Theelectionofofficers fortheensuingyearresultedinthefollowing ladiesremaininginoffice:

Areportcftheworkdone duringthepast12months wasgivenbyeachbranch secretary,andatleastsome ofthedutiescaviedout,' whichincludedhospitalvisitation,churchcleaning,sewing,fetes,streetappeals, soupkitchenandvarious othercharitableworks,so necessaryineverypaish.

Theafternoonsessioncontinuedwithagreaternumberattending,anditwas verypleasingtoseeMrs. Childlookingverywell,and twoofouroldestandfaithfulmembersinMrs.McCann

andMrs.O'Neillpresent. Rt.Rev.MonsignorLangmeadaddressedtheassemblyandconcludedby thankingallmembersfor theireffortsduringtheyear.

Thepresidentwelcomed Rt.Rev.MonsignorE.Collinsastheguestspeaker, andhechoseashissubject "ImpressionsofCatholic LifeintheU.S.A."Herewas somethingveryenlightening andwewereallverysorry whentheaddressconcluded.

Mrs.JolleywelcomedHis Lordship,MostRev.J.J. Rafferty,who,inhisaddress tothemembers,stressedthe importanceofcharitable worksandthecloseliaison withotherorganisations.As thiswasWorldRefugee YearAppeal,HisLordship pointedtotheimportance ofthisappeal,andquoted someinterestingfactsand figures.Inconclusionhe thankedMonsignorLangmead,theexecutiveand membersfortheexcellent workcarriedoutduringthe year.

Inadditiontotheclothingshipment,Catholic ReliefServices-NationalCatholicWelfareConferencesentbyairfreightabout2,500blankets.Part oftheclothingalsowasshippedbyplane.

Concepcion,Chile'sthirdlargestcity,wasshaken byaseriesofquakesonMay21andanearly governmentreportsaidmorethan300personshad beenkilled.Aseriesoffiresfollowedthequakes, whichalsotriggeredtidalwavesthatdamagedand destroyedvillagesandresortsalong500milesof thenarrowChileancoastlineborderingthePacific.

SincethearmycouptookplaceinTurkeythenewspapershaverecalledthatnotfewerthansixcountries havebeentakenoverbythemilitaryafterthecollapse ofdemocraticgovernmentduringthepasttwoyears. OfthesetwoareMiddleEastcountriesandthebalance areintheAfro-Asianbloc.

Itisimportanttonoticethatinallsixinstances democraticproceduresareofveryrecentdateand seeminglyimitativeratherthanofindigenousgenius. Turkeyhelditsfirstfairelectionin1950;Pakistanhad itsfirstpopularelectionasearlyasFebruaryofthis years-after18monthsofmilitarylaw;after14months

Itisprobablyofsomesignificancethatthethreats againstthesmallnationswhichhavepermittedthe Americanstobuildmilitarybasesfirstissuedby KhrushchevshouldnowbereinforcedbyMarshal Malinovsky.Itisallthemorenoteworthysincethe Americanshaveannouncedthattheywouldrallytothe defenceofanynationsoattacked.

ItseemstomethattheRussiansareratheroverpitchedintheirinsistencethattheirrocketscanhit targetsatwhateverceilingstheymayfly.Thepointis thattheRussiansareover-doingaveryslightincident. HenceitisregrettabletofindcertainprominentAmericanpoliticianstakeupachallengewhichinsteadof beingprolongedshouldbeallowedtodropintothe limboofmuch-ado.

SenatorWilliamFulbright,whoischairmanofthe U.S.SenateForeignRelationsCommittee,isreportedas sayingthatPresidentEisenhowershouldnothave assumedresponsibilityfortheU-2spyplane;thathe couldhaveaccusedtheRussiansofmanufacturingthe wholeaffairthemselvesorcouldevenhaveclaimedthat theU-2wasstolenbytheRussians.

