ThedeathofMothMaryIgnatiusStritch ofSt.Brigid'sConvent,WestPerth,onOct. 23,broughttoaclosealingeringanddistressingillness,enduredwithadmirable patienceandfortitude.R.I.P. Deceasedwasanative'of Ballyheigue,Co.Kerry,Ireland,bornofahighlycul- turedandliteraryfamily, MotherIgnatiuspossessed mostofthequalificationsof herancestors-immediate andremote.

TheStrocchios(theorigi-nalnameofStritch)migratedfromItalyinthe 10thcenturyintimesof persecution,andsettledin thethen-peacefullandof Ireland,wheretheywere latertoenduregreatersufferingsfortheFaith,and havetothecreditofthe familyatleastonemartyr. withThestrikingpersonality whichshewasendowed,radiatedinfluenceonall whocameincontactwith her.

Althoughherfather'ssister-MotherBenignusandherownsister-Sr.M. Edmund,bothenteredthe MercyConventofBrisbane, MotherIgnatiuschoseasthe landofheradoption WesternAustralia,

Thiswasprobablybecauseherfather'sbrother,the Rev,JosephStritchhad cometoPerthinthevain hopesofrepairinghis health.

Itwouldbedifficultto assessallthemembersof thevariousbranchesofthis onecommonstock,bywhich religionhasbeenaidedpriests,Brothersandnuns, possiblythebrighteststar beingthelateCardinal Stritch,firstcousinto MotherIgnatius.

Itwouldalsobedifficult tosummarisethemarathon effortsofMotherIgnatius asteacheratSt.Brigid's School,ascatechistatWanneroo,asscribeforthe Bushies,whereherfacile penwasperhapsusedtothe greatestadvantageand reapedthemostabundant harvest.

Thesolidfoundationof theChurchatWanneroo withitsgoodschool,competingwithanyStateschool ofthedistrictineducational worth,itsfinechurchwhere dailyMassiscelebrated,is dueinverygreatpartto theuntiringzealofMother Ignatius.

Besidesalltheclerical

workentailedinallthese apparentlysmallduties, MotherIgnatiusalsoheld thepostofMotherSuperior for12years.

Itwasin1949thather healthfirstshowedsignsof deteriorating,andshewas forcedtowithdrawfrom mostoftheactivitiesthat hadbeensopleasingtoher; yetshedidnotloseinterest inthingsthatwereworthwhile.

TheRt.Rev.Monsignor E.Sullivancelebratedthe SolemnRequiemwiththe Rev.T.Tomich-apast pupil-andtheRev.M. Toopasdeaconandsubdeacon.

HisGracetheArchbishop waspresentattheMass sungbythepriests'choir;

about40membersofthe clergyattended.

Theobsequiesatthe gravesideweremostimpres- sive,astheoccasional psalmsweresungbythe15 priestswhocametopaya lasttributetoherwhose worthandworkmanyof themhadreasontobegratefulfor.

Itentitleshertoaliving allowanceandafurther10 monthsfreetuitionunder ProfessorArturoBenedetti Michaelangeli.

Pauline,whoisapast pupilofSacredHeartConvent,Highgate,recently spentthreemonthsinFlorencewhereshegaveaprivaterecitalandwasalso heardonRadioItaliano.

Earlierthisyearshespent ashortholidayinLondon andGermany.InHamburg shemetandwasentertainedbytheSteinwayfamily, makersoftheSteinway pianos.

INDRAMAFESTIVAL

Therequirementsofthe greatMotuProprioofPius Xonliturgicalmusicwere carefullyfollowed,andsoon notonlyGregorianChantbutthegreatMassesand motetsoftheclassicalpoly- phonicwriterswerefeatured.

FatherLynchcontinuedto conductthechoiruntil1952 whenhewasappointedparishpriestofApplecross.HissuccessorisFatherP. McCudden.

