TheapparitionsatFatimaaretobeacceptedagainst thebackgroundandinthespiritofofficialCatholic teaching.Therefore,IcannotbelievethatMaryis displeasedbecausethe"good"donot"heedhermessage."

HermessagecanonlybetheloveofGod,obedience toHiswillandobediencetotheChurchHehasput intotheworld.

Ifpeopleare"good,"then,Ishouldthink,theyare pleasingtoGod;how,then,cantheybedispleasing toMary?

Moreover,holinessconsistsoftheonethingnecessary:theloveofGodinone'sheart,manifestedin theattempttocarryoutHiswill.

Itseemsincongrousthatthosewhofaithfullyfollow God'slawandtheordinancesofGod'sChurchwould bedescribedasdispleasingtotheMotherofGod.

ModernCatholicscripturescholars,workingwith thepermissionandencouragementoftheofficial "magisterium,"teachthatGodisnotwonttogive prophecyinScripturewithfulldetailsoftimeand place.

SocietyForPropagationOfFaith

IsDistinctFromMissionSunday

Itisremarkablehowlongittakestodebunkanationalerrorormistake.Every mediumofpropagandacanbeused,yetthe mistakestillpersists.Thisisexactlythecase withPropagationoftheFaithandMission Sunday.

Alargepercentageof peoplethinktheyareidentical.Thisconfusioncould arisebecauseoftentimes theyarespokenofsolooselyastoimplytheyarethe same.

PropagationoftheFaith, ascommonlyaccepted, isa societyestablishedtohelp theMissions, whereasMissionSundayisanobservancepromulgatedbythe latePopePiusXIinorder torecalltothewhole Churchtheimportanceof theMissions.Theonlything whichiscommontoboth,is thefactthattheyareboth forMissionassistance.

Thiswascommencedasa privatesocietybyayoung girl,PaulineJaricotinthe cityofLyonsin1829.She establisheditbecauseshe wantedtoassistthemissionaries,andatthattime itwasnotdeemedprudent forwomen,evenreligious women,togotothemissions towork.

SoPaulineJaricotestablished.hersocietyamongst thefriendswhovisitedher parents'homeforweekly relaxationatcards.

Duringthelifetimeofthe foundress,thesocietyhad spreadthroughthewhole world.Bishopswereeither establishingit,ordrawing fromit.

Itisinterestingnowto readthepleasofArchbishopPolding,Gouldand VaughanforhelptoestablishtheChurchinAustralia. Ittookalongtimebefore Australiastartedtorepay.

Probablythebasisofthe confusionaboutPropagationoftheFaithandMissionSundayarisesfromthe factthatPopePiusXIin 1922transferredtheheadquartersofthePropagation SocietyfromLyonsto Rome.

Whereasithadhitherto beenaprivatesociety,it thenbecametheinstrument oftheHolyFather.The SecretaryoftheMission CongregationinRome(SacredCongregationofPropaganda)becameexofficio thePresident.

InadditionPopePiusXI enjoinedtheestablishment

ofthesocietyeverywhere. Heusedmanystrong phrasestodemonstrateits importance.

ThePapalinstructionsregardingMissionSunday makeitclearthateveryone isobligedtodosomething. Thepastorisaskedtoencouragehispeopletopray andtobegeneroustothe Missions, alsoheistogive themanopportuniytomake anofferingtotheMissions; thepeopleareaskedtocooperateintheirresponseto suchexhortations.

Thereforetherecanbe noroomfordoubtsorhesitation.Surelyitisperfectly clear:

MissionSundayandSocietyofPropagationare distinctanddifferent waystohelptheMissions.

BothMissionSundayand PropagationoftheFaith havebeensetupbythe SupremePontiffs.
