Themeeting,heldatthe CatholicCentreonMarch20, wasattendedby60delegates representing29branches.
TheSpiritualDirector, theRev.P.Carmody,had previouslypresentedtoHis Lordship,onbehalfofthe society,achequefor£150 towardsthesupportofa seminarianforthecurrent year.
"Itisnotoften,"HisLordshipsaid,"thatIamgiven theprivilegeofspeakingto theHolyNameSocietyas theHolyNameSociety.On otheroccasionswhenI.had tospeakyouweremerged withtherestofthegathering.
"Iextendmygrateful thankstoyouonbehalfof theArchdiocese,forprovidingfinancialaidforthe buildingupofitspriesthood, whichwillbringdownthe choicestblessingsfrom AlmightyGod.
"Wearethrownonour ownresources,"hesaid,"and cannolongerexpectthe samenumberofpriestsfrom Ireland,aswereceivedupto theendofthewar.
"ThediocesesofAmerica openeduptoIrelandafter thewar,andwearenow competingwiththem,They havealltheadvantagesin enticements,withrelatives onlyafive-hourjourney awayfromthem.
"Foralongtimethere werenotenoughvocations amongourboys,but,thank God,thatphaseispassing andourseminaryisnow filledtocapacity,Taking intoconsiderationthetime takenbyastudenttocompletehistraining,theHoly NameBursaryisindeedof mostvaluablehelp.

"TheexistenceoftheHoly NameSociety,eveninmy shorttime,hasaccounted foraremarkableincreasein thenumberofmenwhofrequenttheSacraments.
"Inthepast,"saidHis Lordship,"thereusedtobe aconsistentlylargernumber offemalecommunicants; nowoverseasvisitorsto Australia,especiallyHis EminenceCardinalAgagianian,areimpressedwith thestrengthofnumbers amongthemalecommunicants,whichisasuresign ofvirilityinthedevotional lifeofthecommunity.
"ThestrengthoftheArchdioceseisduetothestrength oftheHolyNameSociety, whichIpraywillcontinue foralltime,"HisLordship concluded.

