Hewasbornin1897inWestMelbourne,the eldestofsevenchildren.Hisfatherwasapolicemanwhorosetosuperintendent.Mr.Calwellwas educatedattheChristianBrothers'Collegeat NorthMelbourne.

Thethirdannualsununer school,heldatSt.Thomas MoreCollege,lastweekendwasthemostsuccessfulyetheld.ItwasorganisedbytheNewmanSociety,theofficialCatholic society,attheUniversity, andwasdesignedtointroducenewCatholicstudents totheUniversitywayof lifeandtoenablethemto meetotherCatholicstudents withwhomtheywillbeassociatedduringthescholasticyear. Inbothoftheseaimsit succeededadmirably.The talksanddiscussionswhich wereheld,introducedthe studentstoalmosteveryaspectofaCatholic'sUniversitylife-thespirituallife, theworkoftheUniversity apostolate,theworkofthe NewmanSociety,theaffairs ofstudentsingeneral,the organisationoftheGuildof Undergraduates,andfinally, themainideasandpeople encounteredattheUniversity. Itachievedthesecond aimoflettingfreshersmeet eachotherbywayofinformalsocialsheldonFriday andSaturdaynights.However,italsoachievedathird purposewhichtheorganisers hadnotspecificallyplanned for.

Althoughthesummer schoolwasnotaretreat, itdidenablesecondand later-yearstudentstothink aboutanddiscusstheir faithintheinformaldiscussionswhichfollowedthe talks.

Unfortunately,theschool wassopopularthatmany whoappliedhadtobeturneddowpbecauseoflimited accommodation.However, moststudentswhocould notlivein,camealongto thetalks,discussionsand socials.

Meanwhile,theIndonesiansarereportedtobe quietlyinfiltratingthecoastalareasofwhattheycall WestIrian.Sukarno,buttressedbythehugeSoviet loanandtheverbalsupportofKhrushchevforhis expansionistambitions,hasdisembarrassedhimselfof parliamentarycriticismandrulesthecountryas dictator.Whatsecretdiplomacywasatworkduring Khrushchev'svisithasnotbeenrevealed,buttheperil ofIndonesia'sgivingtheSovietafreehandinthe matterofbasescannotbewipedoffbyofficialdisclaimersoneitherside.ItisknownthattheSoviet istryingtoestablishmissileandsatellitetracking stationsinIndonesiaandCubaandKhrushchevis certainlyworriedaboutthedefencepactbetweenthe UnitedStatesandJapan.

ItisclearthattheDutchhavenointentionofmaintainingtheirinterestsinNewGuineaanylongerthan thepoliticalmaturityoftheindigenouspopulation demands.OurFederalGovernmentinitsunderstanding withDr.Subandrioseemstoconcurinthatview.But itcanscarcelyberegardedasapermanentoreven satisfactoryarrangementfortworeason.Firstly,the IndonesianshavenotthepatienceoftheDutchand arenotwillingtoattenduponanevolutionaryprocess. TheydonotagreethatDutchNewGuineashouldpass underthecontrolofitsinhabitants.Theywantitand theyintendtogetit.byforceofarmsifnecessary. Thesupposed-to-be-eye-catchingverbiagewhichhits onefromthelatterpagesofournewspapersadvertising whatissupposedtobeentertainmentisaprime exampleofthedangerousformsoflibertymentioned byPopeJohnrecently.

Innearlyeverycasethesplurgeofwordswouldbe absolutelymisleadingandhavelittleornoconnection withtheactionofthemovieconcerned.Thecensor simplywouldnotletitthrough.Yetthewordsare usedtoconjureupinthemindofthereadersome startlingrevelationsthathaveneverbeforebeenseen onthescreen.

Somerecentinvitationstothegeneralpublic:"It's thatred-hotpictureaboutthatnight-timegirl;""A shockerinfrankness;""Thehottestexposuresinceman createdfilm;""Themostnotoriousmemberofa notoriouswalkoflife."Onemightsaythatnothing islefttotheimigination,butthepointisthateverythingisbeinglefttotheimagination-anditiscertainlyappealingtotheimaginationwithpunchlines suchasthese.Thesketchesthatgowitheachadvertisementemphasiseexposedbosoms,baredbacksfrom rippeddresses(ifsuchcanbecalleddresses).Infact, theydonotappealtothecuriosity,butseemtobe makingapointofappealingtothedepravityofpeople whotheyhopewillpaymoneytobe"entertained."

