Somanysocialproblems concerningfamilylife, whicharetheconcernof churches,followinthewake ofmarriagelegislationthat itissurelynotpresumptuoustoexpectthatauthoritativeandrepresentative criticismbegiventhemost seriousconsideration.

Thepatternfollowedin thecaseoftheUniform DivorceBillwouldseemto bebasedontheaprioriassumptionsthatthetextbook theoriesofgoodlegislation andthepreservingofthe State'sownchoiceof groundsfordivorcemustbe absolutelyrespectedeven atthecostofsa-rificingthe principlesofaChristianity asprofessedbyanotable sectionofthecountry.

SadDevelopment

ThedevelopmentofDivorceLegislationsinceits inceptioninBritishLawin 1857hasbeenoneofcontinuoussimplificationand amplification.TheLaw makershave-apparently beenmoreconcernedwith fittingtheirlawstothe socialbehaviourofaminority,thatisindifferentto moralityorpublicopinion, thanwithanydesireto maintainthesoundmoral principlesofnationallife whichareourheritage.

Consequentlythelegislationhasfollowedtheconductofthefew,andinendeavouringtolegalisetheir conducthasledthewayin encouragingotherstofollowsuit.Whenpublic opinionandthelawdisapprovemanywillhesitateto bepioneersinflagrantmisconduct.Butwhenthese barriersareremovedthe publicreactionis,commonly,toacceptthisasapprovalandsettheirstandards accordingly.Andsothe progress.Alwaysaminoritywillgotheirownperverseway,rightlyorwrongly,andthelawkeptchasing togivesuchcesspoolsan exterioroflegalrespectability.

InW.A.thefirstDivorce Actwaspassedin1863with thepromulgationofthe MatrimonialCausesCode;in 1948thegroundsofdivorce reachedatotalof14.When onerecallsthattheoriginal DivorceActof1857in GreatBritain,whichconcernedthepermittingof divorceonlyontheground ofadultery,waspassedonly afterlongdebateandclose votingonecanseehowthe

violationofabasicprincipleofChristianmarriage ledthewaytoevermore simpledivorceinacountry thatreceivedfromherits legaltradition.

OurOpinionFirm

TheCatholicopinionon thisquestionisnowwhat italwayshasbeenandwhat italwayswillbe-thata validmarriageisalifelong bondgivingapermanent maritalstatustobothpartieswhichcanceaseonly withthedeathofoneparty. ThisstatusbyChristian standardsisnotmerelya legalrecognitionbythe Statebutastatussealedby God.

ThevoiceoftheCatholic Churchhasbeenignoredin spiteofitscontinualprotestationsagainstthisinroadonbasicChristianlaw andthesuccessesofthe 19thcenturysecularists havecarriedonintothe 20thcenturywithanever moreclear-cutbreakfrom the18centuriesoldChristianideaofmarriage.ConsequentlyaCatholicopinion onanyDivorceBillmust firstandforemostbearestatementofunequivocal oppositiontodivorceonany groundwhatsoever.

Inadditionitwillspecificallyopposeanytendency tofacilitatedivorcebythe additionoffurthergrounds. Hopingatleastthatits voicemaybeheardandthe numbersofdivorcessomewhatlessened.

When,therefore,theUniformDivorceLawBillwas putbeforetheFederalParliamenttheChurchagain raiseditsvoiceinopposition andtheAustralianHierarchystatedtheirposition quiteclearlyintheir1959 PastoralLetteronMarriage.

BulldozedBill

TheBillwasopposedon generalprinciplesandspecificallybecausetheresult oftheBillwouldbetoincreasethegroundsfordivorcethroughoutthenation.

Admittedlyforthefirst timewedidhavelegislation thatincludedpositiveprovisionforMarriageGuidance Councilsandthisaspectof theActdeservesthehighestpraise.Thefactremainshowever,thatin everyState,exceptW.A., therewouldbemore groundsthaneverbefore allowed.Ifoneconsiders marriagefromapurely secularpointofviewitis atleastpossibletounderstandthereasoningthat movesagovernment,indifferenttoDivineLaw,to grantaninnocentparty meansofprotectionby divorceagainstcruelty, adulteryandthelike.