theDiocesanUnion,gavea thoroughreportofthe society'sactivitiesduringthe pastyear.
DayofRosaries.-ThedevotionofthePassionSunday Rosarieswasheldbyall HolyNamemembersasa devotionofspecialintercessionfortheChurchunder persecutioninEuropeand Asia. Theireffortstodrawmore andmoreparishionerstoa continuousrecitationofthe Rosaryonthisdayhasmet withmountingresponseas eachyearwentby,andeven greaterresponsecanbeexpectedthisyear.
HolyNameRetreats.-Enclosedretreatslastyear touchedapeakfigureof275, whichexceededtheprevious yearby18.Theeightretreatsheldwereconducted bytheRevs.M.Timbs,F. HonanandL.Hansberryof theRedemtoristMonastery.
Inall,42branchesparticipated.TheBunburyDiocese respondedtoaninvitation with13membersfromfour oftheirbranches.The Cathedralbranchagain showedconspicuouszealby fillingawholeretreat.
Avoteofthankswas soundedtotheRedemptorist Communityforproviding thefacilities.
Apointerthegrowthof thisannualeventneeds onlyabackwardglance-to theinauguaralyearof1949 hentworetreatswereattendedby82members!
Arrangementsareafootto providethisyeareightretreatsfor29branches,of whichallwillbeadvised fully.
AnnualRally.-Heldon theHolyNameSundayin May,therally,intheestimationoftheCouncilwas themostoutstandingyet conducted.
HisGracetheArchbishop, whopresided,expressed pleasureofthepackedranks intheCathedralpews.
Therallythisyearwill againbeheldinMay.
AnnualProcession.-Ona counttaken,theattendance ofthelaityattheprocession lastyearwasoneofthe largestever.Theprocessionalroutewasalteredand thewholeprocessionmoved smoothlyundercontrolof anefficientorganisation.
Unlikelastyear,theturnoutoftheSocietyleftno unfilledgapsontheground spaceallocatedtoit.
HolyNameBursary.-Unfortunately,theBursary Fundwasnotreceivingthe fullsupportofallbranches. However,thosebranches thatdidnotcontributewere insomecasesmoregenerous thantheyhadbeeninthe past.
Inthepreviousyear31 outof69branchescontributed£.195/0/6,which,with thecollectionattherally, totalled£284/17711.last year37outof70branches donated£31912/9.which therallycontributionand interestbroughtupto £412/9/1.Therewasthus anincreaseof£127/11/2 overtheprecedingyear.
TheSociety,however,is notcontributingtocapacity andtenbrancheswhodoso
everyyeardidnotfigure amongthedonorslastyear.
BranchVisitation.-One oftheaimsoftheSociety embodiedintheconstitution isthatbranchesshouldbe assisted"todevelopandextendtheirinfluencebythe rightuseoftraditional prayers,ceremoniesand practices."
Toimplementthisthe unioncouncillorsareever readytovisitabranchand assistinanywaypossible. Seventeensuchvisitswere madelastyearandinmost caseswereofvaluetothe branchconcerned.
Thedearthofinvitations inaunionofsomany branches,however,can hardlygounnoticed.Overa yearitwouldbepossiblefor thecounciltocoveralmost everybranch.Theinvitation ofthebrancheswouldearn thegratefulco-operationof thecouncillors.
MembershipandAttendance.-Fromreportsreceivedfrom49branches,plus thelastknownfiguresof21 branchesthatdidnotsubmitreturns,itisrevealed thattheSocietyhaslosta totalof146members-82 seniorsand64juniors.
Overall,thecombined averageattendancefor seniorsandjuniorsoverthe pastyearwere:atHoly Communion69percentand ateveningdevotions38per cent,ascomparedto67per cent,and38percentrespectivelyforthepreviousyear. Here,inPerth,asinanyothercityintheworld,much mustbedonetoassistthejobless,manyofwhomwill neverbeabletoholdajob,thepensionerswhohave neitherhomenorfamilyandinmanycasesnoability tolookafterthemselves,andthenumerousphysically handicappedwho,despitepoorhealth,dependona meagrepensiontoekeoutanexistence.
Everycitizen,andnottheStateassuch,hasaserious moralobligationtoassistthesepeopleinsomeway.To mostofus,theopportunitytoassistrarely,ifever, arises,andwhenitdoes,theissuesareoftenclouded andwepassitbysomewhatlikethePriestandthe LeviteinSt.Luke'sGospelstoryoftheGoodSamaritan.
Muchis,however,beingdonetoassisttheverypoor ofPerth.Itisbeingdonequietlyandgenerouslyand withinsufficientassistance.
Forsomemonthsnow,inasmallshopinFitzgeraldstreet,WestPerth,agroupofwomen-allvolunteersleadbySisterVeronicaoftheDaughtersofCharity, havebeenrunningwhatisknownastheDePaulCentre.
Everydayoftheweek,freewholesomemealsare prepared-inmanycasestheonlywholesomefoodmany peoplewillhave.Bytheendofthisyear,itisanticipatedthatfiftythousandmealswillhavebeenserved totheneedy,freeofcharge.
TheCentreisnon-sectarian,andhasnomeanstest; anyoneisassistedirrespectiveofcolourorcreed-all theyhavetodoisask.
Despitetheheartachesanddisappointment,theDe PaulCentreisheretostay,andthenexthopeofSister Veronicaistoestablishanightshelterforwomen-a needlongoverdue.

Allbutthreeofthefamiliesliveinthefarmhouse. Thereisahugestone-flagged kitchenandapanelleddining-roomwithlong,handcarvedtables.
Thesearethejointlivingroomsandfortherest,each familyhasitsownfiatwith bed-sitting-roomsforsingle people.
Twofamilieshaveattractiveandroomyhalf-timberedbungalowsdesignedand builtbythemembers.
Themainworkisfarming. Inaddition,Douglas,the woodcarver,devoteswhat timecanbesparedtohis verybeautifulandorginal statuesandcrucifixes.
Hehasmadethechapel benches,refectorytablesand acrucifixforeveryfamily.
Looworksfulltimeinthe professionallyequippedpottery,whereaprobationer memberistrainingunder himandhelpingtoproduce thetraditionalEnglishpotterythatsellsinsomeof London'smostexclusive shops,aswellasdirect.
Thewomentaketurnsat cookingcommunitymeals, cleaningcommunalrooms, anddoingthelaundry.

