ThefirstCanaConferencefor1960will begininApplecrossparishnextTuesday night,January26.Marriedcouplesfrom nearbyparisheshavebeeninvitedtoattend.

Thisnewswasannouncedcussedwithreferencetothe lastSundaybyRev.A. Lynch.P.P.,ofApplecross.Nearbyparishpriestsalso recommendedtheconferenceto Attendancetheirparishioners. isexpectedto beevenhigherthanatOsbornePark,whereover50 coupleswenttotheconferenceconductedtherelast November.

ACanaConferenceisa seriesoflecturesformarriedcouples,particularly young withcouplesandcouples children.Thespeakersincludebothpriestsandlay people.

ComtncntingontheApplecrossconference,Rev.J. O'Brien,chaplaintothe SocialMovement,saidthis weekthatPerthCatholics wereveryfortunateinhavingexpertsavailablewho wherequalifiedtohandle familyproblemsandatthe sametimewellinstructedin theteachingoftheChurch. Dr.G.Sparrow,ofPrincess MargaretHospital,hadbeen mosthelpfulatthelast ference-hisplacewouldbe tilledattheApplecrossconferencebyDr,Ryan,who wasalsohighlyqualifiedto speakondifficultieswith children.

FatherO'Briensaidthat theCanaConferenceatOsborneParkhadtouchedon thesubjectofbirthcontrol, whichisbeingcurrentlydis-

Mrs.Goldingwasinher 90thyear,beingbornat NibiNibi,nearNewNorcia, in1870,thedaughterof WilliainHenryandMary McKnoe.Attheageof sevenhermotherdiedand shewasbroughtdownto St.Joseph's,Victoria-sq. Themodeoftransportwas asandalwooddrayandthe driverwasHisLordship, BishopSalvado,forwhom, accordingtoherdaughter, Mrs.Cooke,Mrs.Golding hadthegreatestregardand admirationforhiswork.

RemainingatSt.Joseph's tillshewas14,MissMcKnoe wenttoworkforJ.C.H. Jamestillshewasmarried in1890toWilliamGolding, adairymanfromWest Perth. Thereweresixchildren ofthemarriageandthe familyhomewasinWest Perthuptillaboutnine yearsago.

Strangelyenough,whenyougetademographeron hispropersubjectyoualmostalwaysgetapositive approachandtheassurancethattheworld'sfood potentialisnotinanydangerofbeingoutstrippedby populationincreases.Itisalsonoteworthythatyou don'tfindthiscraven,throw-in-the-towelattitudein the bloc.Inhisrecentaddresstothe SupremeSoviet,Khrushchevnotedwithapprovalthat improvedlivingstandardsinRussiahadledtoa higherbirth-rate.Hecertainlywasnotworriedthat thepopulationincreaseoftheU.S.S.R.hadreached 3,680.000peopleduring1959.Neitherdoesonehear whiningfromRedChinaoveritspopulationof600 millions.TheonlycountrieswhichhavebeencomplainingareJapan(whichcertainlylacksliving spaceandwhereoneandahalfmillionabortions occureachyear)andIndia,whereofficiallysponsored birth-preventionhasbeenaconspicuousfailure.

PERTH'SMISSIONARYACHIEVEMENT

Atatimewhenquitealotofletterpressisbeing givenovertoprotestingagainstinhumanutterancesby mensupposedlyeducatedenoughnottomakethem, andwiththethoughtsofeveryoneconcentratedon thesethings,wecanquiteeasilypassoveranachievement.ThepeopleofthisArchdiocesehavecertainly achievedsomethingthatiswellworthnotingandloudly praising-lastyear£17,125wascontributedtothe Missions.

This,intimesofhighpricesonalmosteverycommodityfromabsoluteessentialsthroughtowhatare classedasnecessaryluxuries,issomethingthatcould havebeenbroughtaboutonlybyaspiritofsacrifice.

TheMissioncollectionsaremadeinparishesand schools,butirrespectiveofwherethemoneyisactually collected,itcomesfromtheonesource,thefamily.In thecaseofsingleyoungmenandwomen,fromtheir weeklywagepacket,whichoftenhastostretchquitea wayinsomecases.Even,asthelistshows,theold peopleatGlendaloughgaveoftheirpensionsaswould manyonthepensionintheirparisheshavedone.

