Thelackofrepsonsibility manifesteditselfinthe stateofsemi-illiteracythat existedamongstsomanyof theyouthoftodaywho neverwroteandwhose readingwasconfinedtothe catchlinesofinferiorpublications.Yettheaspiring nationsofAsiasoughtliteracyasakeytoadvancement andachievement.

TheydrovethroughNedlandsandClaremont.admiringallthebeautifulhomes,andontoFremantle. Whenthetwinssawtheshipsthewereextremely interestedandaskedalotofquestionsaboutthem.
AftertheyhadleftFremantletheycametoalot ofwoolshedsandthentheoilrefinery.TheirdestinationwasRockingham.
WhentheyreachedRockinghamtheyallwentto thechangingshedsandputontheirbathers,thatis allexceptMrs.O'Reilly,whosaidshewouldenjoy itmorewatchingthemall,soshesatdownholding thebaby,withEileensittingbesideher.
Theyhadquitealotoffun.Thetwinscouldn't swim,astheylivedalongwayfromthewaterand didn'thavemuchchanceoflearning,buttheysplashed aboutandwhentheirfatherstoodstillwithhislegs aparttheydivedthroughthemandcameupthe otherside,veryproudofthemselves.
AllofthemhadtokeepaneyeonJowhowasvery adventurousandinclinedtowadeoutofhisdepth.
Aftertheyhadfinishedtheirswimtheydried themselvesandalthoughitwasstillearly,everyone decidedthattheyhadagoodappetiteforlunch.
FatherMartinaskedeveryonewhatkindofcool drinktheywouldlike,thenhegavethetwinssome moneyandtheywentofftotheshoptogetthem.
Thepriest'shousekeeperhadmadethemareal spread.Thereweresausagerollsandlittlemeat patties,tomatoes,cucumber,lettuce,hard-boiledeggs, delicioussandwichesmadeofcreamcheesewith chutneyonthem.Andasforthecakes!Allkinds, shapesandsizes.
Itwasawonderfulparty.Everyoneeatandeat untiltheycouldn'tfindroomforanythingmoreat all.ThenFatherMartinandMr.O'Reillysmoked cigarettespeacefully,whiletherestsuckedsome lollies.
Theytidiedupalltheeggshellsandlitterremainingandputthemintoacontainerforthispurpose, andthetwinstooktheemptycooldrinkbottlesback.
Theyhandedthemoneyreceivedforthemtotheir priestbuthesmiledandtoldthemtheycouldkeepit. tohearfromyouagain.YouOnthedrivebacktheywenttheotherwayoutof areacleverboytohaveFremantle,throughManningandApplecross.When learnttorideatwowheelertheyreachedComotheygotoutandhadalookat thenewandunusualchurchrecentlybuiltthere.
