TheCommunistsknowwellhowetoplayuponthese sentiments.Facedwiththisfalse,butseeminglyreal, dilemmamostpeopletakeaneutralline.Butthetime islongoverdueforthemassofnon-Catholics(whoare religiouslysincere)iftheywillnotjoinCatholicsin thefightforsurvivalagainstCommunism,toform theirownorganisation-orperish.

DespitethezestyhastewithwhichthenewlyreturnedConservativeGovernmentinEngland(and, ofcourse,itstoadiesinthiscountryinPressandParliament)isurgingaSummitConference,thereisample reasonfordeliberation,consultationandpreparation. TheBritishPress,atleast,isbesetwiththefoolish notionthat,sincethedeathofJohnFosterDullesand thevisitofMacMillantoMoscow,Britainsomehow hasassumedleadershipoftheWesternalliance.So farwasthisdelusionalnonsensedriventhatdifferences withFranceandWestGermanywereplayedupuntil anactualestrangementtookplace.Adenauer,afew monthsago,complainedpubliclyofthehatecampaign beingwagedinEnglandagainsttheGermans.
Itisimperativetounderstand,however,thatinthis matterthePressisundoubtedlyechoingofficialBritish opiniontoalargerdegree.ForonethingBritainno longeroccupiesadominatingpositionintheeconomy ofEurope.WesternGermany,earlythisyear,surpassedU.K.productionfigures.Inadditionbyholding alooffromtheCommonMarket,Englishindustrialists andpoliticiansnotonlyfailedtowreckthearrangementbutalsofoundthemselvesatagravedisadvantage throughtheirself-exclusion.

Thereisnogainsayingthattheargumentwhich finallycountswiththeSovietispowerandthatwas whereDullesscoredheavilydespitethesillychorus of"brinkmanship."ItiswhereEisenhowerscored, too,withKhrushchevontheBerlinquesion.Andit isalsothereasonwhyBritainnotonlyfailstoimpress theRussiansbutfindsherselfalmostisolatedfromher ownfriends.Britainhasneitherthemoral,financial, economicormilitarystrengthtoleadtheWestern Alliance.EconomicallyoutstrippedbyGermany,she isnowchallengedmilitarilybyFrance.Andofcourse, thereisAmerica"uberAlles."

AburialplotatRookwood Cemetery,Sydney,fordestituepoorismaintainedas aspecialworkbytheLiverpool-ParramattaParticular CounciloftheSocietyofSt. VincentdePaul. The72-graveplotwas donatedtothesocietyby theTrusteesoftheCatholic Cemetery,Rookwood,and waslaidoutbythevoluntaryeffortofmembersof thesociety.

OntheSaturdaybeforethefeastofChristtheKing therewasaknockatthedoor,andwhoshouldbe standingtherebutBillBeaumont.
"Igotthreedays'holidaysduetome,soIthought IwouldcomeuptoPerthandseeyouallagain,"he said.
Thefamilymadehisverywelcomeandhetold themthathewasgettingonwellinhisnewjob.He hadbroughtpresentsforallofthem,cigarettesforMr. O'Reilly,apairofprettyglassjamdishesforMrs. O'Reilly,afountainpenforKevin,ascarfforMary andlolliesfortherestofthechildren.

Thematchwasbetween SubiacoandMaylands,who wereplayingoffforthe"A" Reservepremiership,won lastyearbyGraylandsCottesloe.
Thetwoteamstooktheir positionsforthefirstquarterandMaylandsled6 goalsto3attheendofthis quarter.Subiacofought backstronglyandmanaged topickupthe3goaldifferenceinthesecondquarter,makingthehalftime score11goalsall.
Thethirdquarterproved excitingandproducedsome first-classbasketballwith superbpassingontheMaylandssideandbrilliantdefendingfromtheSubiaco team.
JudyTownsendwasvery muchonformandwaswell backedupbytherestofthe Subiacoside.Thescoreat thecloseofthethirdquarterwas17-16.

Duringthewartherewasanaccumulationofcredit duetoenforcedbuildingrestrictions.By1956,however,allcreditwasgoneanddebthadgenerallytaken itsplace.
Asthecountryexpandsandnewhomesarebuiltby youngcouples,newschoolsmustalsobebuilt.Their costhastobemetbyyoungparentswhosechildren usetheschools-acostwhichisactuallyfeltbythose whoarebuyinghouses,furniture,etc.
TheactionoftheseyoungCatholicparentswhoare strugglingtosetuphomesoftheirownandtopayfor theChristianeducationoftheirchildrencanonlybe describedasheroic.
Yetheroismisnotforeveryone.ManyCatholic parentsarefindingthepresentcrisisineducation nearlyintolerable-acrisiswhichisduetotwomain factors.
Firstly,thereisthehugeincreaseinnumbersdueto anincreasedbirthrate,migrationandthetendencyof Catholicchildrentoremainlongeratschool.This increasehastheaddeddisadvantageofbeingsudden.
During1946-56thenumberofCatholicschoolchildreninAustraliarosefrom211,000to348,000,anincreaseof64percent.By1964theincreaseisexpected tohaverisenby105percent.!
Thesecondfactormakingtheburdennearlyintolerableisthelackofreligiousvocations.Theseare ontheincrease,butcomparedtotheneedstheyare notenough.
Asaresultlayteachersmustbetrainedand,of course,paid.Religiousteachersbecauseofthevoluntaryausterityandsimplicityoftheirliveshaven't manyfinancialproblems.
Withthelayteacherlivingintheworldandhaving afamilytosupport,thematteroffinanceisofvital importance.
Alreadytheprospectforanylayteacherisdismal: hecanlookforwardtoovercrowdedclassesandsee manyofhiseffortsfrustratedbyhissuperhumantask.
Butifwecannotevenguaranteereasonablefinancial securityourchancesofattractingalargenumberof layteacherstoourschoolsare-humanlyspeaking -nil.
Arisingfromthesetwofactorsofthehugeincrease inpupilsandthelackofteacherswiththisincrease comesanotherdifficultywhichisthemostworrying ofthelot.IrefertotheoverflowofCatholicchildren toStateschools.
TheCurrentAffairsBulltinalreadyreferredtogives usthisfigure:"Ithasbeenconservativelyestimated thatthenumberwhohavehadtoberefusedadmission tonon-Governmentschoolsjumpedbetween1953-1956 byatleast64,000,ofwhomupwardsof50,000would beCatholics.Thisnumberisnowcertainlyhigherin bothsystems."