Theseexampleshavenotbeensingledoutasthe exceptions-theyrunalmostcontinuouslyandmislead almostcontinuouslyanddoharmcontinuously.

Wheredoestheresponsibilitylie?Whatcanbedone totoneuptheall-timelowoffilmadvertising?What areitseffects?

Dealingwiththelastquestion,itcanplayhavocwith theuninformedandthemindoftheyounginitsformation.Itcouldenablethemtoseeorreadmoreintoa scenethanis(possibly)meantbytheproducer.It certainlypredisposesthemtowardsthis.Theaudience will,ashashappened,modelthemselvesonwhatthey see.Thecensormightcutruthlesslyfromascene,yet iftheadvertisinghassuppliedthemissingidea,the censorhasachievedverylittle.

Theresponsibilityultimatelylieswiththeproducers ofthefilms.Itispresumedthattheysendoutthe stereotypestoadvertiseeachoftheirproducts.The localofficesimplyreceiveswhatitgetsaridthenpasses itontothelocalpapers.Thisofficeistheagentacting onbehalfofaprincipal,yetitmusthavesomesay.

Expressionsusedbythosewhowillnotwanttobe movedonmoralmatterswillrunalonglinessuchas: "Tothepureallthingsarepure;""Onemaynotcoerce libertyortherightofinformation;""Itiseducation."

Publicdemandforaprotectionofpublicmoralsfrom thissourceoughttobeinsistent.Oftensomegood showsarecheapenedbytheadvertising,butmoreoften thannotthewordsandthesketchesgivenareintended toappealtothedepravedtasteandthehopeofseeing somethingwhichcouldnotbeseenexceptinthemore sordidpathsoflife.Thereasonbeingsolelytoput moneyintothetheatrebox-officesandultimatelyto theproducers'bankaccounts.

THEDAUGHTERSOFCHARITY

Meantime,inParis,theConfraternities,afteraperiod ofzeal,begantolosetheireffectiveness.Theirmembers weremostlyofthearistocracyoruppermiddleclass, unaccustomedtomanualworkandtomeetingintimatelythedistressedpoorandsick.Theydeputed theirservicestotheirservantsandemployees,which thusdestroyedthenatureandinterestoftheirsharing, aswellaslesseningthebenefitstothoseinwant.forthe servantshadlittlecharityinit.

Vincenthadnowtomeetthisfailure,andindiscussionwithLouise,sheagreedwithhisproposal.They wouldtrytogettheservicesofsomekind-heartedgirls fromthecountrydistricts,whocouldworkunderthe guidanceoftheLadiesoftheConfraternities,andbe devotedsolelytocharitableworks.Louisehadfound somesuchinhertravels,andthiswasseenasagood solutionfortheproblem.

BEGINNINGSOFTHECOMMUNITY

Thefirstgirl,MargaretNaseau,cameofherown accord.Shehadlearnedtoread,andhadbeendoing somevoluntaryteachingofthecatechismamongthe girlsatVillepreux,andhearingabouttheConfraternity atParis,shepresentedherselftoLouise,offeringher help.Sheis,infact,thefirstDaughterofCharity.She metanearlydeathbecauseoftakingaplague-stricken girltosleepinherownbed.Afewgirlsthatshehad knownfollowedhertoParis,andLouisechoseafew moreonherrounds.Thesewereforatimeplacedwith theladies,butthiswasanawkwardarrangement. Louisewasthenbeginningtoseethepossibilityofa communityofsuchgirls-herhopeforsomesortof conventliferevivingagain-butVincentdampedher enthusiasm.

Atthattimeitwasrareformembersofanywomen's communitytoengageinworksoutsidetheirconvents, anditwasanunknownthinginParis;Vincentcould notseehowitmightbearranged,andhemusthave theirexternalaidornoneatall.Atlast,attheendof November,1633,Louisetookthegirlsintoherown

housetoteachandtraintheminlivingreligiously together,topreparethemfortheirduties-tomake mealsandmedicines,todothehouseancitliundry,to nursetheoldandtheyoung,andtoteachthecatechism. ThatwasthecommencementoftheConfraternityof theDaughtersofCharity.Ithadbeenslowandroundabout,andseeminglyanaimlessquest,butLouisehad nowfoundhervocationagain,forthehandofProvidencehadbeenwithher.