Diplomatically,suchstatementsarenonsense;practically,theyaredangerous;morally,theyareindefensible.TheinitialliesabouttheU-2-thatitwasa weatherplaneforceddownbyoxygenfailureandthat theflighthadbeenmadewithouttheknowledgeof authoritiesinWashington-wereclumsyandinept. Morallytheymightbejustifiedasmentalreservations concerningmatterswhich,intheinterestsofAmerican survival,theRussians(oranyoneelse)hadnobusiness toknow.

ButSenatorFulbrightseemstosuggestthatlyingof ofthissortmaybeindiscriminate,howeverimplausible itmaybe.HadPresidentEisenhowerdisclaimedany knowledgeoftheoperationsoftheU-2itmighthave reassuredthehumbugsintheKremlinthathewasnot apawninthehandsofthemilitarists.Butitwould havebeenshockingforAmericanmoraletoknowthat thePresident-whoisalsocommander-in-chiefofthe armedforces-hadnocontroloverintelligenceoperations.TohaveaccusedtheRussiansofmanipulating thewholeaffairthemselveswastodenytheplainfact thattheyhadcapturedCaptainPowersalive.Tosay theyhadstolentheU-2wasquitepuerile.Having blunderedintheinitialstages,thePresidenttookthe trueandrealisticlineofputtingallhiscardsonthe tableandbiddingtothestrengthofhishand.Ithas hadtheeffectofmakingtheRussiansprotesttoomuch forthecredulityofthefreeworld. : :::tee :

MoreinterestingexamplesaretobehadinEurope, wherethetrendisnottomilitarygovernment,butto sometypeofauthoritariancontrolandthedecayof democraticformsaccordingtotheBritishmodel.France istheoutstandingcaseinpoint-France,thelandwhere themodern,seculardemocraticnotionwasforged somewhatmorethan200yearsago.Franceranthe democraticidealintothegroundwithamultiplicityof partiesandanotionoffreedomwhichlackedanymoral basis.ShehasfoundherselfindeGaulle,whodoesnot representamilitarytake-over,butthedoctrinaltype ofpoliticswhichtheGallicspiritseemstoneed.

WeightOfHistoricalExperience

Portugalflourishedunderamild,prosperousdictatorshipfor28yearsandSpainhasfoundstabilityunder Francofortwodecades.Democraticproceduressit uneasilyupontheItaliansandthesplinteringofpolitical groupingsandimpossiblecoalitionsthreatentoreduce thatcountrytothestatusofFourthRepublicFrance.

Itisextraordinaryandathingofprofoundsignificanceinaneraofcoldwarthatthearmyhasbecomethe symboloforderandstablegovernment.Ineachcase whereithasintervened,eitherasatemporaryineasure orasapermanent,substituteregime,ithasbornethe stampofincorruptibility.Itsleaders,forthemostpart, havebeentrainedbytheFrenchorBritishinWestern ideasandhavedevelopedanespritdecorps.

Theyhaveseenthewasteinvolvedbypoverty, illiteracyandinstability.Theydespisetheintriguesof politicianswhoapeWesterndemocraticpracticeswithouthavingtheirsubstance.

Howeveritmaybe,democracyhasfailedtofunction. Progresshasbeenhaltedbylackofresourcesorknowhow.Frustrationhasfollowedandindesperationthe peoplehavewelcomedmartialaid.Forthemostpart militaryinterventionhasincreasedhonestyandadministrativeefficiencyandalwayshasmadeforstability. Unhappily,asinNasser'scase,poweritselfwhetsother appetitiesandambitions.

Thecaseformilitarycontrolinimmaturenationsis notlightlytobeputaside.ItwasadvancedbySun Yet-sen,byStalinandbyascoreofLatinAmerican dictators.Insofarasitarisesoutofthenecessityfor tutelageinself-governmentitmaybetheonlything left.Ifmilitarygovernmentisastepback,itsjustificationliesinitsbeingfollowedbyastepforward.

