Afterhearingthesetalks Dr.Raffertythankedthe organisersoftheWeakand thestaffofSt.Thomas MoreCollege.Summarising thefournightsofaddressesanddiscussions,hesaid:.

"Afterallyouhaveheard duringtheweekI'msure youhaveaveryclearpictureofwhatwemean whenwespeakofthelay apostolate,andfromthe lecturesIfeel,willhave emergedthreeimportant pointsaboutthelayapostolate.

"ThesecondpointIthink thatwouldhaveemerged wouldbethattodoanythingeffectiveinregardto thesanctificationofsouls totheChristianisingofour environment nomatter whatitmightbe,demands ofuspersonally,aneffort tosanctifyourselvesandto moredeeplyChristianise ourselvesinourthinking andinacting.

"Itisanoldadagethat wecannotgivewhatwe havenotgot,youcannot sanctifyanybodyunlessyou firsttrytosanctifyyourself,youcannotChristianiseanyenvironmentuntil youChristianiseyourown lifefirst.

"Thirdly,perhaps,the pointthatwouldemergeis thattodosomethingvery effectiveinthatwaymeans organisation,thatindividual effortofthatkinddoesnot countagreatdeal.

Thestatisticswerecontainedinthecongregation's reportcarriedinthenewlyissued"Activitiesofthe HolySeein1959."Initspreviousstatisticalreport, issuedin1957withfiguresfortheendof1955,thecongregationlisted990seminarieswith140,500students.

Europein1957had905seminaries,including243 majorseminaries,558minorseminariesand104preseminaries.Totalenrolmentwas101,353.

InNorthandSouthAmericatherewere521seminaries,including144majorones,206minorseminaries and101preseminaries.Totalenrolmentwas55,330.

Unifyingthemissionaryeffortanddevelopinghighereducationarethetwomaintasks hewillfaceinhisnewpostinFormosa,His EminenceThomasCardinalTien,S.V.D.,said whileinRome.

TheCardinal,recently namedApostolicAdministratorofFormosa'sTaipei archdiocese,isstoppingthere onhiswaytohispost.In recentyearshehasbeen livingwiththeDivineWord FathersatTeihny,111. CardinalTien,whoisalso ArchbishopofPeking,noted inaninterviewthathisFormosaassignmentishisfirst intheFarEastsincehewas forcedtoleavePekingin 1948. Atthattime,whilethe CardinalwasinHongKong recoveringfromaheartailmenttheChinesecommunistsoverranhisSee.He atternpedtoreturn,butwas preventedfromdoingsoby theRedregime. WhenhearrivesinFormosainthe'firstweekof March,CardinalTienwill beginanewphaseofhis ecclesiasticalcareer.One ofhisfirsttaskswillbe tocallameetingofthefour apostolicprefectsthereto decideuponfuturedetailsof thenewlyreorganisedCatholicFuJenUniversity.

BeyondthatsaysCardinalTien"therearetwomain taskstoperformwhichalso constituteinpartthemotiveformyassignmentto Taipei:tounifythemissionaryeffortonFormosawhich involvesmanyreligioussocietiesandmanynationalitiesandtopromotehigher education. TheCardinalexplained thattherearefourhigh schoolsandthenucleusofa universityonFormosanow. Hehopestoaddmorehigh schoolsandseetheuniversitythroughitsfulldevelopment.

FiringHopes

Askedtoindicatethesignificanceofhisassignment toFormosa,CardinalTien pointedouttwoimmediate facts.Hesaidthat"the Churchisprovingthegreat importanceitassignstothe missionsinthatarea,and thatitwillgivestrongmoralsupporttotheChinese Nationalistgovernmentin itsfightagainstthecommunists."

Isthereanyreasonwhy theCardinalwasnotsent totheFarEastearlier?

Onereasonhesaid,was thattheChurchfearedviolentrepercussionsagainst theclergyandhierarchyon theChinamainland. He indicatedthatnowthisconsiderationseemstomake littledifference.

CardinalTien principle,becausetheyare militantatheists;infact, becausetheyarenowengagedinanall-outeffort toseveralltieswithRome andcreateaschismatic nationalchurch.Underthese circumstancesnoimprovementofrelationsispossible, hesaid.

Askedifanyarrangementsuchasthatworked outinPolandmightbeemployedinChina,hesaid thereisnocomparisonbetweentheconditionsin PolandandChina.In PolandCatholicsareamajorityand,relativelyspeaking,arewellorganised.In China,Catholicsareaminorityand,evenatitsbest, theChuch'sorganisation therewasalwayshampered bygreatdistancesandother factors.

