Sunday,November29,isFieldDayatSt. Joseph'sOrphanageandSt.Vincent'sFoundlingHome-aplacefullofhumaninterest storiesthatcouldbemultipliedbythenumberofchildrenandtheSisterswhoworkthere. Peopleareinvitedtosharethisworkandthe interestoftheorphansandfoundlingsonthe FieldDay.

ThetwinsRodneyand Rex(pictured)havebeen atSt.Vincent'sFoundling Homesincetheywereless thanafortnightold.They belongtoagoodaborigine familywhosemotheris quiteill.Bothwereborn prematurely,one2lbsand afewounces,theother4 lbs.odd.Theonlyplace wheretheycouldhavebeen placedatthattimewasa non-Catholicmissioninthe North,butthemother wantedthemtobecared forbytheSisters.

TheAustralianNatives Affairsdepartmenthadthe babesflowndowntoPerth andbroughtthemtoSt. Vincent'sFoundlingHome.

Forawhileonedidvery poorlyinhealthbutunder thecareoftheSisters,both, asisobviousfromthephoto, areinrobusthealth.

RodneyandRexhave sistersandbrothersatSt. FrancisXavierMissionat Wanderingandtheywill jointhemtherewhenthey growolderandthusthe familywillbebroughttogethereventually.

Therearequiteafew nativechildrenatSt.Vincent's,sincethereisno otherplacefortinybabes togoto.Alotwereinillhealthwhentheyarrived, butnowsicknessisrare amongstthem.

Thetotalnumberof childrenpresentinbothSt. Joseph'sOrphanageandSt. Vincent'sFoundlingHome is170.

Abriefhistoryoftheinstitutionsisasfollows.St.Joseph'shasbeengoing for59yearsrenderingservicetoorphansandfoundlings.St.Vincent'sasa foundlinghome"started yearslater,in1914.

Priortothis,in1872,there wasaboys'orphanage whichwastakenoverby theChristianBrothers. WhentheBrothersopened Clontarfin1901,theSisters movedbackfromVictoriasquareandre-occupiedtheir presentsite.

Fromthedaysoftheirinceptionbothinstituteshave

beenkeptbusy,rarelyhavingmorethanafewvacanciesatanytime.Someof theSisterswhohave labouredfortheloveofGod havegivenmanyyearsto thisparticularwork.The lateMotherM.Teresawas attheorphanagefor31 years.Herpredecessor,the thelateMotherM.Claver, 32years.

ThepresentReverend MotherhasbeenatSt. Joseph'sfornineyears.

Over50marriedcouplesshowedenthusias ticappreciationoftalksanddiscussionson marriedlifeattheCanaConferenceheldre- centlyinOsborneParkparish. Sustainedattendanceover sixnightsandlivelypar-ticipationwerefeaturesof thisfirstregionalconference ofitskindconductedbythe CatholicSocialMovement.

SpeakingduringtheclosingsessiononNov.10,the Rev..C.Stinson,parish priestofOsbornePark,said thathehadrarelyifever seensuchanattentiveclass ofpupilsasthosewhowere present.

Ithadbecomeobvious throughthediscussionsand lectures,hesaid,thatmarriedpeoplehadmanyproblemstofaceuptoand wantedanopportunityto airthemandfindsolutions forthem.

Sr.M.RaymondFlannery),whodiedat GeraldtononOctober9,wasanativeofOtago Province,SouthIsland,NewZealand.She waseducatedattheDominicanConvent, Dunedin.

Afterleavingschool,she 'workedinthePostalDepartment,beingpostmistressatCromwell.

ShecametoBroomein 1914toentertheNovitiate oftheSistersofSt.John ofGod.AfterProfessionshe taughtinthemissionschools ofBeagleBayandLombadina. Formanyyearshead teacherofSt.Mary'sschool atBroome,shewaswell knowntotheresidentsof thetown,boththe"oldtimers"andcontemporary citizens.

Forthepast15yearsshe caredfortheparishchurch ofBroome,andinrecent yearsmadealtarbreadsfor

mostofthechurchesinthe VicariateofKimberley.

OnOctober1sheleft Broomewithacompanion Sisterforhospitaltreatment atSt.John's,Subiaco.

TheM.V.Koolamamet roughweatheroutsidePt. HedlandandSisterwas badlyaffectedbyit.