Itistrulyanadmirablethingtoseesogenerousa responsetotheeloquentappealmadebytheDirector ofMissionsfortheArchdiocese.

Mostparisheshaveheavycommitmentsofinterest andcapitalreduction,andthereforethismoneycannot betouchedforextraappeals.Innearlyeverycasethe Missionappealhasbeensomethingadditionaltothe normalweeklysupportoftheChurch.Whenthechildrenattheschoolsalsocontribute,whetheritbeby personalsacrificeoftheirpocketmoney,orfundsraised bysellingthings,orevenifitisastraight-outrequestto mumordadfor"somethingfortheMissions,"an admirable"mission-mindedness"hasbeenshown.

Thisexerciseofcharitycanhavefar-reachingeffects, becauseitwillenablethePontificalSocietyforthe PropagationoftheFaithtoexpanditsactivitiesin bringingtheknowledgeoftheTrueFaithtopeoplein othercountries;particularlyourAsianbrothersin Christtowhomwehaveaseriousresponsibility.Itwill alsocombattherisingtideofCommunisminthose countries,becauseitwillgivetothepeopleatruly Christianphilosophyoflife.Withthistheythemselves wouldthenseethefallaciesofothersystemsand philosophies.

Sincesacrificeisoflittleavailonitsown,itishoped, andindeedthepresumptionis,thatthesecondrequest madeduringtheMissionappealwascarriedoutwith equalsuccess.Thatwastheappealforprayersforthe Missions.TheworkersontheMission,priests,religious, catechists,labourers,everyonewhoinanywayisdoing hisorherbittotaketheGospeltoeverycreatureinthe wholeworld,hasarighttotheseprayersofours.They realisethatnothinginthisworld,barringevil,canbe achievedwithoutprayer.

Ithasbeengoodtoseesucharesponsear-iriraugers abrightprospectforthefuturethatourCatholicpeople can,inthemidstofdifficulttimes,rememberthepart theycanplayinspreadingtheGospelofChrist,by prayerandfinancialassistance.

PhonesAreTapped,PoliceFollowVisitors

Oneofthemostdepressingaspectsofa visittotheSovietUnionistheRedregime's emphasisoninternalsecurity.Noone,not evenacasualvisitor,conescapethe"Big Brother"surveillancewhichpervadesthe Sovietcapital.

BeforeIvisitedMoscow,Ihadassumedthatthe effectsofapolicestatewereexaggeratedbymany reportersandwriters.However,personalexperiences haveconfirmedtheofficialsuspicionandmistrustof allforeignersthatexistintheSovietUniontoday.

MuchhasbeensaidbySovietleadersaboutthe "SpiritofCampDavid."Evenmorehasbeenwritten andsaidabouttheSovietUnion'sdesiretoease tensions.Gift-bearingRedleadershavetouredmany partsoftheworldaccompaniedby"dovesofpeace." However,thereisnosignofpeaceortranquillityin thesecurityarrangementsoftheSovietUnion.

Oneexamplewillsufficetojustifytheseremarks. Youwouldexpectittocomeoutofafictionalspy thriller.Yet,itactuallyhappenedinMoscowatatime whenPremierNikitaKhrushchevwasgliblyaskingthe WestnottofearthedeedsoftheRussianBear.

OnThanksgivingDayIattendedaspecialMassat thehomeofU.S.AmbassadorLlewellynThOmpson.I wasscheduledtohavedinnerlaterwiththefamilyof oneoftheAmericanembassyofficials.Aroundmidday weleftbycarforhishome.

Wehadnosoonerroundedthecornerwherethe AmericanEmbassyiswhenaRussiancarwithtwo policemeninitdrewupatarespectabledistancebe- hind,andfollowedusallthewaytotheofficial's apartment.Iwasinformedthatthishadbeengoing oneversincetheofficialarrivedinMoscow.