DEVELOPMENTS

FromthisdatetheCommunitygrewinnumbersand works.Attheendofayeartherewere12Sisters;at theFoundress'death,20yearslater,theSisterswerein everydiocese,alloverFrance.Theiremploymentem- bracedschools,hospitals,foundlingandorphanhomes, thevisitingofprisonsandofthepoorathome.Because ofcivilandexternalwars,therewasanendlesssufferinganddistressthroughoutFranceinthatcentury,so therewasnolackofscopefortheirservices.Theytook thetitleof"ServantsoftheSickPoor."St.Vincent lovedtoremindthemthattheywereDaughtersof Charity,andthat,sinceGodischarity,theywere DaughtersofGod. St.Louisenowhadthetaskofoverseeingand regulatingtherecruitingandthetraining,andof arrangingtheconductandthemanagementofthemany branchesofhercommunity,duringthenext20years. Girlscamefromthecountryandfromthecity,from thepeasantstockandfromthenobility,whoshehad tomouldfortheirspecialvocation.Itwasaserious burden,growingwithtimeandnumbers.

HERDEATH

Herfrailhealthwasnearbreakingpointin1658,but withherfeversandpains,sherespondedtoVincent's urging.ThenshebecameunableeventogotoMass. Thenextyear,Vincenthimself,nownearlyeighty,was confinedtohisroom,andtheywerenotabletomeet again."Godhasdeprivedmeofthiscomfort,"wrote Louise."whichhisGoodnessgavemeforthelast38 years."ShewasgiventheLastSacramentsinFebruary, 1660.Shehopedforalastnoteofcomfortandstrength fromVincent,buthesentheronlyaverbalmessage: "Youarethefirsttosetout;ifGodforgivesmemysins, 1hopesoontorejoinyouinheaven."

ItwasMarch15,1660.whenshediedpeacefully,in thecircleofherDaughters,wornoutandsanctifiedby herstrenuouscaresforthewelfareofthepoor.

THEDAUGHTERSOFCHARITY

Meantime,inParis,theConfraternities,afteraperiod ofzeal,begantolosetheireffectiveness.Theirmembers weremostlyofthearistocracyoruppermiddleclass, unaccustomedtomanualworkandtomeetingintimatelythedistressedpoorandsick.Theydeputed theirservicestotheirservantsandemployees,which thusdestroyedthenatureandinterestoftheirsharing, aswellaslesseningthebenefitstothoseinwant.forthe servantshadlittlecharityinit.

Vincenthadnowtomeetthisfailure,andindiscussionwithLouise,sheagreedwithhisproposal.They wouldtrytogettheservicesofsomekind-heartedgirls fromthecountrydistricts,whocouldworkunderthe guidanceoftheLadiesoftheConfraternities,andbe devotedsolelytocharitableworks.Louisehadfound somesuchinhertravels,andthiswasseenasagood solutionfortheproblem.

BEGINNINGSOFTHECOMMUNITY

Thefirstgirl,MargaretNaseau,cameofherown accord.Shehadlearnedtoread,andhadbeendoing somevoluntaryteachingofthecatechismamongthe girlsatVillepreux,andhearingabouttheConfraternity atParis,shepresentedherselftoLouise,offeringher help.Sheis.infact,thefirstDaughterofCharity.She metanearlydeathbecauseoftakingaplague-stricken girltosleepinherownbed.Afewgirlsthatshehad knownfollowedhertoParis,andLouisechoseafew moreonherrounds.Thesewereforatimeplacedwith theladies,butthiswasanawkwardarrangement. Louisewasthenbeginningtoseethepossibilityofa communityofsuchgirls-herhopeforsomesortof conventliferevivingagain-butVincentdampedher enthusiasm.