HowdoestheChurch's futurelookonFormosa?

TheCardinalsaidthatin 10years.theCatholicpopulationhasgrownfrom 12,000to200.000anditwill growstillmore.Catholic populationnowconstitutes twopercentofthe10millionpopulation.There arenowbetweenfourand fivehundredprieststoserve them.Withthedevelopment ofeducationandthereturn toFormosaofthescatteredChinesepriests-anotheroftheCardinal'sprojects-theChurchwill growevenmoreandfaster.

In1957,atotalof6.159priestswereordained throughouttheworld;thebreakdownoffiguresshowed 3,958ordainedinEurope,2,080inAmericaand93in thePhilippines. Thesefiguresdonotincludestatisticsforterritories underthejurisdictionoftheSacredCongregationsfor thePropagationoftheFaithandfortheOriental Church,nordotheyincludefiguresfromnationsunder communistdomination.

Onereason,hesaid,was added,thereisthebelief thattheCardinal'spresence willfirethehopesofthe ChineseCatholicssuffering onthemainland. Askedifheanticipated anycontactwiththemainland,theCardinalmadeno statement.Hispresenceon Formosawillprobablymake thecommunistsdoubly alertandCatholicsdoubly cautiousoveranyattempts atcontact. OnJanuary24anold Goldfieldsidentity,Mrs. MargaretCarroll,aged77 years.passedawayatSt. JohnofGodHospital,Kalgoorlie,afterashortillness.

ThelateMrs.Carroll,formerlyMissMargaretCurtin, cametotheGoldfieldsfrom Newcastle,NewSouth Wales,intheearly1900's.

In1913shemarriedthe lateLawrenceCarrollat Boulderandsettleddownin Kalgoorlie,whereshelived untilherdeath.Shewas pre-deceasedbyherhusbandin1945.

ThelateMrs.Carrollwas afoundationmemberofthe ChristianBrothers'College ParentsandFriendsAssociation,Kalgoorlie.Shewasa ferventmemberofthe SacredHeartSodality.

ThelateMrs.Carrollis survivedbytwosons,Jim (BedfordPark)andJack (Kalgoorlie),andadaughter,Nance(Mrs.Karczub, ofKalgoorlie),andseven grandchildren.

PressureFromRacialGroupings

Itisindeedacuriousthrowofthedicethatthe townshipofHunterinNewSouthWales,theelectorate ofthemanwhosmashedtheLaborParty,shouldalso bethebirthplaceofanothermovementoffissionand disruption-thistime,though,onthenationalrather thanthepartyscale.Iaminnopositiontojudge whethertheclaimofMr.JerzkyBielskiregardingthe unionsistrue.Hesaysthatmigrantsaredebarred fromunionofficeandsowillhavenovoiceinindustrial orpoliticalaffairsunlesstheybandtogether.Nowit isnotatallunlikelythatthereisquiteanamountof skulduggeryinunionsdominatedbyCommunists againstmigrantswho,havingsufferedunderRed regimes,knowCommunismforwhatitisasagainst whatitpretendstobe.

Wehaveseenthesickeningtacticstowhichthe Comradeswillresorttogainortomaintainindustrial power.Itrangesallthewayfromballot-riggingto attemptedmurder.ButMr.Bielski'sorganisationisnot thewaytomeetdiscriminationifitexistsinanypreponderatingdegree.Onhisownadmission,"every fourthunionistinAustraliaisaNewAustralian."Such aforcemustbeapowerfuloneusingnormaldemocratic procedures.Ofcourse,theexistenceofpressuregroups isnormalandevenindigenoustoourindustrialand politicalprocesses.WespeakofLeft,RightandCentre andacceptthesegroupingsaslegitimatepressurepoints. Butorganisationalongthelinesofracialdivisionsis nottobetolerated.Wehaveunhappyhistorical memoriesofthetvublestheycancause.