Madrid:ASpanishCatholicworkers'associationhascomplainedthatSpain'sworkingclosshasbeenforcedtoshoulderthe heaviestburdensinthenotion'sefforts againstinflation.

InanoutspokendeclarationtoallSpaniardsand "toallwhohaveresponsibilityintheguidanceofthe nation,"theWorkers'ConfraternityofCatholicAction IFIO.AC1askedfora "justdistributionofsacrifices"amongthepoor,the richandthestate.

Furthercomplaintsinthe statementwere: Workerswerenotconsultedorgivenreasonsforthe sacrificesdemandedofthem. TheSpanishworkingclass "inmanycircumstances findsitselfwithoutgenuine representationandwithout meanstomakeitselfheard."

Thepresentsacrificesof theworkersweremadenecessarybyaprevious"policyofinflationthatbrought theentirenationaleconomy tothebrinkofcollapse."

TheCatholicActionstatementsaid:

"Weacknowledgethe needtostabilisemoney,an indispensableconditionfor anysoundeconomy. We ask,however,thatthesacrificesdemandedtoachieve itbeequitablydistributed amongallthepeople.

"Itisparticularlyupto thosepersonsandclasses whichbenefitedmorefrom thatothereconomicpolicy (ofinflation)tofacesuch sacrifices."

Thestatementdemanded "austerityonthepartof therich,austerityonthe partofmanagement,and austerityonthepartofthe state."

"Itisuselesstopretendto convinceworkerstoaccept humblyasmallerincome andevenunemployment whilepublicandprivate them,"theworkers'group them,"theworkersgroup said.

"Enormousamountsare spenttoembellishthecentresoflargecities,andthe statefurthermorehasobviouslyincreaseditsexpenditures.

"Theworkingclass,which inmanycircumstancesfinds

"Lackofinformation troublesworkerswhodonot knowthetruecausesand reasonsforthesacrifices whichhavebeenimposedon them,orthereasonsforthe situationinwhichtheyfind themselves."

TheConfraternityappealed tothenation'sleadersto "granttheworkingclassits rightfulplaceinSpanish society."

"Withoutdoubt,thissituationwillfindasolution onlybymeansofasincere andgeneralexaminationof conscience,andtheacknowledgmentoferrorswherever theylie,"thestatement said. Theconfraternityalsoappealedtotheworkersto helpachieve"notonlyan economicbutalsothesocial andspiritualstabilisationof thecountry."

turnedfromAnnaPlains Stationwith30nativeson rangeplansweremode,storesordered,andboard.Thenoiseandbustle evendoubledthatofthe previousnightasfamilies andfriendsreunitedafter monthsofseparation.The bigMissionbellthenjoyfullypealedandthepeople, childrenandvisitorsgatheredonthelawnforthe Christmasparty. TheChristmastree,laden withgiftsandmanytoys was,ofcourse,thecentre ofattraction.Thepeanuts

Afterlunchthesmall boyscamewithbeseeching eyes,imploringtobeallowedacrownintheirdormitorytoo,and,permission granted,happilydispersed togatherallthatwasnecessary.

Byteatimethedormitorieshadtakenontheappearanceofworkshops. Therewerepiecesofwire forthebasesofthecrowns, purpleribboncarefully ironed,candles,matches, hymnbooks,andahuge pileofgreenery-enough todecoratethewholemission.

Afterteathechildren gatheredtogether,andwhile oneofthelaymissionaries explainedthemeaningof theAdventCrownthe othersguidedthesmall ebonyhands.Thefinished crownsweresurelyworks ofartandalthoughthegirls' effortwasbyfarthemost beautiful,thesameamount oflovewentintothemakingofthemall.

Thesmallceremony whichthentookplacegreatlydelightedthechildren. Theygatheredaroundthe crownswhichwerehungin theirdormitoriesandthreeyear-oldMary,thesmallest child,litthefirstcandle. $hehadtobeliftedvery hightoreachandsucceededonlyafterthreeshaky attempts.AnAdventcarol wasthensungandthusbeganthepreparationforthe comingoftheBabyKingon Christmasnight.

