Obviouslytheremustbeaworldofdifference differencebetweenbeinghard-headedonprincipleand merelypig-headedonsentiment.Boththedifference andthedistinctionseemtohavegonerightoverthe headsofnumerousProtestantleadersthroughoutthe Commonwealth.InreplytoquestionsintheHouseof RepresentativesearlythismonthAttorney-General SirGarfieldBarwickde,cribedtheCongressFor InternationalCo-operation andDisarmament(tobe heldinMelbournefrom November7-14)asa Communistfront.

TheRev.AlanWalker whorecentlypreacheda MissiontotheNationall overthecountryapparentlydoesn'tkndw enoughaboutsavingAustraliatokeepclearof Communisttraps.Hesaid recentlyduringatelevisioninterviewthatthe MethodistChurchinVictoriahaddecided"tosupporttheconferencefully." Thisjudgmenthadbeen madeafteragooddealof considerationandinquiry. ButsurelyeventheRev. AlanWalkerwouldconcedethattheFederalAt0e, "NOTHINGTODOWITH PEACE"-Hyde torneyGeneralhadmoreextensivesourcesavailable tohim.AndSirGarfieldstatedbaldly:"TheCongress is votedCommunist-inspired,Communist-organisedanddetoCommunistpropaganda."

Headdedfurther,whatcouldbeoflittlecomfortto thezealofProtestantleadersdesiringtoco-existwith theReds:"Churcheswishingtohavegenuineandob- jectivediscussionsofworldpeacehavenoneedtojoin 'Communistfrontorganisations."Fortheman-in-the streetthatwouldhavebeenenough.Butitwasnot goodenoughfortheProtestantChurchleaders.The Rev.A.D.McGregorannouncedinMelbourneaweek laterthatsevendenominationswouldsenddelegates totheCommunistCongress.Thesewouldrepresent Methodists,Congregationalists,Presbyterians,Churches ofChrist,Baptists,SalvationistsandSocietyof Friends.

Itisvery,veryhardtobelievethattheleadersof thesereligioussectsaresincereintheirmotives.For behindtheIronCurtainandinChinaandthroughout Asiatheirco-religionistshavesufferedpersecutionat Communisthandsorelsehavecompromisedtosave theirskins.MorerecentlyRedChinahasshownitself tobetheenemynotonlyofChristianity,butofall religion.InTibetitisnotalonenationalindependence whichisbeingbludgeonedoutofexistencebutthe Buddhistreligionaswell.Howcanprofessing Christiansinthiscountrysitdown.withagoodconscience,toparleypeacewithmenwhoknowonly howtodestroy?

IrelatewithnorelishthattheProtestantChurches inthiscountryhaveanexceedinglybadrecordinthis regard.Atthedropofahattheywilltroopalongin thewakeofanyCommunistdog-fightwithouttheleast indicationthattheyaretoyingwithasystemfounded indicationthattheyaretoyingwithasystemwhichis blood-stainedrecordinhistoryforthepersecutionof religion.Butnoamountofpleadingorpressurecan persuadethemtojoinananti-Communistfrontforthe preservationofreligionorforsomesortofChristian solidarity.Onerecallswithpainthereceptionaccorded totheapostateHromadkafiveyearsago.Itwaslikea civicreceptionforJudas.

ACongregationalistMinisterinMelbourne,followingthefatuityoftheRev.AlanWalker,recentlyassertedwithill-foundedconfidencethattheCommunists wouldnotdominatetheCongress.Needlesstoadd, theRev.NormanSt.C.Anderson,asanationalsponsor ofthecongressandamemberofthecommitteeis alreadydominated.

thevarioustypesofdupeswholendtheiraidtothe Communistcausethroughassociationwiththesehighsoundingcampaigns.

DouglasHyde,one-timeleadingCommunist,suc- cientlyexposedtherealnatureofthesepeacecrusades: "TheCommunistpeacecampaignsareamongthemost successfulmeansofunderminingtheWest.

DouglasHydeputshisfingerononeofthechief difficultieswhichbesetstheindividualwhentryingto decidehisattitudetowardsthesespuriouspeacecru- sades-thefearofbeingaccusedof"warmongering."

Agoodmanypeople,someoftheminpositionsof leadership,genuinelyseemtothinkthatunlessthey supporteveryvoiceraisedforpeacetheyautomaticallysupportwar.

TheCommunistsknowwellhowetoplayuponthese sentiments.Facedwiththisfalse,butseeminglyreal, dilemmamostpeopletakeaneutralline.Butthetime islongoverdueforthemassofnon-Catholics(whoare religiouslysincere)iftheywillnotjoinCatholicsin thefightforsurvivalagainstCommunism,toform theirownorganisation-orperish.