Bethatasitmay,this Billintroducesaground thatdepartsfromtheprtn-

ilyandmarriagecannot preventthemarriagebeing dissolved.

Aninnocentpartybylaw maybevictimisedinthe interestoftheerringparty andfriend!Thisgroundin effectintroducesdivorceby consent.Withthisweshall seeabolishedthelastshred ofrealpermanenceinthe marriagecontractsofAustralia.

RequiemMassforMrs.OksanaStepanovnaKasenkina,64,whoseleaptofreedom fromawindowoftheSovietconsulateinNew Yorkin1948wasaninternationalsensation, wasofferedinGesuChurchinMiami,Florida, U.S.A.

The Russianschool teacherdiedonJuly24of aheartailment.Shehad beenlivinginadowntown Miamihotelfornearlya yearundertheassumed nameofMaryKamitaundertheprotectionofthe U.S.StateDepartment.She WasburiedinOurLadyof MercyCemeteryhere.

Mrs.Kasenkinadisclosed thatherplanstocometo theUnitedStatessucceeded whenshewasappointedan instructorforthechildren ofSovietofficialsofthe NewYorkconsulateandof theSovietdelegationtothe UnitedNations. In1948shewasordered toreturntoRussiaand passageforherwasbooked onashipscheduledtoleave NewYorkonJuly31.On thedayshewastodepart, shewasaidedbynon-communistfriendsandescaped fromtheconsulatetothe ToystoyFoundations'Reed FarmatValleyCottage, N.Y.

TheRussianconsulate officialschargedshehad beendruggedandkidnapped. Consulateattaches cametothefarmandpersuadedMrs.Kasenkinato returntotheconsulate. Later,attheconsulate,she toldnewspapermenofthe "kidnap"-astorythat, sheadmittedlater,shewas instructedtotellbySoviet AmbassadorAlexanderS. Panyushkin,whosubsequentlywasorderedto leavethiscountrybythe U.S.Government.

OnAugust12,1948,Mrs. Kasenkinamadeherfamousleaptofreedomfroma third-storeywindowofthe consulatetoavoidbeingreturnedtoRussia.Awire brokeherfall,butshewas hospitalisedforsometime withinternalinjuriesand walkedwithaslightlimp fortherestofherlife.

Theaimoftheretailersis"topubliciseSt.Valentine's Daywiththeobjectiveofbuildingtrade."So,itappears, anotherChristianfeastistobedebasedforpurposesof commercialism.ItwilljoinEasterandChristmasas secularbeanosutterlydevoidofanyreligioussignificance.Evennaturalaffectionshavenotbeenableto avoidthetaintofmoney-grubbingaswitnessesthe poorestateofMothers'DayandFathers'Day.Itwould appearthatnothinginlifeistoosacredtobeabovethe graspinghandsofmaterialism.

Inassociationwithreligion,acertainamountofcommercialism,ifnotstrictlynecessary,isseeminglyunavoidable.ThusthereareCatholicrepositorieswhich sellobjectsofpiety.Itisnotpossibleordesirableto enterintothemotivesofothers,butitcannotbe excludedthatsuchmerchantsmaybeasmuchconcerned tofosterpietyastomakemoney.Inanycasethe conductoftheirbusinessesismarkedbyreverenceand dignityandmoreovertheirwaresaremadeavailable inresponsetoman'ssacramentalnature.Ifweexclude theiconoclastsandthepeoplewhodreadthreedimensionalrepresentationsandcertainBiblicalfundamentalists,itisundeniablyaninstinctinmantoexpress hisspiritualandemotionaltrendsexternally.

Itisopenly, blatantlyandunashamedlyinaidoftheshekels.What isoddaboutthesecularrevivalofthecultofSt. Valentineisthatitresurrectsacustomwhichtodayis hardlymorethanamemory.AsearlyasChaucer'sday itwaspopularlybelievedthatthebirdsbegantopair onSt.Valentine'sDay.Thesendingof"valentines" wasonlyanaturaldevelopmentofthisquaintbelief. ThethirdchaoticelementintheCongomessarisesout ofthethreatsofindependentactionagainstKatanga emanatingfromtheSoviet,GhanaandGuinea.That groupingismostsignificant.SekouToureiscompletely intheCommunistpocketsincehehasbasedhiswhole economicorderonRedeconomicassistance.Ghanais playingadeviousgamefromwhichflirtingwithCommunismisnotexcluded.