Atthattimeitwasrareformembersofanywomen's communitytoengageinworksoutsidetheirconvents, anditwasanunknownthinginParis;Vincentcould notseehowitmightbearranged,andhemusthave theirexternalaidornoneatall.Atlast,attheendof November,1633,Louisetookthegirlsintoherown

housetoteachandtraintheminlivingreligiously together,topreparethanfortheirduties-tomake mealsandmedicines,todothehouseandieundry,to nursetheoldandtheyoung,andtoteachthecatechism.

ThatwasthecommencementoftheConfraternityof theDaughtersofCharity.Ithadbeenslowandroundabout,andseeminglyanaimlessquest,butLouisehad nowfoundhervocationagain,forthehandofProvidencehadbeenwithher.

DEVELOPMENTS

FromthisdatetheCommunitygrewinnumbersand works.Attheendofayeartherewere12Sisters;at theFoundress'death,20yearslater,theSisterswerein everydiocese,alloverFrance.Theiremploymentembracedschools,hospitals,foundlingandorphanhomes, thevisitingofprisonsandofthepoorathome.Because ofcivilandexternalwars,therewasanendlesssufferinganddistressthroughoutFranceinthatcentury,so therewasnolackofscopefortheirservices.Theytook thetitleof"ServantsoftheSickPoor."St.Vincent lovedtoremindthemthattheywereDaughtersof Charity,andthat,sinceGodischarity,theywere DaughtersofGod.

St.Louisenowhadthetaskofoverseeingand regulatingtherecruitingandthetraining,andof arrangingtheconductandthemanagementofthemany branchesofhercommunity,duringthenext20years. Girlscamefromthecountryandfromthecity,from thepeasantstockandfromthenobility,whoshehad tomouldfortheirspecialvocation.Itwasaserious burden,growingwithtimeandnumbers.

HERDEATH

Herfrailhealthwasnearbreakingpointin1658,but withherfeversandpains,sherespondedtoVincent's urging.ThenshebecameunableeventogotoMass. Thenextyear,Vincenthimself,nownearlyeighty,was confinedtohisroom,andtheywerenotabletomeet again."Godhasdeprivedmeofthiscomfort,"wrote Louise,"whichhisGoodnessgavemeforthelast38 years."ShewasgiventheLastSacramentsinFebruary, 1660.Shehopedforalastnoteofcomfortandstrength fromVincent,buthesentheronlyaverbalmessage: "Youarethefirsttosetout;ifGodforgivesmemysins, Ihopesoontorejoinyouinheaven."

ItwasMarch15,1660,whenshediedpeacefully,in thecircleofherDaughters,wornoutandsanctifiedby herstrenuouscaresforthewelfareofthepoor.

St.Vincent'ssummaryofherlifewasbrief:"Shewas asoulthatwaspureinallthings;pureinheryouth, pureinhermarriedlife,pureinherwidowhood."He hadjudgedwellhercapabilitieswhenhefirstmether, andperceivingherzealinholiness,hadgraduallyled hertotheperfectionofobedience,andfullyfosteredin herthefireofcharity,which_shehasleftandfanned intofar-flungflames,throughtheagencyofher Daughtersamongthepooroftheworld.

ItisknownthatHisHolinessPopeJohnXXIIIhas recentlybeengivingpersonalattentiontoexamining synthesesofthereportsthatcamefrombishops throughouttheworld.Thisisinterpretedas-anunmistakablesignthattheworkoftheante-preparatory commissionhasprogressedtosuchanadvancedstage thatitwillsoonwindupitsfunctionsandmakeway forthecommissionsconcernedwiththeimmediate preparationforthecouncil.

Theante-preparatorycommissionwasinstitutedon May16,1959-lessthanfourmonthsafterthePope revealedhisintentiontosummonageneralcouncilunderthepresidencyofHisEminenceDomenicoCardinalTardini,VaticanSecretaryofState.ThecommissioniscomposedoftenprelatesoftheRomanCuria inadditiontotheCardinal,andhasafour-mansecretariat.

ThecommissionwaschargedbythePopewithfour tasks:

TocontacttheCatholicepiscopatethroughoutthe world,askingthebishops'counselandsuggestions onthemattersthecouncilshoulddealwith.

TocollecttheproposalsmadebytheRomancongregationswhichadministertheaffairsoftheUniversal Church.

