SisterSt.Pierremade holyprofessionatthenovitiatehouse,Abbotsford, Victoria,in1910,andspent someyearsinthefoldat HobartbeforebeingmissionedtotheWest.Admultos annos. AftertheMassandrenewalofvows,thevisitors weretheguestsofMother Prioressandcommunityat morningtea.

Abriefentertainmentwas givenbythegirlsoforchestralandchoralitems, andacomplimentary,originalresumeofthejubilarian'scalltothereligious lifeandheractivitiesduringit.

DaughterofMr.andMrs. J.RoweofLangsford-st., Claremont,Paulinereceived herearlymusicaltraining fromtheSistersofSt.Joseph,firstatMerredinand lateratNewNorcia.

Attheageofsevenshe wonapianoexhibitionfor sixthgrade.In1955she obtainedtheA.Mus.A.degree.

In1958shewasawarded theKylieClubmusicprize forL.Mus.A.

PaulinehashadconsiderablesuccessinW.A.Music Festivals.Lastyearshe wontheOpenPianoSolo andtogetherwithhersister,theopenPianoduetat thePerthMusicFestival.

Sheissurvivedbya brotherinIreland,anda sister,Mrs.Marshall,ofVictoriaPark.Herothersister, SisterPauloftheLittle SistersofthePoor,diedat Randwickafewyearsago.

TheRequiemMasswas sungintheBassendean churchbytheV.Rev.H. Kearin,parishpriestofVictoriaPark.Thedeaconwas theRev.W.Browne,parish priestofBassendean;the sub-deacon,theRev.J. Russell,parishpriestof Bayswater,andthemaster ofceremonies,theRt.Rev. Mgr.Sullivan.

TheSistrJrsformedthe choir.Theobsequieswere attendedbyalargegatheringofpriests,Sisters,relativesandfriends.

AmongPioneers Intheearlyyearsofthe century,whenSisterGerard entered,theVictoriaPark conventhadonlyrecently beenfoundedbyBishop Gibney,whohadbrought thepioneerSistersfrom Derry.

SisterGerardhadmany racyanecdotesofthehardshipsenduredsolightheartedlyinthoseearly days.

The-association'ssecretary, Mr.M.T.Cresp,toldthebig gatheringthatthepast12 monthshadbeenverysuccessfulfromallpointsof view. OnJuly3,theannualcollectionfortheHolyFather, popularlyknown,asPeter'sPence,willbemadeinall parishesoftheArchdiocese.Itisinterestingtonote thatthisannualcontributiontotheHolySeetookits riseintheEighthCentury,andthatintheMiddleAges itseemsalmosttohavebeenconfinedtoEnglandand somefewnorthernnations.Thefirsthistoricalrecord ofthistributederivesfromtheofferofKingOffaof MerciatothePapalLegate,andeveninthoseearly timesitwasstatedthatthemoneywastobeapplied tothereliefofthepoorandtoprovidinglightsfor thechurchesofRome.Thistraditionalpractice,distinctfromfeudaltributepaidinmanypartsofthe worldtotheHolySee,continueddowntotheReformation,butseemsnowheretohavesurvivedit.

Nextcamethetidalwave:Manytownsdisappeared completely;othershaveonlythree'orfourhouses standing.Thequakewhichcauseditwasof"grade ten"inmanycitiesabitfurthersouth;70percentof themarenowdestroyed.Therewasnocommunication. Railwayswereout.Firesstarted.Therewasnolight, nowater.Theonlytwohospitalsinonecitywent down.

WhatagraceofGodthatitdidnotoccuratnight. Thousandsuponthousandswouldhavebeenkilled.But westilldonotknowthetotalnumberofdeaths throughoutthenation.

NearlyOne-Third HasBeenStricken

Concepcion,Chile:MuchofsouthcentralChileremainsneardesolationin thewokeofthethreeweeksofrecurrent earthquakes,tidalwaves,volcaniceruptionsandavalanches.

Thecataclysmshavechangedthewholefaceof theregionsincethefirstdevastatingquakeofMay 21.Inallherlonghistoryofsuchcalamities,Chile hasneverknowngreaterdisaster.

Thetollmaytakemonthstocompute;itmight neverbeknown.Butthousandsaredead,andmore thousandsinjured.Atotalof170,000homesare wrecked,waterandsewagesystemsdestroyed, alongwithvirtuallyalldocksalongthewhole southerncoastofthenation.

Valdivia,hardesthitofthemajorcities,hasareas wherethegroundlevelhasdroppedasmuchas ninefeet.Crevicesaswideassixfeetarenot uncommon.