Thechoirwillbeaccompaniedbyaprofessionalorchestraandtheywillpre- sent "Missatheshortbutlovely Brevis"byMozart. ThePilgrims'Choruswill besungbytheboysalone, alsotheNuns'Chorus "SilentNight." Thenanunusualarrange-mentbyFr.McCuddenof "WaltzingMatilda"will surelysendthefeeta-tap- ping,aswillthe"Happy Wanderer"whichreturnsto theprogrammebyspeCial request.

AtOurLadyofGrace church,NorthBeach,on Sundaylast11childrenreceivedtheirfirstHolyCom- munion.

Theywerepreparedfor theSacramentbytheSistersoftheHolyFamilyof Nazareth,whowereestablishedherefromtheU.S.A. in1957.

Atthebeginningofthis yeartheSisterstookover theNorthBeachparochial school.Theystillconduct akindergartenat226 Charles-street,NorthPerth. Thekiddieswerebeautifullyturnedout,eachgirl andboybeingaccompanied byapartner.

Thefirstandmostvaluablethingwhichwecanall doforourschoolsistopray,notonlybeforeweact butprayaswellwhenwecannotact.

ThebodyofactiononeducationinEnglandwas calledtheCatholicElectorsandParents'Association. Itgrewupasanadhocbodyin1942-44totacklethis specificmatterofeducation.

ItsimpactonParliamentwasstartling.Practically everymemberoftheHouseofCommonsandmanyof theLordswereapproachedandCatholicneedsineducationwerediscussedandsympatheticallyheardby himorher.

ItwassomethingwhichtheGovernmenthadnot expectedanditwasimpossibletoresistbecauseof thenumbersofpetitionersandthejusticeofthecause.

Oppositionwasnotnumerous,becausebigotryisa decliningcharacteristicamongstthoseofcreedswhere formerlyitwasrampant.

Andabigotinthesepresentdaysgetsscantattention fromfair-mindedlegislatorswhodislikecriticism whichisonlydestructive.

TheupshotoftheworkoftheC.P.E.A.wasthatthe CatholicParliamentaryCommitteeobtainedtheinsertionofthefamousS.76oftheEnglishEducationAct, "insofarasiscompatiblewithdueeconomyand efficiencyineducationchildrenshallbeeducatedin accordancewiththewishesoftheirparents."

ThisisthepracticalinterpretationoftheDeclarationofHumanRightsArt.26"educationshallbefree, fullandinaccordancewiththeparent'schoosing."

Theconsequenceofthishasbeenthatsuchmeasures havebeenpassedin1953andagainin1959withoutany oppositionfromeithersideoftheHouse(andvery littleoppositionoutsidefrompressuregroupsorganised tohandicapEnglishCatholicEducation).

Thelastofthesemeasureswaspassedlessthansix monthsbackbytheMacmillanGovernment.The sweepingmajoritywithwhichitwasreturnedtooffice indicatedthatwhatithaddonehadarousednotangible resentmentandmighthavegaineditnotafewCatholic votes.

InW.A.theParentsandFriends'Federationhas beeninstrumentalincreatinggoodfeelingandinterest forCatholicschoolsnotonlyamongstlegislatorsbut amongstmanypeopleoutsideParliamentaswell.

Therehavebeenotherfactorsaswell:agrowing regardforourclergyandreligiousandalltheirmany goodworksdominatesallothers.

ButtheParents'Federationhasspeficicallyworked toobtainrecognitionandsympathyforourschools.In itsownmodestwayitsecuredin1954unopposedlegislationwhichgaveatleastrecognitionofourschoolsas qualifyingforhelp.

TheenablingBillswerevirtuallyunopposedandthe Governmentwhicheffectedthemdidnotsufferatthe subsequentelection.

Ahandicaponfurtherworkinthisdirectionisthat beyondacertainpointreliefforschoolsandparents canonlybegivenonanAustralia-widebasis.Atleast thisisthecommonly-heldviewatthemoment.

AnythingAustralia-widehastobeagreedandcornmonedbetweeneachprovinceoftheHierarchyinAustralia.Untilrecently,atleast,therewasnosuchcommonplannoracommonagreementtoprofitfromthe exampleoftheU.K.andW.A.inthesematters.

