BishopGadsaidthegovernmenthadactedagainon demandstohaltconstruction byOrthodoxArchbishop TheoklitosofAthens.The OrthodoxChurchistheofficialStatereligionin Greece.

BishopGadchargedthat theMinistryofEducation andReligionsuspendedconstructionofHolyTrinity Churchinspiteofaruling bytheGreeksupreme court,theCouncilofState. Thecourthadruledthatthe government''cannotprevent thecontinuationofsaidconstructionandnoonehasa righttotakeawaythepermissionthathadbeen granted."

"In1958theysucceeded inobtainingpermission,in accordancewiththeircountry'slaws,tobuildachurch. Perhapsthatisthereasonwhyartistsalwayspicture loveasalitlecupidwhonevergrowsup.Armedwith onlyabowandarrowinanatomicuniverse,thepoor littleangelhashardlyachance.

SaintPaulspeakdoffaithandhopedisappearingin heaven,butloveremainingforever.Yettheonething thatmortalswanttobeeternalisthatwhichtheymost quicklychokebeforeithasbeguntowalk.Ifaman camefromMarsandhadneverheardofthegreatest eventinhistory,whichwasthebirthoftheDivine LoveinthepersonofChrist,heprobablycouldguess therestofthestoryandpredictHisCrucifixion.

Allhewouldneedtodowouldbetolookattheway eventhebestofhumanlovesaredivorced,denied, mutilated,barteredandstunted.

Butiflovebewhattheheartwantsaboveallthings else,whydoesitnotgrowinlove?Itisbecausemost heartswantlovelikeaserpent,notlikeabird.They wantloveonthesameplaneastheflesh,andnotalove whichwingsitswayfromearthtomountainpeakand thenislostinthesky.Theywantalove'that,like Cupid,doesnotgrow;notalovewhichdiesinorderto ascendliketheRisenChrist,Whoacceptsdefeatand conquersitbyLove.Theywanttheimpossible:repetitionwithoutsatiety,whichnohumanbodycangive.

Therefusaltosurrenderthehorizontalforthevertical,becauseitdemandssacrifice,condemnstheheartto mediocrityandstaleness.Loveisnobargain.Itappears soattractive,likeapreciousviolinadvertisedatalow price,butonediscoversthatafteronehasitwithout mucheffortitisuselessunlessonedisciplineshimselfto itsuse.

Thecrossisafarbetterpictureofwhatlovereallyis thanCupid.Thelatter'sdartsareshotinthedarkin amomentwhentheheartleastsuspectsit;butthe crossissomethingoneseesontheroadwayoflifea longtimeahead.andtheinvitationtocarryittoa resurrectionofliveisfrightening,indeed.Thatiswhy theLordhassofewlovers.Theywantthatcross streamlined,withoutHim,Whosaid:"Ifanymanhas amindtocomeMyway,lethimrenounceselfandtake uphiscrossandfollowMe."

Fewhavedescribedsacrificialloveinmarriagebetter thanFrederickOzanaminhis"HistoryofCivilisation intheFifthCentury":-

ThreearticlesinthesecularPressrecentlyonthe subjectof"mercykilling"highlightedtheGodless natureofmostpeople'sthinkingincludingthetwo authorsofthearticles.

OnewasaclergymanintheEasternStates,the otheraprofessorof"ethicsandmorals"intheU.S.A. Thethirdwasreaderreactionwhichshowedonly threepeopleoutofsevenconcedingGodanyrightsin thematteroflifeanddeath.

Thislatteralsoshowedaverygoodreasonwhythe everydayopinionofpeoplecannotbetheinterpreter oftheDivinepositivelawandthenaturallaw.Itis toochangeable,tooemotionalandfullofcontradictions.

LawsestablishedbyGodareimmutableandeverlasting.CivillawcannotchangethemnorcanChurch law.TheyremainasGodhasdecreedthem,ableto bediscoveredbyman'slogicalthinkingandbinding onallhumanbeings.Thatsomepeople,evenlearned ones,differonthefactoflawdoesnotmatteronewhit.

Thetopicwastermedthe"Patient'srighttodie." Itwouldbewelltopointoutthatnohumanbeing hasarighttodie.Godgavemanarighttoliveand fromthemomentofconceptionthatrightmustbe protectedandrespectedbyall;bytheindividualhimselfwhenableandbyothers.Thisisaninherent rightandthereisnoquestionofmaninterferingby directmeanstotakeawaythatlife.

Thewholesubjectofeuthenasiaormercykilling, feticidemurder,oranyoftheothernamesgiventothis subject,evolvesaroundthe5thCommandment:Thou shaltnotkill.

InthiswehaveaDivinecommandthatweshallnot takeawayourownlife(suicide)orthelifeofanother. Italsopostulatesthatweshalltakeallordinaryreasonablemeanspossibletopreserveourlifeandthelives ofotherhumanbeings.

