Thereareanumberof bookswhichcoverthehistoryofAustraliainreadable form-oneIcoveredafew weeksagowasFatherMurtagh's"Australia-the CatholicChapter."

Therearealsoanumber ofbookswhichdealvery eruditelywiththeeconomic historyofthecountry,but theseareusuallywritten fortheeconomicsstudent, andusetechnicaltermsin suchawayastomaketheir readingaconsiderableeffort.

Thebeautyofthisbook ofColinClark'sisitsdirect simplicity, a simplicity whichonlyafirstclass economistcouldachieve, becausehedoesnothaveto concernhimselfwiththe humbugofpretentiousness.

Hewasbornthesonof Australianparents,but broughtupinEngland.He returnedtoAustraliain 1937andwasfor14years EconomicAdvisertothe QueenslandGovernment.

AfteranumberofdisagreementswiththeGovernmentsheserved,in whichhisadvicewasdiscarded,hefinallyresigned andsetupasaprivatebusinessconsultant,but-imediatelyreceivedanattractiveoffertotakeupanappointmentasDirectorofthe InstituteofAgricultural EconomicattheUniversity ofOxford,andhehasbeen thereeversince.

Itwouldbeunfairtoattempttoexpoundinashort reviewlikethistheargumentswhichColinClark bringsforwardtoprovethe thesisIquotedatthebeginningbecauseIwouldrun theriskofdoingitlessthan justice.

Iwillcontentmyselfwith sayingthathedemonstrates howthepredilectionofthe Irishmigrantsforapolicy ofprotectionismledAustraliaintoaneconomic coursewhichhasproved, andisproving,disastrous foritsdevelopmentasa nation.

ThisbookIwouldrate asoneofthemostvaluable bitsofwritingonAustralia

isnotonlyinitscontents, butinthesimplicityofits presentation,whichplaces itinthecategoryofbooks onecouldrecommendto anyonewithabasiceducation.

AnyAustralianinterested inknowingwhatheisvotingforandwherehiscountryisheadingwouldbea foolnottoreadit,andit wouldmakeanexcellent subsidiarytextforchildren doingLeavingEconomics.

Predicateduponprinciples ofsoundphilosophyand moralityastheyare,the precautionswhichHisHolinesswarnedwerenecessary, willnotonlycontribute significantlytothegeneral acceptanceandprestigeof thefieldofpsychiatrybut willalsoinsurethemental, moralandreligiouswellbeingofpatients.

AnxietyAndValues

Wemusthelpthese peoplenotonlyinthenegativesenseofcontrolling theiranxieties,butinthe positivesenseofpreventing abnormalanxietyreactions.

Wemusthelptheindividualattainvigorous mentalhealth.Forthiswe neednotonlyapsychiatric andapsychologicalapproachtotheproblem;we need,aboveall,areligious approach.

Theunderstandingofanxiety,therefore,cannotbe separatedfromtheproblem ofvalues,forinthevalues whichtheindividuallives byisthekeyforthetreatmentofhisanxiety.

Whatparticularevents orstresseswillconstitutea threattoapersondepends onwhatparticularvalues heconsidersimportantto hisexistence,statusorprestigeasanindividual.

Foranygivenindividual thesemayhingeupon

health,wealth,economic andsocialprestigeorwhateverelsehebelievesis worthwhileinlife.

Whatofthevalueswhich manypeopletodayareoverlookingorhaveallowedto growdim,andwhich, nevertheless,areessential totheirexistenceaspersonalities?

Whatofthemanyvalues whichmustbethreatened orlostinthecontemporary crisesofmodernlife?We knowthatthesevalues transcendallothervalues andcanberealisedwhen allothervaluesfail.

Theyaretheeternal valueswhichflowfromthe factofGod'sloveandour eternalsalvation. Itistowardstheattainmentofthesethatwemust directmeninorderthat theymaybebetterpersons notonlyreligiouslybut psychologicallyaswell. "SeekyefirsttheKingdom ofHeaven."

Muchoftheanxietyof ourtimeisduetothecircumstancethatpeople,by beingsolicitousaboutthe wrongthings,inanimmaturitywhichisatonce psychologicalandreligious, haveidentifiedtheirhappinesswiththewrongvalues.

