Howmuchinmoral,intellectualandphysicalprogresshasbeen achievedthisyear?DotheboysknowandloveOurLordmoreasa resultoftheyear'sactivities?Aretheboysacquiringthemoraland mentalequipmentforaworthwhilelifeinthisworldandhappiness thatonecouldnotalways

Thesequestionswere posedbytheV.Rev.J. Hawkins,S.J.,Rectorof St.Louis'School,Claremont,attherecentannualspeechnight.

Alltheactivitiesofthe schoolweregearedtothose aims,saidFr.Hawkins.The fullanswerwouldnotbe knownuntilthedayofGeneralJudgment.Whathewas offeringwasanInterimReport.

Mostnotableadvanceof theschoolhadbeeninthe progressoftheSodalityof OurLady.Itwasmost powerfultoproducegenuine moralstrengthandstability.

ThedevelopmentofsingingundertheRev.J.Haste, S.J.,hadmadefortheboys' enjoymentandfortheir pleasureingoodmusic.

Debatinghadflourished, practicallythewholesenior schoolhavingtakenpart.

Referringtosport,Fr. Hawkinssaidthatwhat pleasedhimmostwasthat theboysseemedtohavethe rightattitude.

Thosewhoweregooddid notletsuccessgototheir heads,nordidtheygive sportpreferencetostudy; thosewithlimitedskill mademanfuleffortsdid notdroptheirbundlebecausetheycouldnotshine, anddidnotbegrudgesuccesstothosewhowon.

Publicsportnowadays seemedtobehavetoomuch argumentanddisputeabout it,toomuchquarrelling withtheumpireandthat sortofthing.Theyhadtried toeliminatesuchmanifestationsofselfishnessandthe begrudgingofsuccessto meritoriousperformers.

Apart relaxationfromthephysical itprovided,that wasthechiefvalueof schoolsportasapreparation forliving.Usedproperly, sportisagreatantidoteto selfishness,pigheadedness, bigheadedness.

Alltheseweedscould flourishinthecharacterof youth,andfromdeveloped manyoftheproblemsof laterlife.Teamco-opera-tion,acceptanceofthefact

werevaluableaidstoliving harmoniouslyinthemore closelyknitteamwhicha familyconstituted-orthe morelooselyknitunitofa professionorbusiness.

Whatwasnotcommonly recognisedwasthatselfishnesslaybehindmuchof whatwasunhappyinlife. Selfishnesswasdangerous andhadmanytroublesome andtragicmanifestations, rangingfromsimpledisputestodivorces,from pushingothersasideina queuetocripplingandkillingthemonthehighway.

"Indulgeachild'sselfishness,saidFr.Hawkins,"and youbreedateenagedictator,aninsufferableadult. andamiserablewreckof oldage.Icannotpromise thatyourrefusaltoindulge selfishnesswillnotarouse grumblingandgrousing-hutthatismomentaryand insignificantcomparedto subsequentmisery-andI assureyouthateverychild knowsinitsheartthatyou arerightandtriesthefuss andbothermerelyasa bluff."

Thiswasthejetage,continuedFr.Hawkins,theage ofspeed-theageinwhich mostlyeverythingwasbeingdoneatamuchfaster ratethaninthedaysofour forefathers.

Theycouldtravelmore quicklynow--dothewashingmorequicklyandeasily -communicatemorequickly andeasilybyphoneand radio.

BUTtheycouldnottrain charactermoreeasilyor morequicklymerelybecausetheappurtenancesof materiallifehadchanged. Self-controlstillcameonly bybeingabletosay"No"to oneself,andthatwasjustas hadtodoandteachasever itwas.

Thatphaseoffamilylife andschoollifewasaconstant,butbecausesomany ofthechoresoflifehad

Theyhadyettodiscover themachinewhichcould curbtheworld,thefleshand thedevil.Infact,those malignantagentsseemedto haveassumedaproprietary rightovermuchthatscience hadprovided.