Sofarthecommunityhas beenstrugglingtoestablish itselfandpayitsway.A farmofthissizeallowsfor subsistenceforthisnumber butlittlemore,andtheir wayoflifeisstillspartan.
Now,theyfeeltheywould liketotrytorespondto someoftheappealsmade tothemtounderetakevariouscharitableworks.
Therehasalwaysbeena traditionofhospitality,and peopleinallkindsofdifficultieshavedriftedthere, beenwelcomedwithout question,andallowedtoremainuntiltheirpersonal crisiswasresolved.

ThehistoryoftheCatholicPressinGermanyfalls intothreeperiods.Thefirstrangesfromtheearly19th centuryto1933,thesecondembracestheyearsofNazi power(1933-1945)andthethirdistheperiodsince theendofWorldWarII.

WhentheNazistookpowerin1933theytriedtoget ridofalloftheiropponents,includingtheCatholic Press.Despitetheirearlyefforts,thecirculationof Catholicnon-dailiesroseto11,500,000by1935.
SUPPRESSION
In1935theCatholicdailieswerecrushedwhenalaw wasdecreedstatingthatnodailycouldbepublishedfor orbyaspecialgroup.ThusCatholicdailiesbecame illegalandwereforcedoutofexistence.
AftertheeliminationoftheCatholicdailyPressthe Nazisbegantheirstruggleagainstthenon-dailies. Periodicalswereforbiddentopublishpoliticalnewsor commentsandwerestrictlycensored.Manynon-dailies werealsoforcedtosuspendpublicationbythesemeans.
AfterthewartheoncestrongCatholicdailyPress couldnotberebuilt,eveninWesternGermany,towhich allofthefollowingfiguresapply.Since1948onlynine smalldailieshavebeenestablished,allinSouthGermany.Theircombinedcirculationisbarelyoneper centofthetotalcirculationofallGermandailies.
ReplacingtheCatholicdailiesarepaper:whichrepresenttheinterestsofallChristians,Catholicand Protestant.Thissystemhasresultedfromthepolitical unionofthetwoChristiangroupsinonepoliticalparty, theChristianDemocratParty,whichasruledthe countrysinceitregaineditsindependence.These Christiandailiesaccountforabouttenpercentofthe totaldailynewspapercirculationinthenation.

Thakhek(A.I.F.)-On December19thlast,the ReverendR.Dubrouxofthe ParisForeignMissionSocietywasshottodeathin thesacristyofthemission stationofPalsyintheVicariateApostolicofThakhek,bycommunistrebelsof thePathetLao.
FatherDubrouxhadhis centralmissionresidencein Nonghkene.Onthedaythat hewasmurderedhehad walkedsixmiles,aswas frequentlyhiscustom,from thecentreofthesmallstationofPalay. InPalay, heusedthesacristyofthe smallmissionchapelashis lodgingplace.Hewasin thesacristyshortlybefore nineo'clockintheevening, inconversationwithtwo catechistsandanother.personofthemission,whenhe wasattacked.Hefelldead afterthefirstofthree shotsthatwerefiredupon him.
Immediatelyafterthe shotswerefired,threerebels ofthePathetLaoclimbed theimprovisedstairwayto theroomwherethepriest laydeadandsearchedhim.
Itiscertainthatthis crimewasorganisedbefore hand.Ittookplaceata timewhenthevillageof Palaywasextremelyquiet, becauseagentshadgone throughthevillagesome timeearliertowarnthe peoplethattheymustnot leavetheirhomes.Atthe momentthatthecrimewas perpetratedinPalay,some fortyrebelsofthePethet Laopillagedthepriest's residenceinNonghkene.