ShewastakentoSt. John's,Geraldton,where shediedonFriday,October 9. TheSistersoftheKimberleyshavelostazealous, ardentworkersandenthusiasticsupporteroftheir Province.Forher,of course,itisthegarnering ofthe"hundredfold."May sherestinpeace.

Mayland'sbigBlueArmyrallyhasbeen arrangedforNovember29which,beinga fifthSunday,willnotinterferewithsodality meetingsandotherMarianprocessionscentredonDecember8.

Therally,whichwillbeheldat8p.m.attheopen- airFatimashrineatOurLadyQueenofMartyr's church,willcompriseatorchlightprocession. IthasbeenorganisedbytheBlueArmycommittee inconjunctionwithMaylandsparishioners.torches willbeprovided.

Thereweremanyproblemsconcernedwiththe rearingandupbringingof childrenandwiththeper- sonalrelationsbetween husbandandwifethatwere qttenshirked,mainly throughignoranceorembarrassment.

TheConfessionaldidnot alwaysprovidesufficient opportunityfortheirdiscussion.Hesaidthatthe conferencehadbeenanoutstandingsuccessandhe hopedthatitwouldbethe forerunnerofmanyothers. Thebenefitofsuchconferencesweregreatespeciallyforyoungmarried couplesintheearlyyears ofmarriage.

Afterthefinalsession hadclosedmanyofthepar- ticipantsexpressedfavourableopinions.

Mrs.L.Smith,ofGlendalough,said:"Ithinkthe conferencewasasuccess andquitebeneficial."

Mr.N.A.Gaulard,father offivechildren,saidthat hewouldbeveryinterested inattendingthenextconferenceconductedbythe SocialMovement.

Coupleswerepromptedto bringtolightpractical problemsthroughgroup discussionswhichwereconductedonthemainsubjectstreated.

Thisensuredthatthe speakersdealtwithmatters ofdirectinteresttopeople intheaudience.

Apopularfeaturewasthe specialdevotionsinthe parishchurchduringthe secondweekatwhichhuSbandsandwivesrecited specialmarriageprayers andBenedictionofthe BlessedSacramentwas given.

DiscussingtheplightofstatelesspeopleintheMiddle East,itstatedthatsufferingtherehadbeenweighed lightlyagainstpoliticaladvantage.

Formorethan10yearsArabrefugeesnownumberingamillionhavebeen"living"inJordan(overhalfa-million),Gaza(almostaquarter-million),Lebanon 102.000andSyria96,573.Astrikinglytragicfeature ofthisdispossessionisthatofthemillion,children under15yearsofagecompriseclosetohalfthetotal. Thesehelplesspeoplehavebeenshamefullywronged andtheirconditionisprimarilytheresponsibilityof Israelwhichexpelledthemfromherterritory.But theblame,thoughprimarily,isnotsolelyIsrael's.

WhythenourlocalPressthinkstheArabcountries shouldbecompelledtoabsorbthem,withoutsomuch asamentionofIsrael,isquiteamystery.

Howeverthatmaybeitiscertainthattheposition oftheArabrefugeeisthegreatfactorofembitterment betweenJewandArab.Moreover,astheUnited NationsWorldRefugeeCommission(whichhascare ofthem)finishesitsmandateinJuneofnextyear,it

Thislatterproposalis,however,vitiatedbybeingtied inwithaJewishstipulationthattheArabStatesrecogniseIsrael-whichtheywillnotdo.

Nowthegreaterhopeofasolutionliesinthepaymentofcompensationfortworeasons.Forthefirst, suchaproceedingwouldleavetherefugeesthemaximumfreedomofchoiceastorepatriationorsettling wheretheyare.Forthesecondthecompensation wouldhavetobepaidbytheUnitedNationsandthat isjustenoughbecausescarcelyamajorPowerisfree fromashareintheresponsibilityfortherefugees' plight.

InthisWorldRefugeeYeartheUnitedNations shouldbepreparedtomakeareallyextraordinary efforttobreakthedeadlockandthisitcoulddoby guaranteeingfullcompensationtotherefugees.Compensationcomprisesmorethanmaterialhelpandrehabilitation.Itincludesalsoreparationforthedamage theyhavesufferedthroughtheirexpulsionbyIsrael. Thatnationshouldbeaskedhowmanyrefugeesshe ispreparedtoreecivebackandhowmuchshewlil contributetothecompensationscheme.