Thefollowingweeksof Adventwerefullandhappy.Eachnightafterprayersinthechapel,theceremonywasrepeateduntil finallythefourthcandle waslitandonlyafewdays reinaineduntilChristmas.

FloodOfCards

EarlyinDecemberthe childrenhadreceivedtheir firstChristmascardfrom MissAllieEvanswhohad caredforthemduringthe Mission'sfirstyear.After that,Christmascardsarrivedwitheverymail,each withapicturetobeexplainedandastorytobe toldaboutthesenderbeforebeingaffixedabove thebedswithtwo-inch nails.

Greatwasthejoyon ChristmasEvewhenacard arrivedfromMissBarbara Shea,SuperioroftheVer SacrumMariaeLayInstitute.Thechildren'seyes justsparkledtoseetheir ownnameswrittenonthe cardfromfarawayVictoria.

Whenthechildrenbegan tomaketheircribfrom cardboardcut-outs,the threelaymissionarieswho havededicatedayearof theirlivestoerectanew hospitalatLaGrangeturnedtheircarpentrytothe makingofamanger,stable andwoodenfigures.

Parcelsofclothing,toys, sweets,nutsandChristmas decorationswereevidence

ofthegenerosityand thoughtfulnessofmanyrelativesandfriendsand wouldtheycouldhavewitnessedthejoyanddelight ofthesesimplepeoplein eventhesmallestgift.

FromtheMondaybefore Christmasallpreparation intensified,andthetwo sewingmachinesworked overtimeasthewomen ccmpletedtheirwork.Each personontheMission,reeceivedafullsetofclothing.

Theitemsforthemen wereboughtinPerth,but theclothesforthewomen, childrenandthebabies weremadefrombulk material.Assoonasthe sewingwascompletedthe articlesweresortedinto sizesadsmallgiftssuchas mirrors,handkerchiefsand powderforthewomen,and pocketknivesforthemen, wereadded.Theneach bundlewaswrappedand named,withadditionalgifts forthosewhohadworked hardduringtheyear.

Insuchsmallwaysthe peopleareencouragedto usethetrainingtheyhave receivedandincreasetheir interestandsenseofresponsibility.

Eacheveningthechildren practisedtheirfirstMissa Cantatatobesungon Christmasmorning.Imagine howdifficultitwasfor FatherFrancistoteach themtosingLatinwhen theyarestillstrugglingto expressthemselvesinEnglish!

EverycorneroftheMissionseemedtofeaturea Christmastreeandthe poincianatreeinthefront ofthepriest'shousewas alsodecoratedbytheschool boys.

Therewasgreatexcitementoneeveningwhenthe truckfromBeagleBayMissionarrivedwithsevenof theyoungLaGrangepeople whoweretobebaptisedon ChristmasDay.Five-yearoldHelenalsocamefrom theOrphanageinBroome tojoinherbrotherGordon forChristmas.

December24 dawned clearandhot,andimmediatelyafterbreakfast,the Missiontruckdepartedfor AnnaPlainsStation,60 ninessouthofLaGrange, tocollectsomeofthemen whohadbeenworking there.

JohnScammel,aidedby hisfellowlaymissionaries, GusHoflingandKevin Brown,connectedandhung colouredlightson the poincianatree.Theythen putthefinishingtouchesto thecribanderecteditin theChapel.JoyTrantor, helpedbytheschoolgirls, wasbusypreparingthe Chapelforthebaptisms whichweretotakeplace beforeMidnightMass,and bylateafternooneverything wasready.

CarmelHodgkinsoncompletedthepreparationsfor theChristmasdinnerforthe largeMissionfamily.The tableandhousedecorations weremadebythelaymissionariesfromshellsand coralscollectedbyKathie Curtainfromthenearby beaches.