Theyear1649wasaverynotableoneinthelifeofSt.VincentdePaul,foronSt.Patrick'sDaythatyearhebarelyescapedfromdrowning.

Thatyearhewasinthemaelstromofhischaritable activities,whichwerenowintensifiedinthecityofParis anditsneighbouringdistricts.AftertheTreatyof Westphaliain1648broughtanend,onpaper,tothe ThirtyYearsWar,conflictdevelopedinthemid-winter betweentheCourtandMazarin,thePrmeMinister,on theonehand,andParliamentandthenoblesonthe other;itwasthecivilwaroftheFronde,whichdragged onforfouryears.MazarindecidedthatParisshould bestarvedintosubmissionbytheroyaltroops.The cityanditssuburbswereovercrowdedbyrefugeesfrom thelatewar,andthoughquickmeasuresweretaken forthecityitself,theouterareasweresoonfeelingthe pinchofhunger.Thearmystoleallavailablefood, grain,cattleandhorses;nothingwasleftinthecountryside-therewaspillageandplunderonthehigways, thecoachesandcommercewereatastandstill.Paris, thathadbeentheheartforthestreamofcharityforso manyyears,wasinstateofsiegeandcouldnotcontinue togiveassistanceoutside.

TheQueenRegent,AnneofAustria,hadfledthecity. Afterdueconsideration,Vincentdeterminedtoapproach herandMazarintoendthetroubles.Thoughasingle priest,Vincentwastheoutstandingfigureinthecity, andhehadclosecontactwiththeQueeninvarious concerns,sohethoughthecouldinfluenceherinbringingaboutpeace.

HeleftParissecretlyatdaylight,forifeitherside knewhehadgonetotheCourt,hewouldhavebeen discreditedforpartisanship.Herodeoutonhorseback accompaniedbyhislay-brothersecretary.Afteran hour'sridetheywerearrestedinClichy,wherethe citizens,whohadbeenplunderedthepreviousdayby Germancavalry,hadplacedroad-blocks.Fortunately, someonewhorememberedhimastheformerparish priestoftheplace,recognisedhim,andhewasallowed togoonhisway.Anotherbarriertheymetwhenthey foundtheRiverSeinefloodedandpartlycoveringthe trafficbridge.ThoughVincentwasnotaswimmer, trustinghishorseandGod'sProvidence,heplunged boldlyinandcrosssedsafely.Afterafive-hourride thetwotravellerscametotheQueen'sresidence.It wasabravejourneyforamanof69years.

ImmediatelyhewasadmittedtotheQueen'spresence, andurgedhertodismissMazarinfromhispostasa steptorestoringpeace,buttonoavail.Hewent straighttoMazarinhimselfwiththesameproposal, begginghimtothrowhimselfintothesealikeJonas,to calmthestorm;butitwasinvain.Nextdayhetold thelay-brothercompanionthathisfailurewasdueto hisspeakingtooforciblyandtooharshly,andthathe hadneverseenanygoodgotbythatmethodanytime.

Now,lesthebethoughttohavegonetobetraythe city,prudencedirectedthatheshouldnotreturnto Paris;so,withasafe-conduct,hesetofftovisitsomeof hispriestsintheWesternprovizercesandbidehistime. HepassedontowardsOrsigny,wherehehadafarm whichusedtosupplytheMotherHouseinPariswith mostofitsprovisions.Herehefoundthattheplacehad beenpillagedandmostofthestockandstoresstolen; soheturnedhishorsetowardsFreneville,wherehehad anotherproperty.NewsthattheheadhouseatParishad beensackedandlootedfromgarrettocellar.andtaken

overasbilletsforsixhundredsoldiers,andthataband ofsoldierswasonhisheelsinhispresentplace,moved himtoquickaction.Heavymid-wintersnowwason thegroundandrainfollowed,buttheoldman,backin hisboyhoodagain,musteredhisflockof240sheep, salvagedfromOrsigny,andwithhisbridleonhisarm andastickinhishandtrudgedoffintothesnowwith themandhistwohorses.Whenthesheepknockedup, hehandedthemovertoafriendtokeeponherproperty, androdeontotheSeminaryatManstohisconfreres.