Totracethegenerallinesoftopicssuggestedfor considerationbythecouncil,andseektheopinions ofthetheologicalandcanonlawfacultiesofthe Catholicuniversities.

ObjectionableMoviesOnIncrease

Thenumberofobjectionablemoviesshown inItalyinthepastthreeyearshassteadily increased,theCatholicFilmCentreofItaly hasreported.

TheCentre,whichisthe counterpartoftheAmericanLegionofDecency,reportedthetotalofnegativelyjudgedmovieshasincreasedfrom19p.c.in1957, to27p.c.in1958andto31 p.c.in1959.

Ofthe538filmsreviewed in1959bythecentreonly 40-about7p.c.-were judgedsuitableforall. Some films-about61 p.c.-werejudgedsuitable foradults.Ofthese,almost halfweirjudgedassuitable butwithreservations.

Thenumberofmovies shownin1959whichwere termed"unadvisable"or "absolutelyinadmissable" forviewingnumbered168, or31p.c.ofthetotalnumberexhibited.

Abreakdownofnational productionshowedthat33

p.c.oftheobjectionable filmswereproducedinItaly andthat55p.c.oftherest co-operationwiththeItalianfilmindustry.

ItQuotidiano,Rome's dailyCatholicActionnewspaper,commented: "Thesearealarming statistics,particularlyas seenincomparisonwiththe statisticsofpastyears.They showaprogressivemoral deterioration."

Tomakerecommendationsonthecompositionofthe variouspreparatorycommissionsneededforthefinal preparationforthecouncil.

Thefirstofthetasksisnowcomplete.Lettersasking forsuggestionsweresentto2.700bishopsandother highchurchmen.About80percentofthosequeried haveanswered-apercentagethecommissionconsiders ahighlysatisfactoryresponse.

Theproposalsmadebythebishopshaveallbeen catalogued,accordingtomaintopicsandsub-topics,on 2,100filecards.Thesehavebeensynthesisedaccording tonations,andittothesesynthesesthatthePopeisnow givinghispersonalscrutiny.

Thedeadlineforthesecondtask-gatheringproposals fromtheRomancongregations-isMarch15.

Thefirstpartofthecommission'sthirdduty-developingageneraloutlineoftopicsforthecouncilto consider-hasalreadybeencompletedthroughthe card-indexingproject.Thesecondpartofthetaskcollectingtheviewsoftheologiansandcanonlaw experts-istobecompletedthisspring(autumnin Australia).Thereportsfromtheuniversitiesaredue inApril.

Thelasttask-therecommendationsconcerningthe preparatorycommissions-remainstobedone.

Itisreportedthatinadditiontostudyingthereports onthebishops'suggestions,PopeJohnhasalsobeguna study,ofhistoricdocumentsrelatingtothe20past ecumenicalcouncils.

Fromalltheseelementsitisclearthattheworkof theantepreparatorycommissionisalmostcomplete.In fact,thesecretariatofthecommission,whichuntilmidFebruarywasworkingfull-time,isnowknowntobeon atemporaryhalf-dayschedule.

Thelogicalquestion,then,is:Whenwillthepreparatorycommissionbeginwork?

ConsideringthefactthatitisthePope'swishthatit proceedasquicklyaspossible,workwilldoubtless beginassoonastheante-preparatorycommissionhas finisheditstasks.Thebestguesshereisthatthiswill besometimeduringthesummer(winterhere).

SecularInstituteCompleted LourdesBasilicaForCentenary

Thesecularinstitutethatmadepossible thecompletionofthehugeunderground churchatthegrottofortheLourdescentenarycelebrationtwoyearsagoisdiscontinuing itsworkattheChurch.

Thedecisionoftheinstitute,OpusCenaculi,was made"independently,"accordingtoBishopPierre MarieTheasofTarbesand Lourdes.TheBishophad receivedtheco-operationof theinstituteatatimewhen thecompletionofthechurch, nowthesecondlargestin theworld,appearedfinanciallyimpossible. BishopTheassaidina communiquethathewasexpressinghisgratitudetothe secularinstitutebynaming threeofitspriestleadersashonorarychaplainsof Lourdes.