Yet,theyhadthequeer spectacleofallegededucationaliststhinkingandplanningfeverishlyhowto changeeducationtoa changingworld.

Educationmustheforthe enduringthings,foranunderstandingofabsolute norms,abidingtruths-not foradjustmenttoacontinuallychangingcurrentofthe circumstancesinwhichlife waslived.

Thecurrentchanged quicklyandhaphazardly. Theymuststeerbythecompassoftruth,notdrifthelplesslywiththecurrent.

ErroneousViews

Acharacterinamodern novelsuggestedthatnothing wasmorewickedthanto teachboystoadjusttothe modernworld--anditdid seemindeedacuriousdoctrinetourgethatyoung peopleoughttoadjustto thetimesratherthantryto setthingsrightwhenthe timeswereoutofjoint.

"Webelievechildrenarc weakandimmatureand needhelp--wedonotbelieveitisright-totrusttheir judgment.Weholdnobrief fortorturingthem,butwe insistthatthereisafallacy inthebeliefthatwhatis distastefulanddifficultfora childmustipsofactobe eliminatedfromtheeducationalfield.

"Wedisagreewholeheartedlywiththeideathat standardsshouldbelowered tocomewithintheeasy graspofall--thatcurricula shouldbegearedtothe weak.Thatway,youmake thestrongweakandweak weakerstill.

'It'snogoodtalkingreligiontopeople withemptystomachs."Thatistheprac- ticalphilosophyofSisterVeronica,a DaughterofCharity,whoconductsa soupkitcheninFitzgerald-st.,W.Perth. SisterVefohica,youthfulanddynamic,was quotingthefounderofherOrder,St.Vincentde Paul,andtalkingaboutthespiritualvalueofher work.

Thesoupkitchenissituatedatthenorthend ofFitzgerald-street,notfarfromtherailway,in anareawhichissqualidandoppressing.

AsweenteredSisterVeronica,assistedbytwo ofher50womenauxiliaries(whoworkonroster andare"reallywonderful")wasdryingherhands inthetinykitchen.

Sheshowedusthelittlediningroomwhichhaseightbrightlycolouredtablesandcanseat32 personsatasitting.

Charityknowsnoboundariesofcreedandso theworkispromotedbyaninterdenominational committee.

AskedhowtheworkisfinancedSisterVeronica saidthatbenefactorsdonatevegetables,bread andsoupbones.Butshehastobuymeat.

"Whocomprisesyourclientele,"Ienquired.

"Whatpeoplecallthe'dead-beats,'"said SisterVeronica,"theunemployedandtheunem- ployable."

SisterVeronicahaslargerambitions,however. Shewantsa"placeofherown"withgreater facilities.

Shealsowantstosetupanightshelterforgirls whohavebeeninaninstitution.Oftentheylose theirjobsandhavenowheretogo.Attheshelter theycouldstayaweekorafortnightuntilthey foundsomehing.

SisterVeronicaalsoplansarefugeforaborigi- nalwomen,manyofwhomnowroamthestreets. ShepaidtributetothekindnessoftheLotteries Commissionwhohadprovidedallthekitchen equipmentfortheCentre.

Butsheneedsmuchmorehelpofafinancial sortandsheislookingtotheCathaliccommunity tomakeagrandgestureforthelessfortunate, particularlyatChristmastime.

CanberraSeeksTotalPower

WhateverthemeritsanddemeritsofparticularproposaLsthereisnogainsayingthattherecommendations oftheParliamentaryJointCommitteeonConstitutional Reviewarealmostunanimouslyinfavourofpolitical centralisationintheiradvocacyofnotableincreasesin thepowerandfunctionsoftheFederalParliament. ThisisatendencywhichhasattainedremarkableimpetussinceWorldWarII.Itisunderstandablethat theLabourPartyrepresentationshouldfavourcentralisationofpoliticalpowerbecausethatistheclimate inwhichsocialismmaybenurturedinthebestand quickestfashion.

