Inquirer,NorthShore: Iaminterestedinthe doctrineofthebodilyassumptionoftheBlessed VirginMaryintoheaven.

R.:ThatdoctrinewasdefinedasanArticleofthe CatholicFaithbyPope PiusXII,in1950.Bydoing that,hemerelydeclaredto beanessentialbeliefwhat hadalreadybeenbelieved byallCatholics.

AndnotonlybyCatholics.Goingback400years, from1950to1550,wefind thatthedoctrinewasbelievedbyallChristians, bothEasternandWestern, excepttheProtestantminority,whichatthetimeof theReformation,lapsed fromtheCatholicFaith.

Goingbackanother1,000 yearsfrom1550to550.,we findthedoctrineexpresslytaughtandbelievedbythe wholeofChristendomwithoutexception.Forthe liturgicalcelebrationofthe FeastoftheAssumption bothintheGreekand LatinChurchesoriginated inthe6thcentury. Andthat,ofcourse,did notdevelopovernight.It presupposedthealready existentbeliefinthedoctrine.

GapsInKnowledgeOfFaith:

gapsinmyknowledge

R.:Ithinkyoumean, rather,inyourknowledge ofthehistoryofthedoctrinesoftheFaith,andof thereasonsforthem.

Thereare,ofcourse,AnglicantheologianswhobelieveinthebodilyAssumptionofMaryintoheaven.

EarlyTraditionOfTheChurch Inquirer,NorthShore:SinceIwasbrought upasanAnglican,Iquiteoftenfindlarge ofthefaith. thatistrue.Disciplinary laws,ofcourse,aswellas liturgicalformsofworship, canvaryaccordingtothe needsofthetimes. Butwhererevealedtruth isconcerned,theChurchis commissioned,asSt.Jude putsit,to"contendearnestlyforthefaithoncedeliveredtothesaints."(Jude, 3.) Thefaithoncedelivered tothesaints,however,was transmittedtotheChurch bytheapostolicpreaching.

ThusJ.B.Mozleysaid that, althoughintheearly Churchthereweremany legendsaboutherassumption, theconvictionofthe truthofthedoctrinedid notarisefromthelegends. Thelegendscanbeaccountedforonlybythe primitivefact.

In1941,CanonRees,of St.Paul'sCathedral,London,saidthatonecannot appealtotheprimitive Church,asAnglicansdo, yetwithanyconsistency denytheAssumption.

Dr.E.L.Mascall,ofOxford,saidhebelievedinit withallChristendomprior totheProtestantReformation.

CanonJ.C.L.Dart,in hisbook,"Guidetothe FaithandPracticeofthe Church,"1946,wrotethatit isunthinkablethatOur Lordwouldallowthebody fromwhichHederivedHis birthtocorruptinthe tomb.

Asourownbodieswill berestoredintheresurrection,soOurLordhasalreadygrantedthatprivilege byanticipationtoHissinlessMother.

Thesefewreferences showthatnotallAnglicans byanymeansdenythe doctrineoftheAssumption oftheBlessedVirginMary intoheaven.

Q.:IknowthattheChurch cannotaddtoortake awayfromthatwhich Christ,togetherwithHis Apostles,revealed.

R.:Asregardstheessentialtruthsofourreligion,

Some30yearsafterOur Lord'sdeath,partoftheir teachings-andpartonly -begantobecommittedto writinginthebooksofthe NewTestament.