TheCommunistsknowwellhowtoplayuponthese

Aswegotopress,wordistohandthattherecent AnglicanSynodinMelbournehasmadeamovetomeet thechallengeofCommunism.Amotionwaspassed whichstated:"ThisSynodisconvincedthatCommunismis constitutesabsolutelyincompatiblewithChristianityand adeadlyandgrowingchallengetoit."

DespitethezestyhastewithwhichthenewlyreturnedConservativeGovernmentinEngland(and, ofcourse,itstoadiesinthiscountryinPressandParliament)isurgingaSummitConference,thereisample reasonfordeliberation,consultationandpreparation. TheBritishPress,atleast,isbesetwiththefoolish notionthat,sincethedeathofJohnFosterDullesand thevisitofMacMillantoMoscow,Britainsomehow hasassumedleadershipoftheWesternalliance.So farwasthisdelusionalnonsensedriventhatdifferences withFranceandWestGermanywereplayedupuntil anactualestrangementtookplace.Adenauer,afew monthsago,complainedpubliclyofthehatecampaign beingwagedinEnglandagainsttheGermans.

Itisimperativetounderstand,however,thatinthis matterthePressisundoubtedlyechoingofficialBritish opiniontoalargerdegree.ForonethingBritainno longeroccupiesadominatingpositionintheeconomy ofEurope.WesternGermany,earlythisyear,surpassedU.K.productionfigures.Inadditionbyholding alooffromtheCommonMarket,Englishindustrialists andpoliticiansnotonlyfailedtowreckthearrangementbutalsofoundthemselvesatagravedisadvantage throughtheirself-exclusion.

Britain'sanxietyforaSummitConferenceatalmost onycosthaslittleappealtotheAmericanswhowant toseepracticalproofofachangeinSoviettruculence. Threeyearsagoonthe23rdofthismonth agroupofstudentswerewaitingoutsidethe RadioBuilding,Budapest.Theyhodcome onapeacefulpurpose-toseeaboutthe broadcastoftheirdemandsforfreeelections, there-establishmentofpoliticalpartiesand thewithdrawalofSoviettroops.TheirdemandsexpressedthediscontentoftheHungariannation.

Eveningcameon.Asthey waitedfortheoutcomeof negotiationswiththeradio's directortheywerejoined bycityworkers.Timepassed,butthestudents'delegationdidnotreturn;it wasrumouredthatoneof themhadbeenshot.

Suddenly,alittleafter nine,teargasbombswere thrownfromtheRadio Building,andtheState securitypoliceopenedfire onthedefencelessgathering,killingsomeand woundingothers.

Fromthatmomentbegantheviolentuprisingofa nationwhichweremember,byitsruthlessSoviet surpression,astheHungarianmassacre. afterEventsfollowedquickly thefirstshots.Workers fromthesurroundingdistrictscamepouringintothe cityintrucksseizedor orhandedovertothem.

TheHungarianpoliceand soldiers(exceptforsome

ForsoontheSovietswere toregaintheirlostsupremacybyanotherferiociouslyanti-workingclassfight whichbeganbyapieceof superbtreachery.Ithappenedlikethis:

HisGraceArchbishop DuhiglastSundayweek solemnlyblessedandlaid thefoundation-stoneofa newmonasteryfortheCarmeliteNunsatOrmiston.

Themonasterywillbe builtonthehistoricsiteof OrmistonHouse,whichhas beenprocuredbytheCarmeliteNunswhohaveconductedamonasteryat Auchenflowersince1927.

OrmistonHousewasbuilt byCaptainLouisHope, founderofthesugarindustry,117yearsago.

Ithasbeenanhistorical showplaceinrecentyears andwillbepreservedas suchbythenuns.

Itstandsnearthesiteof thefirstAustraliansugar mill,wheresugarwasproducedforthefirsttimein 1863.

AchbishopDuhig,accompanied byArchbishop O'Donnell,Coadjutor-Archbishop,firstblessedandlaid thestoneoftheproposed monastery,whichisdesignedeventuallytoincludea publicchurchandchapel forthenuns.

TherewasatragicsceneatCharlevilleinthe Toowoombadiocese,lastMondayweek,whenSt. Mary'sChurchandtheneighbouringpresbytery wererazedtothegroundbyanuncontrollable fire.HisGraceArchbishopDuhigofficiatedatthe originalblessingofthechurch.

Thefirebrokeoutat3.30p.m.andwithin30 minutesbothbuildingswereatotalloss.Cause ofthefireisunknown.