Membersofotherpoliticalgroupswerepresumably influencedbythedefeatistnotionthatunificationis inevitable.Itistrue,asArchbishopMannixhasnoted, thatinthepasthalf-centurythebigunithasentrencheditselfinbusinessaswellasingovernment.Butthere isnothinginevitableaboutthatdevelopment.Itis thefruitofhumandesignorofhumanapathy.What hascorrodedthewilltostruggleagainstcentralisation ischieflyignoranceofthealternative.Attheheart oftheChristiansocialprogramme,tobeculledfrom thepapalencyclicals,isorganicdecentralisationfrom whichmaybededuced,theshapeofnewandeffective politicalinstitutions.

WhiletheprocessisintrainoffatteningtheCommonwealthattheexpenseofthesovereignpowersof theStates(mostrecentlyexemplifiedintheUniform 'DivorceBill),itisconvenienttoforgetthateachofhe Statescameintobeingassovereignandindependent bodies.ForaquarterofacenturybeforeFederation aspiritofnationalismdevelopedthroughourliterature whilethepracticalneedwasexperiencedforcentral authoritytoprovidefornationaldefence,regulation oftradeandimmigrationlaws.Forallthat,whenthe 'Constitutioncametobewrittenapropercautionwas observedintheapportionmentofpowerasbetweenthe CommonwealthandtheStateswhichcomprisedit.

WhoHoldsThePurseStrings

TheCommonwealthwasgiven39specificpowers; someofthesecouldbeexercisedonlywiththeconsent oftheStates.ButitwasmademanifestbytheFoundingFathersthattheStatesweretoremainsovereign authoritieswiththeirownappropriatepowersformally vestedinthem.Whathasprimarilyupsetthebalance ofpowerhasbeenthedivisionoffinancialcontrol.In thisrespect,inasocietybasedonsecularism(indistinguishablefrommaterialism)whoeverholdsthe purse-stringswillcallthetune.Section109ofthe Constitution,forexample,leftthewayopentoedgethe Statesoutofthetaxationfieldandtheexigienciesofthe warin1942providedthepretext.

TheencroachmentofFederalpowerisnonetheless realbecauseithasbeengradualandpainless.It representstheunfoldingofpowerimplicitintheConstitution.Sothat,itsactualisation,evenhaditbeen resented,couldnothavebeenopposedasillegal.Even thoughwhathasbeendoneandwhatisbeingcontemplatedmayaccordwithlaw,therearemoralviolations afootwhichwillreducetheStatestomerelackeysof Canberra.Therewillbenooutcriesfromthelarge,

wealthyStates,fortheyalreadyhavethelion'sshare. ItisthesmallStatesthatwillbehurtanditisthey thatmustraisethehueandcryagainstthecentralisationthatwilldevourthem.

Herearesomeprinciplesofoppositiontotheoctupus growthofFederalpower.

"Itisaninjustice-agraveevilanddisturbanceof rightordertoassigntoagreaterandhigherassociationwhatlesserandsubordinateorganisationscan do."

*Constitutionalchangesshouldbeinthedirectionof restoringtheoriginalbalanceoftheConstitution, particularlyinre-allottingappropriatepowerstothe States,especiallyinindependentsourcesofrevenue.

*InanyaccretionofCommonwealthpowerstheonus ofproofshouldrestonCanberra.

Itisplainthatthetotalitarianshopethatbymaking theprogresspiecemealtheaveragAustralianwill notnoticeheisbeingfilchedofhisliberties.TheJoint ParliamentaryCommitteehasconcerneditselfwiththe destructionoftheSenate'spower(originallyaHouse toprotectStaterights)andexpansionofCommonwealtheconomicinfluence.ButCanberraishungry, too,forcontrolofeducationandnativeaffairs.Ina worditishungryandwillgobbleuptheStates.