Perhapsthen,thosewhoprayforeducationwould rememberaswelltoprayoften:"OhHolyGhost enlightenthesoulsofthefaithfulandguidetheir mindsaright."

InW.A.wehaveOurLadyofGoodCounselatNew Norcia.Thereisroomforaminorlitanytogreatand piouseducators-St.JohndelaSalle,St.JohnBosco, St.Dominic,andlegislatorssuchasSt.ThomasMore.

ApartfromprayermoreschoolsneedtoalignthemselveswiththeParentsandFriends'Federationwho havedonemuchforourschoolsinW.A.and,throtigh theirpublicistwork,havecarriedanawarenessof opportunityandmethodinaidforCatholicschoolsto otherStatesofAustralia. Suchworkreceivesverylittleofeither.

Thereareover250CatholicschoolsinW.A.Only 80giveitanykindofsupport;only58supportitfinan. cially.Yetallbenefitfromitswork.

Anentpublicistworkthereisonelittlethingwhich Catholicschoolscouldsoeasilyandsorarelydo.It isthesimpleactofinvitingStateorFederalmember ofParliament,senatororM.L.C,,roadsboardchairman ormayortoofficiateatspeechdays,prizegivingsand sportsdays. ToofewofthemknowoftheworkofCatholicschools andofthehardworkandenthusiasmwhichthey demonstrateatsuchfunctions.

Therewouldappeartobeconsiderableflutterings inthedovecotesofSovietpeace.That,ofcourse,isto beexpectedfortikeCommunists,whentheyusethe word"peace,"donotinvestitwiththemeaningit commonlyhaswithinthetraditionalWesterncivilisation."Peace"tousmeansthetranquilityoforder,that is,anarrangementofworldsocietybaseduponjustice andcharity.TotheRedsitmeansamanoeuvringof mentosuittheSovietpolicyofthemoment.Ourconceptionisbasedupontheeternal,unchangingverities. Theirsisanarrangementofexpediencybasedonpoliticalconsiderationsandliabletoavolte-faceatthe twinkleofaneye.

WhatisflusteringtheSovietdovecotes(atleastas regardstheapproachingCommunistCongressforInternationCo-operationandDisarmament),istherash ofdefections-thenumberoffledglingswhoareleavingtheparentalnestbeforetheyhavecompletedthe Soviet'sfullflyingcourse.Whatissovexingisthat thesedownytypesarenotcrashingaccordingtoplan oranywaythearecrashingintothefieldsofthedovehunters.Inthisconnectiontherehasbeenemployed anovelandveryinterestingtechnique.Formerlythe Redshavegotawaywiththeirspuriousconference, buttressedbyparsons,professorsandothernotabilities. Knowledgeablepeopleregrettedthegullibilityofthe elitebutfeltnothingcouldbedoneaboutit.

Butawayhasbeenfoundoutofthismoralimpotence.BrigadierSpry,headoftheSecurityService calledonProfessorStoutinSydneyandconfirmedhis doubtsoftheorigin,inspirationandorganisationofthe "Peace"Congresswithdocumentaryevidence..SubsequentlyProfessorSirMarcusOliphanthasdefected, thoughthereisnosuggestionofSecurityService promptinginhiscase.Hisgroundofwithdrawalwas theverysolidonethat"therewouldnowbelittlerepresentationofthepointsofviewofthosewhoopposed Communism."

Oneenormousadvantageofthisproceedureisthatit willenableAustralianstojudgeofCommunistfront activitiesastowhoaredupesandwhoaregenuine Communistsympathisersandfellow-travellers.Inthe presentinstance,forexample,wemayacquitProfessors StoutandOliphantofcollaborations.Theyarehonest butmistakenmenandtheyhaverecantedtheirfolly. ButMr.F.E.Chamberlainisahorseofanothercolour. Hisattitude,accordingtohisownstatement,isthat hehadnotevidencethattheCongressshouldnotbe supportedbypeopledesiringtomakeacontributionto worldpeace.Thepositionofhispartyisthat"any genuinepeacemovementmustbesupported."

