Thebeautyofthisbook ofColinClark'sisitsdirect simplicity, a simplicity whichonlyafirstclass economistcouldachieve, becausehedoesnothaveto concernhimselfwiththe humbugofpretentiousness.

Itwouldbeunfairtoattempttoexpoundinashort reviewlikethistheargumentswhichColinClark bringsforwardtoprovethe thesisIquotedatthebeginningbecauseIwouldrun theriskofdoingitlessthan justice.
Iwillcontentmyselfwith sayingthathedemonstrates howthepredilectionofthe Irishmigrantsforapolicy ofprotectionismledAustraliaintoaneconomic coursewhichhasproved, andisproving, disastrous foritsdevelopmentasa nation.
ThisbookIwouldrate asoneofthemostvaluable bitsofwritingonAustralia

GrowthOfThe DoctrinesOver 2,000Years
Interested,Newcastle:The AnglicanBishopHousdenof Newcastlerecentlystated, asreportedinthe"NewcastleMorningHerald,"that theRomanCatholicChurch hadaddedtothefaithonce deliveredtothesaints. Is thistrueinanysense?
R.:No.Fortheonly sensetheBishop'swords canhaveisthattheCatholicChurchhasdeclaredto bepartofthefaithoncedeliveredtothesaintswhat wasnotpartofthatfaith atall.
Inotherwords, thatthe CatholicChurchhasofficiallydeclaredcertaindoctrinestobecontainedinthe divinerevelationgivento mandkindbyChristandthe Apostleswhicharenotcontainedinthatdivinerevelation, butareinventionsof herown.
Thereisnotruthwhateverinsuchacharge.WithintheCatholicChurch,duringher2000yearsofhistory,therehasbeen,of course, growthinunderstandingofthesignificance oftheoriginalbodyofapostolicdoctrine;anditwould bestrangeindeedifdeeper perceptionsofthatsignficancedidnotresultfrom allthestudyandreflection devotedtothesubjectby saintsandscholarsthrough alltheages.
Buttheprocesswasever underthesupervisionof theChurch.Itishumanto err;buttheauthoritative voiceoftheChurchdrew thelinebetweentruthand heresy.
Shehasneverproclaimed asanarticleoffaithwhat wasnotinfactcontainedin theoriginaldepositofrevealedtruth, andshehas nottoleratedanyteachings inhernamewhichwere opposedtoit.
Apartfromthisquestion ofthefaithoncedelivered tothesaints,therehave been,ofcourse,immense developmentsfromthe practicalpointofview, whetherinmattersofdiscipline,orofofficialliturgicalworship,orofpopularformsofpiety.
Butnoneofthesehas beenpermittedbytheCatholicChurchtoaddtoor departfromthefaithonce deliveredtothesaints whetherasregardsits principlesoritsspirit.

BiblicalReferencesToThe
ImmaculateConceptionOfMary Catholic,NorthSydney:IsthereanyreferenceintheBibletoMary'simmaculate conception?
R.:Thereisnoneedto quoteanyexpressreference intheBibleinsupportof thedoctrine,sincethe Biblealoneisnotthecompleteruleoffaith.
A"Bible-only"religionis boundtobeinadequate. However,althoughnotexpresslysayingthatMary wasimmaculate,being neitherconceivednorborn withthestainoforiginal sinuponhersoul.
Thefactthatshewasthe womanpromisedinGenesiswhowouldbethesecond Evetoundotheworkofthe firstEve,andthat,inthe annunciation,theangel salutedheras"fullof grace,"affordsufficient groundsintheBible,with theadditionallightthrown onthesubjectbyChristian tradition,towarrantthe definedteachingofthe CatholicChurchthatMary wasindeedeverimmaculate.
Initsownright,of course,thedivineauthority oftheCatholicChurchsuffiicientlyguaranteeseach ofherdefinedArticlesof Faith.
Q.:Thisfriendssaysthere isapassageinScripture whichdeclaresthatChrist istheonlysinlessone.
R.:ThereisnotextsayingthatHe"only"or "alone"wasthesinlessone. Scripturedoessay,however,twothingsfromwhich onecouldarriveatthat conclusion.
Firstly,thatinChrist therewasnosin;secondly, thatinAdamallhavesinned.All,therefore,needed redemptionexceptChrist theRedeemer.
That,however,doesnot excludetheCatholicdoctrineofMary'simmaculate conception.Foritwasin virtueoftheredemptive workofChristthatshewas preservedfromthatoriginalsinshewouldotherwise
haveinheritedfromAdam. Bymeansofthis"redemptionbyprevention" Christkeptimmaculatethe BlessedVirginMary, who wasthehumansourceof Hisownimmaculateand sinlesshumannature.
Q.:Towhatextentare quotationsfromtheOld Testamentbindingon Christians?
R.:Muchwoulddepend onthetextquoted.All Christians,ofcourse,if theyaretrulysuch,admit thatthewholeoftheOld Testamentistheinspired WordofGod.
Butnoteverythinginit isapplicabletoourselvesin practice, asinthecaseof liturgicalanddisciplinary lawsfortheJews. We mustrememberthatChrist institutedtheNewCovenant, abrogatingtheOld Covenant.
Also,manydoctrinesof theOldTestamentneed supplementingandinterpretinginthelightofthe NewTestament.
Itremainstrue,however, asSt.Paulwroteonseveral occasions,thatallScripture, eventheOldTestament, waswrittenforourinstructionandisusefultous. Wecanbenefitfromthe history,teachings,prophecies,examplesandprayers recordedinitspages.But theceremoniallawsand disciplinarypreceptsofthe OldDispensationforthe JewsdonotobligeChristians.
As,forexample,thesacrificialTempleworship,the riteofcircumcision,theobservanceofsabbaths,and othersuchmatters.
Iftextsarequotedfrom theOldTestamentconcerningthesethings,wedonot denythattheyaretheinspiredWordofGod,but saysimplythattheyappliedtotheJewsinOld Testamenttimes,butdonot applytousnow.