ItisclearthatCanberra.inliftingimportlicences,is hopingtoforcedownpricesthroughcompetition.If manufacturers,afteryearsofcoddling,feeltheyhave beenbadlydoneby,theyoughttoreflectthatthey have,manyofthem,notplayedthegameinthenational interest.Hadarationalcompetitionbeenmaintained domestically,externaleconomicpressureneednothave beeninvoked.Itistheunjustandoppressivetendency tocombineandtomonopoliseonthepartofmany industrialiststhathasforcedtheFederalGovernment toopenthetariffdoorsandprovidehealthycompetition. ItwasindeedamazingtohearMr.Menzies,whohas alwaysshownatendernesstowardsbigbusiness, remindhisaudiencethatfreeenterprisedidnotmean "protectedandmonopolyenterpriseshelteredfrom competition."Whatitdidmean,hesaid,wasfree competition,protectedagainstcheaplabourorunfair competition,butnotgiven"anexclusiveaccesstothe localmarketirrespectiveofstructureorefficiency." Themainburthenofhisaddresswasthatmanagement wouldhavetoadjustitsideas,tocarrynewburdens, tocheckrisesincosts,andtoreplacespeculationwith investment.ForJohnCitizen-andthatincluded employerandemployee-thenewregimemeantthat "wemustincreaseourproductivityperhead."

WhilethePrimeMinister'sproposalsreadvery sanely,itwillbeamootpointastowhatreactionthe raisingofthetariffwallwillprovoke.Itcouldgivea stimulustocombinesandmonopolies.Themenwho areintentortconcentratingeconomicpowerintheir handsirrespectiveofthepublicgoodmaywellfeelthat aunitedfrontwillbestmeetanexternalchallenge. WhatCanberrawillneedtowatchisthefusionoflocal monopolieswithoverseascartels.Itmaynotbetoo curlytoexamineAmericanlegislationagainstprecisely suchatrend,fornothingcouldsodecisivelydefeatthe Government'sintentionandletloosethedisastrous floodofinflation.

GutterPressIsNotConcerned WithMarriage,But"Romance"

HavinghoundedthePrincessMargaretwithoutcease ormoderationoveraperiodofyears,andhavingshown themselvesvindictivepagansoverherrenunciationof Townsend,theEnglish-speakingPressatlargehasbeen caughtonthehopwiththeannouncementofher engagement.The"CalgaryAlbertan"-aCanadian newspaper-commentedwaspishly:"NowthatPrincess Margaretistobemarried,thequestionis:"Whatwill sustainEnglishjournalisminthedrearyyearsahead?" MoralMaturityNotAgeIsThe TestInBeautyContests

RecentlytheMinisterforChildWelfareproposedto preventgirlsundertheageof16yearsfrompartici- patinginbathingbeautycompetitions.TheMinister wasnot,ofcourse,concernedwiththemoralityofthe matterbecausemoralshavenoplaceinthesecularist set-up.WhattheMinisterproposestodoistotake theplaceofthestupidparentswhohaven'tenough sensetopreventtheirdaughtersactinglikeprizecattle. Theyfeltnocompunction abouttheirfailings,even abouttheheartlessRobinHoodismoftheirkindof charity,whichstillconfined itselftopeoplelikethemselvesandwascoupledwith adeepdisplikeandcoqtemptforoutsiders.

IwascondemnedbyaSupremePeople'sCourtofthe People'sCroatianRepubliconOctober11,1946,to16 yearsofforcedlabour,firstintheprisonofLepoglava andthentomypresentinternmentinKrasic.That sentencewasjuridichomicideofaninnocentman,that wastheinterpretationgiventoitbythewholecivilised world.Thiswasadmittedevenbycertainleadersof theFederatedPeople'sRepublicofYugoslaviawhomet withProfessor(Ivan)MestrovicintheUnitedStates. Allthiswascommunicatedtobebywordofmouthby ProfessorMestrovicwhenhecametovisitmethisyear atKrasic.Heknowstheirnames.

Yes,Igotochurchifpossible(butoftenIcannot) tofulfilmydutyatleastinthismanner,andtoaddress thepeoplewithwordsofteachingandencouragement, andtohelptheparishpriestofKrasic.Nopriestcan comefromtnenearbytownstohelphim,aspreviously wasthecustomformanyyears.

IftheorgansofthegovernmentconsiderthatIam dyingtooslowly,thenletthemordermyphysical liquidation,astheyorderedmyjuridicliquidation14 yearsago. TheLadiesofBethany werefoundedin1919by JesuitFatherJacquesvan GinnekenintheNetherlands.FathervanGinneken hadseenhowCatholicand non-Catholicsoldiershad cometogetherduringVI;orIcl WarIandhadfoundunion inallthingsexceptan understandingofeach other'sreligiousbeliefs:In determiningthataparticulareffortshouldbemadeto creatingthisunderstanding, hedecidedthatwoman'sinstinctivegentlenessand patiencewouldbethebest means.Sohegatheredtogetheragroupofyoung womenwholivedincommon,woreciviliandress, anddedicatedtheirlivesto thispurpose.

