TheChristianof1960sawthepossibilityofadivisionamongsthisadversarieswhenKhrushchevand Maobegantoargueaboutthedoctrinalbasisofthe Communistcreed.AtthesametimeintheUnited Stateshewasfacedbythethreatofsectarianismthat seemedabouttocrushhislegitimateaspirationsin civiclife.
Inthefirstacttherewasagradualdrawingtogether oftheforcesofcommunismbecauseofmutualself interestinthestruggleagainstCapitalism.Khrushchev wassaidtohavewonthefightwhereasnobodyreally won.Fear4ftheWestconqueredbothKhrushchev andMaoandtheChristianwasfacedonceagainbya unitedfront.InfacttheChristianassuchdidnot enterthedrama:themainissuewashisexclusion. ATITSNATIONALCONVENTIONrecently theNationalCouncilofCatholicWomenhad oneworkshopwhosesubjectisworthyof furtherconsiderationhere.TheCommittee onFamilyandParentEducationoffereda veryfruitfulpaneldiscussiononthesubject: "SanctifyingSundayintheFamily."
THERECANBELITTLEDOUBTthatthissubjectis importantmorethaneverbecauseinsomanyinstances Sundayhaslostallsemblanceofitstruemeaningasthe mostimportantdayoftheweek.Moreandmore secularandbusinessinterestshaveinfringeduponthe Lord'sDayuntiltheLordhasbeenalmostcompletely discarded.

THEFACTthatformostpeopleSundayisnotanormal workingdaydoesnotmeanthatitisdivorcedfromits originalconnotation.Itisfarmore importantthanthecessationof man'sregularactivities.Sunday meansmorethanachanceto"lazearound,"ortocatch upontheworkaroundhome.Sundayis"Dominica," the"Lord'sDay." Sundayisaspiritualchallengetoallofustobegin anewtheserviceoftheLord.FortheearlyChristians itwasthedayoflivingcontaelwiththerisenChrist. ItearlybecamethedaytocelebratejoyfullyHis memoryintheHolyEucharist.
ThetransitionfromSundayasadayofworshipto justanotherdaycontradictstheuniquecharacterof Sunday.Weneedtoreaffirmforourselvesandtoshow othersthistruenatureoftheLord'sDay.
Ofcourse,forusHolyMassisthequintessenceof ourSundayworship,butwemustgobeyondthisand bringthetruespiritofSundayintoChristianhomes. TheatmosphereofthehomeonSundayshoulddefinitely bedifferent,morerelaxed,butaboveall,prayerfuland joyful.
Evenourdressshouldreflectthatthisisaspecialday. Thatiswhyitisnotalittleshockingtoseetheexttemes ofinformalityexhibitedbysomeonthisday.Theidea of"dressingup"forSundayisonemorewayofshowingthedistinctivecharacterofthisday.This"dressup"shouldbereflectedthroughtheday,notjustfcr goingtoMass.
InmusthomesSundaydinnerisstillaspecialcustom, butevenherewehaveseenaconsiderablefallingoff. Itcouldbemadeamorefestiveoccasionwithspecial foodandtablewareandamoreconsciousrealisationof theimportantunityofthefamilythatitexpresses.
THEREAREmanylittlewaysinwhichfamiliescould bettermaketheirhomes"churchesinminiature"on Sundays.Theycouldpreparethe PREPARATIONeveningbeforebyreadingtogether theProperoftheSundayMass andevendiscussingitbrieflysotheywouldbeready foritwhentheycametoMass.Theycouldinthehome discusstheSundaysermonanditsapplicationtotheir ownfamily.Theycouldadoptanumberofreligious practiceseitherathomeoratthechurchwhichwould emphasisethecharacteroftheLord'sDay'inaddition totheirparticipationinHolyMass.
Somechurchesaregoingbacktothepracticeofpublic SundayVespers,andadmittedly,althoughtheyare buckingatremendousindifferenceoramorepositive dedicationtosportsactivitiesandtelevisionandmovie entertainment,theyarefindingthatthereareagood numberwhodowanttomakeSundayareligiousday. Afterall,religionexpressesourrelationshipwith God.SinceSundayisthedayforacknowledgingthis obligation,itisnotenoughtofeelthatbecausewehave beentoMassthatourdutyisconcluded.Nowhere shouldthisberecognisedmorekeenlythaninthe familycirclewhichisachurchinminiature.

Thesestationsareoutposts ofcivilisation,verywell equipped,ontheedgeofthe desert.AtAliceSprings theGovernmenthasconcentratedthenativepopulationinasettlementat Amoonguna,sevenmiles southeastofAlice. This post-warsettlement,too,is providedwitheverythingcommunitykitchen,fine buildingsandschool.
Themenfish,huntandgardenandanumberofthem gotothemainlandtowork, especiallybyanarrangementwiththethreeServicesoftheArmy,Navy andAir.Theaborigines areregularlytransportedto Darwin,wheretheyhave jobsforwhicl'ttheyare wellpaid.Themarried mensupporttheirfamilies.

