Sunday,November29,isFieldDayatSt. Joseph'sOrphanageandSt.Vincent'sFoundlingHome-aplacefullofhumaninterest storiesthatcouldbemultipliedbythenumberofchildrenandtheSisterswhoworkthere. Peopleareinvitedtosharethisworkandthe interestoftheorphansandfoundlingsonthe FieldDay.
ThetwinsRodneyand Rex(pictured)havebeen atSt.Vincent'sFoundling Homesincetheywereless thanafortnightold.They belongtoagoodaborigine familywhosemotheris quiteill.Bothwereborn prematurely,one2lbsand afewounces,theother4 lbs.odd.Theonlyplace wheretheycouldhavebeen placedatthattimewasa non-Catholicmissioninthe North,butthemother wantedthemtobecared forbytheSisters.
TheAustralianNatives Affairsdepartmenthadthe babesflowndowntoPerth andbroughtthemtoSt. Vincent'sFoundlingHome.
Forawhileonedidvery poorlyinhealthbutunder thecareoftheSisters,both, asisobviousfromthephoto, areinrobusthealth.
RodneyandRexhave sistersandbrothersatSt. FrancisXavierMissionat Wanderingandtheywill jointhemtherewhenthey growolderandthusthe familywillbebroughttogethereventually.
Therearequiteafew nativechildrenatSt.Vincent's,sincethereisno otherplacefortinybabes togoto.Alotwereinillhealthwhentheyarrived, butnowsicknessisrare amongstthem.

Abriefhistoryoftheinstitutionsisasfollows.St.Joseph'shasbeengoing for59yearsrenderingservicetoorphansandfoundlings.St.Vincent'sasa foundlinghome"started yearslater,in1914.
Priortothis,in1872,there wasaboys'orphanage whichwastakenoverby theChristianBrothers. WhentheBrothersopened Clontarfin1901,theSisters movedbackfromVictoriasquareandre-occupiedtheir presentsite.
Fromthedaysoftheirinceptionbothinstituteshave
beenkeptbusy,rarelyhavingmorethanafewvacanciesatanytime.Someof theSisterswhohave labouredfortheloveofGod havegivenmanyyearsto thisparticularwork.The lateMotherM.Teresawas attheorphanagefor31 years.Herpredecessor,the thelateMotherM.Claver, 32years.
ThepresentReverend MotherhasbeenatSt. Joseph'sfornineyears.

Thereweremanyproblemsconcernedwiththe rearingandupbringingof childrenandwiththeper- sonalrelationsbetween husbandandwifethatwere qttenshirked,mainly throughignoranceorembarrassment.
TheConfessionaldidnot alwaysprovidesufficient opportunityfortheirdiscussion.Hesaidthatthe conferencehadbeenanoutstandingsuccessandhe hopedthatitwouldbethe forerunnerofmanyothers. Thebenefitofsuchconferencesweregreatespeciallyforyoungmarried couplesintheearlyyears ofmarriage.
Afterthefinalsession hadclosedmanyofthepar- ticipantsexpressedfavourableopinions.

TherearebuteighteenDiocesanPriestsintheDioceseofGeraldtonfacedwiththetaskofcaringfor Catholicswhoarescatteredoveranenormousarea. TheDioceseextendsover614,000squaremiles,over one-fifthofthetotalareaofAustralia.Twoparishes, PortHedlandandWittenoomareeachabout900miles fromGeraldtonandtwoothers,WilunaandLeonora aremorethan500milesaway.Thedistantlocation oftheseandotherparishesdemandsofthepriestsin chargeofthemsacrificesoverandabovethosedemand- edof continuousallpriests.Thetimeandenergyconsumedin travellingandtheisolationfromthecompanionshipofonesfellowpriestsforlengthyperiodsof time,aresomeofthespecialhardshipsofthepriests inthisDiocese.
Withthissmallnumberofpriests,HisLordship BishopGummerhasbarelymanageduptothepresent toprovideforthespiritualneedsofhispeople.However,hecannotmakeanyprovisionfortheunseen contingenciesofthefuturewhichsicknessamongst thepriests-orincreasedsettlementofthispartof Western
Thepresentpositionasregardsstudentsforthe priesthoodisverybleakindeed.TheGeraldtonDiocesehasnostudentsinourMinorSeminaryatGuild- ford,nostudentsinthePhilosophycourse,andonly onestudent,tobeordainedintwoyearstime,in Theology.
ThesmallpopulationoftheDiocesecouldbeone reasonfortheabsenceofvocations.Anotherperhaps liesinthefactthatfrequentlySecondarySchoolsand Collegesarefruitfulrecruitinggroundsforstudents forthePriesthood,ofwhichthereisbutoneinthe Diocese,St.Patrick'sCollege,Geraldton.Andtoits credititmustbestatedthatthisCollegeinrecent yearshasseenfourofitsstudentsraisedtothePriesthood.

