Thisparticularcollection ofstoriesdiffersfromits predecessorsonlyinthe factthatitisnotconfined tooneparticularexpedition.

Itis,infact,asymposium ofhisencounterswithanimals(includingthehuman animal)invariouspartsof theworld.

Thebookwastheresult ofaseriesoftalksgivenby Mr.DurrellovertheB.B.C., whichhavebeensyndicated allovertheworld,and someofwhichlistenersmay wellhaveheardherein WesternAustralia.

Incidentally,hemakesan excellentbroadcaster,and heandhiswifehaveappearedinanumberoffeaturesontelevision.

Speakingofhiswife,I shouldimaginethatMr. Durrellmusthavehadto searchverywidelybefore hefoundanyonewillingto

sharehousewithhim,ashe confessestoanalarming numberofadventureswith animalswhichendedby theirbecomingmembersof hishousehold.

Aparticularlycharming andloveableonewasPavlo, themarmoset,butothers seemtohavebeenless friendly,andcertainlyless domesticated.

Quiteapartfromitsattractionforadults,Iwould imaginethatthisbook wouldappealtoteenagers, whohavesomeslightinterestintheworldof nature.

Itishumorous,andrevealsaloveofanimals whichwouldobviouslybea necessaryqualificationfor Mr.Durrell'soccupation.

THEBATTLINGO'REILLY'S

(FatherMartinhadtakentheO'Reillyfamily outforapicnic,theysawababykangarooforthe firsttimeandwerehavingawish), JudywastoosensibletoaskJimwhathiswishwas, sincesheknewthatifonetoldawishitwassupposed nottobegranted.

However,Iwonderifourreaderscanguesswhatit wasJimwishedfor?Wasitapresentforhimself,or anotherlovelytreatlikethepicnicNo,itwassomethingmuchmoreimportantthanthis,somethingthe familyreallyneeded.Itwasthattheirfatherwould findajob.

WhentheyallreachedMarilupagainandtheirown home,theythankedFatherMartinverymuchforthe wonderfulday.Hepattedalltheyoungerchildren's faces,andshookhandswiththeirparents,Maryand thetwins,andthenhesaid:

"Iamveryproudofallofyou,andIwishmore familiesinmyparishhadasmuchfaithandcharity asyoudo."

Mrs.O'Reillysmiledandsaid:"Sure,Fatheryou'll bemakinguscommitthesinofprideifyousaysuch complimentarythingsaboutus!"

Mr.O'Reillydidn'tsayanything,butthelookof happinessonhisfaceexpressedmorethanwords.

Laterthateveningtherewasaknockatthedoor andMissRoseFlanagan,theirCommunistnext-door neighbourcamein.Shetoldthemthatshehadasked alotofthepeopleattheTradesHalliftheyknewof anywork,andshehadbeengiventheaddressofa firmwhichrequiredanightwatchman.

Noparticularskillwasneeded,themostimportant thingbeingthattheapplicantshouldhavetestimonials astohisgoodcharacter.

InspiteofgreatdifficultieswhichtheSocietyhas hadtoovercome,chieflyon theeconomicplane,ithas developedandproveditself capableofagreatcontributiontoculturallife.Allthe memberssensethatsomethingextrasustainsthem andpervadestheir activities,extratothesumtotaloftheirownpersonalities,andtheyareconfidentthatthisforcecomes fromgrace. InopeningtheConfer-thechildrenofmigrants. enceArchbishopBeovichAsaresultofthegreat warmlypraisedthezealous workbothoftheCatholic religiousteachersandofthe laycatechists.

WelcomingtheSistersand Brothers,theArchbishop saidthattheirteaching vocationwasahighone, fortheproperandimmediatepurposeofeducation wastheformationofthe perfect Christian.The foundationofeducation wasreligiousknowledge, forGodmadeustoknow, loveandserveHiminthis worldinordertobehappy withHimforeverinHeaven.

Intheteachingofreligionthereweretwoextremes:thefirstwastreatingChristianDoctrineasan ordinarysubject;thesecond wasinculcatingpietywith littleornodoctrine.

Itwastruethatthelove ofGodhadtobefostered inthechildandhadtoaccompanyallinstruction,but knowledgeofGod'steachinghadalsotobeacquiredthroughthecatechism, intelligentlytaughtandcorrelatedwiththelifeofOur Lord.

Thusachildcomingfrom schoolshouldhavegreat devotiontoOurLord,with anawarenessofHimanda considerableknowledgeof Hislifeandpersonality. Thechildshouldalsohave aknowledgeofHisteachingsandshouldwantto knowthemmore.

TheArchbishoppointed outtohisaudiencethat theytaughtintwowaysbywhattheywereandby whattheysaid.Bothways wereimportant,butthe firstboremorepermanent fruit.

HisGracepaidatribute tothelayteachers,who weresoapostolicinassistingthereligiousteachersin theCatholicschools.A specialwordofcommendationwasgiventothose workingascatechistsinthe Departmentalschools.Their helpanddevotionmeant muchtothepriestsandto thechildrentheytaught.

TheArchbishopcommendedFr.Mulvihilland thosewhohadhelpedhim inconductingthetraining courseatthebeginningof theyear.

OnthepositionofCatholicschools,theArchbishop referredtothestatistics suppliedbytheschools, whichindicatedthatslightlymorethanone-thirdof thepresentenrolmentswere

increaseitwasregretted thatsomeCatholicchildren, throughnofaultoftheir parents,wouldnotbeable toenteraCatholicschool. Thequestionthenaroseas towhetherpriorityshould begiventotheyoungeror totheolderchildren.

TheArchbishopissueda directivefortheArchdioceseofAdelaide:"Wemust trynottorefuseadmission tothelittleonescommencingschool."

KangarooIsland,withits recordoftwochurchesand apresbyteryinfiveyears, isnowplanningforaconventand"theSisters."

Thiswasannouncedat theinauguralmeetingof theKingscoteMen'sCommittee.

Themeetingwasopened byFr.Sutherland,whoexplainedthepurposeof formingaMen'sCommittee.

Withthecompletionof thetwochurchesonthe Islandthereremainedyet onegreatgoaltoachieve namely,theestablishment ofaconventtoservethe growingneedsoftheparish.

Thisblessingwouldbecomearealityinavery shorttimeifthemenwere preparedtoconcentrate theirresourcesinacombinedefforttoraisethe necessaryfunds.

ACatholicwasthoughtof byoutsidersas"onewho goestoMass."Thecentre ofourreligionwas"this isthebloodofthecovenant."

Firstlyweneededtoappreciatebetterourown treasure.Secondlyourunofficialdevotionshouldbe drawnnearertothesource ofGod'srevelation. Onewouldnotwantto disturbpeoplewhohadenjoyedacertainprayerbook alltheirlives.Yetprayersgrewstaleandtheworse theywerethestalerthey grew.

Ifonecomparedthe wordsoftheMagnificat withcertainofourhymns onecouldseehowmuch betterarttheBiblewas. WeshouldbesympathetictoanyBoblemovement withintheChurchandas Catholicswecouldnotescapeourresponsibilityto theworld.