OneofthemisMgr. GeorgesRoche,whofoundedOpusCenaculiin1952and isitssuperior.Theothers areFatherGerardPapin, vicargeneralofOpusCenaculi,andFatherAlphonse Tricot,amemberoftheinstitute.

OpusCenaculi,whichhas itsheadquartersinRome,is composedofpriestsandlaymenwholiveinpoverty, chastityandobedience,and dedicatethemselvestohelpingpriestsandaidingthe workoftheChurch.Its directorhasbeenHisEminenceEugeneCardinalTisserant,DeanoftheSacred CollegeofCardinals.

Tileundergroundchurch

project,conceivedbyBishopTheasin1955,wasdesignedtoaccommodatethe vastthrongsofpeoplewho cometoLourdes.The churchwasbuiltundergroundtoavoidintrusionof thearchitecturalharmonyof theolderchuchessurmountingthecavewheretheBlessedVirginappearedtoSt. Bernadettein1858.The churchcanhold20,000persons. Itwasconsecrated onMarch25,1958,byCardinalAngeloGiuseppeRoncalli,thenPatriarchof Venice,andnowHisHoliness PopeJohnXXIII.

Numerousengineeringdifficultieswereencounteredin theconstructionofthe Church,andbuildingwas suspendedafterfourmonths becauseofalackoffunds. InJanuary,1957,Bishop TheasobtainedthecollaborationofOpusCenaculi. Thesecularinstitutewasentrustedwithseekingaidon aninternationalscale.

AnInternationalLourdes Committeewasestablished underthepresidencyofCardinalTisserant,andasubdivisionofthecommittee, knownasthe"Associationof theFriendsofLourdes,"was entrustedwithadministration oftheshrinesofLourdes.

ARuggedParishTo-StartOn

Theyoungmissionary'sfirstassignment wasGreenland-all827,300ruggedsquare milesofit.

LastJulyFatherMichaelWolfe,O.M.L.ofChicago, becamethefirstmissionarypriesttosetfootonGreenlandsincetheMiddleAges. Hefacedajaggedterrain,amarrow-coldclimateand thetaskofintroducingtheChurchto23,000reportedly hostilepeople,onlytwoofthemnativeCatholics.An icecapofupto10,000feetcoversfour-fifthsoftheland. Theonlyindustriesarefishingandmining.

AtGodthaabFatherWolfealsosuppliedthesolemn ritesofBaptismtotheveryfirstmoderninfantGreenlander,MargaretChemnitz.Hermother,aDanish Catholic,hadbaptisedthechildafterbirththeprevious March.

TheotherGreenlandCatholicisaconvert,Finn Lynge.whobecameacquaintedwiththeChurchwhile studyinginCopenhagen.Mr.Lynge,26,hasbecome anOblateofMaryImmaculateandisnowstudyingfor thepriesthoodinPassChristian,Missouri.Likemost Greenlanders,Mr.LyngeisofmixedEskimo-Danish blood.

Notingthatthemajority oftheobjectionablefilms involvedpointsofsensuality,thepapersaid,"Our societybecomesguiltyofa verygravecrimeagainst thenewgenerationswho aregrowingup-andthis isalsothefaultofthemovie industry-inaclimateof materialism,sensualityand uncontrolledlicense."

Capableofhandlingclose on3,000birthsayear,the MaternityHomeisthelargestprivateoneinWestern Australia.

Situatedonaneminence over-lookingtheCityand theSwanRiver,thismagnificentU-shapedbuilding stretchesfor191feetalong EllesmereRoad,withside wingsof128feetand83feet enclosingacourtyard.It isartisticinappearance withcantileveredbalconies gentlycurvedabovethe mainentrance. TheSudan'scampaignagainstChristianityinitseffortstopromotetheMos; lemreligionhasresultedintheexpulsion of20Catholicmissionariesduringthepost threeyears.

Theseexpulsionsarebut themostrecentresultsofa policyoftheMoslem-dominatedgovernmentthathas beendescribedintheSudaneseandEgyptianpressas

aimingatthegradualeliminationofChristianityfrom thecountry.

