OnHowTransubstantiationOccurs
Philosophus,Richmond:SincetheScholasticphilosophyendsinself-contradictionin tryingtoexplaintransubstantiation,mustwe notseekanotherexplanationofthedoctrine oftheRealPresenceofChristintheEucharist?
R.:TheScholasticexplanationoftransubstantiation involvesnotraceofcontradiction.Norwillanyother explanationreasoncandevisedojusticetotherevealed truth.
Christsaid:"ThisisMy Body."Hedidnotsay: "ThisisasymbolofMy Body."Anditwouldnot beHisbodyif,afterconsecration,thesubstantial realityofbreadstillremainedthesubstantial realityofbread,insteadof beingchangedintothe substantialrealityof Christ'sbody.
PopePiusXII,therefore, inhis1950Encyclical "HumaniGeneris,"wrote stronglyandexplicitly:"You willfindmenarguingthat thedoctrineoftransubstantiationoughttoberevised, dependingasitdoesona conceptionofsubstance whichisnowoutofdate.
"TheRealPresenceof ChristintheHolyEucharist isthusreducedtoakindof symboliccommunication, the consecratedspeciesbeingno morethananeffectivesign ofChrist'sspiritualpresence."
ThePopedescribesthe ideaofthesemenasan "error,duetothespiritof innovation,withpoisonous fruits."
Speakingfromthepurely philosophicalpointofview. JacquesMaritainwritesin hisbook,"St.Thomas Aquinas(p.165):"Noother philosophicaldoctrinehas, asamatteroffact, beenable totakeitsplaceinthecontextoftheologywithout causingdamage."
Q.:MayaCatholicadmitthe doctrineasinexplicable byreason,whileholding itfirmlybyfaith?
R.Thedoctrineofthe RealPresenceofChristin theHolyEucharistis,of course,arevealedmystery, tobefirmlybelievedbyan actoffaith.
Soundphilosophy,however,canatleasttellus whatmusthavehappened, grantedthemysterioustruth ofOurLord'swords:"This isMyBody."
Foritisevidentthatafter consecration,theEucharist isnotHisbodyaccordingto theexternalappearancesof breadandwinewhichremain.
ItcanonlybeHisbody,
therefore, byachangingor conversionoftheunderlying substanceofthebreadand wineintothesubstantial realityofChrist'sbodyand blood.
TheCatholicChurchhas definedasanArticleofFaith thischangeofsubstance; andinadditiondemandsat leastourreligiousassentto thetruththattheterm "transubstantiation"isthe mostsuitableoneavailable inourlanguagetoexpress herdoctrine.
Theprocessof"transubstantiation"isitselfundoubtedlyamystery.St. ThomasAquinaswritesofit: "Thisconversionisnotlike naturalconversions, butis entirelysupernatural, wroughtbythepowerof Godalone Itcannotbe cataloguedunderordinary physicalprocesses, butcan begiventhespecialname oftransubstantiation" ("SummaTheologies,"Part 3,Q.75,Art.4).
Catholicsarecommittedto whatoccursattheconsecration,namely,aconversion ofthesubstanceofthe breadandwineintothesubstanceofOurLord'sbody andblood,althoughpreciselyhowthatchangeoccursremainsintherealm ofmystery,andisknown onlytoGod.
Webelieveinitbyfaith, andhavetoholdthat 'transubstantiation"bestexpressesinourlanguagewhat itiswebelieve.
Thisdoesnot,ofcourse, excludeequivalentsin,say, theGreeklanguage,as "metousiosis,"orintheRussianlanguage,as"presushchestulenie,"bothofwhich areexplainedintheOrthodoxChurchesasmeaning the"transmutation"ofbread andwineintothebodyand bloodofChrist.
At A's -Russian Theolti. C(iFer:nceheld inMoscowinJuly,.1956, ProfessorK.I.Ruzhitsky, RectorofMoscowTheologicalAcademy,toldtheAnglicanrepresentatives:"The EasternPatriarchsinthe ConfessionusethetermcorrespondingtotheLatin" ("Report,"page57).
Earthburialbecamethe universalcustomthroughoutChristendomandremainedsountilthe19th Century,whenthepractice wasrevived,largelyby free-thinkingenemiesofthe -Christianreligion.

Isthattrue.
R.:No.Sucheffortsto explainearlyChristianoppositiontocremationasnot basedonreligiousmotivesis completelyopposedtothe evidence.
TheearlyChristian Fathersinsistedthatearth burialwaspropertothe Christianreligionasopposed tothepagancustomofcremation.
Duringthepersecutions, thepagansburnedthebodies ofChristianvictimspurposelytooffendthereligiousbeliefsofChristians;andthey thoughtthustorefutethe Christiandoctrineofthe resurrectionofthebody.
TheearlyChristian Fathersknewthattoreduce thebodytoashescouldnot possiblyaffecttheresurrectionofthebody, andsaidso. Theytoldthepagansthat nomatterhowtheymight treathumanbodiesGod. Whocreatedtheelementsof theuniverse, caneasily transformthemosthidden andseparatedelementsback intothebodiestheyonce formed, andthatonthelast dayallhumanbodies, even thosedeprivedofburial, willriseagain. Butifthataspectofthe matterdidnotdisturbthem, theyknewwellthatthe motiveofthepaganswas hatredoftheChristianreligion, andthattheirintention wasatleasttosuggestthat deathistheabsoluteendof

Inotherwords, cremation wasintendedbythepagans asasymbolofstraight-out annihilation, Q.:IftheearlyChristiana hadreligiousmotivesfor insistingonearthburials, whatwerethey? R.:Theirattitudewasnot merelyoneofreaction againstpaganism.Theyhad animmensereverencefor thebodiesofdeceasedChristians, bodiessanctifiedby baptism, templesoftheHoly Ghostthroughoutlifeinthis worldanddestinedtoshare inthegloriousresurrection ofChrist. Theirreverenceofincineratingthebodiesoftheir deadasiftheyweresomuch offalorrefuseprofoundly shockedthem.Theyinsisted, therefore, onearthburial andtheChurchconsecrated theveryplacewherebodies werelaidtorest, declaring ittobeholyground.

Suchisthesymbolismof St.Paul'swords:"Whatis sownincorruptionshall riseinincorruption thismortalmustputonimmortality"(1Cor.15:42,53).
Moreover,burialmeanta literalconformitywith ChristHimselfWhowas buriedandroseagain,"the first-fruitsofthemthat sleep"(1Cor.15:20).