Mr.PriestleyMissedPointOf OurExtrovertedWorkmen

Mr.J.B.Priestley,theBritishnovelist,hasbeen plainlyunlucky.Hadhecometothiscountryprior tothelastworldwarhewouldhavebeenlionisedby thePressandtheintellectuals,foritwastheheightof enlightenmenttobeLeftWing,ifnotoutrightlyCommunist.Sincethewarended,however,theimperaialist ambitionsoftheCommunistblochavebeenexposed althoughtherealinnernatureofMarxismisstillimperfectlyunderstoodbymanyeducatedpeople.So Mr.Priestleywaslefttothemercyofthenon-Conformistclergy,theunionists,theLabourdie-hardsand theotherswhothinkitissmarttobethelackeysof theCommunistParty.

Inawordhedidnotreceivethewelcomehefelthe shouldhaveasasuccessfulnovelistandthewelcome hewouldhavegotinanoldertime.Butatleasthe mayhavelearnedonelesson-hewascold-shouldered becausehehelpedtheCommunistcause("aconference whichbecamemoreCommunistastimewenton"). Mr.Priestley'stiradeagainstAustraliawaspatchy.It maywellbethatwearebeeryandlazy-minded-faults forwhichtheclimatemustbearsomeresponsibilityas wellasasocialoutlookthatissomewhatwarmerthan England's.OnthequestionofdemocracyMr.Priestley seemsconfused.Ontheonehandhewouldnotadvise "anypublic-spiritedmanonanintellectuallevel"to comehere.Ontheother,itisabetterplacethan Britainforthe"ordinaryextrovertedworkman."

Thereisatouchofold-fashionedsnobbishnesshere thatneednotbelaboured.ButifMr.Priestleyissincereinthesocialimplicationsofhisplays,hemight haveponderedhowitisthatourextrovertedworkmen havegotsofaraheadoftheirBritishcounterpartsin suchasmallspanofhistory.Itmaybethattheextrovertsareplayingalargershareinnationaldevelopmentthantheintellectuals-indigenousca.imported. Andthatsurelyarguessomedegreeofdemocracy. These"ordinary"extrovertsarethegoodcompanions ofournationalandsocialexpansion.Wevaluethem, beeryandlazyastheymaybe,aboveself-dubbed intellectualswhocomehereonlytoexpresssolidarity withaphilosophy-bentonourdestruction.

Thegiftsoftongues,prophecy,miracles(including healing)appearedmorefrequentlyintheearlyChristiantimestoaidinthespreadofChristianity.They stillexisttodayasisprovedinthebeatificationand canonisationcausesapprovedbytheHolySee.Itis tobenoted,however,thatthecharismataalonedonot necessarilyattesttothesanctityorevenorthodoxyof theirpossessor.Norshouldtheybeconfoundedwith naturalpowersexercisedinthecontextofhysterical, emotion-chargedmeetingssuchascharacterisemodern "hot-gospellers."AMethodistministerreferredtosome oftheseexhibitionistsas"professionalevangelistswho emanatefromtheProtestantunderworld."

ArecentarticleontherelationshipoftheChristian Churchestohealingdeservessomeattention.Itisthe contentionofthewriterthattheChurchesinW.A.are notplayingtheroletheyshouldbeplayingintherealm ofhealing.Nowitoughttobemadeplainthatthe healingofeitherbodiesormindsisnodirectpartof themissionoftheChurchatall.TheChurch'sbusiness isthesalvationofsouls.Admittedlyitsmissionis greatlyfacilitatedwherepeopleareingoodphysical andpsychicalhealth,thoughmanyhavefoundsanctity throughsuffering.ButtheChurchcanonlyoperate onmenasshefindsthem.Itisnotherfunctiontoheal theirbodiesnorironoutthetwistsintheirminds. Thosearetherealmsofdoctors,psychologistsand psychiatrists.

VastIndirectResults

AlthoughitisnotadirectpartoftheChurchmission, manydoinfactexperiencegreatmentalandphysical relieffromtheChurch'sministrationsas.forexample, throughtheSacramentsofPenanceandExtreme Unction.AlsoastheresultsofthepracticeofChristian Charity,throughthespiritualandcorporalworksof mercy,muchisdonetoalleviatethecausesofhuman distress.Butdirectinterventioninthefieldofthe doctororthepsychiatristisaverydubiousproposition becauseitwouldnotgenerallybepractical,evenwere itdesirable.Whileitistrue,moreover,thatthereis atruerelationshipbetweenbodyandsoul,itisnot truethatallmedicineispsychosomatic.