Inthetenprovinceshitbytheviolence,twoand aquartermillionpeoplehavesufferedinsomeway. That'snearly30percentofthetotalpopulationof Chile. Withwinternowbeginning,theplightofthe homelessnowbecamethemoredifficult.Butthe Chileanpeoplehaveunitedasoneincomingtothe aidoftheirstrickenbrothers.Atthesametime, overtwodozennations,rangingfromChile'sLatin AmericanneighbourstotheUnitedStatesand Canada,andGermany,SwitzerlandandSpain, haverushedaidtothehomeless.Nationsasdistant astheSovietUnion,IndiaandJapanhavealsolent ahand.Butreliefworkhasbeenhamperedbythe destructionofexistingairfieldsandportfacilities.

ThiscityofConcepcion,whichhadtoberebuilt almostcompletelyfollowingthe1939earthquake, isonthenorthernedgeofthedisasterarea.Itis Chile'sthirdlargestcity,withapopulationof closeto100,000.Thequakeshaveleftalmosthalf thecity'shomesdestroyedorunhabitable.The Cathedralishalf-wrecked,andmanyofthe churchesarealmostbeyondrepair.

NathanielHicks,ChileandirectorforCatholic ReliefServices-NationalCatholicWelfareConference,theoverseasreliefagencyoftheU.S.Bishops, arrivedhereonMay22tobeginsurveyrelief needs.Hewasthefirstnon-Chilean,non-governmentofficialonthescene.

Later,aftervisitigtheharder-hitareassouthof here,Mr.Hicksestimatedthatthedestructionof churches,seminariesandCatholicinstitutional buildingswillrunintotensofmillionsofdollars.

Duetothedisaster,hesaid,theChilean'Church "willneedalmostcompletefinancialsupport"from theCatholicsinAmericaandEuropeifitis"to rebuildandsurvivethisblow."

FatherFernandoOrtegaRoa,C.SS.R.,anativeof Chile,wasofferingMassinthecityofCauquinanes,240 milessouthofSantiago,whenthefirstquakestruckon May21.HeleftthefollowingdayforSantiagotoassist CatholicReliefServices-NationalCatholicWelfare ConferenceandChileanCatholicCharities(Caritas)in distributingreliefsuppliesfurnishedbytheAmerican CatholicBishops'agency.

ReferringtohisvisittothecitiesofValdivia,ConcepcionandPuertoMontt,thosehardest-hitbythe tremors,FatherOrtegareportedthatfrom400,000to 500,000personswere"leftwithnothing."

HeaddedthatthecitiesofPuertoSaavedra,Corral andNieblawereengulfedbytheragingwaterscaused bythequakes.

IttookFatherOrtegasixdaystofindoutthathis17 brothersandsisters,wholiveintheearthquakezones, werestillalive.Buttheirhomeswerecompletely destroyed,hesaid.

TheRedemptoristmissionarysaidthathehadpersonallycounted62planes,includingU.S.AirForce Globemasters.thatarrivedwithreliefsupplies.The communistshadbeentellingvictimsthattheywould receivenohelpfromtheUnitedStates,hesaid.

Inrecitingtheeventsofthetragedy,thepriestmade thisobservation:"Whatagreatforceforbetterrelations betweenSouthAmericaandtheUnitedStatesthe emergencyaideffortoftheU.S.governmentandvoluntaryagencieshadbeen."Hesaidthatpriortothe disastertherewasmixedfeelingtowardstheUnited StatesbecauseoftheSummitfailure.

PortugueseMissionsGrowDespiteLacks

CatholicmissionsinPortugal'soverseas territoriesoreplaguedbythesameillsthat afflicttheChurchathome-lackofpriests, educationandfunds.

ThisisparticularlytrueinthebigAfricanterritories ofAngolaandMozambique.ThehistoryofPortugalin Africaisaverykitgone,andthefirstMassescelebrated onAfricansoilsouthoftheSaharawerecelebratedby priestsaccompanyingPortugueseexplorersintheearly partofthe15thCentury.

AngolaandMozambiquebothpossessfineoldchurches erectedinthe17thand18thCenturies,andtheruinsof manyPortuguesefortsscatteredupanddownboththe easternandwesterncoastsofAfricaallshowtracesof chapelsaswellasfortifications.

Non-Catholicmissionaries,mostlymembersofAmericanevangelicalsects,arerequiredbythegovernment toacquireadefiniteproficiencyinPortuguesebefore receivingvisasforanyoverseasprovince,astheyare notpermittedtoteachorholdservicesinany-other language.ThisisnotrequiredofCatholicmissionaries. ButunderthemissionaryagreementwiththeHolySee of1940,thegovernmentagreestothenamesofforeign missionariesputforwardbythebishops,beforethey areappointed.

