In1952heenteredthe juniorateoftheBlessed SacramentFathersinBowral,N.S.W.,andwasprofessedin1955,takingfinal vowsin1958.

OnreturningtotheSeminaryofChristtheKingat LowerTemplestowe,Victoria,afterordination,for completionofhis4thyear oftheology,thethenFather KellywillgotoSt.Francis' Church,Melbourne,fora finalyearofstudy.

Deceased'slastweeks werespentatSt.Joseph's Hospital,-Biaton.

BorninCo.Clare,Eire,in 1872,deceased,accompanied byayoungersister,thelate MotherM.Ursula,lefther homelandin1899,cameto AustraliaandenteredSt. Joseph'snovitiate,Fremantle,wheretheywere professedin1901.

MotherEmile'sfirstmissionfieldwasNortham, whereshetaughtforsome yearsendearingherselfby hergenialpersonalityto pupilsandpeoplealike. Ofaveryhappydispositionandawarm-hearted manner,shehadapowerfor goodandinfluencedallwho cametoher.

AftersomeyearsinNortham,shewastransferredto Fremantleandtaughtinthe schoolsinEastFremantle andBeaconsfield. ThencameAlbanyand Mary'sMount,Kalamunda, andin-eachofthesehouses MotherEmilieheldtheoffice ofsuperior.Anothertransfer-thistimebacktoNorthamassuperior.

Finally,MotherEmilie wasreleasedfromofficeand spentherremainingyearsin retirementinFremantle.

Alwayshappyandcontented,MotherEmilieedifiedaftherSisters,especially byhergreatspiritofprayer, longvisitstotheBlessed Sacramenteachdayand thousandsofejaculatory prayers-infact,herlips seemedtobealwaysmoving inprayer.Anylittleactof

charityforanotherwasvery willinglyperformed.

Herbrother,thelate FatherP.Walsh,diedsome yearsagoinSydney;her sister,MotherM.Kevin,is superiorattheGoodShepherdConvent,Boronia,Victoria.

Twonephews,FatherJ. Walsh,ofDonnybrook, WA.,andFatherW.Walsh, Deepdene,Victoria,and theirtwosisters,SisterM. SacredHeart(Fremantle) andSisterM.Alphonsus (Northam),aswellasa niece,SisterM.Patricia (GoodShepherdConvent, Abbotsford),surviveher.

PatwasaveryenthusiasticleaderinthePalmyra groupforabout3yearsand herterrific"never-give-up" spiritwasnoticedbyall. Sowecanconfidentlysay that,Patwillbeoneofthe bestinthenewlifethat liesaheadforher.

RedStrengthInJapanMayMenaceAsia

JapanandCubamaybeviewedassymbolsofthe two-prongedintentofCommunistpolicyinAsiaand SouthAmerica.OfthesetwotheJapanesesituation isbyfarthemoreportentous.ForifJapanwasthe firstnationtoexperiencethepracticalhorrorsofatomic warfarefromtheAmericans,itemergedwithitsmainlandindustriesvirtuallyuntouchedintoa"soft"peace thatoughttohaveearnedtheabidingmemory.of gratitude.

Japan'spost-warindustrialexpansionhasbeenprodigious,makingChina's"forwardleap"looklikean "arthriticshuffle,"toborrowaphrasefrom"Time." Itwouldbeamatterofprofoundconcerntothis countryshouldtheAmericandefencelinebeforced backfromJapantoPearlHarbour.Itwouldvirtually isolatetheU.S.fromherstaunchanti-Redalliesin Formosa,SouthKoreaandSouthVietnam.Itseffect uponthemoraleoftheneutraloruncommittednations wouldbefatefuloncetheybecameconvincedthatno reliancecouldbeplacedonAmericanaidintimeof trouble.TheywouldundoubtedlylooktoRedChina andcomewithinitsorbit.

Before6a.m.thefollowingmorning,Iwasonthe bridewithCaptainJardineaswepassedLacrosse IslandandenteralCambridgeGtrlf.

ItwasonthisislandthatLouisdeRougemont,in thenineties,hadsomeofthoseweirdexperiencesof his,suchasridingturtlesandthelike-sographically describedinhistalesofpersonaladventure.

Iwasquiteinterestedtoseeallthehazardstobe avoided,andthemanychangesofcourserequiredto negotiatethis50milesofnarrowpassageupthemuddy

watersoftheGulf.Inthechartroomonthisand subsequentoccasionsIsawputtogoodeffectvarious navigationalaids-theradarscreen,theechosounder depth-detector,gyrocompassandrangefinder.