AsfarastheUnitedNationsareconcernedthis solutionwouldbecostlybutlesscostlythantheindefinitemaintenanceoftherefugeesintheircamps.It wouldliftaheavyburdenfromtheareaasawholepoliticallyandpsychologically.

ForChristiansanimprovementinArab-Israelrelationswouldfacilitateajustsolutionoftheproblemof theHolyPlacesunderaninternationalregimewhich wouldberesponsiblefortheirpreservationandaccessibility.Itcouldinthelongrunlaythefoundationfor ageneralConventioncoveringaccesstotheresources andcommunicationsoftheMiddleEast-oil,air,sea, canaland,pipe-lineproblems-whichwillcontinueto bedevilthepeaceoftheworldiftheyareleftasthey are.

Onenoteswithextremedistastethepublicityaccordedtheperformanceofa"JazzMass"atanAnglican churchatScarborough.Theministerresponsiblewas quotedassaying:"We'retryingtoexpressworshipin a20thcenturyway.Thislookstheanswer."Itmight beaswelltoremarkthatjazzisoutmoded.Itisbyno meansa20thcenturyphenomenon.Itscentralcharacteristicswerederivedfromthegenuinetraditional folkmusicoftheAmericannegroes.Eventhemodern atonalversionsofboogie-woogie,jive,etc.arewoven aroundtherhythmicpeculiaritiesofNegroidcounteraccentuation.

WhileitistruethattheNegroesdidanddoassociate thistypeofmusicwithreligiousobservances,itis likewiseafactthatitsadoptionbytheWesternculture isnotonlysecularistinusebutsymptomaticofcultural declineandintellectualvacuity.However,ifAnglicans thinkthiskindofrecessionisusefulfortheexpression oftheirreligiousviewsthatistheirbusiness.Tothe outsideritmightwellseemlikethelastshotinthe lockerforadenominationwhichislosingitsgrip, particularlyonyouth.

Theincidentinquestioninterestsusonlyintheuse oftheword"Mass,"whichinthecontextishighly offensive.DespitethepretensionsoftheHighChurch factiontheMasshasnoplaceintheChurchofEnglandset-up.ThelongpersecutionofCatholicsinEnglandtookthepracticalformoflawschieflyagainst sayingMass.Untilveryrecentlytheoccupantofthe EnglishthronehadtomanifesthisProtestantismbya formalrepudiationofthedoctrineofTransubstantiation andoftheMass.

WhateverformofservicewasheldatScarborough, itwouldnotappeartohavebeen(fromPressreports) evenapassableimitationoftheMass.Butinany caseitbordersonthesacrilegioustoassociatetheidea, VtheMasswiththepurelyprofanceandoftensensuousandsuggestivemusicofthejazztype.

ItissheernonsenseforMr.Halberttoclaimthat clause27(m)doesnotmakedivorceeasier.Why,it wasintroducedtotheStatuteBookofthisStatepreciselyforthisreason,thatitcanbeinvokedwhenno matrimonialfaultexists.Thatiswhatmakesitobjectionable.Intheoldconceptiontherehadtobesome defectinoneofthepartiessoseriousthatitunderminedmarriage.Nowyoucanbedivorcedjustbecause youfeellikeit,forfrivolousreasonsorfornone.It cutsawaysecurityandtrustfromthemarriagecontract.

TheCatholicpopulationof10,600has1,855children attending22primaryschoolswheretheyaretaught by25Brothersand142nuns.

Theprovisionofsufficientprieststocareforthe spiritualneedsofthepeople,nowandinthefuture, isadifficultyfacingeveryDioceseinAustralia.But perhapsinnoAustralianDiocesemorethaninthe DioceseofGeraldtonisthisproblemsuchanurgent andpressingone.

TherearebuteighteenDiocesanPriestsintheDioceseofGeraldtonfacedwiththetaskofcaringfor Catholicswhoarescatteredoveranenormousarea. TheDioceseextendsover614,000squaremiles,over one-fifthofthetotalareaofAustralia.Twoparishes, PortHedlandandWittenoomareeachabout900miles fromGeraldtonandtwoothers,WilunaandLeonora aremorethan500milesaway.Thedistantlocation oftheseandotherparishesdemandsofthepriestsin chargeofthemsacrificesoverandabovethosedemand- edof continuousallpriests.Thetimeandenergyconsumedin travellingandtheisolationfromthecompanionshipofonesfellowpriestsforlengthyperiodsof time,aresomeofthespecialhardshipsofthepriests inthisDiocese.