"Laynotuptoyourselves treasuresonearth,where therustandmothconsume andwherethievesbreak throughandsteal;butlay uptoyourselvestreasures inheaven,whereneither therustnormothdothconsume,andwherethieves donotbreakthroughnor steal.Forwherethytreasureis,thereisthyheart also."

CourageAndFaith

Itisthroughareorientationonthelastingandeternalvaluesthatmankind canobtaininsightandfind wisdomtomeettheanxietiesthatmustcomeintoour everydaylives.

Suchanorientationenablesamantomeetanxiety, notinanegative,neurotic manner,butwithcourage andconfidence.

Itisthroughcourageand striving,rather than throughevasionsandwithdrawalsinmeetingthedayto-dayanxietiesasthey arise,thatwecanprevent normalanxietyfrombecomingpathological.

Yettheproblemsand anxietiescannotbemetin apositiveandconstructive wayunlesscourageandfortitudebecoupledwithfaith intheprotectingprovidence ofGod.

Thepersonwhoachieves acceptanceofrealvalues andattackshisproblemsin thelightofthisacceptance has,generallyspeaking, banishedmentalanguish andisreturningtohealth.

Hediscovershisplacein

lifeandrealisesthathehas aworktodo.Theshillyshalyofanxietygivesway totheexpansionofthe creativeforceofastable personality.

Themeaningoflifeitself becomesclarified,andthe scienceofpsychiatry,under God,hasachievedavictory.

For,whatevermayhave beenallegedinthepastto bethechiefpsychological factorinthedevelopment ofmentalproblems,there isagrowingconsensustodaythatitisananxiety concerningthemeaningof life.

Inshort,wemustrecognisetherelationshipbetweenmentalillnessand one'sphilosophyoflife,and allpsychiatrictreatment musttakeintoaccountasa basicconsiderationthephilosophyoflifeinthelight oftruth.

Contingentuponacceptanceofthetruemeaningof lifeisthesettingofgoals, inordertoavoidmental conflicts.

Idonotspeaknowofthe greatgoaloflife,unionwith ourHeavenlyFather,for recognitionofthisisinseparablefromknowledgeof thetruemeaningoflife.

IdealsOfSelf

Iamthinkingofthe minorgoalsofeveryday living,goalswhichshould beinaccordwiththegreat goaloflife,butwhoseimportancecanbelostsight ofjustbecausesooftenthey seemtobesoinsignificant. Buttheyareneverinsignificant.

Happinessandpeaceof mindandsoularefoundin thepossessionofdefinite purpose.

Wholesomeinterestsdeveloprealisticgoals,andin reachingforthemthepersonalitymaturesandfinds truehappinessinco-operatingwithhisneighbourin dailywork,inserviceto others,incharityandlove.

Psychiatristsandpsychologistsremindusconstantly oftheimportanceofgoals. TheChurchknowsthatno goalisultimatelyrealistic unlessinitthereisplacefor God.

Psychiatristsspeakof whattheycallaninternal goalofactualisationinthe personality,theidealtowardswhichthepersonalitytends,andtheycallthis theEgo-idealortheSelfideal.

Thisidealisthegoal,or patternofrealisation,which everypersonsetsforhimself,theytellus,theconcreteimageofwhatheproposestomakeofhimself.

Itisthegoalofevery person'sstriving and, whetherdistortedornot, whetherarticulatedornot, somedegreeofknowledge existsineverypersonshowAVON

Vienna,August1:AWestGermandelegatetothe Communist-sponsoredseventhWorldYouthFestival herepredictedthat"headswillrollwhenthisisover."

Thisviewprettywellsummedupfeelingsofmany observersatthisSovietpropagandadrivetocapture themindsofyoungleadersinAfrica,AsiaandLatin America.

The10-dayfestialopenedonJuly25withaparade of15,000participantsintoVienna'sstadium.The festivalhasrunintoconsiderabletroubleandnever succeededingettingofftheground.

The10-dayfesthialopenedonJuly25withaparade of15,000participantsintoVienna'sstadium.The festivalhasrunintoconsiderabletroubleandnever succeededingettingofftheground.
