ChallengeInCalendar,RubricsExaltChrist

Inmakingtheannouncement,PopeJohnexplained thepartialandpreliminary natureofthesechanges: "Afterlongandmature consideration,Wereached theopinionthatthemore basicprinciplesaffecting thegeneralliturgicalrestorationshouldbepresentedtothefathersatthe forthcoming ecumenical council, butthatthecorrectionoftherubricsofthe missalandbreviaryshould notbedelayedanylonger."

Themostsignificantfeatureofthecodificationis therenewedemphasisplacedonthetemporalcycleof theChurchcalendar, thatis, theSundaysoftheyearand thefeastsandseasons whichcelebratethechief mysteriesoftheChristian religion.

Superfrially,thismay appeartobeakindof down-gradingofthefeast daysofthesaints.In reality,itisanewreminderthatallfeastdays,includingthefeastsofthe saints,mustbecentredupon ChristHimself.

Thisreinforcementofthe chieffeastsandseasonsis evident,forexample,inthe newandhigherrankingof Sundaysas"firstclass" (AdventandLent)and "secondclass"(otherSundays).

EverySundayoftheyear isintendedtobeacelebrationoftheresurrection ofOurLordfromthedead andadayofbaptismalrenewal. Theseconcepts, plannedasoneoftheresultsofthe1955reformof theHolyWeekandEaster liutrgy, shouldnowbeenhancedbythetechnical classificationofSundaysin themissalandbreviary.

Asecondgoodinstanceof thesamethingisthestress laidonthequarterlyemberdaysbywhichthefour seasonsoftheyearareconsecratedtoGod.These periodshavereceivedspecialrecognitionas"weekdaysofsecondclass"secondonlyto.AshWednesdayandthedaysofHoly Week.

Withthesameemphasis, theHolySeein1955urged bishopstoconferHoly OrdersonemberSaturdays sothattheprayerandfastingofthepeoplemight accompanytheordination ofpriests, deacons, and otherclerics.

Awholeseriesofsmall butmeaningfulchangesaffectsthecelebrationof Mass.Somearesimplifications.

Theadditionalprayers orcollectsatMasswillbe morestrictlylimitedfrom nowon.Thosesometimes requiredbylocalbishops areseverelyrestricted. Theymaybeorderedfor "graveandpublicnecessityorcalamity,"butona temporarybasisratherthan permanentlyorindefinitely.

ToemphasisemoreimportantpartsoftheMass, thecelebrantofsungMass isdirectedtosaytheprayersatthefootofthealtar andthelastGospelsilently, notaloud.ForlowMasses,priestshavebeenremindedagain-aswas donebytheHolySeein 1958-torecitetherequiredtextsloudly,clearly, andslowly.Toincreasethe dignityoftheordinary parishhighMass, theincensingscustomaryat solemnMassmaynowbe addedatallsungMasses.