TofacilitaterelationsbetweentheChurchinthe overeasprovincesandthehomegovernment,thereisan unofficialmissionaryconsultortotheMinisterforOverseas.HeisFatherAlbanoPedro,amemberofthe PortugueseSocietyforCatholicOverseasMissions, similarinitsconstitutiontotheMillHillFathersin EnglandandtheMaryknollMissionersintheUnited States.

Therearewelloverathousandnunsworkingin schools,hospitalsandmissioncentresinPortuguese AfricaandoverfivehundredinGoaandtheoriental dioceses.

SpanishCisterciansfromPalenciahavealready foundedaTrappistmonasterynearNovaLisboain AngolaandtheCarmeliteconventatCoimbraisplanningtomakeafoundationinLourencoMarques.

Thiswouldbethefirstpurelycontemplativeconvent inPortugueseAfrica,thoughbothMacaoandGoahave DiscalcedCarmeliteconvents.

AgreatimpetuswasgiventotheChurchinPortugueseAfricabythevisittherein1957ofthethen ApostolicNunciotoLisbon,nowHisEminenceFernando CardinalCento,topresideatthefirstconferencetobe heldbetweenallthebishopsinPortugueseAfrica.It wasthefirsttimethatanApostolicNunciotothemother countryhadbeentoOverseasPortugal.

Fortheuninitiated,perhapsIshouldexplain thatthislittlebitofapparatus-asisobviousfrom somereflectionupontheworditself-consistsof netting,whichrisessixfeethigh,runsaroundthe bedandisfinishedoffwithacalicoceiling.

TheretiringeditoroftheVaticanCitydaily, CountGiuseppeDallaTorre,wasbornatatime whentheChurchwasforcefullydivestedofits temporalpowers,andhiscareerparalleledthe Church'sstrugglefromaresentfulpassivismback toactiveparticipationinthepublicaffairsofItaly.

RaimondoManzini,however,wasborninthefirst yearsofthiscentury,whentheChurchinItalyhad alreadybeguntomakeitsvoiceheard.Andhewas ayouthatatimewhenfar-sightedChurchmen weretraininganewgenerationofyoungmento taketheirplacesinthepubliclifeofthenewItaly.

HisLordship,Bishop Ryan,ofTownsville,celebratedtheMassinthepresenceofasolemnandoverflowingcongregation.

BeforetheRequiemMass began,monsignoriand clergyledaprocessionfrom thepresbyterytotheCathedral.

Theywerefollowedby ArchbishopsandBishops andRightRev.Monsignor D.G.Tiernan,VicarCapitular,whohasbeenadministeringthediocesesince thedeathofBishopTynan.

ArchbishopMaximiliande Furstenbergwasadignified figureintheprocession.

Theclergytooktheir placesinthebodyofthe cathedralandtheBishop proceededtothesanctuary.

DuringtheMasstheremainsofthelateBishop, whichwerebroughtbackto Australiabyair,restedon acatafalquebeforethe sanctuary,flankedbycandles.

Archbishop O'Donnell (Coadjutor-Archbishopof Brisbane),BishopBrennan (Toowoomba),andBishop Cahill(Cairns)wereamong themembersoftheHierarchypresentinthesanctuary. InterstateBishopspresent wereBishopFreeman(representingCardinalGilroy),BishopFox(representingArchbishopMannix), BishopGallagher(Port Pixie,S.A.).

TheGovernmentnextmonthwillconsider proposalstoallowdonationstowardsthe erectionofchurchbuildingsasanallowable taxationdeduction.

OnSunday,July10,Catholicsthroughout EnglandandWaleswillpray,attherequestof theHierarchy,forthemiraclesthatwillmake possibletheearlycanonisationbyPopeJohn XXIIIof40EnglishandWelshmartyrsof thetroubledReformationperiodinthe16th Century.

Notsince1935hastherebeenacanonisationof EnglishsaintsinRome.Thatwastheyearofthefourth centenaryoftheexecutionofSt.JohnFisher,Bishopof Rochester,andSt.ThomasMore,formerlyLordChancellorofEngland,fortheirrefusaltorepudiatethePapal supremacy.PopePiusXImarkedtheanniVersaryby canonisingthemboth,andtheirjointfeastiskepton July9.

Some200martyrshavealreadybeenbeatified;their individualfeastsareobservedlocallyintheplacesfrom whichtheycame,andtheyalsohaveacollectivefeast onMay4. '

ThisyearCardinalGodfrey,theArchbishopofWestminsterannouncedthedecisiontopetitionthePopeto resumetheprocessforthecanonisationof40ofthem, tothegreatprideofallCatholicsinBritain.

DonationsfrommembersoftheChurchofEngland, hesaid,wouldhelptoshowthattheunhappydays ofreligiousstrifeinBritain,whichproducedmartyrs inthepast,havelongsincegoneforever.