NationDivided TheSudan,anation nearlyathirdaslargeas theU.S.,whichwonitsindependencefromBritain andEgyptin1956,isdividedraciallyandreligiously. Thenorthernregionhasa majorityofMoslempeoples ofArabstock.Thesouth, whichcontainsabouta quarterofthecountry's nearly11millionpeople, hasaNegropopulation, mostofwhomarepagans. Thereareabout200,000 CatholicsintheSudan, nearlyallinthesouth.

ItisstrangethatthisspecificallyCatholicmasterpieceshouldbemorewidelyappreciatedbynonCatholics.Thereasonmay perhapsbefoundinthe namesoftheorchestraand thechoir.InLancashire andYorkshire,Handel's "Messiah"isasmuchapart ofChristmastotheNonconformistsasMidnight MassistotheCatholics. Withchoralmusicbredin thebone,itisnaturalfor themtoturntoanynew masterpiece.

ThisscholarlyworkbyFatherPhillipHughesappearedinthree volumesaboutsixyearsago. Ireadthefirsttwosections,"The King'sProceedings"and"ReligioDepopulata"aboutthattime,-cuad wonderedwhethersomeonemightonedayreducethecompletework toapopularedition,bycuttingoutthefootnotesandeditingoutsome ofthelessimportantdigressions.

Suchataskwouldnotbe verydifficult,andhasbeen donereasonablywellwith Toynbee's"AStudyofHistory,"butIsupposeitis lesslikelywithabookof thisnature.

InthemeantimeVolume IIIappeared,andIcould notseehowitwouldfit intothiscolumnwhereI tendtolookforbookswith areasonablywideappeal, withtheresultthatIneglectedtocompletemyown reading.Thethirdvolume dealswiththeReformation underElizabeth;thefirst twocoveredHenryVIIIand Mary.

RecentlyIborrowedit, andrealisedthatthisvolumehasamuchwiderappealthantheothertwo.

Firstlyitdealswithaperiod ofhistoryaboutwhichwe aremorefamiliarfromour ownschooldays,and,secondly,thestoryoftheReformationunderElizabeth hasacoherenceandintelligibilitywhichislackingunderherpredecessors.

Henryhadnofixedplan inhisestablishmentofan EnglishChurch.Hewasnot evenconvincedthathewas doingtherightthing,and, asaresult,sufferedfrom excruciatingpangsofconscience. Heactedpurely frompersonal,andvery carnal,motives,andconsequentlyhadnofixedpolicy apartfromshruggingoffthe authorityofthePopeand replentishinghisempty coffersfromthewealthof themonasteries.

MaryhadafixedpolicytorestoretheChurchtoits oldposition,butshelacked thestrength,andsuffered frompooradvice.Theresultwasthatshewavered betweenextremefirmness andvacillatingcompromise.

ItisunderElizabeththat theReformationinEngland realytakesadefiniteshape, andaninflexibledirection, andthatiswhatmakesthis thirdvolume,"TrueReligionNowEstablished,"so muchmorereadablethanits predecessors, FatherHughesmakestwo pointsclearwhichIhave neverbeforethoroughlyappreciated.Thefirstisthat Elizabethhadnoreligious convictionsatall;allshe wasinterestedinwasthe consolidationofthepowerof thethrone,andthetitleof "SupremeHead"strengthenedherposition.The EnglishChurchwas,in future,tobeaweaponin herhands,andshewasjust asmercilesstowardsnonconformingsubjectsfrom theCalvanists'sideasshe

wastowardstheCatholics.

Secondly,FatherHughes paystributetoCecilasthe greateststatesmanEngland haseverhad.Usually,in bookswrittenbyCatholiz. historians,CecilisrememberedonlyforhispersecutionoftheCatholicpeople ofEngland.Whatisforgottenisthegeniusofthe manwhoknittedthepeople andtheThroneintoaunitednation,and,onthefinancialside,raisedEngland fromnearbankruptcyto powerandwealth.

Whiletheloversoffirstratehistorybookswillneed nointroductiontothismagnificentwork,Ifeltit woulddonoharmtorecommendthethirdvolumetoa muchwideraudience.It canbe',Tadwithoutreferencetotheothertwo,and itdealswithaperiodof tremendousinteresttoall Catholics,thepert:dwhen Englandwaslosttothe Faith-onecouldalmostsay "forciblydraggedaway."