Atfirsttheyweresimple laywomen.Latertheyadded agroupofcontemplatives, womenReligious,whose taskitwastosupportby prayerandsacrificetheapostolicworkoftheirlaycoworkers.

In1932,theLadiesof BethanypetitionedRometo berecognisedastrueReligiousandalsoaskedtobe dispensedforthewearingof areligioushabit.Therule wasapprovedandthedispensationgranted.

TheLadiesofBethanybecamethen,astheyarenow, nunsinciviliandress.They takethevowsofpoverty, chastityandobediencewith onesignificantaddition. Theyvowalso''toconsume ourselvesintheserviceof non-Catholics."

Whereasothersareengagedinwhattheymaycall theintellectualapostolate tonon-Catholics,theLadies ofBethanydescribetheir workas"aserviceapostolate."Fromtheirmother houseinBloemendaal,the Netherlands,theyhavegone outto14foundationsin theirnativeland,toAustria andtoRome.Todaythey number120members.

Theirworkisdonechiefly throughthesocialandrecreationcentrestheyoperate. Non-Catholics,whomaybe curiousaboutCatholicism butfinditdifficulttoapproachapriestdirectly,are welcomedtothesecentres bythegraciousLadies,who arehighlyeducatedand cultured.OneoftheLadies -perhapsoveracupoftea -willtalktothem,answer theirquestionsandhelp themsatisfytheircuriosity.

TheFoyerUnitasinRome isonesuchcentre.Itadds oneunusualelementinthat theLadies,forthemost part,takenon-Catholicson sight-seeingtoursofRome. Drawingupontheirvast

knowledgeofphilosophy, theology,liturgy,apologetics,historyandarcheology,theybecome"the Catholiceyes"oftheirnonCatholicguests,showing themthemeaningofthe ruins,Christianmonuments andchurcheswhichthey otherwisewouldnotsee.

Thisistheirchiefwork. Theyperform,however, manyoilierservices.They giveadviceonhotels,shoppingtips,whichbustotake toaparticulardestination, oranyofthehundredquestionsthatatouristmight ask.ItisprimarilyfornonCatholics-andfreeof charge.

royerUnitasisstaffedby fouroftheLadies.Though theyaretruenuns,theycall themselves"Miss"instead of"Sister."Theywearciviliansdress,sometimesa touchofcostumejewellery, conservativebutpleasant hair-do,nomake-up.Normally,theyusetheirDutch bicyclesfortransportation, becausetheyareaccustomed tothemandbecausethey arceconomical.

NotInDisguise

Sincetheirservicesare free,theyrelyfornecessary fundssolelyontheofferings ofindividualswhoknowthe importanceoftheirlabours. ApriestinRomewhois engagedintheecumenical movementpaystheirrent andutilities.Sometimesthe touristswhomtheyserve leavesomethingforthem, butnothingiseverasked.

TheLadiesofBethany havebeendescribedas "nunsindisguise."Nothing couldbefartherfromthe truth.Theymakenosecret thattheyarenuns,andthey freelydiscussthefactwith anyone.Theiruseofcivilianclothesissolelyforthe purposeofputtingnonCatholicsatease.

TheLadiesliveintwo worlds;theworldthatthey meetbyday,andtheirown "community,"amodest apartmentwheretheyshare mealsandrecitevespersin commonintheevening.No otherreligiousexercisesare doneincommon.Theysay theirmorningprayers,meditatefor45minutes,attend MassandreceiveCommunion,anddotheirspiritual readinginprivatesometime duringtheday.Onceayear theyreturntotheirmother housefor40daysofspiritualrenewal.

Theirtrainingisthorough. Afterhighschoolthereisa six-monthpostulancy,followedbyatwo-yearnovitiate.Thentherearethree yearsofstudyandthree yearsofapostolate-and onlythenaretheysentout onassignment,Theirtrainingisprimarilyinthe

sacredsciences,secondarily inlanguagesandthefine arts.Thereisanemphasis onthestudyofcomparative religion. Theironlyidentification asLadiesofBethanyisa smallgoldcrosssuspended aroundtheneck.Thosewho wereoncecontemplativesin thesocietywearasimple goldenring.