Someofthepracticaldifficultiesinthisfieldarethat notafewoftheschoolsofpsychiatryprescindfrom fundamentaltheologicalideasaboutthenatureofman andhisneedofGod.Thereisnobottomtoapsychologicalschoolwhichdoesnotrecognisetheexistenceof God,OriginalSinandtheneedofgrace.Co-operation withasystemwhichissex-riddenwouldbeclearly impossible.Therealsolutionoftheproblemisfor Christianphilosophytobaptisemodernpsychiatryand formorepractisingChristianstooperateinthefieldof psychiatry.

Thereisanotheraspecttotheproposalthatmental asylumsshouldhavefull-timechaplains.Obviously agroupofministersdoctrinallydisunitedwouldultimatelytendtodeepentheconfusionalstateofpatients whosegriponrealityisalreadyslightornil.

RecentlysomenativesofNewGuinea,demonstrably sane,askedthatnomoremissionariesbepermitted amongthembecausetheywerebeingconfusedbythe divisionsofChristianity.Asimilarreflectionindelibly underlinedappliestotheproposedassistancetothe insane.

WhiletheprocessisintrainoffatteningtheCommonwealthattheexpenseofthesovereignpowersof theStates(mostrecentlyexemplifiedintheUniform Divorce.Bill),itisconvenienttoforgetthateachofhe Statescameintobeingassovereignandindependent bodies.ForaquarterofacenturybeforeFederation aspiritofnationalismdevelopedthroughourliterature whilethepracticalneedwasexperiencedforcentral authoritytoprovidefornationaldefence,regulation oftradeandimmigrationlaws.Forallthat,whenthe 'Constitutioncametobewrittenapropercautionwas observedintheapportionmentofpowerasbetweenthe CommonwealthandtheStateswhichcomprisedit.

WhoHoldsThePurseStrings

TheCommonwealthwasgiven39specificpowers; someofthesecouldbeexercisedonlywiththeconsent oftheStates.ButitwasmademanifestbytheFoundingFathersthattheStatesweretoremainsovereign authoritieswiththeirownappropriatepowersformally vestedinthem.Whathasprimarilyupsetthebalance ofpowerhasbeenthedivisionoffinancialcontrol.In thisrespect,inasocietybasedonsecularism(indistinguishablefrommaterialism)whoeverholdsthe purse-stringswillcallthetune.Section109ofthe Constitution,forexample,leftthewayopentoedgethe Statesoutofthetaxationfieldandtheexigienciesofthe warin1942providedthepretext.

Mr.PriestleyMissedPointOf OurExtrovertedWorkmen

Mr.J.B.Priestley,theBritishnovelist,hasbeen plainlyunlucky.Hadhecometothiscountryprior tothelastworldwarhewouldhavebeenlionisedby thePressandtheintellectuals,foritwastheheightof enlightenmenttobeLeftWing,ifnotoutrightlyCommunist.Sincethewarended,however,theimperaialist ambitionsoftheCommunistblochavebeenexposed althoughtherealinnernatureofMarxismisstillimperfectlyunderstoodbymanyeducatedpeople.So Mr.Priestleywaslefttothemercyofthenon-Conformistclergy,theunionists,theLabourdie-hardsand theotherswhothinkitissmarttobethelackeysof theCommunistParty.