Thequestionofsufferingisatotallyseparateconsideration.Freedomfromsufferinghasneverbeen promisedbyGodtoanyofus.Grantedwemayuse allreasonablemeansofpreservinglifeandinthe processkillingpainwithdrugsaslongasthosedrugs donottakeawaylifeitselfbydirectmeans.

Whatorwhoisgoingtobethemeasureofsuffering?Thepatient?Thedoctor?Relatives who areonlysufferingintheiremotions?Whatofmedicaladvancesin,notonlythereliefofsuffering,butin thecureofthecause?

Weareboundtqtakeallreasonablemeanstopreservelife.Everydoctorisadoctoraccordingtohis professionforthatpurpose.

Wherethereisthequestionofusingextraordinary meanstopreservelife,tokeepapatientalivewhere thereisnoreasonablehopeoflifeexceptbyartificial andunusualmeans,thiswearenotboundtodo.This wasclearlyenunciatedbythelateHolyFather,Pope PiusXIIinanaddressto600doctors.Headded,however,"Thatallformsofdirecteuthenasia,thatisthe administrationofadrugtoproduceorhastendeathareunlawfulbecauseinthatcaseaclaimisbeingmade todisposedirectlyoflife."

Thewholetroublewiththerecentarticlesisthat theypresupposeaworldwherealllawsarecurrently turnedbymen,irrespectiveofWhomadethem,tosuit themselves.Godhasnoplace.

Suchstatementsas"Deathcontrol,likebirthcontrol, isamatterofhumandignity.Withoutitpersonsbecomepuppets."Rathertheyarebothmattersof humandignitybecausetheyarebothpreservedin theirdignitybyGod'slawwhichseemstobeignored.Achangeincivillawwillnotchangethemorality oftheact.

Lagos.Nigeria,ANigerianstudenthasreturnedtohishomeland afterthreeyearsatMoscowUniversitytowarnagainsttheSoviet threattothisnewlyindependentAfricannotion.

TheophilusOkonkwo,28, whomaSovietNewspaper calledanAmericanspy,has broughthiswarninghomeat greatpersonalriskandloss.

Hehasspokenoutinnewspaperarticlesandismaking anationwidelecturetour inspiteofcommunist threatswhichhavealready ledtooneattemptonhis life. Toalerthispeople totheRedmenacehehas alsohadtointerrupthis medicalstudies.

Whilestudyingmedicine intheSovietUnion,Mr. Okonkosaid,hegradually becameawarethathewas beingusedaspartofaRed plottoenslavehisown people.

Hevoicedhisfirstwarningagainsttheplotonhis wayhome,inGermany, alongwithtwootherAfricanstudentsexpelledfrom theU.S.S.R.forrefusingto aidSovietpropagandaefforts. Inanopenletter tothegovernmentsofall Africancountries-writtenonbehalfoftheAfrican StudentUnionintheU.S.S.R.-thethreeyoungmen stressedthe"greatdanger ofcommunismtotrue Africanism."

Theletter,senttoAfrican

governmentsbytheGermanForeignAffairsMinistry,declared:

"Newanddangerous formsofcolonialismanddiscriminationarebeingfosteredbythecommunistsystemandSovietstrategists, andareagravethreatto thefutureofAfrica.

"Thisnewcolonialismis beingadvancedsubtlyby deceitfulcommunistpropagandaandsubversion,and unsubtlybycommunistcausedviolenceandefforts tocausechaosinAfrica."

Mr.Okonkwocontinued hiswarningsafterhisarrivalhereinOctober.He expressedconcernaboutthe ignoranceandindifference ofthemassesoftheNigerianpeopletotheSoviet threat,andnotedthatNigeria,asanundeveloped country,isparticularlyvulnerabletoRedinroads.

Hehasvoicedspecialoppositiontotheestablishment ofaSovietembassyhere which,hesaid,wouldbea centreforintrigueagainst thetrueinterestsofNigeria.

AlthoughtheArchbishop didnotreferspecifically tocommunismintheCastroregime,organised bandsofCastroisthecklerstriedtopreventthe readingofthepastoral letter.Theycrowdedinto SantiagoCathedraland sangrevolutionarysongs duringtheMassesat whichthepastoralwas read.

The76-year-oldprelate's letter,entitled"Romeor Moscow,"exhortedCuban Catholicstorelyontheir strengthas"goodsoldiersof Christ"inthebattleagainst communism.TheArchbishop saidCubansshouldnotallowthebatleagainstcommunismtobefoughtalone bytheUnitedStatesandits economicpower.

Theexpulsionorderwas signedbyAuxiliaryBishop EduardoBozaMasvidallof Havana,whoisalsorector oftheuniversity. TheCastroistUnionof UniversityStudentsreplied byinvitingthe17expelled studentstoattendHavana University,whichiscontrolledbythegovernment.

Theexpelledstudents lateraccusedactiveCatholic students,bothinVillanueva andHavanaUniversitiesof supportingcounter-revolutionaryactivities.

