TwoChurchesInTwoDioceses 150MilesApartAreBlessed

Norseman,agoldfieldstown,liesalmost dueeast,450milesdistant,fromPerthby road.Onehundred-and-fiftymilesfurther southEsperancenestlesinitsheart-shaped harbour,fringedbymyriadislands.

NorsemanisintheDioceseofPerthandEsperanceanswerstoSunbury, butbothtownsandthe nearbycentresareserved bythesamepriest,who musttravelvastdistances tocareforhispeople.

OnSeptember4,ineach ofthesetowns,anewand beautifulchurchwasblessed anddeclaredopenedbythe MostRev.L.J.Goody, BishopofBunbury,who thusinauguratedanewera ofpracticalfaithforthe Catholicpeoplewhohave waitedsolongtohavethe BlessedSacramentintheir midst.

Althoughasearlyas1910 theSistersofMercyhad openedaschoolinNorseman,itwasriotuntil1936 thattheCatholicpopulation becamelargeenoughtowarranttheappointmentofa residentparishpriest.

In1940thepresentconventschoolwasopenedand hasalsobeenusedforthe celebrationofMassonSundays.AtEsperancetheMass hasbeenofferedinthe smallchapelofthenuns' beachhouse.

Thechurches,therefore, wereanecessity,especially inviewoftherecentdevelopmentofEsperanceand thegrowingneedsofthe Norsemanpopulation.

Bothceremonieswere wonderfullysuccessfuland HisLordship,whohad travelledbycarwithhis secretary,FatherT.O'Neill, fromBunbury,expressed pleasureattheEsperance church,dedicatedtoOur Lady,StaroftheSea,and attheremodelledpresbytery besideit.

Theblessingtookplaceat 10a.m.,followedbyHoly Mass,celebratedbythe Bishop. * *

ARRIVINGatNorsemanby 2p.m.,thepartywaswelcomedtotheimpressivenew CatholicCentre.consisting ofabeautifulchurchwith presentseatingfor300,a finemodernschoolforthe

SistersofMercy(remodelled fromtheschool-hall)anda presbyterybesidethechurch reconstructedfromapreviousschoolbuilding.

Theoverallcostofthe projectwas£12,500,of which£9,500v.asthecost ofthechurchandfurnishings.

DuringSeptemberand October,1959,theRev.M. Byrnepersonallycalledon everyCatholicfamilybelweenEsperanceand Widgiemoolthatoinaugurate thethree-yearschemewhich willprovidethismoneyand duringthefirstninemonths £2,500wascontributed.

FatherByrneworkedwith awill,helpingwithallforms oftheconstructionandhis examplehasbeenaninspirationtoall.

Barely11monthshave elapsedsincethecommencementoftheplanandgreat praiseisduetoMr.Stan Costellowhocarriedoutthe constructionsandalterations intherecordtimeofthree months.

AT4.30p.m.,insplendid weather,BishopGoody, leadingaprocessionofvisitingpriests,blessedthe Norsemanpresbytery,the schoolandtheextereiorof thechurch.

Then,inthechurch,followedtheintoningofthe LitanyoftheSaints,the prayersofdedicationand theMassoftheSunday.

WithHisLordshippresidinginthesanctuary,the Rev.HenryByrne,ofShentonPark(brotherofthe parishpriest,FatherM.F. Byrne),wascelebrantata MissaCantata,theRev.T. Gahan,ofKalgoorlie,assisting.

FatherO'Neillwasmaster ofceremoniesandpresent withHisLordshipinthe sanctuaryweretheV.Rev.R. Healy,Adm.,andFatherB. Harris,ofKalgoorlie.Fathers B.WhitelyandT.Prendivillewerealsopresent.

St.Joseph'sSchool,andat theconclusionoftheMassa TeDeumwaschantedbythe priestsassembledinthe sanctuary.

SPEAKINGtoapacked congregationofwellover 400,BishopGoodycongratulatedthepeopleforwhom thebuildingprojecthad beenundertaken,andby whosegenerosity,hardwork andsacrificeitwasmade possible.