In1959theLadiesof Bethanyserved779nonCatholics,695Protestants, sixOrthodox,nineJews, twoMoslems,oneHinduand 66ofunknowndenomination.Thesevisitorscame fromfivedifferentcontinentsandbelongedto33 differentnationalities.The languagedifferencescreated noproblemfortheLadies. TheyspeakDutch,German French,EnglishandItalian., TheLadiesseldomseethe fruitsofthelabours.Occasionally,though,theywill receivealettersuchasone recentlythat,said:

"Youwillbepleasedto hearthatonsuchandsuch adateIwasreceivedinto theCatholicChurch.The roadwaslong,andthefirst steps(orthelast!)were madeinRome ."

Theyarenaturallyhappy withconversions,butthey considertheirpurposefulfillediftheirguestsbeginto understandtheChurcha littlebetter.

VaticanCity.-Acommissionforthe finalrevisionofthe15-year-oldLatin translationofthePsalmshasbeenerectedunderthepresidencyofHisEminence AugustinCardinalBea,S.J.

Thecommission'staskistoreviewtheLatin formandtoadaptittomodernusage.Thiswillbe doneinthelightofastudymadeofthenewversion ofthePsalmsbyLatinscholarssinceitspublication ontheFeastofChristtheKing,1944.

ThenewversionofthePsalms,whichevery priesthastheoptionofusinginhisbreviary,was translatedfromacriticallyreconstructedtextof theoriginalHebrewbyacommissionofprofessors ofRome'sPontificalBiblicalInstitute.

Althoughnotyetspelledoutindetail,theprovisions ofalawmakingBuddhismtheofficialreligionarenot expectedtokeepanon-Buddhistfromholdingpublic office,includingthepresidency.

Burma,aSouth-EastAsiannationwithapopulation ofabout20million,becameindependentin1948after centuriesofdominationbyGreatBritain.About90per centoftheBurmeseareBuddhists.Thereare177,425 Catholicsinthecountry.

ThecountrywasruledbytheAnti-FascistLeaguewhichbeganasaresistancemovementduringthewar -untilOctober.1958.Atthattimeapartysplitledto theresignationofPremierUNuandtheassumptionof controlbythearmyunderGeneralNeWin.Mr.UNu becameheadoftheso-called"Clean"factionofthe leaguewhichdefeatedthe"Stable"factionheadedby formerPremierBaSweintheelectionsthismonth.

ArmyEnlightenmentSuccess

Sinceashorttimeafterwinningindependencethis countryhasbeenplaguedbyacommunistrebellion whichhasresultedinalmostconstantguerrillafighting. Throughoutitsyearandahalfinpowerthearmy carriedonanunrelentingcampaignagainstRedinsurgentsinthefield.Italsostrovetoenlightenthe BurmesemassestothedangerstoBuddhismfrom communism.DuringthattimethenumberofRed insurgentswasreducedfrom30,000to5,000.

Thesuccessofthearmyregime'senlightenment campaignisevidentfromthebadbeatingtakeninthe electionbythepro-communistNationalUnitedFront. Inpossessionof46seatsinthelastParliament,latest electionreturnsshowedthatitwillnowhaveonlythree inthenewlegislature.

Anotherindicationofthedeclineofcommunist prestigehereisthelukewarmreceptiongiventoSoviet PremierNikitaKhrushchevduringhispost-election visit,comparedwiththeenthusiasticwelcomeaccorded himin1955.

SomeobserversbelievethatUNu'svictoryoverthe favoured"Stable"faction-whichhadsoughtto identifyitselfasfriendlytothecountry'smilitary rulers-isduetothearmy'senlightenmentefforts.It issaidthatthearmy'swarningagainsttheReddanger toBuddhismcreatedareligiousfervourinthecountry andmadevotersfavourabletoMr.UNu'spromiseto makeBuddhismtheStatereligion.

Ithasalsobeenpointedoutthathostilitytomilitary ruleworkedagainstthefactionthatidentifieditself withthearmy.Despitethegoodworkdonebythe army,manypersonsreportedlysufferedfromtheharsh measurestakenbysomeofficersandshowedtheirdispleasurebyvotingforMr.UNu.

TheChurchinBurmaisshowingsignsofconsiderable progressafterthedevastationofWorldWarIIandthe unrestcausedbyguerrillawarfareagainsttheRedsand governmentrestrictionsagainsttheentryofmissionaries.

LeaderoftheChurchinBurmaaretheheadsofits twoArchdioceses,RangoonandMandalay.Thenewly appointedheadofthelatterSee,ArchbishopJosephU Win,isthefirstnativeBurmesetoholdthetitleof Archbishop.