Therewereacoupleofhoursbeforedinner,andwe decidedtotakeawalkonamainboulevardnearthe apartmenthouse.Theofficialbroughthischildrenalong forthewalk,aswellasFatherLouisDion,A.A.,of Worcester,Massachusetts,AmericanCatholicchaplain inMoscow.Wewalkedforlessthanamile-itwasten belowzero-yetoneoftheRussianpolicemenfollowed us.

Mrs.Feelyalsoassisted LorettaYoungwhenthe starwenttoLourdeslast springtomakeaTVfilm, "TheRoad."

AuxiliaryBishopFulton J.SheenofNewYorkwas aLourdesvisitorlastsummer.Whilethere,hemet oneofMrs.Feely'sco-workersatthemedicalbureau, aformerFrenchcommunist fromNice.Sufferingfrom anaccident-causedparalysis,themanhadgoneto theshrinescornfulof Lourdes'renownforcures. Frankly,itsoundedabitoverdoneandIwas sceptical.However,thepriestturnedouttobemore thanright.IntheeveningIvisitedanotherAmerican official'shomeandhecarriedoutthesameprocedure beforeconversing.Healsosaidtheyhadirrefutable evidenceofSovietwire-tapping,evenintheembassy. It'snothardfortheRussianstodothis,especiallyin diplomats'apartmenthouses.Afterall,theyaremain- tainedbySovietcitizensunderthedirectionofa governmentagency.Repairscannotbemadeunless governmentpermitsareobtained.Itappearsthatno Westernembassy'spersonnelarefreefromthepossi- bilityofwire-tappingintheirhomes.Thesamegoes fornewsmenandbusinessofficials.Therehavebeen cases,too,whereforeigntourists'andbusinessmen's hotelroomshavebeentapped.

Therecanbenogenuinemutualunderstandingand trustuntilWesternersareallowedtomixfreelywith theRussianpeople.

SkiesoverAsiawerecloudedbutcalmas the1960'sdawned.Theredcloudofcommunismwasthemosttreotening,asithadbeen whenthepreviousdecadeopened.

Inspiteofthatthreat,theChurchgressinlargeareas ofAsiaduringthepasttenyears.Itgainedinstature andfruitfulnessbygainingmembers,locallyborn bishops,priestsandreligious,foreignmissionariesand prestige.

InKorea,inspiteofabitterwarfrom1950to1953, theChurchhadgrownmarvellouslysinceJanuary, 1950.AmongthefreeChineseinTaiwan(Formosa) andHongKong,Catholicgrowthhasbeenextraordinary.InJapanithasbeenmuchslowerbutstill greaterthaninanypreviousdecadeinmodernhistory. ElsewhereinthefreecountriesofAsia,theChurch hasgrownatvariousrates.

Ingeneral,allthefreegovernmentsinEastAsia showrespectforChristianity;inafewcountries,the Churchishamperedbyrestrictionsontheentryof foreignpriests,BrothersandSisters.Christiancitizens arerecognisedasanimportantpartofthepopulation. AmongtheAsiansofhighrankandprestigeinthe annalsofthe1950'sarethelatePresidentRamonMagsaysayofthePhilippines,PresidentNgoDinhDiemof freeVietnam,Vice-PresidentJohnM.Changoffree Korea,andChiefJusticeKotaroTanakaofJapan,all Catholics.

In1953thesecondEastAsianwasnamedtothe SacredCollegeofCardinals,HisEminenceValerian CardinalGracias,ArchbishopofBombay.In1958for thefirsttimeaChineseandanIndiancardinalvoted intheconclavethatelectedaPope.

NorthVietnamalonewasaddedtothecommunists' empireduringthedecade.Withonly35percentofthe totalvote,theygainedcontroloftheStateofKerala, inIndia.

Politically,theygainedandlost.InJanuary,1950, BritainshooktheFarEastbyrecognisingthePeking regime.TheU.S.wasthinkingoffollowingsuit,but theKoreanwar,beginningonJune25,1950,changed Americanthinkingenormously.TheChinesecommunists'highpointwasprobablytheBandungConference of1955,whentheyingratiatedthemselveswithmost oftheAsianandAfricanStates.