Afortnightlaterhesetoutwithapriestcompanion forAngers.FordingtheRiverLoire,hishorsestumblc,1 andfell,throwinghimintotheswollenriver.His comr.anionwasabletogivehimahandquicklyand bringhimashorefromtherushingflood.Itwasaclose call,andherealisedit.Afterwards,whenthispriest wasinsomegreattrouble,hewroteSt.Vincent:"Ionce savedyourbodyfromdeath,doyounowsavemysoul."

TowhichVincentgratefullyreplied;"Comehereand youwillbereceivedwithopenarms."

Afterbeingpulledoutofthewater,Vincentwas takentoanearbycottage,andwhilsthesatinfrontof thefirewaitingforhisclothestodry,theownertold himofhisworries,especiallyofaherniathatbothered him."Iwillsendyouabelttogiveyourelief."Vincent promisedhim,andonhisreturntoParishisfirstact wastosendonthebelt,withaletterofthanksenclosed.

TravellingontoRennes,hehadtocrossasmall bridgenearawindmill.Hishorseshiedattheturning wheelanditsshadowsand,backingaway,nearlyfell intothepoolbelow.Vincentmanagedtocontrolthe animal,butputhisescapedowntothehandofProvidence.WhenhereachedRennes,hewastoldthaton accountofhisdealingswiththeCourt,hewasnot welcome,andmightbearrested.Healsooverhearda remarkpassedangrilyinthetravernwherehehadbeen recognisedtotheeffectthat"MonsieurVincentwillbe verymuchsurprisedwhenhegetsabi.flletinhishead afewmilesoutontheroad."However,hewasunmolestedand,throughrainandfloods,wentonto Nantes.

ByMayhehadreachedthetownofRichelieu,where amessagefromtheQueenaskedhimtoreturntoParis. Hewasworriedandwearyand,afterfivemonthsof travelinwintryconditions,interspersedwithhis dangerousadventures,hewassickandseizedwitha severechill.Hisstategavecauseforanxiety,sohis friendandprovider,theDuchessofAguillon,senta carriageandpairallthewayfromParistobringhim home.Nottohurtherfeelings,heconsentedto inthisstyle,arrivingbackinParistwomonthsbefore theQueenherself.Ithadbeenabusy,anxiousand severejourneyofahalfayearforamannearlyseventy yearsofage.

TwoYearsOfProfoundAgony

WhattheQueenwantedofhimwasnevermade known,butVincentwasreadytosharethegeneral miseryofthecity.Bytheendof1649thecivilwar wasatitsheight.In1650hisprioryofSt.Lazaruswas sackedbyConde'stroops,andwasthereafterprotected byaguardofveterans.Vincentspentweekstryingto negotiatebetweenthepartiesand,asafinalmove,wrote toPopeInnocentXtobeghimtointerveneagain. "MostHolyFather,thereare24hoursintheday, andhewhohasnotsucceededonce,mayobtainbetter successbyafreshattempt."Hedescribedthesituation: "TheRoyalFamilyistornbydissensions;thepeople splitintofactions;thecitiesandprovincesafflictedby civilwar;thevillages,hamletsandtownsoverthrown, ruinedandburned;tillersofthesoilcannotreaporsow. Soldiersgivethemselveswithimpunitytoallmanner ofexcess.Thepeopleareexposednotonlytoactsof rapineandbrigandage,butalsotomurderandallsorts oftorture.Suchoftheinhabitantsofthecountryas havenotperishedbytheswordaredyingofhunger; thepriests,whoaresparednomorethantherest,are inhumanlytreatedandtorturedandputtodeath. Virginsaredishonoured,andevennunsthemselvesare exposesdtotheirlicentiousnessandrage;thetemples ofGodareprofaned,plunderedanddestroyed ."

However,bytheendof1652thedisturbanceswere quieteneddownthroughgeneralwearinessandfrustration.TheyoungKingLouisXIVwasbackinParis, Mazarinwasexiledforatime,andageneralamnestyproclaimedforallwhohadtakenpartintheFronde. ButtheillsofParisandsuburbsremainedbeyond description.Beforethebarbariansoldiery,crowdshad fledtothecapital,withtheircattleandtheirhandcarts loadedwiththeirgoods.Corpseslayscatteredbythe roads,carcassesofanimalsdeadfromhungerand fatigue,thebodiesofbabieslyingonthebreastsof theirlifelessmothers.Oneconventheld240refugee nuns;contemporaryreportssaythatthestreetsofParis had100,000peoplebegging.Sicknessdeveloped,andin thesummerthereweretenthousanddeathsamonth.