"IronMike,"auto-pilot,steeredtheshiptillwellinto theGulf,whenthe"mudpilot"tookoverforthefinal stagesoftheapproach.

Aidedbyapowerfulincomingtide,wedrewalongsidetheWyndhamjettyat8a.m.,havingretardedour watchesanhourandahalfduringthenighttofallinto linewithstandardWesternAustraliantime.

Wyndhamisanoddtown,withapopulationofless thanonehundredduringthewetseason,increasigto aboutfivehundredinthedry.Thereisreallyonlyone street,whichtraversesthestripoflandsqueezedbetweenAlbanyHillandtheharbourshores.

Sonarrowisthisstripthatthewatersideblocksrun intothemangroveswamps,whileonthetop-side,the blocksforcetheirwayupthesteep,ruggedsideof AlbanyHill,whichtowersabruptlytoaheightof475 feet,overshadowingthescene.

Thejettyisamilefromthetownproper,oppositethe meatworks,whichliesclusteredaroundthefootofthe Bastion,abluffof1,068feet.

AfavouritechallengeissuedbyCaptainJardineto passengerswhiletheshipliesinportistoclimbthe Bastion,andsocompensateforanyundueinactivityin thecabins,whichtheship'sefficientair-conditioning tendstoencourage.

ThreetofourhundredmencomefromPertheach yeartostaffthemeatworks,forthesix-monthkilling season,andreturnsouthagainduringthewet.

Lyingclosetothewharfisthesubmergedhullofthe "Koolama,"originallysunkwhilelyingalongside,havinglimpedintoportfromCapeLondonderry.

AttheCape,aftersufferingbombingfromJapanese air-raiders,thedamagedvesselhadminorrepairsdone, andmembersofthecrewreceivedfirst-aidfromthe priests,brothersandnativesatthenearbyKalumburu BenedictineMission.

Thesunkenvesselwaslaterraisedbysalvageworkers,but,floatingtothesurfacesoonerthanexpected andcaughtbyapowerfulout-goingtide,itbrokeits moorings.swungawayfromthewharfandkeeledover againintothemudharbour-bed.

Inthispositiontheill-fatedshipstillliestoday,not howeverundulyinterferingwiththeapproachestothe wharf.Coveredbyatleasttenfeetofwater,evenat thelowesttide.itslargemassmakesitspresencefelt solelybythewhirlinthetidalcurrentsastheysweep past.

Abuilt-upcausewayacrossthemud-flatslinksthe jettywiththetown.OverthisIwastakenbyDesGee, theproprietoroftheWyndhamhotel,toofferMassfor thetownspeople.

AsthereisnoresidentpriestinWyndhamyet(oneis expectedsoon),MassiscelebratedonlyonthoseoccasionswhenaPallottinemissionaryvisitsthetown, eitherfromtheisolatedmissionstationofBalgo,40 milesawayintheinterior,orfromtheportsofDerby orBroome,furtherdownthecoast.

Inaborrowedcar,Idriveoutthreeorfourmiles towardstheaerodrome,whereanewresidentialsiteis makingitsappearance,anddrovesomeofthepeople fromtherebackforMass.

Returningtotheship,whereseverallocalfamilies wereembarking,IinspectedtheimprovementsinprogressonthewharfbeingmadebytheGovernment DepartmentofHarboursandRivers.

Whencompleted,thewharfwillbelinkedtothe shoreateitherend,permittingtrainsandothertraffic topassinacircularloop,greatlyfacilitatingloading operations.Wesailedat10.30a.m.

KALUMBURU

NextmorningwepassedtheentrancetoKalumburu Mission.TwiceayearoneoftheStateshipscallsin heretodischargeacargoofroutinemissionsupplies.

Itseemedratherodd,aftertakingofffromDarwin airportat7a.m.,tobetoldontouchingdownatKalumburuthatthetimewasafewminutesBEFORE7a.m. Ofcourse,theexplanationwassimplythatDarwin time(SouthAuStraliantime)isanhourandahalf aheadofWesternAustraliantime,andithadtakenjust under90minutestomakeourflight.

WemetsimilarconfusionwhenspeakingtoDarwin Radioat4.30p.m.(W.A.time).Wesaid"Goodafternoon,"andDarwinrepliedpolitely,"Goodevening,"as itwas6p.m.Darwintime.