BlowsToRedPrestige

Communistprestigesufferedsomeheavyblows duringthe1950'sTheUnitedNationsfoughttorepel communistaggressioninKorea.OfthenorthKorean communistsoldierstakenasprisonersofwar.35per centrefusedviolentlytoreturntotheircommunistruledhomes.OftheChinesecommunistsoldiers,72per centrefusedtogobacktoChina.Some800,000VietnamesefledfromnorthVietnamratherthanliveunder thevictoriouscommunists.

TheJapanesecommunistsblunderedrepeatedlyand lostfavourandseatsintheDiet.

BytheirbehaviourinTibetandonIndia'sfrontlet, theChinesecommunistsalienatedsynlpathiesinIndia andelsewhere.CommunistmisgovernmentofKerala evokedpopularprotestandsuspensionoftheregimeby thecentralgovernmentofIndia.

DuringthedecadenowbeguntheaimsofthecommunistsinAsiawillbewhattheyhavealwaysbeentodominateeverycountry.Everydictatorshipseeksto controlthecountriesonitsborders,forastart.The Chinesecommunistswillpursuethisaim,byforceand guile.Thereisnosign,however,thattheywillresort tolarge-scalearmedaggressionintheimmediate future.

ThepresenttrendofthecommunistsinAsiaseemsto betowardsinfiltrationandsubversion.

Enteringthenewdecade,theChurchinAsiaisfaced byonegreatenemy,whichisalsotheenemyofall humanlibertieseverywhere.andbymanylesserbut sizeableobstacles.Onhersideshehasadditional strengthgainedinthe1950's.Onefactorthatseems likelytogrowistheAsianlayapostolate,towhichthe firstmissionencyclicalofHisHolinessPopeJohnXXIII isboundtogivepowerfulimpetus.

DespicableformsOfMassHate

VaticanCity.-Recentoutbreaksofanti-Semitism havebeendescribedinaVaticanRadiobroadcastas "oneofthemostdespicableformsofmasshatred.'

Christians,thebroadcastsaid,arethefirsttodeplore theoutbreaks. TheVaticanRadiospeakerrecalledthewordsof PopePiusXIIwhenhereceivedagroupofJewish refugeesinaudiencein1945.PiusXIIatthattime decried"thedepthsofdiscord,hatredandfollyof persecutionwhich,becauseoftheinfluenceofintolerant anderroneousdoctrines,contrarytoeverynoblehuman andtrulyChristianspirit,havebeencreatedbetween nationsandracesandwhichhaveconsumedcountless innocentvictims."

HearrivedatSydneyon Thefirstpublicscreeningralliesheldinthatdiocese.

Tuesday,January5,where heistoarrangeforthe screeningthroughoutAustraliaofthe16mm.colour filmsdepictingtheFifteen MysteriesoftheRosary.

Thesefilmswereassessed amongthethreetopattractionsattheBrusselsWorld Fairin1958.

Givinganinterviewtoa representativeof"TheAdvocate,"FatherPeytonsaid hisfirstdutywastothank theCatholicsofAustralia andNewZealand-hierarchy,clergy,religiousand laypeople-forhavingcontributedmostgenerouslyfor themakingoftheRosary films.

Theinspirationtomake thesefilmscametohimat ClevelandOhio,U.S.A.,in June,1953-twomonthsbeforehecametoMelbourne toorganisethememorable FamilyRosaryCrusade which250,000peopleattendedintheBotanicGardens.

"Myheartwasonfireto getthesefilmssothatMohamniedan,Hindu,Protestant,JewandCatholicwouldcometoanappreciationoftheIncarnation,Redemption,andthesupernaturallife,"FatherPeyton said."Ihadtogethelpthe worldover,andAustralia wasthefirstcountrythat helpedme."

Australianscontributed theequivalentof125,000 dollars.

InNewZealand,His LordshipBishopKavanagh, ofDunedin,releasedFather F.Bennett,whoworkedfor 20monthsonScriptualresearchpreparatorytothe makingofthefilms.