Withthissmallnumberofpriests,HisLordship BishopGummerhasbarelymanageduptothepresent toprovideforthespiritualneedsofhispeople.However,hecannotmakeanyprovisionfortheunseen contingenciesofthefuturewhichsicknessamongst thepriests-orincreasedsettlementofthispartof Western

Thepresentpositionasregardsstudentsforthe priesthoodisverybleakindeed.TheGeraldtonDiocesehasnostudentsinourMinorSeminaryatGuild- ford,nostudentsinthePhilosophycourse,andonly onestudent,tobeordainedintwoyearstime,in Theology.

Theincidentsreferredtoarethe"VanDoren"case andthatofa"discjockey"whoneedspoliceprotection.

Thefirstinstanceshowsahighlyeducatedman acceptinghugesumsofmoneytotakepartinatelevisionquizwhichusedtogriptheviewers.Wouldhe answerthisone?Theviewer-listenersympathywould goouttothecontestantandthereliefwhenhe answered,aftermuchtheatricalgrimacing,wouldbe tremendous.Yetheknewtheanswerallalong! Faked! Asvice-presidentandgeneralmanagerofindependent televisionstationKPLR-W, herecentlycompletedarrangementsfortheshowto betelevisedinSt.Louis.

Hisreasonfordoingso wasobvious.Sevenyears ago,hestartedBishopSheen onwhatwastobecomeone ofthemostremarkable careersintelevisionhistory.

Thestoryofthatcareer haditsbeginningsonelate summerafternoonwhenMr. Caddigan,thenvice-presidentinchargeofprogrammingandproductionforthe nowdefunctDuMontTelevisionNetwork,calledatthe Bishop'shome. Tradetalkhaditthatthe AuxiliaryBishopofNew Yorkhadcomeupwithan ideaforatelevisionshow.

Thereportsweretrue,the Bishopadmitted.Theidea fortheshowhadbeenofferedtoboththeC.B.S.and N.B.C.networks,butthey hadturneddownontheproject.Areligiousprogramme ontelevision,theyfelt,was apoorpublicrelationsrisk.

Mr.Caddigandidn'tthink so.Theyoungvice-presidenthadalreadycomeinto

ingvariouspublicservice programmesthatthenetworkhadtelevisedforthe NewYorkarchdiocese.

DuMontwasmorethan willingtogoaheadwiththe Bishop'sideaforaregular weeklyshow.

"Ofcourse,therewerethe usualproblems,"Mr.Caddiganrecalledataninterview.

Theratingssoared.Mr. Caddigan'sformerlimbbecameaverysubstantialand rapidlygrowingtree.

Thepopularsuccessofthe programmewascompletely duetoBishopSheenhimself, Mr.Caddiganfeels.

IfeveryCatholicwomaninthisStatewrotetoa FederalMemberofParliament(anyone)ortothe PrimeMinisterortheAttorneyGeneralprotesting againstthisBill,theimpactwouldbetremendous.

Asitis,oursilenceisconstrued(notunjustifiably) asconsentoratleastasapathy.Thisiseasytoprove. ACatholicwomanrecentlywrotetoanewspaperob- jectingtoobsceneadvertisementsofwomen'sunderwear.Theeditorreplitdtoherprivatelysayingthat theyhadreceivednootherobjections.Hisletterimpliedsomecuriousinferences.

TheVictorianFederation ofCatholicMothers'Clubs willproteststronglytothe FederalGovernmentagainst theMatrimonialClauses Bill.

TheFederationwillask its18,000membersthroughoutVictoriatoplaceits viewsbeforetheirlocalparlia ryrepresentatives andwillpresentapetition condemningthelegislation totheGovernment.

Astatementissuedthis weekbytheFederation's executivesaidthattheorganisationstronglyobjects toClause27M(fiveyears' separationclause)onthe groundsthatitgivesaguilty partyanopportunitytoobtainadivorcefromtheinnocentparty,orleavesthe wayopenfordivorceby agreement,irrespectiveof guiltorinnocence.