BenedictinemonksfromNewNorciasetupamission inthedistrictin1908,knownastheDrysdaleRiver Mission.In1936themissioncentrewastransferredto anewsiteabout30milesfromtheoriginalpositionand renamedKalumburu.

WithoutdelayIclimbedthegangway,andsharpon thehalf-hour,leaningovertheship'srail,Isawmy friendsandthewharfmoveaway.

Thediesel-driven,air-conditioned,3,000-ton"Koojarra,"oneofthelatestWestAustralianStateships, lostnotimeinroundingWestPointattheharbour entrance,andwewereonourwayaroundtheWest coast,pastPointCharleslighthouse.

However,aswecruiseddowntheharbour,Ihadtime topickoutthedistinctiveoutlineoftheCathedral's parabolicarchestoweringintothebluetropicalsky abovethetreetopsontheskyline.

Passingquiteclose,wehadagoodviewofthe "BritishMotorist,"sunkbyJapanesebomberson February19,1942,andafewmonthsagoraisedbythe FujitaSalvageCompany,aJapanesefirmof38years salvageexperience.

Fourthousandtonsofmudwerepumpedfromthe "BritishMotorist"beforeshewasrefloated.Offices, sleepingaccommodationandagalleyforthesalvage crewhavesincebeenerectedonthe10,000-tontanker, whichnowactsasmothershipforthesalvagefleet;the previousmothership,"SeizanMaru,"havingreturned toJapanwith300tonsofscrapasballast.

Thebig-range(upto28ft.),fast-movingtides,and deepmudoftheharbourbed,aswellasdark,murky waters,makethewreck-salvageoperationatoughone.

InMiami,aCubanChristianDemocraticMovement inExilewasorganised.EarlierinJunethemovement announcedthatithadsuspendeditsactivitiesinCuba because"onlytheCommunistpartymaycarryoutfully andunimpededitspropagandaandactivity.'

Declaringthatacommunistregimeis"fightingand undermining thedemocraticandspiritualinstitutionsoftheCubanpeople,"thestatementissuedbythe movementinexilesaiditwillworkforafree,democraticandChristianCuba.

InMexicoCitytheDemocraticRevolutionaryFront ofCuba-towhichtheChristianDemocraticgroupbelongs-releasedasimilarstatement.

ItaccusedtheCastrogovernmentoffollowing "grosslymaterialistic"policies.Toemphasisethem,it said"thisreignofterrorhaseradicatedthenameof Godfromthepreambleoftheconstitutionof1940."

Usingtheslogan"God,CountryandFreedom,"the crusadealsocalledfortheoverthrowof"theRed tyrannyofCastro"andtherestorationofthe1940constitution.

TheChristianDemocraticmanifestosaidthatCuba's problemhasbecomeahemisphereproblemandcalled onotherAmericangroupsforaid.

"TodayCubaisunfortunatelythefirstbattlefieldof the(Red)forcesthatarefightingforpossessionofthe Americancontinent,"itsaid."Whatishappeningin Cubaisonlythebeginning.Itstragedycanandwill involvethewholecontinent."

WhenCastrofirstcametopowerinJanuary,1959, thestatementsaid,theChristianDemocratssupported him.But,thestatementcontinued,assoonasthe regimewassolidlyinpower,itbrokeitsword.

PRESSFREEDOMwaspromised,butonebyoneall paperscriticaloftheregimeweresilenced.the ChristianDemocratsnoted.

ECONOMICIMPROVEMENTwaspromised,"but thegovernmentwitharbitraryenforcementsand anddemagogicalviolenceruinedthebasesofproduction,causingafinancialcollapse."

HUMANRIGHTSweretobeprotected,but"today anybodycanbeimprisonedwithouttrialorpublicity,justbythewordofaninformer."

Thegeometricdesignsarcprobablythemostdifficult toproduce.TheyoftenarecopiesofPersiancarpetsor elaboratetapestries.Greatcareisrequiredtoachieve thelinedetail,andeachswirlinglineandcurvehasto beoutlinedwithblackearthfurthedisigntobeclear inallitsintricacy. Asthepetalsarelaidonthestreet.menwith mechanicalwatertanksontheirbacksconstantlykeep theflowersfreshwithaveryfinespray.Thisprevents thepetalsfromblowingaway.

SovietRussia,whileofficiallyrecognisingtheChinese NationalistgovernmentinNanking,wasobviouslyin closecontactwiththeChinesecommunistregimein Harbin.TheSoviethammer-and-sickleflagflewover theofficesoftheTungPeiErhPao(North-EastDaily), theofficialChinesecommunistpaper.