Itwasarareandjoyful occasion,hesaid.Seldom couldtwochurchesindifferentdioceses,150 miles, apart,havebeenblessedand openedbythesameprelate fortheoneparishpriest.

Hecongratulated,Father Byrneonhisdevotionand untiringenergyandthanked thebuilderfortheartistic workandtheliturgical beautyofthechurch.

HisLordshipsaidthat graceswouldaccruetoall throughthepossessionofa churchwhereGodinthe splendourofHisThreePersonswoulddwellamong them.Throughworship, glorywouldbegiventoHis Name.

TheGodofIsrael,so terribletotheHebrews,had becomeforthemaGodof loveandmercy,especially inHisChurch,whereall whoaskedmightobtain whattheyimploredbythe graceandvirtueofthe Sacraments.

Howclearlywasthisfdre-

toldintheOldTestament, theindwellingPresenceof OurLordinthetabernacle soperfectlyadumbratedin theMessianictitleofEmmanuel,whichmeans"God withus,"bestowedbythe ProphetIsaias. Alsointheirdedication weretheyfortunate.Asin Esperance,whereOurLady waspatronessunderthe lovelytitleofstarofthe Sea(andindeedthenew churchlookedoutoverthe seatotheislandsbeyond), soinNorseman,St.Joseph, herlovingprotector,was invoked,andaspatronof UniversalChurchhe dintercedeconstantly them.

BISHOPGOODYurgedthe parishionerstocontinue inthespiritofgenerosity, whichwouldshinebefore allasasourceofinspiration. Unlesscharitypouredforth constantlyinpraiseofGod andthanksgiving,theheart ofmanmustshrivelandlose itsstrength.

Materialprogresswould dependuponspiritualincreaseandthustheirprayerfulgenerositywouldmake themworthyofblessingand reward.

Later,aftertheceremony, therewasabuffetentertainmentgivenbytheladieson theschoolverandah,where invitedguests,includingthe Hon.J.M.Cunningham, M.L.C.,werewelcomedby theCatholiccitizensof Norseman.

Theoldtwofoldclassificationofliturgicaldaysaccordingtorankandritehas beendiscarded.Nowfeast daysareofoneofthree classes.Thereisnolonger thedistinctionofthefeasts in"doubles"and"simples."

FatherParschdrewhisinspirationfronthisexperiencesasachaplainin WorldWarI. Duringhis servicewiththeAustroHungarianarmiesonthe easternfront,hewasdeeply movedbythevividinterest andferventparticipationof EasternRiteChristians, bothOrthodoxandCatholic, Hereturnedconvincedthat changesintheLatinRite liturgyandliberaluseofthe vernacularwereessentialif thepeopleweretorealise thevitalforceoftheMass andsacraments.

FatherParschseasfirst lookeduponbymanypersonsasbeinga"crank" whose"hobby"ofintroducingliturgicalinnovations wasnottobetakenseriously. Bythemid-twenties, however,hisreformmovementwaswellunderway. ItwasrecognisedasvaluablebymembersoftheHierarchyandsupportedby growingnumbersofpastors andlaymen.Hecarriedon hisworkmainitbyhiswritingratherthanbyorganisinglecturesandconferences.

TheAugustiniancanon wasanoutspokenadvocate ofbreviaryreform,forhim, thisofficialprayerbookof theChurchwas"apriceless anthology"of"truegrandeur." Butitisalso"a clericalCinderella"which mostpriestsrecite"without understandingitproperlymerelytofulfilltheirobligation,"hesaid. Longbeforetherewasany wordfromtheVaticanthat reformswouldbemade, FatherParschsaidthatthe Breviary"criesforreform andrevision."Inhisbook "TheBreviaryExplained" heexpressedthehopethat reformwouldsooncome.