DuringMidnightMass thechildrensangthetraditionalcarols,anditwas particularlytouchingto heartheseyoungaborigines singing"SilentNight"and theAustralianChristmas carol.

Whenthechildrenwere. asleepatlastthelaymis-

sionariescreptfrombedto bedandsoonmysterious odd-shapedparcelsthat rattleddecoratedtheends of40smallbeds.Thenoise whichfilledthewholeMissionat5a.m,neednotbe described,butanyonewith onlytwochildrenwould understand!Onethingis certain-therewillbeno whistlesnextyear.WOW!

OnChristmasnighta NativityPlaystagedbythe childrenconcludedahappy ChristmasatLaGrange.

....ANDCHRISTCAMETOHISNATIVES

OnChristmasnight,1959,immediately priortoMidnightMass,eightfull-blooded aborigineswerereceivedintotheCatholic Church.ThesimplebutimpressiveceremonytookplaceinthehumblechapelatLa GrangeMission.

LaGrange,situated120 milesfromBroome,was establishedasaMissionby thePallottineFathersin 1955onthesitethathad beenpreviouslyusedasa Governmentrationstation forthelocalnatives.Of thepopulationof110,very fewhadreceivedany education,andonlythe youngeronescouldunderstandalittleEnglish.

Thetremendoustaskof educating,upliftingand winningthesesoulsfor Christ,togivetheopportunitytoknow,loveand servetheonetrueGod,was allottedtoRev.FatherFrancisHuegel,S.A.C.

Thusbeganthelabour, whichborefruitfiveyears later.TobringthefundamentalsofourFaithtothese nativeswasadifficulttask indeed.Firstly,thelanguage wasabigbarrier-notone, butamixtureofsixtribes residedatLaGrange,each tribespeakingadifferent languageordialect.Despite 24yearsonthemission fields,andsomeunderstandingofthenativelanguage, FatherFrancisfoundmany difficultiestobeovercome beforeadequatereligiousinstructionscouldbegiven. Secondly,manyofourEnglishconceptsmeannothing totheaborigines.Itwasa long,slowprocesstoexplain tothemfullythemeaningof theword"life"andofthe word"soul."

Lastly,andperhapsthe hardestwordforthemto understandis"grace."So familiartousandyetso difficulttoexplain.Itwas essentialforthesefuture Christianstounderstandthe meaningoftheactionof graceinsouls,yetforthese primitivepeople,who,for generationupongeneration, havelivedlargelybytheir senses,itseashardtocomprehendsomethingtheyneithersaw,feltnor touched.

SacrificesAsked Butatlastastartseas madeandregularreligious instructionsweregivento theoldpeople,bothmenand women.

Meanwhile,aschoolwas startedandthechildrenreceiveddailyChristianDoctrinelessons.

Someyearslater,in1957, someoftheteen-ageboys weresenttoBeagleBay Missiontolearnatrade,By nowtheoldermenofthe tribesunderstoodthatif they,ortheirchildren,were toheChristians,theirpagantribalceremoniesmust cease.Theyunderstoodthat whereastheircorroborees, hunting,spearandboomerangthrowingcould,and should,continue,muchof theoldlawmustgo.

Theboys,insteadofparticipatingintheinitiation ceremony,so,veryimportant intriballife,wouldbebaptisedinstead.

Thegirlswouldnolonger bepromisedinmarriageto theoldmen,butwouldbe freetomarryamanoftheir choice.Themen,according toChristianlaw,wouldhave

onlyonewife,notthreeor fourasnow.

Still,thereligiousinstructions,bothatLaGrangeand BeagleBayMissions,were givenandatthesametime thebattlewiththeoldmen continued.

Finally,inSeptember, 1959,aftermanyfervent prayersonthepartofthe missionaries,andmuc lengthydiscussion,theold menagreedtoallowtheir sonsanddaughtersfreedom ofchoiceeithertocontinue withtheoldlawortoembracethenewChristianlife.