InHollywood,20writers wereengagedfortwoyears preparingthescript.The actualshootingofthefilms tookplaceinSpain,with Spanishactors,andthetask occupiedsevenmonths.

FatherPeytonsaidthat thegirlwhoportrayedOur LadyintheJoyfulMysteries waschosenfrom500.She wasalittledressmakerfrom thesouthofSpain"and Murillo'sgreatestpainting wasinferiortoher."

FatherPeytonsaidaset ofthefilmswassenttothe latePopePiusXII,whowas deeplymovedwhenhe viewedthem.

HisHolinesswroteto FatherPeytononGoodFriday,1958.FatherPeyton quotedfromthatletter: "Whatagraceforthosewho seethesefilms-Ihopetheir numberwillbelegion.Who willseethesefilmswithout weepingforhissins?These filmshaveanapostolic characterfarandbeyond theirtechnicalperfection."

ofthesefilmswasatthe HolyFather'sPavilionat theBrusselsWorldFair, andtheywereviewedby 250,000people.TheKingof theBelgianstookasetto screenathispalace,and CeneralFrancotookaset toscreenforhisfamily.

InMadridduringHoly Weeklastyearthefilms wereshowninsixtheatres toaudiencestotalling 100,000.

"Becauseofmydebtto AustraliaIhavecomefrom Manilatoreportthis,"said FatherPeyton.Hehoped thatasaresultofhisvisit toSydneythisweekthe filmswouldbedistributed throughoutAustraliafo screening,beginningin Lent.

AtManilathescreening openedattwocinemassimultaneously.Thescreenings beganat8o'clockinthe morningofDecember2,and forthatsessionalone28 busesconveyed1,500college girls.

FatherPeytonexplained thatthefilmswerebeing usedwithmobileequipment, whichenabledtheirscreeninginthehinterlandandthe slums,especiallyinSouth Americancountjes.

Inpreparationforaseason inChile,onehundredteams offourpersonswereengagedinthecrusade.These teamscompriseduniversitystudentsandmembersof CatholicActionorganisations. Thecrusadewasbeing helpedbythedistributionof 500,000rosaries(nylonand plastic),thegiftofthe peopleofIreland.Theprincipalmemberofeachteam wasthecatechist,who taughtthepeopletosaythe Rosaryanddistributedthe rosaries.

FatherPeytonsaidthe screeningoftheRosary filmstooksevenandahalf hours.Becauseofthatlength oftimeitwasmoreconvenienttoscreenthefilms insectionstocorrespond withtheliturgicalcycle,an instancebeingthescreening oftheSorrowfulMysteries duringLent.

"Mysecondreasonfor makingthisvisittoAustraliaistoreachasmany peopleasIcantoraiseup arevivaloftheFamily RosaryPledgethepeople madeherefiveorsixyears ago,"FatherPeytonsaid, Hewillbeleavingnext SaturdayforChiletosupervisethecrusadethere.

WhentheVaticanannouncedonDecember19that HisEminenceThomasCardinalTien,S.V.D.,hadbeen appointedApostolicAdministratoroftheTaipeiarchdiocese,itwasalsoannouncedthatthearchdiocese, formerlyconfidedtotheCongregationoftheDisciples atheLord,wouldnowbeconductedbythesecular clergy.CardinalTien,whoremainsthelegitimate ArchbishopofPeking,hasbeenlivinginexileinthe UnitedStates.

ThelargestnumberlistedresidedinEurope,145 altogether,ofwhomsome50werepursuinghigher studiesinRome,theCatholicUniversityofLouvain, Belgium,orelsewhere.

MostoftheChinesepriestsnowinEuropeorAmerica werestudyingfortheprieshoodorengagedinhigher studiesabroadatthetimeofthecommunisttakeover ontheChinesemainland.Unabletoreturntotheir dioceses,theytooktemporaryworkinparishesorcontinuedtheirstudies.

However,missionarieshereassertthatthepossibilitiesforapostolicworkinFormosaareimmense. Therearemorethan500priestshere,butCatholics numberonly160,000inapopulationofmorethanten millionpeople.Therearestillvillageswithoutapriest, church,orCatholics.