FatherParsch'sliturgical workcametoavirtual standstillduringtheNazioccupation. Likenearlyall monasticcommunitiesin AustriatheKlosterneuburg canonswereevictedfrom theirmonastery. Itwas convertedintoamuseum anditsprintingplantwas confiscated.

Duringsevenyearsunder

Nazirule,theChurchin Austriahadtodealwithso manydesperatelyurgent problemsthatithadlittle timetoconsiderliturgical changes.Butaftertheliberationin1945theliturgicalmovementbecamestronggerthanever.Contactand understandingbetweenthe clergyandlaityhadgrown closerunderNazioppression, andthisprovedmosthelpfultotheexpansionofthe movement.

Itspopularityisevidentin thecontinuingdemandfor the-writingsofFather Parsch.Althoughhedied inMarch,1959,someofhis workshavebeenreprinted againandagain,andthe totalcirculationrunsinto hundredsofthousandsof copies. Anumberofhis Biblicalandliturgicalwritingshavebeentranslated intoforeignlanguages,includingJapaneseandChinese. FatherParschwasnotmusicallyinclined,buthehad thegoodfortuneofobtainingtheco-operationofan excellentmusicianandcomposer,VinzenzKoller. Mr. Kollercomposedgoodmelodiesforantiphonstobe sungbythechoirinGerman,andreplacedsomeof thepopularbutdefinite'snon-liturgicaltunesformerlyusedincongregational singing.Twootherfirst-

Apparently somebody suggestedrecentlyina committeemeetingofthe NationalUnion,theofficial organisationofthegovernment,thattheMoslemreligion(Islam)mightbea

Christianswhohavenotifiedthegovernmentthat theyaregivinguptheir ChristianFaithtobecome Moslems.EverywhereI heardthesamegeneralreasonsasexplanation:economicpressureandmarriage. SomeChristians,poverty stricken,findthattheycannotgetorholdagoodjob, orcannotgetpromotion,as Christians.Theygiveway tothisindirectpressureto becomeMoslems.

Othersfindanescape fromamarriagedifficulty inthefavouredtreatment giventoMoslems.AChristianmarriedman,tiredof hiswife,cangetadivorce here,ifhebecomesaMoslem.Hecanthenmarrya Moslemwoman.HisChristianwifehasnolegalprotectionorrecourseandcan beliterallyabandoned.The childrenarelegallyobliged togowiththeparentwho hasturnedMoslem.

Ontheotherhand,a Moslemwhowouldturn Christianwouldencounter heavysocialandeconomic penaltiesagainstwhichhe wouldhavenolegalpro-

basisforforeignpolicy. PresidentNasserdisagreed, saying:"Iftherewerean Islamicpact,aChristian pactandaBuddhistpact, etc.,therewouldbetoo manypacts Religion mustbekeptseparatefrom politics,sothatitcannotbe exploitedbyimperialistic powers."

Insistingthatthereisno discriminationonreligious grounds,ahighgovernment official,aMoslem,saidto me:"Wemustremember thatwhenthebombsand shellswerefallingonPort Said,theyfellonChristians andMoslemsalike."

Ontheotherhand,some governmenttrendsandpatternsimply,inspiteofthe constitution,thatIslamis theofficialreligionandthat Christiansdonotpossess thesamerightsasMoslems.

Iread,forinstance,that thebudgetfor1960-61providesagovernmentsubsidy of2,721,000Egyptianpounds (about£3,686,100)forAlAzharUniversityandits religiousinstitutes.AlAzharisanentirelyIslamic(Moslem)religiousinstitution,devotedtothetrainingofMoslemevangelists andscholarsforhomeand abroad.Thissubsidyis 400,000poundsmorethan lastyear's.

Oneoftheresolutions passedunanimouslybythe congressoftheNational Unionrecently,withPresidentNasser'sapproval,declared:"Carefulattention shouldbegiventoAl-Azhar asthegreatcentreofIslamicstudies,toenablethis greatinstitutiontocarry outitsimportantmission." Theresolutionsofthiscongressaretobeenactedas laws.

