Atableheproduced showedthatbetweenthe 1947and1954censusthe numberofCatholicsinAustraliaroseby491,540,an increasefrom20.7to23per cent.

Anglicansdeclinedfrom 39percent.to37.9percent whiletheMethodistsfailed toarrestthedeclineinpercentagepopulationfrom 11.5to10.9.

TheLutheransincreased by49,287,arisefrom0.3to 1.3percent.

CatholicChurchwassub-AlthoughCatholicismdid stantiallyunder-represent-notdiffersignificantlyfrom ed thebroadsocialpatternin Australiatherewasquitea strongconcentrationof Catholics,upto32percent., intheinnermetropolitan areasofMelbourneand Sydney.

Hefoundthatonly16per cent.ofagroupof300 higherCommonwealthofficersandonly2percent.of agroupof300business executiveshadattended Catholicschools.

Onthebasisofthose figuresitwouldseemthat theCatholicChurchwas under-representedinthe businesscommunity.

Sucha concentration couldsuggestaworkingclassidentificationinthe Catholicpopulationwhich wouldgoagainstthepatternofthecensus.

Colombo,Ceylon,Aug.3.-AplantofosterreligiouseducationworkedoutbyrepresentativesofCeylon'sfourmajorreligious communitieshasledthemilitantAll-Ceylon BuddhistCongresstodropitscampaignfor nationalisationoftheprivateschools.

TheCatholicspokesmanatthemeetingsaidlater thattheCatholicsinCeylonwinofferallpossiblecooperationsothatBuddhistswhoconstitutealmosttwethirdsofthepopulationofthisnationofninemillion peoplecanhavetheirownschools.Theplancallsfor theestablishmentofBuddhistschoolsbytheGovernmentofCeylon.

Abouthalfanhourlater themountedpolicearrived.

Afterhandingbackgold, silver,broochesandeverythingelseincludingAmy's bracelet,thepolicesergeant toldthegroupthatthese werethebushrangerswho hadbeenwantedforover twomonths.

Onhandingtherewardof £50inmoneytothequickwittedyoungman,the policedroveoffandthe groupclimbedintothe coach,whichrumbledoffin thedirectionofAshwood Grote.

Atlasttheyhaddone withmockery,strippingHim ofthescarletcloak,theyput HisowngarmentsonHim, andledHimawaytobe crucified.