Vincentstrovetogivesomeaidtotheunfortunate. Firstitwasbyprayer,"toliftupourhandstoGodto begthedivinemercy."ThreemembersofthecommunityatSt.Lazarusfastedeveryday,anactof penancewhichwentonfornineyears;apriestoffered Massforpeaceandordereachday.

Detailedorganisingwashisstrongpoint.Firsthe gottheLadiesoftheConfraternityofCharity,who againusedtheprintedleafletsdescribingtheillstobe remedies,tocollectmoneyandgood.Forthemultitudesafirstaidwasthesoup-kitchen.TheDaughters ofCharityattheirMotherHousefed2,300personsa day,andintheparishofSt.Paul,fivethousandaday. Eachparishgatheredgoodsofallsorts-medicine, clothes,food,furniture,tools,books,equipmentfor

churchesandhospitals;fromthepresbyteriesthesewere deliveredtothehomeofoneoftheLadies,thencarted tothedepotsinthestrickenareas,anddistributed.

Astaffwasrequiredtohandleallthis-surgeons, nurses,gravediggers,ahostofinvestigators,distributors andclergy.Allthereligiousorderstookoverparticular suburbsandtownstocarefor.St.Vincentlostseveral priestsandBrotherswhocontracteddiseaseattheir ministry.TheDaughtersofCharitylostasmanyin theirhospitalsanddepots,asmartyrstocharity.

Missionsweregiveninallthenearbytowns,Vincent himselftakinghisplacewiththepreachers.TheVisitationNunsgatheredhundredsofrefugeenunsintotheir Parisconvents.Numbersofgirlsinmoraldangeron thestreetswerebroughttoinstitutionsandtaught spinningandweavingandsuitablemeansofearninga living.Itwas1655beforethepestilence,famineand miseryhadfullyceased.

InthesedistressingtimesVincentwasalwaylooking ahead.Whathehaddonewasfinished,buttherewas norest;therewasyetmoreinfrontofhim,althoughhe wasnowfeelingtheweightofhis75years.Whata capacityhehadforappreciatingthesufferingsand discomfortofothers!Whatapowerforadaptingand co-ordinatingremedies!Asteptoaidanafflicted persontookhimonamile;thehandoutstretchedin goodwasneverwithdrawnwhereneedexisted.He roamedagiant'sfieldofaction,andwasalwayspresent atthemostcriticalspot.Nomiseryordistresswas unkncwntohimorwithoutrealrelief.Thecharityof Christ,hisesteemandloveofmen,wasthefireinhis soulandtheenergythatneverflagged,teachingcharity toothersandleadingtheminitsservice,generating enthusiasmandzealinwell-doing.

Hewasalwaysthesimple,hopeful,trustingpriest, strivingtobeallthingstoallmenforthesakeofJesus Christ.

ThisFrenchfoundation spreadtoGermanyand Czechoslovakiaandtheyear 1860sawthecongregation inHungarywiththe MotherHouseinKalocsa. In1926thefirstSisters wentfromHungaryto China,devotingthemselves .tomissionarywork.Inthis lattercountry,theyrecruitedChineseSisterstohelp them.Unfortunatelyinthe post-warcrisistheseHungarianSisterswereexpelled fromcommunistChina.The nativeSistersremained.

ThisHungariancommunityreceivedawelcomehospitalityfromHisGracethe Archbishopin1951,andestablishedaresthomefor ladiesat14Heytesbury-rd., Subiaco,wheretheyhave madeawidecircleof friendsinW.A.Thereisa similar,smallerresthome atLesmurdie(VillaMaria).

ForawhiletheseSisters conductedhostelsinGoulburnaridSydneybutallare nowbackintheWest.Some oftheirnumbercareforthe boysatClontarfBoys' Town.