Thereisa17-member Cabinetofministersfor Egypt,theSouthernRegion oftheU.A.R.,butnoChristianhasaplaceinit.In thecentralCabinetforthe tworegions,thereisone Christian,theMinisterof Supply.ThereisoneChristianministerintheregional CabinetforSyria.

TheNationalAssembly wasconvokedrecentlyof memberschosenbythegovernmentfromalargernumberthathadbeenelected sometimeago.Egypt,the SouthernRegion,has400 membersintheassembly, butonly12ofthemare Christians.Thatis,fora regioninwhichChristians areabout16percentofthe populationtheChristian representationchosenby thegovernmentfortheNationalAssemblyisonly threepercent.Thisassemblyistodrawupthe permanentconstitutionas wellastopassordinary legislation.

TheUnitedArabRepublicisayoungstate.Itcannotbeexpectedtoavoid everymistakeortodissolve ancientprejudicesovernight.Ithasshowninitiativeandanewnessofapproachinotherrespects, however.Theordinaryobserverwouldthinkthatby nowitcouldtakemeasures toinsurethatitsChristian citizenswouldreceiveequal treatmentinpracticeas wellasinprinciple.

Althoughitishardwork,lifeonavineyardcanbepleasant.Mostpeoplehavenever experiencedsuchalifeanddonotknowthe greatresponsibilityonehasifoneownsa vineyard.

First,thereisthemachinery. Themostnecessary machinetohaveonavineyardisatractorwhichhelps thevigneronagreatdeal,for withoutittheoldfashioned waywouldbethehorse.

Thetractordoesthe ploughingofthesoilmuch morequicklyandsavesthe farmerdaysofhardwork.

Othernecessaryappliances are-atrailerwhichishitched ontothetractor;thegrapes arestackedoninboxesor tinsanddriventothesheds; differentscissorsandknives withwhichtoprunethe vinesanddiscsandploughs ofdifferentsorts.

Thegroundiscultivated inaboutSeptemberwhen therainshavejustgoneand thevinesarecoveredwith shoots. HAYHARARATasEsther emotedwell,butthefilm impressedmeasmainlya man'sfilm,withthewomen inthebackground,showing fidelity,loveandhope.

STEPHENBOYDasMessala,theRomantribune,was impressiveinhispower.He madeyouhatehimforwhat hecouldhavebeenandwhat heturnedouttobe.The sceneofhisdeathresulting fromthechariotracewas oneofthemostrealisticI haveeverseenonthescreen. Hatredevenindeathwas visibleinthepowerful scenewhichkeptthetheatre hushed.

mostentertainingofthe characters.The"shrewdold devil"spokemanywordsof worldlywisdominthepart thatheplayed.

Otheractorsbrieflyappearedfortheirchosenparts andthestorygradually reacheditsclimaxofthe chariotraceinonesense andthenthedeathofChrist inanother.

Thespectacleoftherace wasoneofmightyproportions.Therewasnosense ofsportsmanship,butthe willtowinbyanymeans. Thebrutalityoftheaffair andtheenmitybetweenBen HurandMessalawaswell portrayed.

Thevacillantandcunning PontiusPilate,admirably actedbyFRANKTIMING (Melbourne-born),beginsto bebroughtoutinhisfirst officialactasGovernor.

Religiously,thefilmcould inspireemotionandeven deepthought.

ThoughthefaceofChrist isnevershown,oneiseasily consciousoftheeffectofHis presenceonthepeoplewho beholdHim.Christnever speaksandthewholecoverageofthissceneisdone withreverenceandgood taste.

TheCrucifixionscenewas admirablycarriedoutfrom thewashingofPilate's handstotheawful,jarring joltoftheCrossdropping intotheholeintheground. Iwouldagreewithmost othercriticsinCatholic papersthattheapproachof thefilmtoreligiouslyinspiredscenessurpassesany otheroftheBiblicalspectaclesthathavebeenshown sofar.