YoungstersReturn Someweekslater,eight youngpeoplehaddecidedto entertheCatholicChurch.

Kiberli,theonlygirl,was 17yearsofage.Theagesof theboys,John,Roger,WiaWia,Paul,Willy,Pungana andBobby,rangedfrom17 to19years.

Paulwas'theonlyoneat thetimeresidingatLa Grange,Itwasdecidedthe othersevenwouldreturnin December,andtheBaptismaldatewassetfor Christmasnight.

Theanticipationandexcitemenofbothyoungand oldwasintensifiedasthe timeofthereturnofthe youngpeopledrewnear.

Finally,theyarrivedin theBeagleBaytruck,late onthenightofDecember

21.Youngsterswhohad supposedlybeensleepingfor twohoursswarmedfromall directions!Itwasmuchlater beforeorderwasrestored andoneandallhappilyretiredtobed.

FatherFrancisspentthe lastdaysofAdventpreparingtheyoungpeoplespirituallyfortheirbaptisms.

Theexternalpreparations werewellunderway.A whitefrockwasmadefor Kiberliandwhitesashesfor theboys.

JoyTranterandCarmel Hodgkinsonpreparedthe chapel,andengravedasymbolonthewhitebaptismal candles.AsLaGrangedoes notboastabaptismalfont, adishandsuitablestand wereprocuredforthepurpose.Theseweredecorated withwhitematerialand trimmedwithpaleblueribbon.

Thechildrenhelpedto gathermanyflowersforthe altarand,chapeldecorations.

At11p.m.theceremony commenced,ThewholeMissioncommunityhadgatheredandmanynativesfrom neighbouringstationswere amongthosepresent.

Thethreemembersofthe laymissionarybuilding team,JohnScammel,Gustav HoflingandKevinBrown, werereadytoactasgodparents. Twobaptised nativesfromAnnaPlains Station,MichaelandWandi, alsoactedasgod-fathers. CarmelHodgkinsonactedas god-mothertoKiberli.

Itwasatremendous momentwhenaftertheresponsesweremadeSatan andhispompsandworks hadbeenrenounced,the

watersofBaptismflowed, andeighttallAustralians werereceivedintotheMysticalBodyofChrist.Surely, itwasamomentwhen heavenleaneddownand earthwasuplifted!

MidnightMassimmediatelyfollowedtheceremony andtheyoungpeopleparticipatedforthefirsttime.

Thissimpleceremony, longtoberememberedby FatherFrancisandthelay missionaries,is,ofcourse, onlythebeginning.Soon theyoungpeoplewillmake theirFirstConfession,receivetheirLordandMaster forthefirsttimeinHoly Communion,andlaterhe confirmed.Theirtraining willthenbecontinuedas theyarepreparedaslay apostlestotakeanactive partintheestablishmentof Christ'sKingdomonearth.

R.:Themodernpracticearoseduringthe19thCentury.TheFrenchRevolutionof1789,withitsattack onreligion,pavedthewayforit.Rationalistsgenerally tookuptheidea,andthefirstCrematoriuminEurope wasbuiltin1874.

Theauthorisaprofessor atColumbiaUniversityin Americaandhasspecialised inmusicandthehistoryof the19thCentury.Heis,in fact,wellequippedtowrite thebiographyoftheman whoreallyinitiatedwhatis calledthe"Romantic"periodofmusic,andwhobore theodiumoftheopposition somuchthat,untilrecently, hismusicwashardlyever heardexceptunderthe batonsofafewfearlessconductorslikeBeecham.

ThelifeofBerliozisa colourfulsubjectinany case,livedasitwasagainst aconstantbackgroundof revolutionandcounterrevolutioninFrance,but ProfessorBarzuntakesthe readerdeeperthanthe superficialglamourofBerlioz'scolourfuladventures.
