          Forthepast60years-since,thoughincomplete,it wasdedicated-theyhadhopedandprayedfortheday whenitwouldbecompleted.Theirprayerwas answered,theirhoperealised.Itwasamajestic, spacious,dignifiedanddevotionalbuilding-worthyof -theholypurposeforwhichitwaserectedandworthy oftheCityofFremantle.
          HecongratulatedparticularlytheOblateFathers,and thankedthemfortheirexcellentadministrationofthe ParishofFremantle.Itwasimpossible,HisGrace continued,dulytoappraisetheworkoftheOblates because,likeallapostolicworkspringingfromapure intentionandsupernaturalmotive,itwasknowntoGod alone.ButifthepeopleofFremantlecouldrightly gloryinitssuperbchurch,thecreditwaslargelydue totheinitiative,interest,energyandvisionofthe pioneerFathersdowntothepresentParishPriest, whosecourageandresourcefulnessincompletingthe buildingwereworthyofthehighestcommendation.
          Asanexampleoftheirselflessness,HisGracementionedthatin1944thepeopleofFremantlepresented apersonaltestimonialtotheOblatestocommemorate the50thanniversaryoftheirarrivalinWesternAustralia.TheFathersacceptedthegiftonlyoncondition thatitwouldbeutilisedtoacquiremarblealtar-rails forthechurchwhenitwasbeingcompleted.
          TheArchbishopspokefeelinglyoftheworkofthe ChristianBrothersandSistersofSt.Josephofthe
          Apparition,whoseschoolshadcontributedsomany vocationstothesanctuaryandthecloister. Healsocongratulatedthecontractor,Mr.S.Costello, andthetradesmenassociatedwithhim.
          TheSuperiorthankedHisGraceandwelcomedthe distinguishedvisitors,includingtheMayor,members oftheCityCouncil,andthelocalMemberofParliament, Mr.Lavery,M.L.C.FatherSullivanthankedallwho hadmadethisdaypossiblebytheirgenerosity,assuring themthateverystoneinthechurchwasaprayer whichwouldlastaslongasSt.Patrick's.

          SeveralissueshavecombinedtopreventCeylon's enjoyingalong-desiredcivilpeace.Foronething,the conservativepartieshavebeensplitsince1951.Neither cancommandthe76seatsnecessarytoformagovernment.Whiletheysquabble,themotleycrewofleftist partiesincreasetheirinfluence.Thisfactorisofgreat significanceinanationwhichispredominantly Buddhist.Indeed,itwasprobablythedecisiveelement intheshortlivedsuccessofDudleySenanayake. A Buddhisthimself,helashedoutstronglyagainstthe Marxists,whohaveforyearsposedasthechampions ofthepoorBuddhistpeasantry.Heremindedthemof themurderedmonksanddefiledtemplesofTibet. Moerover,theCommunistshavedonethemselvesno goodwiththeirrecordofchaosandfrequentstrikes.
          Underthefour-yearruleoftheGreatCeylon(Sri Lanka)FreedomParty,amajorobjectivewasthe nationalisationoftheschools.Thiswasbitterlyopposed bytheCatholics,who,althoughtheynumberonly 550,000inapopulationof7,400,000,haveamajorstake intheeducationalfieldwith900schoolsand220,000 students.DespiteBuddhistopposition,Senanayake duringtheelectiongaveassurancesthathewouldnot takeoverassistedschools,includingthoseofthe Catholics.BuddhistsandMarxistshavejoinedforces tonationaliseCatholicschoolsandtoendthesubsidies theyreceivefromtheState.Whatthefutureholdsfor CeylonandfortheCatholicsofthatnationisuncertain.           FiguresreportedbytheSacredCongregationforthe PropagationoftheFaithonJune30,1957,willgivean ideaofthedioceseafterithadfunctionedforfour yeas.Inanareaofabout4,000squaremilesthere were53,343Catholics,3,077catechumens,25priests,27 BrothersandNuns,10seminariansand92catechists.
          TodaytheRutabodiocesehasaCatholicpopulation ofabout61,000outofatotalpopulationof132,000.The majorityofthenon-CatholicsareMoslems,whoconstituteamajorproblemforthemissionaries,foreconomic aswellasreligiousreasons.Theeconomicproblemis explainedbythefactthatcommercialsuccessisidentifiedwithbeingaMoslem.
          TheCatholicsoftheRutabodiocesearepoorand,as anaturalconsequence,soaretheSee'spriestsand churches.Until1951thechurchatKanhigowasthe onlypermanentchurchedificeintheentireareaapart fromthecathedralatRutabo.