Mr.DouglasHyde,whoknowstheCommunistmind aswellasanyoneintheWesterncamp,haspredicted thatthesuccessofRussia'sachievementwillbeenormous.Itseffecthascertainlynotbeenlostonthe Americans.ThePresidenthassternlycutthrough inter-servicerivaltytoplacerocketresearchincivilian hands.ButiftheCommunistsexpecttostampedethe Westintoapanicwhichwillresultinunconditional surrenderorevenwholesaleconcessionstheyhave sadlymisjudgedthetemperandmoralqualityofthe West.Itisamongthelesscivilisednationsthatthe superstitionofsciencemaylargelymakeitsimpact. TheoccasionwasWorldMissionaryDay(October 11)-justaweekbeforeMissionSunday.Onebyone thePopeconsignedablackcrucifixtoeachofthemissioners,whocamefromallfivecontinents.There were300maleReligiousand200Sisters.Amongthem wasagroupofyounglaydoctorsfromPadua'smedical missionarycollege.Thephysicianswereaccompanied bytheirwives.

JapaneseandAmericans:HungariansandChinese: English,IrishandGermanskneltside bysidetoreceivethesymboloftheir missionfromthehandsofaCommon Father.

PopeJohnbegantheceremonyby celebratingaLowMassatthepapal altarofthebasilica.HisEminence GregorioPietroXCardinalAgagianian Pro-PrefectoftheSacredCongregationforthePropagationoftheFaith, kneltnearbywithothermembersofthatbodycharged withspreadingtheFaiththroughouttheworld.

Some,itistrue,werepresent,throngingtheoutside oftheareainwhichothers marchedandprayed.What futilespiritofprideand lackofgenerositymade themfailtorespondtothe pleapreachedatMassin somanyparishes,forall whopossiblycouldtojoin intheprocessions?

Worsestillwerethose whowerenotpreparedto giveupevenoneSundayin theyear-tohonourtheGod whogavethemalltheypossessed.Theiryouth,their fiveandahalfdayweek, theirbountifulsportand pleasures,theirsecurityinwhatwaydidtheyshow theirthankfulnessforthese blessings?

AndforthefargreaterblessingsofCatholic parents,aCatholiceducation,theSacraments-how coldtheirheartsandselfish theirwillsmusthavebeen thatdaynottogiveeven anafternoontopaytribute toChristtheKingwhohad giventhemeverything.

Itispitifultothinkofthe thousandsofpeoplewho throngedtohearBillyGraham,andcomparethiswith thestatisticsofoarCatholic populationwhodidnot throngtohearChristthe King.

BecauseOurLordwasnot silentonthisgreatday.He spokethroughHisGracethe Archbishop,shepherdofHis flockinthisArchdiocese.He spokethroughtheRev.M. McKeonandtheRev.C. Stinson,leadingtherosary andotherprayers.Hespoke throughthethousandsof Hissingingandpraying children.

Atfirstthe'buswentquicklydowntheroads,but aboutnearCanningbridgeitfounditselfinalong queueofotherbusesandcars.Itseemedasthough "alltheworldandhiswifeandchildren"weremakije theirwaytowardsAquinas.

Whentheyarrived,theyallwenttofindtheirown groupsinthefieldattheside,exceptMrs.O'Reilly andthetwolittleoneswhosatonthegrasswiththe spectators.

Shecouldn'tunderstandwhysomanypeoplewho couldeasilyhavemarcheddidn't.Shewouldhave lovedtogowiththeSt.Thomas'SacredHeart Sodality,butofcourseshehadtotakecareofEileen andJohn.

OneoftheoldergirlsofSt.Theresa'scarriedtheir banner,andthenalltheMarilupchildrenfollowed, girlsfirst,ofcourse,andthenboys.Sothetwins wereseparated.AttheendmarchedSisterImelda andtheothertwoMercySisters.
