Themostspectacularpart of bytheafternoonwasgiven aplatoon,clothedin junglegreen,carryingrifles andOwenguns,andsup- portedbyVickersmachine guns,mortarsandtwo25 pounderfieldguns. Theyattackedafortified sand-bagemplacementin thebushattheendofthe oval.
Blankswereusedinthe Vickers.Dummybombs werefiredbythetwomortars,whilethefiringof twelveblanksbythefield gunsaddedtothenoiseof battle.
Thefallofshotwas simulatedbyexplosivesin thebush.Needlesstosay thepostwasannihilated.
Theafternoonclosedwith theformationofahollow squareforthetwominutes silentforthefallen.

LastweektheStateGovernmentopenedtheW.A. subscriptionlistforWorldRefugeeYearwithacheque for£1,000.SincetheendofthewartheFederal Governmenthassubscribednearly£5,000,000tothe samecause.Australiaasawholeispledgedtoraise £500,000duringthisspecialyear.
ForCatholicstheoccasionisoneofpeculiarsignificanceforitwasoutofasuggestion'fromaHolySee observerthatWorldRefugeeYearwasinaugurated.It hasbeenstated,withagreatmeasureoftruth,thatthe refugeehasbecometheworld'sforgottenman.Certainlyveryfewareawareoftheseriousnessofhis sufferings.Thecollectivequestionoftheworld'srefugeesposesagiganticandcrucialprobleminthemost humanofterms-freedom,jobs,homes,food,hope.
Thatthegeneralpublicissimplyignorantofthe plightofmillionsoftheirfellowmenisdueentirelyto theindifferenceofthegreatmediaofcommunication -Press,radioandT.V.Thatthepublicwillrespond withastonishinggenerositywasmadeplainbytheir reactionstotheneedsofHungariansfleeingfromthe Sovietterrorin1956.
Thenumericaldimensionsoftherefugeeproblem arestaggering.Sincet6endofthelastwarthere havebeen40millionsofrefugees.Bytheeffortsof ariousnationsandprivateagencies,manymillions citizens.Butstilltoday,almost15yearsafterwar's havebeenhoused,fed,clothedandsettledinasnormal endthereare25millionsofhomelessanduprooted peopleintheworld.
AustralianswholiveasanisolatedEuropeanoutpost inthehinterlandofAsianaturallyfinditverydifficult tograspthedimensionsoftherefugeeproblem,even thoughwehavereceivedthousandsofthesepeople intoourcommunity.
InEuropetoday120,000refugeesarestillunsettled. Eachmonth15,000refugeesfleefromEasternGermanyintoWestGermancampswheretheyalready numberhalf-a-million.InTunisiaandMoroccothere are170,000refugeesandthroughouttheArabworld (Lebanon,JordanandPalestine)therearealmosta million.AnothermillioninHongKongcompriseonethirdofthecity'sswollenpopulation,livinginsqualid shacksandonrooftops.
TheAsianpictureisevenmoreunbelievable.Four millionneedassistanceinKorea:2,500,000inPakistan andalikenumberofIndians;almostamillioninViet-
namand600,000ofJapaneseofKoreanorigin.Latest andsaddestinthelistofmisery-20,000Tibetans.
Statistics,however,dolittleornothingtoconveythe sheerhorrorofthesituationwhichinvolvesboth nationalandinternationalproblems.Thereisthe humanmiseryoftheagedKoreanforcedtofleefrom hiscountry,theChinesewomanstandingforhoursin aqueuetogetmedicaltreatmentforherchild,the hungerofArabrefugeechildren.Inthesewretched campskiddieshavebeenbornbythethousand.They wouldnotknowhowtoliveinacivilisedcommunity. Theable-bodiedhavenoworkandwillhavetolearn tolivealloveragain.Thentherearethedisabled (mainlythroughTB)whosefamilieswillnotorcannotresettleuntilthatpersonistakencareof.
WorldRefugeeYearissupportedby59nationsand directedthroughaU.N.agencywhichwilltrytostimulateGovernmentsandagenciestogivespecialconsiderationtorefugeesandthentoco-ordinateallthe activity.TheaverageGovernmentwillacceptonly able-bodiedpersons-thoseabletohelptheireconomy. Asmigrationtootherlandsisthechiefanswertothe refugeeproblem,itisnecessarythatsomeliberalisation ofpolicyshouldbemadetoadmitthesickandhandicapped.

Perhapsthe,mostsignificantdevelopmenttodate hasbeenthesuddenaversionwhichtheConference hasmanifestedtoPresspublicity.Surelythesubject ofpeaceshouldnotbesosinisterastocallforclosed sessions.ButwhattherealorganisersoftheConferencehavetohideisnotwordsbuttheintentofthe heartwhichnomancanseeanyway.McCarthyis deadbutKhrushchevlivesandhisposeasamanof peaceisexceedinglydangerous.Whenhespeaksof disarmamenthemeansthedisarmamentoftheWee. Whenhetalksofpeacehemeansthetranquilitywhich willcomeofamajorsurrendertoSovietaims.
Thiskindofdouble-talkrunsallthroughtheCommunistvocabulary.TheRussianscreateacrisis-as theydidoverBerlin-thentheyrelentandexpectto beregardedasheroesofpeace.Theytalkofexchangingartistswhentheymeanpropagandists.Theyprofesstoseevalueintheexchangeof"tradeunion"delegations.Buttheirunionsarenotfree-thearerepresentativesoftheRussianState.Inthefaceofthis monumentalhypocrisyonlyinflexibilitywillserve. ThedocumentsconsistofareportfromtheDukeof Serracapriola,NeapolitanambassadortotheRussian imperialcourt,statingthatEmperorPaulIofRussia had"thedesireofareunionbetweentheGreekRuthenian(Russian)ChurchandtheRomanCatholicApostolicChurch."
ThereportwascarriedfromNaplesdirectlytoPope PiusVIIbytheNeopolitanrepresentativeattheHoly See,CardinalRuffo,onFebruary7,1801.OnMarch 11,EmperorPaulwasassassinated,andhisprojectdied withhim,FatherRoustdeJournelwrote.
