Onereasonhesaid,was thattheChurchfearedviolentrepercussionsagainst theclergyandhierarchyon theChinamainland. He indicatedthatnowthisconsiderationseemstomake littledifference.
CardinalTien principle,becausetheyare militantatheists;infact, becausetheyarenowengagedinanall-outeffort toseveralltieswithRome andcreateaschismatic nationalchurch.Underthese circumstancesnoimprovementofrelationsispossible, hesaid.
Askedifanyarrangementsuchasthatworked outinPolandmightbeemployedinChina,hesaid thereisnocomparisonbetweentheconditionsin PolandandChina.In PolandCatholicsareamajorityand,relativelyspeaking,arewellorganised.In China,Catholicsareaminorityand,evenatitsbest, theChuch'sorganisation therewasalwayshampered bygreatdistancesandother factors.
HowdoestheChurch's futurelookonFormosa?
TheCardinalsaidthatin 10years.theCatholicpopulationhasgrownfrom 12,000to200.000anditwill growstillmore.Catholic populationnowconstitutes twopercentofthe10millionpopulation.There arenowbetweenfourand fivehundredprieststoserve them.Withthedevelopment ofeducationandthereturn toFormosaofthescatteredChinesepriests-anotheroftheCardinal'sprojects-theChurchwill growevenmoreandfaster.

ThelateMrs.Carroll,formerlyMissMargaretCurtin, cametotheGoldfieldsfrom Newcastle,NewSouth Wales,intheearly1900's.
In1913shemarriedthe lateLawrenceCarrollat Boulderandsettleddownin Kalgoorlie,whereshelived untilherdeath.Shewas pre-deceasedbyherhusbandin1945.
ThelateMrs.Carrollwas afoundationmemberofthe ChristianBrothers'College ParentsandFriendsAssociation,Kalgoorlie.Shewasa ferventmemberofthe SacredHeartSodality.

WhilethePrimeMinister'sproposalsreadvery sanely,itwillbeamootpointastowhatreactionthe raisingofthetariffwallwillprovoke.Itcouldgivea stimulustocombinesandmonopolies.Themenwho areintentortconcentratingeconomicpowerintheir handsirrespectiveofthepublicgoodmaywellfeelthat aunitedfrontwillbestmeetanexternalchallenge. Theirtrainingisthorough. Afterhighschoolthereisa six-monthpostulancy,followedbyatwo-yearnovitiate.Thentherearethree yearsofstudyandthree yearsofapostolate-and onlythenaretheysentout onassignment,Theirtrainingisprimarilyinthe
sacredsciences,secondarily inlanguagesandthefine arts.Thereisanemphasis onthestudyofcomparative religion. Theironlyidentification asLadiesofBethanyisa smallgoldcrosssuspended aroundtheneck.Thosewho wereoncecontemplativesin thesocietywearasimple goldenring.
In1959theLadiesof Bethanyserved779nonCatholics,695Protestants, sixOrthodox,nineJews, twoMoslems,oneHinduand 66ofunknowndenomination.Thesevisitorscame fromfivedifferentcontinentsandbelongedto33 differentnationalities.The languagedifferencescreated noproblemfortheLadies. TheyspeakDutch,German French,EnglishandItalian., TheLadiesseldomseethe fruitsofthelabours.Occasionally,though,theywill receivealettersuchasone recentlythat,said:

TheelectionswerewonbythefactionofthePeople's Anti-FascistFreedomLeagueheadedbyformer PremierUNu,whosecampaignpromisetomake Buddhismtheofficialreligionwasregardedasoneof themajorissuesoftheelection.
Non-Buddhists,however,willinnowaysufferfrom hiseffortstomakegoodonhispromise,Mr.UNuhas stated.

Thecommission'staskistoreviewtheLatin formandtoadaptittomodernusage.Thiswillbe doneinthelightofastudymadeofthenewversion ofthePsalmsbyLatinscholarssinceitspublication ontheFeastofChristtheKing,1944.

Burma,aSouth-EastAsiannationwithapopulation ofabout20million,becameindependentin1948after centuriesofdominationbyGreatBritain.About90per centoftheBurmeseareBuddhists.Thereare177,425 Catholicsinthecountry.
ThecountrywasruledbytheAnti-FascistLeaguewhichbeganasaresistancemovementduringthewar -untilOctober.1958.Atthattimeapartysplitledto theresignationofPremierUNuandtheassumptionof controlbythearmyunderGeneralNeWin.Mr.UNu becameheadoftheso-called"Clean"factionofthe leaguewhichdefeatedthe"Stable"factionheadedby formerPremierBaSweintheelectionsthismonth.
ArmyEnlightenmentSuccess
Sinceashorttimeafterwinningindependencethis countryhasbeenplaguedbyacommunistrebellion whichhasresultedinalmostconstantguerrillafighting. Throughoutitsyearandahalfinpowerthearmy carriedonanunrelentingcampaignagainstRedinsurgentsinthefield.Italsostrovetoenlightenthe BurmesemassestothedangerstoBuddhismfrom communism.DuringthattimethenumberofRed insurgentswasreducedfrom30,000to5,000.
Thesuccessofthearmyregime'senlightenment campaignisevidentfromthebadbeatingtakeninthe electionbythepro-communistNationalUnitedFront. Inpossessionof46seatsinthelastParliament,latest electionreturnsshowedthatitwillnowhaveonlythree inthenewlegislature.
Anotherindicationofthedeclineofcommunist prestigehereisthelukewarmreceptiongiventoSoviet PremierNikitaKhrushchevduringhispost-election visit,comparedwiththeenthusiasticwelcomeaccorded himin1955.
SomeobserversbelievethatUNu'svictoryoverthe favoured"Stable"faction-whichhadsoughtto identifyitselfasfriendlytothecountry'smilitary rulers-isduetothearmy'senlightenmentefforts.It issaidthatthearmy'swarningagainsttheReddanger toBuddhismcreatedareligiousfervourinthecountry andmadevotersfavourabletoMr.UNu'spromiseto makeBuddhismtheStatereligion.
Ithasalsobeenpointedoutthathostilitytomilitary ruleworkedagainstthefactionthatidentifieditself withthearmy.Despitethegoodworkdonebythe army,manypersonsreportedlysufferedfromtheharsh measurestakenbysomeofficersandshowedtheirdispleasurebyvotingforMr.UNu.
TheChurchinBurmaisshowingsignsofconsiderable progressafterthedevastationofWorldWarIIandthe unrestcausedbyguerrillawarfareagainsttheRedsand governmentrestrictionsagainsttheentryofmissionaries.
LeaderoftheChurchinBurmaaretheheadsofits twoArchdioceses,RangoonandMandalay.Thenewly appointedheadofthelatterSee,ArchbishopJosephU Win,isthefirstnativeBurmesetoholdthetitleof Archbishop.