Inadditiontothe200Englishmartyrsalreadybeatified,thecasesofsome250morehave,formanyyears, beenunderconsiderationbytheRomanauthorities.

OtherslistedareBlessedJohnSouthworth(hisbody liesenshrinedtodayinWestminsterCathedral)and BlessedJohnKemble,knownasthepatronofsmokers becauseheinsistedonsmokingalastpipeonthe scaffoldbeforehewasexecuted.

BattleRagesInHeartOfRome

Theremovalofareligiousmosaicisthe latestepisodeinarunningten-yearbattle betweenpriestsandcommunists,bothtenants intheFalconieriPalaceinRome.

ForyearstheFolconieriPalacehasbeensharedby thePontificalEcclesiasticalHungarianInstituteandthe HungarianAcademy(nowcommunist).Fromthetime thatthecommunistsgainedpowerinHungary,the presenceofthepriestsandseminarianshasbeena sourceofembarrassmenttothecommunists.Onlythe law,whichrespectstheecclesiasticalclaimstouseof thebuilding,haspreventedthecommunistsfrein evictingthem.

Thefirstactofopenconflictoccurredtenyearsago whena200-year-oldpictureoftheBlessedVirgin whichoccupiedanicheontheoutsideofthebuilding wasirreparablydamagedwithaknifeduringthenight.

Nextthecommunisttenantsofthebuildingstopped thepriestsfromusingthemainentrancetogainaccess totheirquartersonthefloor.Theauthoritiesintervenedinfavourofthepriests,butonlyaftertheyhad alreadyopenedadoorforthemselvesinanotherpart ofthewall.

AtthetimeoftheHungarianuprisinginOctober, 1956,andtherepressionthatfollowed,therewere violentanti-communistdemonstrationsinRome.The directorsoftheHungarianAcademyfledtheFalconieri PalaceinterrorandtookrefugeintheCzechoslovak legationandthepriestsremainedaloneinthebuilding.

Itwas-duringtheirabsencethattherectorofthe pontificalinstitutecommissionedtheVaticanmosaics studiotomakeamosaicofOurLadyofHungary.This wasfixedintheplaceofthenichewheretheancient paintingofOurLadyhadbeen.

Afteranintervalof11monthsthepersonnelofthe academyreturnedtoFalconieriPalaceandsincethen hadleftthepriestsinpeace.Butrecentlythecommunistsbeganrefurnishingtheirpartofthepalacein preparationfortheOlympicGamesandtheHungarian communistswhomtheyexpectasguests.Apparently itoccurredtothedirectoroftheacademythatthe mosaicofOurLadyofHungaryonthefrontofthe buildingwouldembarrasshisguests.

SoithappenedthatonthenightofMay31two workmenremovedthemosaicandthevotivelamps thatburnedbeforeitandbrickeduptheopeninginthe wallwhereithadbeen. -

Officialsofthepontificalinstitutehavecalledittothe attentionofthecivicauthoritiesofRomethat,notonly istheftofamosaicinvolved,butthattheFalconieri Palaceisanationalmonumentandthatanystructural changesmustbeauthorisedbytheMinistryofFineArts.

ThepopulationofNorthernRhodesiais2,428,000. BaptisedCatholicsinthe country,accordingtostatisticsofJune30,1959number450,000andcatechumens74,000.Thenumber ofCatholicsinthecountry hasalmostdoubledsince 1949andthenumberof nativepriestshasmore thantrebled.Thereare, atpresent,308priests,76 Brothers,327Sisters762 catechistsand22major seminariansinthecountry.

TheChurchinSouthern Rhodesia SouthernRodesiaissituatedbetweenBechuanaland onthewestandMozambiqueontheeast.The countryhasapopulation of2,580,000.Accordingto statisticsofJune30,1959, baptisedCatholicsnumber 235,500andcatechumens 42,700.Thecountryisdividedintofiveecclesiasticalcircumscriptions.

Duringthedecade19491959theCatholicpopulationofSouthernRhodesia hasabouttrebled.Catholics numbered79,000in1949. Inthesameperiodthenumberofnativepriestshas increasedfivefold.Atthe presenttimethereare234 priests,109Brothers.806 Sisters,408catechistsand 22majorseminariansin SouthernRhodesia.

TheChurchinKenya Kenya,situatedonthe IndianOceanbetweenTanganyikatothesouth.Ugandatothewestand'Ethiopiatothenorth,hasa populationof7,150,000inhabitants.

BaptisedCatholicsin Kenyanownumber764,260 ormorethantwicethe numberthattheywerein 1949.Thecountryalsohas 168,023catechumens.StatisticsofJune30,1959).At thepresenttimeKenyahas 23nativepriestsandone nativebishop. In1949, nativepriestsnumbered thirteen.