HarbinwasapartlyRussiancity.Manyoftheboys _VendingtheSt.Nicholasschoolbelongedtorefugee samiliesthathadfledtoHarbinaftertheRussian revolutionin1917.Alargenumberofthesefamilies hadtakenSovietpassportsduringthedaysofhopeful illusionthatfollowedthewar'sendin1945.Chinese boysalsoattendedtheschool.Somehighcommunist officials,RussianandChinese,chosetheSt.Nicholas schoolfortheirsons.

IfoundtheMarianFathersfree,activeintheirwork ofeducation,butconsciousoftheirdanger.Theyfollow theByzantineRite.Theyhadtheirchapelwithits iconostasis,apartitionwithdoors,adornedwithicons, whichseparatesthesanctuaryofachurchfromthe choirornave.TheirsuperiorwasArchimandrite (Abbot)AndreasCikoto,theninhisfifties.

Hewascarefultogivethelocalregimenogrounds forcomplaint.Butaswetalked,thatdarkDecember evening,itwasclearthattheshadowofpersecution hungalreadyoverhimandhislittlecommunity.

Lessthansixyearslater,ArchimandriteCikotowas deadinaSovietconcentrationcampintheIrkutsk region.Hediedalonelydeath,onFebruaryI1,1952, withnopriestbyhisside,withoutmedicalcare.

HecouldhavesavedhislifebyacceptingaSoviet proposal.LikeFatherHermanovich,hewasawellknownBelorussian.Hewasinvitedtobecomeheadof aschismaticRed-controlled"church"forBelorussia, theSovietrepublicborderingonPoland.Herefused, anddied,aneglected60-year-oldprisoner.

RememberingManchuriainbitterDecember,Icould guesswhatthatjourneymeant.

"AttheSiberianfrontierwewereheldforhalfaday inawoodexpectingtobekilled.Wefoundafterwards thattheChinesecommunistswereholdingusuntilthe Russiansagreedtopayforus."

InsideSiberia-Sovietterritory-theprisonerswere "tried"andcondemnedbyRussianjudgesforcrimes ;allegedlycommittedintheChineseterritoryofManchuria.FatherHermanovichwascondemnedas"aspy oftheVatican."FatherChaleilwasfoundguiltyof being"anaideofinternationalbourgoisie."

ThepriestswerekeptinaSiberianprisonfor11 monthsandthenmovedtoaconcentrationcamp.ArchimandriteCikotowasseparatedfromtheothersIn prisoneachreceivedonlyninegrams(aboutone-third ofanounce)offoodaday.Intheconcentrationcamp thesickreceived12gramsandthelabourers27grams. qOnSundaylastthenewpresbyterywasblessedand declaredopenbyHisGracetheArchbishop. HisGracewasattended bytheRev.P.P.O'Mara, ofSt.Mary'sCathedral.

Therewasnotahuge crowd,butastheresultof anappealmadebyRev,T. Moloney,S.M.,£84/2was donatedonthespottohelp payforthepresbytery.

Asfarbackas1946,when NorthBeachwasadministeredfromOsbornePark parish,HisGracetheArrchbishopmadeanappealfor fundsfoprovideamorefittingplacetoaccommodate thegrowingcongregation.

InMayof1947ahalf-acre blockoflandwasbought. Thiswastobethesiteof thefutureChurch-Hall.

Afurtherstepintheprogresstowardstheerection ofaparishwasin1948, whenNorthBeachwascut offfromOsborneParkand madepartofthenewly formedparishofScarborough.

When,in1951,theparish ofOurLadyofGracewas establishedatNorthBeach, Rev.ThomasPrendivillewas madeitsfirstParishPriest. AtfirstFatherPrendiville livedintheholidayhouse whichbelongedtothe SistersofMercy.Latera housewaspurcasedasa temporaryresidence.

In1954,aschool-church wasblessedandopenedby HisGracewhichwouldaccommodate120.Thistook theplaceoftheholiday

houseoftheMercySisters, whichcouldnolongeraccommodatethegrowingcongregation.

Thehousewas'purchased andextendedtoserveasa convent.Todaytheparish schoolisadministeredbythe SistersoftheHolyFamily ofNazareth.

InAugust,1959,Rev.JosephDepiazziwasappointed ParishPriest,thetemporary presbyterywassoldand planswerelaidforthe buildingofapresbyteryadjacenttothechurch-school.