Thereisatouchofold-fashionedsnobbishnesshere thatneednotbelaboured.ButifMr.Priestleyissincereinthesocialimplicationsofhisplays,hemight haveponderedhowitisthatourextrovertedworkmen havegotsofaraheadoftheirBritishcounterpartsin suchasmallspanofhistory.Itmaybethattheextrovertsareplayingalargershareinnationaldevelopmentthantheintellectuals-indigenousorimported. Andthatsurelyarguessomedegreeofdemocracy. These"ordinary"extrovertsarethegoodcompanions ofournationalandsocialexpansion.Wevaluethem, beeryandlazyastheymaybe,aboveself-dubbed intellectualswhocomehereonlytoexpresssolidarity withaphilosophybentonourdestruction.

Thegiftsoftongues,prophecy,miracles(including healing)appearedmorefrequentlyintheearlyChristiantimestoaidinthespreadofChristianity.They stillexisttodayasisprovedinthebeatificationand canonisationcausesapprovedbytheHolySee.Itis tobenoted,however,thatthecharismataalonedonot necessarilyattesttothesanctityorevenorthodoxyof theirpossessor.Norshouldtheybeconfoundedwith naturalpowersexercisedinthecontextofhysterical, emotion-chargedmeetingssuchascharacterisemodern "hot-gospellers."AMethodistministerreferredtosome oftheseexhibitionistsas"professionalevangelistswho emanatefromtheProtestantunderworld."

ArecentarticleontherelationshipoftheChristian Churchestohealingdeservessomeattention.Itisthe contentionofthewriterthattheChurchesinW.A.are notplayingtheroletheyshouldbeplayingintherealm ofhealing.Nowitoughttobemadeplainthatthe healingofeitherbodiesormindsisnodirectpartof themissionoftheChurchatall.TheChurch'sbusiness isthesalvationofsouls.Admittedlyitsmissionis greatlyfacilitatedwherepeopleareingoodphysical andpsychicalhealth,thoughmanyhavefoundsanctity throughsuffering.ButtheChurchcanonlyoperate onmenasshefindsthem.Itisnotherfunctiontoheal theirbodiesnorironoutthetwistsintheirminds. Thosearetherealmsofdoctors,psychologistsand psychiatrists.

VastIndirectResults

AlthoughitisnotadirectpartoftheChurchmission, manydoinfactexperiencegreatmentalandphysical relieffromtheChurch'sministrationsas,forexample, throughtheSacramentsofPenanceandExtreme Unction.AlsoastheresultsofthepracticeofChristian Charity,throughthespiritualandcorporalworksof mercy,muchisdonetoalleviatethecausesofhuman distress.Butdirectinterventioninthefieldofthe doctororthepsychiatristisaverydubiousproposition becauseitwouldnotgenerallybepractical,evenwere itdesirable.Whileitistrue,moreover,thatthereis atruerelationshipbetweenbodyandsoul,itisnot truethatallmedicineispsychosomatic.

Thereisanotheraspecttotheproposalthatmental asylumsshouldhavefull-timechaplains.Obviously agroupofministersdoctrinallydisunitedwouldultimatelytendtodeepentheconfusionalstateofpatients whosegriponrealityisalreadyslightornil.

RecentlysomenativesofNewGuinea,demonstrably sane,askedthatnomoremissionariesbepermitted amongthembecausetheywerebeingconfusedbythe divisionsofChristianity.Asimilarreflectionindelibly underlinedappliestotheproposedassistancetothe insane.

Stockholm:Twoprominentnon-Catholic Swedisheducatorshavecriticisedthepolicy ofSwedishschoolauhoritieswhodonotrecognisethemarksCatholicpupilsearninreligiousinstructionclasses.

JohnLandquistformerlygiousandmoralvaluestoprofessorofpsychologyand educationattheUniversity ofLund,andDr.AlfAhlberg,directorformany yearsofawellknownadult educationprogramme,expressedtheirdisagreement withthepolicy.

InstructioninLutheranismisobligatoryinSwedish schools,buta1952law saysthatfreedomtoteach otherthantheStatereligion isguaranteed.

Consequently,Catholic pupilsgototheirparish priestornunsforinstruction,generallyafterschool hours,thoughtheycango duringschoolhoursonareleasedtimebasis.