Theobjectorislikeapersonwhoobjectstogoing toadentistwitharottentooth;heknowsthelonger hedelaysthemorecumbersomethetoothwillbecome andyethehatestheinconvenienceobviouslyinvolved.
Whilehehesitatesheforgetsthataftertheincon- venienceofalittlewhilemanybenefitswillfollow.
Thethird-andbest-objectionconcernsthecost ofthetransitionalperiod.Forinthisperiodalarge expensewouldbeputonthecommunity;newcoins wouldhavetobeminted,oldonesrecalled.Arithmetic booksandaccountancybookswouldhavetobere- editedandreprinted.

Thereportsweretrue,the Bishopadmitted.Theidea fortheshowhadbeenofferedtoboththeC.B.S.and N.B.C.networks,butthey hadturneddownontheproject.Areligiousprogramme ontelevision,theyfelt,was apoorpublicrelationsrisk.

Itsmostobjectionablefeatureisthenewgroundof divorceafterfiveyears'separation.Butevenwere thisobnoxiousfeatureremoved,Catholicscouldnotin consciencesupportameasurewhichwidensthegrounds ofdivorceineveryState.
Butitisofnousejustbemoaningamongourselves thegrowthofpaganisminregardtomarriage.We mustbeupanddoingbothasindividualsandinwhateverorganisationswebelong.
IfeveryCatholicwomaninthisStatewrotetoa FederalMemberofParliament(anyone)ortothe PrimeMinisterortheAttorneyGeneralprotesting againstthisBill,theimpactwouldbetremendous.
Asitis,oursilenceisconstrued(notunjustifiably) asconsentoratleastasapathy.Thisiseasytoprove. ACatholicwomanrecentlywrotetoanewspaperob- jectingtoobsceneadvertisementsofwomen'sunderwear.Theeditorreplitdtoherprivatelysayingthat theyhadreceivednootherobjections.Hisletterimpliedsomecuriousinferences.
Firstly,itimpliedthatthesilenceofhisreaders foundtheadvertisementsjustwhattheywanted-the tediumofadvertisingrelievedwithalittlespice! Secondlyheinferredthathiscorrespondentwassome- whatofacrank.Thirdly,heimpliedthatshewasina minorityofone.And,dearwomen,itisyourfault andminethathecanmakeafoolofaconscientious objector.

TheVictorianFederation ofCatholicMothers'Clubs willproteststronglytothe FederalGovernmentagainst theMatrimonialClauses Bill.
TheFederationwillask its18,000membersthroughoutVictoriatoplaceits viewsbeforetheirlocalparlia ryrepresentatives andwillpresentapetition condemningthelegislation totheGovernment.
Astatementissuedthis weekbytheFederation's executivesaidthattheorganisationstronglyobjects toClause27M(fiveyears' separationclause)onthe groundsthatitgivesaguilty partyanopportunitytoobtainadivorcefromtheinnocentparty,orleavesthe wayopenfordivorceby agreement,irrespectiveof guiltorinnocence.
Thiswasnotintheinterestsofthefamily,the statementsaid,andcertainlynotintheinterestsofthe nation.