Shortlybeforetheoutbreakagroupoflocal Catholicchildrenhadpaidanafter-schoolvisitto thechurch.

Thefirebeganinthechurchandachangein thewindswepttheflamesontothepresbytery. Nothingwassaved.

WhenRev.FatherF.Hallopenedthedooron tothesanctuaryhewasmetbyawallofflame. Whenthetabernaclewasexaminedafterthefire, itwasfoundthatthesacredvesselshadbeen meltedbytheheat.Theparishrecordsinthe presbyteryweresaved.

TheChurch,whichwasabout40yearsold, wasrecentlyrenovatedandenlarged.Renovations tothepresbyteryhadjustbeencompleted. Painterswere,infact,stillonthejobwhenthe firebrokeout.

HisLordshipBishopBrennan,ofToowoomba, hasopenedanappealtorebuildthechurchand presbytery.Itisbeingconductedinallparishes oftheToowoombadiocese,butCatholicseverywhereareinvitedtoassisttheCharlevilleparish recoverfromthetragicblowithasreceived.

Thetwoteamstooktheir positionsforthefirstquarterandMaylandsled6 goalsto3attheendofthis quarter.Subiacofought backstronglyandmanaged topickupthe3goaldifferenceinthesecondquarter,makingthehalftime score11goalsall.

IwonderhowmuchCatholicparentshavepaidover thelastseventyorsoyearstohelpmaintainAustralia's dualsystemofeducation?Itmustbeahugeamount.

ACurrentAffairsBulletingivesthefiguresfor Governmenteducationalexpenditurefrom1950-1954 inclusively:thecumulativetotalforthesefiveyears was£270,872,784.

Itcomments:"Sincetheaboveamountshaveno referencetonon-Governmentschools,andsincethe Catholicschoolsaloneareeducatingsome25percent. ofthenumberofprimaryand26percent.ofthis numberofsecondaryschoolchildrenthroughoutAustralia,theterm"economicdifficulty"mustbesomethinglessthananunderstatement."

Duringthewartherewasanaccumulationofcredit duetoenforcedbuildingrestrictions.By1956,however,allcreditwasgoneanddebthadgenerallytaken itsplace.

Asthecountryexpandsandnewhomesarebuiltby youngcouples,newschoolsmustalsobebuilt.Their costhastobemetbyyoungparentswhosechildren usetheschools-acostwhichisactuallyfeltbythose whoarebuyinghouses,furniture,etc.

TheactionoftheseyoungCatholicparentswhoare strugglingtosetuphomesoftheirownandtopayfor theChristianeducationoftheirchildrencanonlybe describedasheroic.

Yetheroismisnotforeveryone.ManyCatholic parentsarefindingthepresentcrisisineducation nearlyintolerable-acrisiswhichisduetotwomain factors.

Firstly,thereisthehugeincreaseinnumbersdueto anincreasedbirthrate,migrationandthetendencyof Catholicchildrentoremainlongeratschool.This increasehastheaddeddisadvantageofbeingsudden.

During1946-56thenumberofCatholicschoolchildreninAustraliarosefrom211,000to348,000,anincreaseof64percent.By1964theincreaseisexpected tohaverisenby105percent.!

Thesecondfactormakingtheburdennearlyintolerableisthelackofreligiousvocations.Theseare ontheincrease,butcomparedtotheneedstheyare notenough.

Asaresultlayteachersmustbetrainedand,of course,paid.Religiousteachersbecauseofthevoluntaryausterityandsimplicityoftheirliveshaven't manyfinancialproblems.

Withthelayteacherlivingintheworldandhaving afamilytosupport,thematteroffinanceisofvital importance.

Alreadytheprospectforanylayteacherisdismal: hecanlookforwardtoovercrowdedclassesandsee manyofhiseffortsfrustratedbyhissuperhumantask.

Butifwecannotevenguaranteereasonablefinancial securityourchancesofattractingalargenumberof layteacherstoourschoolsare-humanlyspeaking -nil.

Arisingfromthesetwofactorsofthehugeincrease inpupilsandthelackofteacherswiththisincrease comesanotherdifficultywhichisthemostworrying ofthelot.IrefertotheoverflowofCatholicchildren toStateschools.

TheCurrentAffairsBulltinalreadyreferredtogives usthisfigure:"Ithasbeenconservativelyestimated thatthenumberwhohavehadtoberefusedadmission tonon-Governmentschoolsjumpedbetween1953-1956 byatleast64,000,ofwhomupwardsof50,000would beCatholics.Thisnumberisnowcertainlyhigherin bothsystems."