Ifontheotherhandtherepresentativeofthe ideologywhichconsidersreligiontobetheopiumofthe people:whotalksofcrushingpeoplewiththeirmight ifthereisoppositiontotheirwantsofworlddomination,wishestoseetherepresentativeofChriston earth,thentherewillbealotofchanges.Theonly troubleisthatthechangeswouldhavetobeallonone side-Communism's.TheChurchcannotchangeits oppositiontoaGodlessregime.Itcannotchangeits oppositiontotheprinciplesofCommunismwhichdeny humanrightsandliberties.Withoutgreatchangesin thesetherecouldbenofoundationofagreement.

PeoplewillsaythatifthePopedoesnotseethe PremierofRussia,hewillbethrowingawayopportunitiesofsettlingtheworldcrisis.Yetifhedoessee himandtheusualCommunistlineistakenofall demandsandnoconcessions,thepropagandavaluefor theCommunistblocwouldbeterrific"Seeweoffered andyoutheChurchturnedusdown."

Itistrulyadilemma.Ifevidenceisgivenofgood faithpriortothemeetingthentherecouldbesome groundsforhope.Sofarthewholematterisconjecjureandtheworldwillhavetowaitfortheformal requestandtheacceptance.

Ihavebeenwaitingfor overayearforstocksof thisbooktoappearinthe shops,andIamcertainly gladithasarrivedintime forChristmas,astheremust behundredsofpeoplein WesternAustraliawho begladtoreceiveitasis presentforthefestiveseason.

ThehermitofCatIsland is,ofcourse,JohnCyril Hawes,for24years.apriest oftheGeraldtondiocese, andarchitectofsomany churchesinthatarea.This. themostfruitfulperiodof hislife,iscoveredinthree chaptersofthebook,but thosewhoknewhimwillbe interestedinthestoryofhis earlylife,andofthe17 yearsthatfollowedhisdeparturefromAustralia.

MonsignorHaweswasa colourfulpersonalityatany time,buthisearlylifeis probablythemostfantastic partofall.Trainedasan architect,hebecamefascinatedinhisearlyyouthby thestoryofSt.Francisof Assisi,andabandonedhis careertojointheAnglican BenedictinesonCaldey Island.ItwasasanAnglicanclergymanthatJohn HawesfirstvisitedtheBahamas,butattheendofthree yearshe.cametotheconclusionthatAnglicanorders wereinvalid,andthatonly intheChurchofRome wouldhefindtruepeace.

Sobeganhislifeasa Catholic.Whilemakingup hismindaboutthefuture, heworkedasalabourerand mule-driverontheCanadian Pacific'Railway,andin1912 enteredtheBedsCollegein Rometostudyforthe priesthood.Itwaswhile therethatheheardBishop Kelly,ofGeraldton,appealingforpriests,andon October2.1915,hesetsail forAustralia,wherehe spentthenextquarterofa century.

Eversincehisyouth FatherHaweshadhada cravingforthemonasticlife, andifanyonedoubtsthatit stillpossessedhintwhenhe wasinGeraldtondiocese theyshouldtakealookat thepresbyteryhebuiltfor himselfatMorawa.(Incidentallythisisoneofthe fewbuildingsofwhichno photoappearsinthehook.)

Theauthor,PeterAnson, correspondedregularlywith FatherHawesfrom1939, whenhereturnedtothe Bahamastobeginhislifeas ahermit,untilhisdeathin 1956,anditonlynatural thatthesecondhalfofthe bookisdevotedtothispart ofhislife.

Itwascertainlyanother colourfulchapterinassalreadyrichlife.FraJerome, ashenowcalledhimself, thoroughlyenjoyedhisattempttoimitatetheFathers oftheDesert.Whetherhe reallyhadavocationtobe ahermitisopentograve doubt:hewasanaturally gregariousperson,fondof companyandgoodconversation,buttherecanbeno questionthathehadalot offussoutoftryingthe experiment,andthatatan agewhenmostpeoplefeel theyareentitledtoalittle extracomfort.
