Catholicsspeakoftheseas "UniateEasternChurches" or"SchismaticEastern Churches."

Atfirst,thecommonlanguage,Greek,wasused.But, gradually,differentpeoples begantomakeuseoftheir ownlanguages,suchas SyriacandArabic.

AtRome,naturally,Latin replacedGreek.Asitwas fromRomethatthefaith spreadthroughoutWestern Europe,Latinbecamethe acceptedliturgicallanguage intheWesternChurch.

Differentdevotionalcustomsalsodevelopedin variouslocalities,without affectingtheessentialsof thefaith,thesecreating further,andquitelegitimate divergenciesbetweenthe EasternandWesternRites.

Iamspeakinghereonly oftheRitesasRites;i.e.,as liturgicalformsofworship.

When, inlaterhistory, the EasternChurchesbroke awayfromtheCatholic Church, declaringthemselvesindependentofthe authorityofthePopeas successorofSt.Peterand headoftheUniversal Church, theyforsookthat unityinthefaithwhichis essentialtotheChurchas establishedbyChristand whichtheCatholicChurch haseverpreserved.
