Aminimumgoaloffivebeddinghavebeenreceived milliondollars(A£2,475,000)hasbeensetforthe appeal,whichprovidesbasicsupportfortheprogrammeofCRS-NCWC,the US.Catholicoverseasreliefagency.

DuringthepastyearCatholicReliefServicesaided some40millionneedy peopleinmorethan60 countries.Forthefourth straightyearitsoverseas shipmentsofclothing,medicineandU.S.surplusfood totalledmorethanonebillionpounds.

Theseshipmentswere valuedatmorethan90milliondollars.

A40-dayLentenCampaignamongchildrenin Catholicparochialschools willbeginonFebruary15, AshWednesday. Inthe pastyearthechildren's contributions,whichgoto aidneedychildrenoverseas,havetotalledmore thanonemilliondollars.

ArchbishopAlterstatedin hisletterthatpresentreportsonthe1960ThanksgivingCliothingCollection Conductedthroughoutthe countryindicatethatitwas "evenmoresuccessfulthan thoseinthepast."

Sevenmillionpoundsof usedclothing,shoesand

sofarfromalloverthe countryattheCRS-NCWC warehouseaspokesmansaid. Thisfigureisslightlyahead ofthefigureforthesame timelastyear,whenalmost15millionpoundsof usedclothingwerecollected.

CRS-NCWChassofar processed2,500,000pounds ofclothingforshipmentto Taiwan,Korea,Vietnam, Germany,Trieste.Austria, AlgeriaandEgypt.

AuxiliaryBishopEdward E.SwanstromofNewYork, executivedirectorofCatholicReliefServices,said the1,152,195,183poundsof reliefgoodsshippedoverseasbytheagencyinthe pastyearin1,761shipments to64countrieswerevalued at90,694,616dollars.

Surplusfooddonatedby theU.S.governmentmade up664,539,255dollarsworth ofthetotal,while26,155,361 dollarsworthweresupplies purchasedbyorgivento CRS-NCWC.

Anunidentifiedperson waskilledwhenpolice openedfireonabout1,000 Catholicsgatheredoutside aColombopolicestation todemandthereleaseof twomenwhohadbeendetainedforquestioning.Policealsousedteargasto breakupthecrowd.

NationalisationofCeylon's Catholicschools,against whichCeyloneseCatholics andthenation'sBishops haveprotested.,vigorously, wentintoeffectonDecember1. Catholicchildren stayedawayfromnationalisedschoolsindroves.Most ofthe220,000pupilsin Catholicschoolsbeganto

boycottthemfromNovember28on.

Thenationalisationbill passedinParliamentinmidNovemberProvidedthat topflightschools-thoseof GradesIandII-could renouncetheirformergovernmentsubsidyandbecometuition-charginginstitutions.Forty-twoofCeylon's48Catholicschoolsin thesecategoriesdecidedto doso,asdid13schools conductedbyotherreligious bodies.Thusone-thirdof allGradeIandGradeII schoolsdecidedtostayout ofthegovernmentplan.

Butthegreatmajorityof Ceylon's750Catholicschools areGradeIII,orvernacularschools,andthenew lawmadetheirtakeoverby thegovernmentmandatory.

Incloseto100ofthese, Catholicparentserected barbed-wirebarricadesas muchas12feethighand holedthemselvesintopreventgovernmentseizure.

RecentlytherewasheldaUnitedNationsCongress onthepreventionofcrime.Itisstrangetosaythatno onespokeoutmorestronglyagainstallpornographic, horrorpublicationsandimmoralliteraturethandid L.N.SmirnovoftheSovietUnion.Hedealtwiththose whocontendthattorestrainimmoralliteratureisto curtailfreedomsaying:"Talkingabouthumanrights inconnectionwithputtingthisdegradingmatterbefore juvenilesislikethedevilquotingtheBible."

Thisdoesnotmeanthatyouthalreadybentinthe directionofevilcannotbecomevirtuous,forwiththe graceofGod,nothingisimpossible.Butourpresent situationrathersuggeststhatyouthbecomesacquainted withtheknowledgeofgoodandevilattooprecocious anage.Onthemorningofanimportantbattle, Napoleontookawayfromhistentaportraitofhisson, theKingofRome.Thisportraithadbeentherefor severaldaysbeforethebattleinordertoinspirehis men.Asthebitterstrugglewasabouttobegin,he ordereditremoved,saying:"Itistoosoonforhimto seeabattlefield."