          TheMajorPenitentiaryperformscertainceremonies inthefourmajorbasilicasofRomeduringHolyWeek, andhastheprivilegeofpresentingthePopewiththe goldenhammerusedtoopentheHolyDoorofSt. Peter'satthebeginningofholyorjubileeyears.

          Colombo:Ceylon'sgovernorgeneraldeclaredattheopeningofthenewparliament thatthegovernmentacceptstheprinciple thatareligiousenvironmentisanessential partofachild'seducation.
          Governer-GeneralSirOliverGoonetilleke,inthe traditionalSpeechfromtheThroneonApril6,told Parliamentthateveryeffortwillbemadetoprovide Ceyloneseeducationwithareligiousbackground.He alsoreiteratedthatthegovernmentguaranteesthe peoplethefreedomtopractisetheirreligion.
          Thenewparliament,thefourthsinceCeylonbecame independentin1948,metforthefirsttimesinceits ElectiononMarch19.Theelectionbroughtbacktothe premiershipDudleySenanayake,leaderoftheconservativeUnitedNationalparty,afterfouryearsof rulebytheGreatCeylon(SriLanka)Freedomparty. PrimeMinisterSenanayake'simmediatepredecessor, WijayanandaDahanayake,aFreedompartyleader,had headedacaretakergovernmentsincethedeathofPrime MinisterSolomonW.R.D.BandaranaikelastSeptember.Mr.Bandaranaikewasassassinatedbya Buddhistmonk.
          Mr.Senanayake'sUnitedNationalistswononlya meagreplurality.Itgainedonly50seatsinthe151seatHouseofRepresentatives,against46seatsforthe Freedomparty-whichwasformedbydisgruntled UnitedNationalpartymembersin1951.
          ThethreeMarxistpartiestogetherwon23seats,and pollednearly800,000votes.Thiswasone-quarterof thetotalballotof3,129.246.TheMarxistgroupshad courtedultra-nationalisticBuddhistgroupsaswellas leftists,andhadbeenwidelyexpectedtomakeabetter showing.Atitwas,theypolledabouthalfthevoteof thetwoconservativepartiescombined.
          Theelectionhadbeencomplicatedbythefactthat24 partiesenteredcandidates-somepartiesrunningin onlyasingleconstituency-andtherewere175independentsinthefield.

          Ceylonhas550,000Catholicsinitstotalpopulation ofabout9,400,000.ButtheCatholiccommunityconductssome900schoolswithatotalenrolmentof 220,000students.

          FOR25YEARSthetown ofSaavedra,Bolivia,had beenwithoutapriest.Many ofthepeoplehadfalleninto paganworship,untilamissionarywassenttolook aftertheparish.Soonafter, thepriestreportedtothe BishopofSantaCruz;"I neversawachurchfillup sofastinmylife.Itwas burstingwithpeopleanxious torenewtheFaiththeyhad beendeprivedofpractising."
          ThentheyhadaMission withtheseresults: 85marriageswereblessed, 162childrenwerelegitimatised, 200parishionerswerebaptised, 995receivedconfirmation.
          Therewere1,500Confc3sionsandHolyCommunions.
          Thatparticularmissionary isallaloneinaparishextendingover800square miles-withapopulatiorof a,ouo.Hisgreathopeisthat soonaPolivianboywillbecomeaparishpriestinSaavedra.