FromAliceSpringsFather Wormsflewover640miles ofdeserttotheKimberleys. Inthisdesertarerovingnatives-theso-called"lost tribes"-notinfluencedat allbywhites.Theypay occasionalvisitstothemissionstations,suchasthat atBalgo,conductedbythe Pallottines. Revisiting Broome,FatherWormswas obligedtoenterhospitalfor treatmentofaninfection, theresultofhisbushjourneyings.Hehadthepleasureofrevisitingthemost recentPallottinemissionat _LaGrange,foundedby himselfin1955.
Glancingthroughhis notes,FatherWorms'seyes dancedjoyouslyasthey lightedonsomelong,polysyllabicpersonalnames. Diocesansecretary,Colin Clune,saidthatafeatureof theyearwastheprogress madeincountryareas. GroupsinKalgoorlieand Boulderbegantofunction onceagainandanewgroup wasstartedinYorkwithan executivemembergoing fromPerthtoattendmeetingsalmosteveryweek. Therehasbeenanadvance inthenumberofgeneral meetingsbeingheldwhere youngworkersofthepariSh cancometogetherinaspirit offriendshipandreceive somedegreeofapostolic training.
MissPamWatson,secre_ taryoftheGirls'Movement,hastravelledtoYork almosteveryweekduring thepastthreemonthsto trainagroupoflocalleaders.Shesaidthisweekthat theYorkgroupisanexperimentwhichhasbeenso successfulthatitmayberepeatedinothernearby towns.
Alreadyalistofnames hasbeenbroughttoherofficefromPickeringBrook whereitshouldbepossible tobeginagroupinthenew year.Pamsaidthatthe methodofformingnewleadersbytheregularattendanceofanexecutivememberatthemeetingsofnew groupshadproveditself duringthepastyear.
Newgirls'groupshave beenopenedatComo,South Perth,York,Inglewood, Glendalough, Mundaring, Cottesloe,Bassendeanand Manning.Thenumberof generalmeetingshavefallen offslightlyandplansare beingmadetopromotethese infuture.
Duringthefirsthalfof 1961,bothMovementsare undertakingacampaignon "Work"inwhichleaders willenquireintotheattitude ofyoungworkerstotheir vocationinlife,thewaythey choosetheirjobs,thepossibilityofadvancement,the attitudetoemployersand otherworkers,etc.This campaignisscheduledto beginaboutthemiddleof January.
CommuniononChristmas Dayandsobeunitedwith ChristonHisbirthday.It wasalsoagreedthatthe effectofChristmasonthe worldcouldonlybeputintopracticewhenwealltry andcarryChristianprinciplesintooureveryday actionsthroughouttheyear.

Thefestivalprogramme wasasfollows:-Friday, PontificalHighMassat whichthePapalBlessing wasgiven.Saturday,Instructionforaltarserversin themorning;AHaibour tripintheafternoon;inthe eveningaDinnerforsenior altarserversandasocial eveningforjuniorsewers. Sunday,DialogueMass; SolemnPontificalBenedictionprecededbyaprocessioninhonourofSt. Stephenintheafternoon; theconcludingfunctionwas acombinedConcertinthe HobartCityHall,atwhich aPlayentitled"TheHeavensOpened"depictingthe lifeofSt.Stephen,and composedbyMonsignorJ. H.Cullen,V.G.,wasthe principlefeatureofthe prcgramme.
TheArchbishopofHobart(TheMostRev.G. Young,D.D.)preachedthe occasionalsermonatthe openingoftheFestival.He emphasisedtheindispensablepartwhichthealtar serverplaysintheliturgy oftheChurch.Theliturgicalrevivalthatwasnow takingplacethroughoutthe Church'slifeshouldimpress uponallwhowereprivilegedtoassistatGod'saltar,thedignityoftheiroffice. BytheircloserelationshipwiththePriest atMass,theyweregiven theopportunityofexercising tothefull,theirsharein Christ'sPriesthoodasmembersofHisMysicalBody.
Forthisreason,saidthe Archbishop,hewasdelightedtoseesomanysenior servers,manyofwhom
werefathersoftheyounger serversparticipatinginthe Festival.
Aspecialfeatureofthe Festivalwasthecombined congregationalsinging;all servershadbeenspecially preparedunderthedirectionoftheRev.J.Ryanto singthemusicforthevariousliturgicalfunctions.
Asamementoofthe Festivaleachserverreceivedcopiesofthreepublicationsspeciallyprepared fortheFestival-these were:TheAltarServers' partintheLiturgy;Meditationsforthealtarse:ver andaBookofceremonies incorporatingthelatestliturgicalregulations.
