeace." He thenrevealed"somewhat aheadoftime"hisplanto commemorate"RerumNovarum."Hesaid:

Theaudiencetookplace asusualinSt.Peter'sbasilica.Acknowledgingthe warmapplausewhichgreetedhisentranceintothe church,thePopesaidthat whileitwascoldoutside, therewasnolackofwarmth intheheartsofthosepresent.
ThePopepaidspecial tributetothePontificalAssociationfortheHoly Childhood,worldwidechildren'sorganisationdevoted tofosteringbaptismand Christianeducationforchildreninmissioncountries.

SoldierToSaint Martinissupposedto haveseveredhiscloakwith aswordtogivehalfofitto abeggarwhostoodshiveringatthegatesofAmiens. Accordingtothesamelegend,Christappearedtohim inadream,wearingthe halfcloakMartinhadgiven thebeggar.Thisprompted Martintoseekbaptism.

NinepriestsofCanton,inclusiveofBishopDominic TangS.J.,areinprison. One,perhapsseveral,of theseprisonershavebeen deportedtothenorthof China, REFUGEESFROM CHINAARRIVEIN HONGKONG
ThearrivalinHongkong, onOctober25th,ofagroup of47refugeeswasquite exceptional.Mostfrequentlyrefugeescomesingly.
The47camefromthevillageofWan-chi,Districtof Wei-yang,Province of Kwangtung. Thegroup includedagoodnumberof womenandchildren.They lefttheirprovinceat nightfallonOctober24th andarrivedinHongkongon theafternoonofthenext day. Theyhadplanned toescapeaslongagoas lastJunebuttheywereunabletocarryouttheirdesignbecausethejunksof thevillage,oneofwhich wasnecessaryforthem, wereunderheavyguard.On the24th,theguardunexpectedlyleftitspostand the47movedfastandgot awaywithoutbeingpursued.Theirtripbyjunk waswithoutincident.
OnapproachingHongkong theywerestoppedbyapatrolofmaritimepoliceand towedtoport. Afterinterrogationtheywerepermittedtodebarkandthe ReverendElbertGatesof the"ChurchWorldService"whowasintheneighbourhoodtookthemin chargeandofferedthem ameal. Theyremarked thattheyhadnotseenso muchfoodinyears.They ateasonlyfamishedpeople can. Itwasthelackoffood andoffreedomthatmade themdecidetoleavetheir nativevillagewhichearly intheyearhad250inhabitantsbutwhichnowhas notmorethan150.Many aresufferingfromberiberi. Itisalwaysstupifyingto hearfromrefugeesabout theterrifyingmortalityrate.

Learningoftheshortage ofdrugsinherhospital,the crewoftheUhlmann "adopted"SisterHildaand beganwritingtothelarge Americandrugfirmsexplainingthemissioner's needs. Suchwellknown drugconcernsasLederle, Pfizer,Bristol,Scheringand othersdonatedlargequantitiesofvaluablemedicines.
TheUhlmann,puttingintoKaohsiungharbourearly thisweek,hadthegiftmedicinesaboard,Thiswas justoneofmanycontributionstoSt.Joseph'sbythe Navycrewmen. Eight monthsago,thesameship arrivedinKaohsiungcarryinganemergencyelectricgeneratorforthehospital. Thatgift,however, wasapersonalgiftofthe Uhlmanncrew,whohad collectedoverthreehundreddollarstobuyit. SisterHilda,whograduatedfromGeorgeWashingtonUniversityMedical School,Washington,C.D.,in 1938,isamemberofthe FranciscanMissionarySistersoftheImmaculate
Conception. Sheadministeredtothesickand woundedinChinaduring WorldWarIIandwasin Tientsinwhentheinvading ChineseCommunistsmarchedsouthtooccupymainlandChina.
FleeingwithhercommunitytoFormcsa.in1949, Sr.Hildawastheprime moverbehindtheestablishmentofSt.Joseph'sHospitalwhereshehasbeendirector,diagnosticianend surgeoneversince. REFUGEESFROM CHINAARRIVEIN IIONGKONG
ThearrivalinHongkong. onOctober25th,ofagroup of47refugeeswasquite exceptional.Mostfrequentlyrefugeescomesingly. The47camefromthevillageofWan-chi,Districtof Wei-yang,Provinceof Kwangtung.Thegroup includedagoodnumberof womenandchildren.They lefttheirprovinceat nightfallonOctober24th andarrivedinHongkongon theafternoonofthenext day.Theyhadplanned toescapeaslongagoas lastJunebuttheywereunabletocarryouttheirdesignbecausethejunksof thevillage,oneofwhich wasnecessaryforthem, wereunderheavyguard.On the24th,theguardunexpectedlyleftitspostand the47movedfastandgot awaywithoutbeingpursued.Theirtripbyjunk waswithoutincident.
OnapproachingHongkong theywerestoppedbyapatrolofmaritimepoliceand towedtoport. Afterinterrogationtheywerepermittedtodebarkandthe ReverendElbertGatesof the"ChurchWorldService"whowasintheneighbourhoodtookthemin chargeandofferedthem ameal. Theyremarked thattheyhadnotseenso muchfoodinyears.They ateasonlyfamishedpeople can. Itwasthelackoffood andoffreedomthatmade themdecidetoleavetheir nativevillagewhichearly intheyearhad250inhabitantsbutwhichnowhas notmorethan150.Many aresufferingfromberiberi. Learningoftheshortage ofdrugsinherhospital,the crewoftheUhlmann "adopted"SisterHildaand beganwritingtothelarge Americandrugfirmsexplainingthemissioner's needs.Suchwellknown drugconcernsasLederle, Pfizer,Bristol,Scheringand othersdonatedlargequantitiesofvaluablemedicines.
TheUhlmann,puttingintoKaohsiungharbourearly thisweek,hadthegiftmedicinesaboard,Thiswas justoneofmanycontributionstoSt.Joseph'sbythe Navycrewmen. Eight monthsago,thesameship arrivedinKaohsiungcarryinganemergencyelectricgeneratorforthehospital. Thatgift,however, wasapersonalgiftofthe Uhlmanncrew,whohad collectedoverthreehundreddollarstobuyit.