VillanuevaUniversity, founded15yearsagoby AmericanAugustinian priests,haspreviouslybeen subjecttoCastroistpropagandaattacks.

ABRIDGE TOUNITY

DESPITEtheseriousdifferencesthathavebeen aggravatedsoseverelyintherecentlycompletedpoliticalcampaignintheUnitedStates, itwouldseemthattherewillbesomegoodeffectsfrom theinjectionofthe"religiousissue"intothepolitical arena.

IthasmademanyCatholicsrealisethatinsomevery importantaspectstheyare"different"fromtheir brotherAmericans,andthatitisnecessaryforthem toknowthebasisofthisdifference.Theymust,therefore,haverealisedthenecessityofbeingbetterinformed ontheirownFaith,notonlyinordertoanswerobjectionsmadeagainstit,butalsotosupplytheright answersforsincereinquirers.

COMMON ENEMIES

ASFARastheaverageProtestantisconcerned,weare convincedthathewasrelativelyuntouchedbymuch ofthescurrilouschargesbeingmade, andthatformany,therewasoccasion seriouslytoexaminethetraditional 'imitationsunderwhichtheirCatholic neighbourshavelaboured.Actually, althoughinhigh-level,intellectualcirclestherehas beenconsiderableandamicableexploratoryinvestigationofthepreliminarystepsthatmightleadtoa reunionamongProtestantandCatholicChristians,our countryisfarbehindtheprogressmadeinsomeEuropeancountries,notablyinGermany.

There,wherethevariousChristiangroupssuffered equallyundertheoppressionofNazism,andmore recently,ofcommunism,therehasbeenextensivecollaborationandco-operation.Theresistancetocommon enemiesofallreligionhascompelledsincereChristians toworktogetherandtodevelopasolidfront.

Interestingly,itappearsthatitwillbetheliturgy, whichistheworship-lifeoftheChurches,thatholds suchgreatpromiseofbeingabridgeoverwhichreal reunionmaybeaccomplishedbeforetoolong.This, withtheannouncedintentionofreligiousunityproposed byPopeJohnXXIIIforthecomingGeneralCouncil, offerexcitingprospectstoanticipatewithinthenext fewyears.

OurCatholicworshiphaskeptsacredsomethingthat mostoftheProtestantChurcheshavecompletelyabandoned,andthatisthefundamentalnotionofsacrifice. Mostoftheirreligiousservicesinvolvecommunity prayer,communitysongandasermon.Buttheyhave losttheprimarycharacteristicofreligionwhichinvolvesalsoasacrificeorofferingmadetoGod.

AWAKENING

ONTHEOTHERHAND,thoughwehavemaintained thisindispensableelement,toanunfortunateextent wehaveabandonedthenecessary notionofparticipation.Fortoolong andfortoomanytheMass,which isthecentralactofourCatholicworship,hasbeena passivethinginwhichourgoodpeoplehavesilently letthepriestgohiswaywhiletheywenttheirs.Their waytooeasilybecameadistractedindifferencetothe sublimeactiontakingplaceinwhichtheyshouldhave sointimateapart.

Thepastfewyearshaveseenconsiderablestrides madeinacounteractingthis"boredominthepews"and anawakeningoftherealisationofthetremendousthing thatMassis.ThistrendtowardsmoreactiveparticipationhasnotgoneunnoticedamongmanyProtestants whohavemissedthisverythingintheMass,whichto themwasanunintelligiblehodge-podge.

WeCatholicsarenowrealisingthegreatvalueof activeandintelligentparticipation.TheProtestant Christiansarefindingthattheirreligiousserviceslack acertainessencethatwetakeforgranted.

Thistwofoldawarenessmaywellbuildthebridge thatwillreuniteChristendomandtrueunitywillbe foundintheonlyplacepossible-beforetheEucharistic altar,whichistherenewaloftheLastSupperwhere Christprayed:"Thatallmaybeone."

Icouldn'tgethiswords outofmymind.During theChristmasseasonI thought-manytimes-of whathehadsaid.Where WAStheChrist-Childin ourCity'sChristmas?

Ofcoursewehadacrib inourhome,rightunder theChristmastree.And therewasalargecribin ourchurch.Butthere werenoreligiousdisplays inourstorewindows; therewerenoindications anywherepublicly,that ChristmaswastheChristChild'sbirthday.

Thatevening,oursons askedsomeneighbours' childrentocometoseeour crib.Manyofthemhad neverlookedatacrib closeupbefore.Several youngsterssatdownon thefloorandbegantoarrangetheanimalsandthe figuresoftheHolyFamily andtheshepherdsandthe kings.

SoIwentintotheliving roomandbeganaprocedurethatwenton,every afternoon,untilChristmas Eve.Thechildrensoon knewitbyheart;they neverletmeleaveoutany ofthestory,whichwent somethinglikethis:
