Theyarerushingabout,talkingoftheSummitConferenceasifitwereonlyamatteroffixingthefew lastdetailsofasuddenandabidingpeace.Thisisa monstrousanddangerousdelusion.

UnemploymentCannotBeTaken

Unemploymentisoccasionallyadvertedtobythe politicianseitherasastatisticintheSocialServices surveyorasawhippingboyforallegationsofgover- mentalinefficiency.Sofarasthegeneralpublicis concernedtheycontributetoSocialServicesandare contenttobelievethatwilltakecareoftheunemployed.Itissurelystrikingthatlessthanhalfofthe unemployedarereceivingGovernmentbenefit.The explanationofthatmaybethatthestatisticsarenot constant,thatavolumeofseasonalworkprovidessome reliefandthatthe"proudpoor"arebeingassistedby privatecharities.Whilewedonothearofany(except theaged)dyingofhungerormalnutrition,itisinescapablethatsomethousandsofourcountrymenare sufferinggenuinehardshipandprivation.

Apartfromitseconomiceffects,unemploymenthas profoundmoralrepercussions.Theengenderingofa feelingofhopelessnessinthefaceofinadequatepublic reliefandindifferencehardensintoaconvictionthat theyaresecond-classcitizens.Itisnoteasytowatch theirchildrendeprivedofadvantagesenjoyedbythe youngstersofthoseinregularwork.Forthewomenfolkitisparticularlyheart-breaking,scrapingandscrimpinginanimpossibleroundoftryingtomake endsmeet.WiththegrowthoftheWelfareState charitiesarebeingcrowdedoutbySocialServices. Buttheywillneverbetotallyeliminatedbothbecause theywillalwaysbefinanciallyinadequateandbecause theyareimpersonal.Thespringsofprivatecharity willneverdryupbecausetheycanbringwarmth, humanityandspirituallovetokindlehopeinthe heartsofthehopeless.

Theyareeithersodumb thattheycannotunderstand theevilinthem,ortheir consciencesaresocalloused thattheynolongerrecognise,orworryabout,occasionsofsin.Itisaformidablechoice,andIfearthat someofthemarenotas dumbastheylook.

QuebecWillBe AbleToReceive AidToVarsities

Ottawa:Canada'sPrime MinisterJohnDiefenbaker hasannouncedaFederal Governmentplanwhichwill makeitpossibleforQuebec provincetoacceptFederal aidtouniversities. Theplanwillmeanthat some7,500,000dollarswill bemadeavailableannually -withtheamounttoincreaseastheprovince's populationincreases-for theuniversities.

Quebec,since1952,has notacceptedFederalaidto universitiesontheground thatsuchaid,givendirectly orthroughtheintermediary ofthespecialbodysetup bytheuniversitiestoadministersuchgrantsacross Canada,wasaninfringementofprovincialrights. Theexistenceofthesedangersdependsentirelyon theirsales.Ifthesalesbrokedown,thentheiradvertiserswouldnotsupportthem.Theywouldeventually "gobroke."Howcanthesalesbestopped?Simplyby parentsrefusingfirstlytobuyharmfulPresspublica-tionsthemselves.TheyMIGHTsafelybeabletoread thembuttheyareleftaroundthehouseforyoungand impressionablemindstopickup.Supervisionofthe papersandperiodicalswhichareboughtbychildren andyouth.Educationastohowharmfulthesecan betotheirlineofthinking.Takingpainstopointout totheirchildrenaccordingtotheiryearswhereanarticle,featurestory,picturestoryiswrongwhenitis "dishedup"bythosewhoareconcernedonlywith financialreturn.

Parents!Theresponsibilityisprimarilyyours,not thepolice,thecourts,theschoolertheChurch.They allhelp,butunlessthefoundationisgiveninthe homethenwhateverworktheseothersdoisremedial andnotconstructive.

Togivetoyourchildrenasoundphilosophyoflife isjustasimportantasteachingthemhowtoeatpro- perlyandhavethepropersocialetiquette.Itisimportantthattheyknowthis,notonlyforthemselves, butinorderthattheytoomayimpartittotheir childrenlater.

Letitbeoneofthefirmresolutionsthatcouldbe takenthisNewYearthattheloveoftruthandthe carewhichmustbeexercisedintheeducationofthose whoaregiventousbyGod,willbeparamountinour homes.Thatsuchadelicate,importantanddecisive fieldforthefutureofournationmaynotbelefttothe mercyofimprovisation,feebleselfcontrolathomeand bylaw,orworse,tobadfaithanddeceit.

ThePopehassaid:"Thefirmpositionsrequiredof Catholicsarethereforeasfollows:nottohavefearof beingsilencedas'scrupulous'andexaggeratorsin theirattitudeofdisapprovalofacertainPress.Hence nottobuy,norcredit,norfavourorevenspeakofthe perversePress.Nottofeartoavailoneselfofevery meansofchannellingittowardsaChristiandiscipline. Austrian-bornDr.Dengel,whoassuperior-generalbecameMotherAnnaDengel,hasguidedthecom- munitythroughitsearlyyears-whencanonlawstill barredReligiousfrompractisingmedicine-throughto itspresentpontificalrecognition.

FortheSisterspresentattheceremonyinstalling CardinalCicognani,theeventfocusedtheelementsof theirentirehistory.

First,therewasMotherDengelherself,foundressandsuperior-general,whowaspresenttokneelbefore thecardinalandofferobedienceinthenameofthe societytoitsnewcardinal-protector.

TwodaysafterthesecretconsistorytheCardinals receivedtheirredbirettas fromthePopeinasemipublicconsistory-so-calledbecauseitisopento friendsoftheCardinalsbut nottothepublic. HisEminencePaulCardinalMarella,whohasbeen servingasApostolicNuncio toFrance,didnotattendthe consistorybecausebycustomtheNunciotoFrance receiveshisbirettafromthe Frenchchiefofstate.This alsopreventedhimfromattendingthepublicconsistory.

Onebyone,inorderof seniority,thesevennew CardinalswereescortedbeforethePope,eachbyhis ownmasterofceremonies. manwhomGodallowstobe afflictedbyenemies,but whodoesnotforamoment loseconfidenceinGod.

Inverse25ofthePsalm hesaysofGod:"Neither hathHeturnedawayHis facefromme;andwhenI criedtoHim,Heheardme. WithTheeismypraiseina greatChurch."

AsthepromisedMessiah andRedeemer,ofWhom thisPsalmwasaprediction, Jesusquotedtheopening wordsasbeingapplicableto Himself.

SinceHewasbothGod andman,Hewasableto experience,notpreciselyas God,butinhishumansoul, asenseofthederelictionor desolationthehumanbeings Hehadcometoredeemdeservedbytheirsins.

Thatthisexperienceof distresswastemporaryand innowayassociatedwith despair,isevidentnotonly fromtheconfidencepervadingthePsalmHequoted, butalsofromHisownlast words,sofullofloveand complete assurance: "Father,intoThyhandsI commendmyspirit"(Lk. 23:461.

ManyCatholicsaskStChristophertoprotectthemfromdanger.

R.:Thereis,amongCatholics,apopulardevotion toSt.Christopherasapatronoftravellers.

ManyCatholics,therefore,wearmedalsofSt.Christopher;andaboveallonewilloftenfindaplaqueof St.Christopherattachedtothedash-boardinmotor cars. ThislastcustomisnotrestrictedtoCatholics.Ina surprisingnumberofcasesIhavefound,oninquiry, thatmotorcarsdisplayinganimageofSt.Christopher belongstonon-Catholics.

Progresswasslowatthebeginning-theycameand went;thensomelefttheirwivesandperhapsoneof theirwiveswiththechildren.Thechildrenwouldtalk toFatheratnightuntiltheyfellasleep.Theywould sleeptherethewholenight,soonmadeahabitof comingoverclosetoFather.Itwasnotsodifficultto getthemovereverynight.Adormitorywasanatural development.Soagirls'andboys'dormitoryfollowed thedininghall;aplaceformedicinewasestablished andlateraschool.SoMissionlifestarted.Actually thepresentsiteisthethird.FirstlyFathersettled25 milesfurthersouth,andafteralotofboringhehad toadmittherewasnowater.Thesecondsitewasonlysevenmilesaway,abandonedforthesamereason.It wasonlythreeyearsagothatsufficientwaterwas foundatthepresentspot.

TodayIhelpBrotherRichardandthreeSt.John ofGodSisterstoconducttheMission.Wearestill boringforwater.Thedesertisadesertsimplybecause thereisnowater.Westillbelieveinmiracles.The Sisterstakecareofthedininghall,theschool,the hospitalsandgirls'dormitoryandamillionother things.Thereissewing.mending,washingandironing,etc.

Thereare48childrenattheschoolandwehave79 childrenundersixteenyearsofage.Allages,of course,areestimated.OntheMissionwe'haveatotal of137natives.andmanyofthemareoldandblind.

Wetrytofindworkfortheyoungpeople.Wehavea fewhorsesandsomesheep.Ourbiggestworrywith thsheepistopreventtheblacksfromkillingthem. Wedonotbaptisethechildren,thetribalcustomsof promisingyounggirlstooldmenisverystrong.The oldfellowstaketheboysawayforhorriblepractices. OnJune24ththisyearnativeswalkedinfromthe bush-theyhadneverseenwhitesbefore-hadno clothes,andnumberedsevenadultsandsevenchildren. Asagirl,Corneliawas pretty,charming,gayand sometimesself-willed,witha naturalbuoyancyofspirit thatlastedallherlife.In 1831,whenshewas22,she announcedherengagement to27-year-oldPierceConnelly,anEpiscopalcurate.

Howorwhentheymetwe donotknow,butitisunlikelythatitwasthrough thenormalsocialchannels. Hisfamilywasintrade,the furnituretrade,withits auraofdustyroomsand shutteredwindows.

Cornelia'ssister,Isabel, withwhomshelived,op'Vosedthematchwithgreat vigourandpersistence.

Pierce'sIrish-immigrant backgrounddidnotdeter Cornelia,however.Like

manyothers,shewasswept offherfeetbyhischarm.

Helovedtotease,buthe hadthedelightfulgiftof makingothersfeelmoreintelligent,moreimportant, thantheywere.

Inadditiontohisconsiderablepowersinthepulpitandhispersonalcharm, Piercehadhadagooduniversityeducationwhichhe puttogoodaccount.

Heengagedinthereligiouscontroversiesofthe claywithaneloquenceand enthusiasmthatattracted theattentionandrespectof bothhisparishionersandhis bishops.

Thescenewasallsetfor astockromance:theyoung clergymanwitheloquence andsincerity,thebeautiful \yardforbiddenbyherguardiantoseeorspeaktohim. Therewerewhisperedconsultations,forbiddenletters andsecretencounters.

Throughouttheharried courtship.Corneliahadthe supportofhersisterAdeline, whosehusband'swealthand positionputheratthehead of society.

FromAdeline'shouse,on December1,1831,Cornelia wasmarriedtotheReverend PierceConnelly. Immediatelyafterthe weddingPierceacceptedthe rectorshipofTrinitychurch

inNatchez,Miss.,wherehe andCornelialivedforfour years. In1832theirsonMercer washorn,and,in1835,a daughter,Adeline,named forheraunt,towhomCorneliawroteoftenandaffectionately.Therewassomuch towriteabout:Pierce's goodnessandconsideration, hiseloquenceandinspiration,Mercer'sfirstwords, Ady'sfirststeps.

Cornelia'sletterswerealwayscheerful,fullofthe trivialitiesofuneventful domesticity,until,onSeptember1,1835,shebroke thestartlingnews:

"Piercehasresignedhis parishtoexamineatleisure andwithcarethedistinctive doctrinesoftheRoman Catholicreligion.TheattacksupontheCatholics haveledhimintoalaboriousstudyofthecontroversy,andhebeginsto doubtwhethertheyarenot morenearthetruththanwe. Heintendspreachinghis farewellsermonnextSunday.

WithinsixweeksPierce haddecidedtotakehis familytoRome.

TheEpiscopalbishopsand publicwerestartledandupsetbyPierce'sdecision. BishopOteywrotetohim:

Pierce'sactionsweretypical.Hisdecisionwasmade, sohemustimmediately makeitimpossibletoretreat.Hepublishedhisfarewellsermon,soldhisproperty,exceptforasmall housekeptagainstanemergency,andmadeapublic announcement.

Heputbetweenhimand apossiblechangeofheart theoverwhelmingbarrierof publicrecantationandridicule.

HetookCorneliaandthe childrentoNewOrleans, andwhiletheywere waitingtosail,Corneliafor thefirsttimetooktheinitiativefromPierce.Shewould notwaittobereceivedinto theChurch.

Hewantedtoreturnto America,butasCornelia wasexpectinganotherchild, theydecidedtosettledown inViennaforseveralweeks. There,onJune22,their secondson,JohnHenry, wasborn.

InVienna,Piercebegan toreceivebadnewsofhis Americanproperty.His brotherswrotetosaythat unforseenlosseshadseriouslyreducedtheincome fromtheirjointestate;they urgedhimtoreturnatonce.

ThePressbearsafrightfulresponsibilitywhenit playsupwretched.hole-in-the-cornerperformances suchastheTownsendaffair.AndtheirirresponsibilityhasrecentlybeennailedbythePopeinthe mostforthrightterms.