Australiaisamember,alongwithBritain,U.S.A., France,Philippines,Pakistan,N.ZealandandThailand, oftheSouthEastAsianTreatyOrganisationandif SEATOiscalledupontogiveassistancetostopaggressionbycommunistforcesinLaosthenwewillbecome activelyinvolvedinwhatwouldbehopedwouldbe similartoKorea,alimitedwar,butquiteabletobe thesmalltriggerthatsetsoffawiderconflict.The bigfactortorememberintheLaotiantroubleisthat RedChinaistheprincipalinvolvedmoresothan Russia.

ThepolicyoftheChinesebrandofworld-wide Communismisco-existencebyforceofarms,notby subversionaswithRussiainherroleof"peaceful" co-existence.

IsAustraliaatallcapableoftakingitsplaceinsuch asituation?Isoureconomy,atthemomentgeared toasmall,mobilearmy,onlypartofitwithmodern weaponsandequipment,capableofadrasticincrease? Theansweristhatitispossibleonlywithagreat sacrifice.Asacrificewhichotherpeopleinothercountrieshavepaidthroughheavytaxation.

Americahaswithoutdoubtbornethegreatestbur. denofallthefreenationsinthestruggleagainst communism.Sheisshowingsignsofnotwantingthis situationtocontinue.

ItispossiblethatshewillaskAustraliatocontributemoreinitsownarea.Andoneofthemost threateningspotsisatthemomentinourarea.Can Australiameasureup?Notwithoutaskingsacrifice ofthepeopleatpresentengrossedininternalgrowth.

Atthemomentwe.contributetotheCommonwealth StrategicReservebyabattalioninMalaya,twodestroyersorfrigateswithanaircraftcarrieronanannual visitandafighterwingoftwosquadrons.Therest ofthearmedforcesareconcentratedmainlyinthe EasternStatesandruntoatotalofabout50,000permanentmen.Notmuchwhenweconsidertheforces whicharealreadyestablishedeveninthetroublespots.

Greatdeliberationandmorethanwishfulthinking willhavetobethekeynoteofthecomingyear.Perhapsthetroublenearertohomegroundmightstir thingsalongabit.

Travellersreturningfrom Czechslovakiahaveexpressedconcernbecause theyheardnonewsof ArchbishopJosefBeranof Prague,accordingtoa dailynewspaperpublished inVienna.

Thepaper,NeuerKurier, statedthatthetravellers saidnoreportsaboutthe Archbishop,whowasimprisonedbythecommunists in1949,havebeenreceived foroverayear. ThepapersaidthatformerlytheArchbishop's fellow-prisonersandeven communistsourceshadreportedfromtimetotime onhiscondition.

"Amnestiedpriestsand nuns,whowouldcertainly haveheardoftheArchbishopduringtheirimprisonment,wereunableto Wood,Cool andCoke

Thisdoesnotmeanthatyouthalreadybentinthe directionofevilcannotbecomevirtuous,forwiththe graceofGod,nothingisimpossible.Butourpresent situationrathersuggeststhatyouthbecomesacquainted withtheknowledgeofgoodandevilattooprecocious anage.Onthemorningofanimportantbattle, Napoleontookawayfromhistentaportraitofhisson, theKingofRome.Thisportraithadbeentherefor severaldaysbeforethebattleinordertoinspirehis men.Asthebitterstrugglewasabouttobegin,he ordereditremoved,saying:"Itistoosoonforhimto seeabattlefield."

Notthatthecomingofanewyearwasanygreat signofpeaceintheworldnorwasitanyguarantee thateveryonewouldsettledown,puttheircardsonthe tableandworkoutasolutiontotheworld'stroubles.

Themachineryforsuchanoperationwasmore effectivelywreckedbyMr.(deskthumpingwitha shoe)Khrushchevthanwasatfirstrealised.

ThespateofhighlevelChristmasandNewYear wishesappearedtobemoreabreathingspaceandthe sayingofwhatoughttobesaidbythosewhoseoffice calledforsomeexchangeofgreeting.Acoupleobviouslyhadtheirtongueintheircheekanddidnot capwhoknewit.

IsAustraliaatallcapableoftakingitsplaceinsuch asituation?Isoureconomy,atthemomentgeared toasmall,mobilearmy,onlypartofitwithmodern weaponsandequipment,capableofadrasticincrease? Theansweristhatitispossibleonlywithagreat sacrifice.Asacrificewhichotherpeopleinothercountrieshavepaidthroughheavytaxation.

Americahaswithoutdoubtbornethegreatestburdenofallthefreenationsinthestruggleagainst communism.Sheisshowingsignsofnotwantingthis situationtocontinue.

ItispossiblethatshewillaskAustraliatocontributemoreinitsownarea.Andoneofthemost threateningspotsisatthemomentinourarea.Can Australiameasureup?Notwithoutaskingsacrifice ofthepeopleatpresentengrossedininternalgrowth.
