Theprimarypurposeof marriage,Mgr.Sullivan remindedanattentiveaudience,wastheprocreationof marriage;thesecondary purpose,mutualloveand consolation.Heemphasised, however,thatthesecondary endofmarriagewasbound upwiththeprimaryend.
"Thewholeofmarriage shouldbetheexpressionof thismutuallove,"hesaid.
"GodhasannexedtoHis planfortheprocreationof newlifetheattractionof thesexes,andthemost completeexpressionofmutualhumanlove."

Particularlyonthemale side,itwastypicallyAustraliantoneglectthesmallercourtesiesandindicationsofaffectionandrespect towardstheoppositesex. Itwasfalsetoassumethat agreatdealofknowledge wasnecessarytoachieve happyrelationsbetween husbandandwife.Anaturaldisplayofaffectionand trueloveforoneanother wasfarbetterthananything workedoutstudiouslyand systematically. thoughtthatCatholicswere badyoffbecausetheywere governedbystrictlaws.

CommencingwithEgypt,hehasmadeNasserahuge loanforthebuildingoftheAswanDam,anaction whichwasdesignednotonlytoplacatetheMoslem worldatlargebuttocoveruptheCommunisttake-over inIraqwithitsthreattothewholeoftheMiddleEast.
Mikoyan,meanwhile,hasbeenplayingtheroleofthe successfulrevolutionaryinCubawhereFidelCastro seemsonlytoowillingtobeflatteredandfooled.Cuba istoreceivealoaninexcessof£50millionsinaddition toashotinthearmforthesugarindustrytothetune ofmorethan£2,000.000.ThatisaverydirectchallengetotheUnitedStateswhichhasbeenstandingon aplatformofpatienceinCuba'sregard.

ItisindeedatragicpositioninwhichNehrufinds himself-havingtochoosebetweentheSovietbearand theChinesetiger-andhimselfsuchalambofaman! Khrushchev'sbidisofsuchproportionsastolullIndian fearsandtopersuadethemthattheSovietcanandwill putthehardbitonChina.£180millionsistobeloaned totheIndiansat2ipercentforobjectivesseemingly peaceful,butwhichcontainthesinewsofwar-steel, oil,powerstations,etc.WhateverwayNehruturns "bondage"iswrittenonthesignposts.Allofwhichis awarningagainstthefalsemysticismwhichiscalled quietism.
Whatwillbeconvenientlyforgottenintheneedof survivalisthattheAmericanshavegiveninmore generousmeasuretoIndia.Theiraidexceedsthe£2,000 millionmarkandhasbeenacceleratedoflate,butitis beingspentonlessspectacularobjectivesthanthe Soviet'sandevokeslessgratitude.Itmaybethat Eisenhower'svisitwillrecallwhatthetwonationshave incommonandenableNehrutofindsomemorecomfortablepointofsurvivalbetweenthefryingpanand thefire.
ButthemostformidablebidbytheSoviet,sofaras thiscountryisconcerned,isthatinIndonesia.Here
Mr.KirwanWard,towhomweareallindebtedfor hisgenialpen,notseldomproducespiecesofphilosophy whichtheAmericanswouldcall"folksy"andwhichare nonethelesspenetratingforbeingbreezilyexpressed. Recently,discussingcriticismsoflocaltelevision,he voicedtheopinionthattherewaslesswrongwiththe programmesthanwithpublictaste."Horseoperasand cornymelodramastopeveryviewers'poll,"hetellsus, "sothestudiosandthestationsnaturallygivethemto us.Itissimplyaquestionofsupplyanddemand."He addsthatinAmericathefourfavouriteprogrammes arecowboysessions.Mr.Wardregretsthistendency andfeelsthat"rightnowthere'saworld-wideshortage ofmentaladults."
Idon'tknowthatIcouldgothewholewaywithMr. WardexcepttothepointwhereIagreeyoucanhave toomuchofevenagoodthing.Cowboyfilms,ifthey arenotasymptomofartisticprofundity,areasymptom ofmoralwholesomeness.Theissuesofrightandwrong arenotfuzzedupwithalotofphoney"problems"and smartpatter.Ifanumberofgood,innocentcitizens getshotupinthehorseoperas,thebaddiesinvariably payintheend.Thesharpdistinctionbetweengoodand evilisasfreshastheairthatblowsovertheprairies. Andthemodernworldissadlyinneedofachangeof moralclimatefromthatwhichlingersintheboudoirs ofthedecadenttheatre.
Whatissopleasingaboutallthisisthatthehorse operaistheresultofpopulardemand.Thatitisso givesthelietothefilmmogulsandPressbaronsthat theendlessstreamofsex-riddenmotifstheybeeninflictinguponthepublicforyearswereinresponseto publictaste.Thefactisthatthepublichaveneverbeen consultedaboutwhattheylike.Thedebasedmenwho churnoutthefilthhavesimplytakenthelowest commondenominatorofhumannatureandpandered toit.Nowthatthepublicarebeingconsulteditisvery amusingindeedtofindthattheyaresicktodeathof sexandwantfreshair-completewithcowboysand Indians.Sincethesamepeoplecontroltelevisionas controldailynewspapers(inthisStateanyway),we willbelookingatthepapersforreactiontopublic opinion.

Onthesubjectofpoliticalprelates,theissueis relativelysimple.TheCatholicChurchistheavowed enemyofCommunismbothbecauseitisthemost monstrousheresyandbecauseitdenieseveryhuman rightanddecency.PapaldecreesforbidCatholicsto assistCommunismeitherdirectlyorindirectly.The AustralianBishopswerewellwithintheprovinceof theirproperjurisdictionincallinguponCatholicsto resisttheinroadsofCommunismwithintheranksof theLabormovement.(Actuallytheinvitationcame fromLaborpoliticiansandtradeunionleaders.)For neithertheCatholicbishopnorlaymanisdisenfranchisedbyreasonofhisreligiousconvictions.Ifthisis politicalprelacyithasexcellentantecedents.
OnerecallsnotonlythewordsofPopePiusXII protestingagainstthosewhowoulddrivetheChurch backtothepresbytery,buttohisdecisiveactswhich savedbothItalyandFrancefromfallingintothe controlofCommunistsshortlyafterAhewar.One recallswithgratitudetheoppositionofthelateCardinal StepinactotheTitoistterror,ofCardinalMindszentyto theRedtotalitariansofHungary,ofCardinalFaulhaber totheNazis,ofPopePiusXItotheFascists.Thiswas politicalprelacywhichaloneavailedtokeepalivethe soulsofnationstakencaptive.TheChurchfoughton afterthelastvestigesoflegitimatepoliticalopposition hadperished.

Whereasthereisnosacramentalactivityinthestrict sense,suchasofferingthesacrificeoftheMassand thegivingofgracethroughSacraments,theirroleis notapassiveone.
Theirroleistoinfluencetheirfellowhumanbeings toseethetruthofChrist'steachingundertheguidance ofthehierarchicalinstitutioncreatedbyChristforthe guiding,rulingandteachingofallmenontheroadto salvation.
InAustralia,inearlytimes,thepriestwasnotonly theteacherofthespirituallife,hewasalsoinmany instancestheguideinlocalconditions.Today,however, thecomplexityofmodernlife,thegreatnumbersof people,thetypesofwork,andthescarcityofpriests havefocusedtheattentionofallontheimportantrole thathastobeplayedbytheinstructedlaityinthe formationofaChristianwayoflife,political,domestic. socialandeconomic.
Thelaityaremoreintouchwiththeirfellow-men simplybecausetherearemoreofthemandtheyare morewiththeirfellows.