Thesesubjectsshouldprovequiteaseriousaddition toanyconference.Theycouldperhapsbebasedona preliminaryquestion:WhyCatholicwomen'sorganisations?Withthisanswerinhand,therestshouldfollow automatically.

Anotheraspectoftheletterwasthequestionofhow togetsomememberofeachorganisationtoRomefor theJubilee.Unlessamemberisalreadycontemplating takingatripnextyear,thiscouldbeprohibitiveonthe costanglealone.

Severalschemesweresuggestedwhichwouldhave theultimateobjectiveofanorganisationbeingableto sayattheend-"Well,wegotsomebodythere!"

Oneschemewastocalculatetheexactcostfromyour ownplacetoRome,workoutthecostpermile,then strive,withfunctions,donations,etc.,togetthecostof onemile,two,five,ten,20andsoon."Manygrains makeabighill."

Finallyeachorganisationwasaskedtomakeprepara- withintheirownstructurestofittinglycelebrateand takeanactivelocalpartintheJubilee.

Asthenameimplied,the Concertwasagayromp throughthelastdecadeand thewords"gay"and"romp" canbeusedwithoutany reservationwhatsoever.From thiscritic'spointofview, theconcertwasasocialsuccessforthefollowingreasons: Itstartedontime(alas! onecannotsaythesamefor allamateurproductions.) Intimacywiththeaudience wasestablishedatthevery beginningi.e.trickoverture, novelopeningchorus.

Teamworkbetweenartists, stagecrewandorchestraprovidedsmoothrunningand noneofthose"gaps"betweenactswhichareasource ofdiscomforttoanaudience. Thecastappearedtobeenjoyingthemselvesasmuch astheaudience.

Theconcertgotawaytoa brightstartwith"Sunny SideUp"followedbyanunusualfashiondisplaybythe girlsentitled"Meetthe1950 Girls."Nicelyperformed, girls,butcouldwehavea fewmoresmilesplease.

Agreatdealoftheshow's successwasduetotheefforts ofBasilWalkerwhosecomedyactswereinterspersed throughouttheshow."Rest Cure"wasariot,while"Tell MeaStory"inwhichhe pairedwithCarlCarton cameaveryclosesecond.

Thechoruswasbrightand tunefulwithperhapsthe girls'chorus"MyHeartand 1"ashadeaheadoftherest.

Allsketcheswerewell donewithseveraloutstandingcharacterimpressions. Actinghonoursamongthe girlsgoto;JeanPitcher, -ElseBranchi,TerryFlynn, LesleyBranigan,Sylvia Lynchandalittlegemfrom MargaretBraniganasacrippledgirl.HoweverIthink theproducererredinnot givingtheaudienceanidea beforehandastotheplot. Someofusintheaudience wereuncertainuntilnearthe endastothissketch'sdramaticcategory.

Amongtheboysthebest sketchperformancescame fromCarlCarom,Peter Fleay,RockyIsaia,John Hansen,JohnBates,George MurrayandLesterGreen. Minorpartswerenumerous andallperformedwell.

GailChipperdelightedus withtwodancingroutines andIwasonlysorrywedid notseeherperformsome more. Pianoaccordionist, EmmaBores,theonlyinstrumentalistintheshow,gave asensitiveandcharming displayafterconqueringinitialnervousness.

SopranoDorothyMoss chosetwomusicalcomedy songs,"IlitintheSun"and "ICouldHaveDancedAll Night."Bothwererendered sweetlyandreceivedloudapplause.Twocharminglasses,AnneandFrancesOts combinedwellfor"Sisters," whileRockyIsaiahailusall inthepalmofhishandwith abrilliantinterpretationof "Volare"andanothersong whichunfortunatelywasnot listedontheprogramme.

Bothpianists,Margaret BraniganandRosemary Treacyentertainedwitha pianosoloeach,"Terry's Theme"and"CanadianSunset."Welldonegirls!Jock Callaghangaveaverycreditableperformanceondrums. HoweverIthoughtherather drownedtheboy'schorusin "RockAroundtheClock"

Mozart's'Paris'*mphony, withitsmostHadynesque opening,wasadelightfulsurpriseintheincisiveviolin playing.FarnsworthHall seemstohavesomethingof anaffinityfortheearlier Mozartsymphonies.Youmay rememberthattheseason beganwiththelittleG Minor.
