HongKong.-Thecommunistpressin RedChinahasapparentlygivenupitsformerpracticeofgivingwidepublicitytothe so-calledPatrioticAssociationofChinese Catholics.
ReportsreceivedherestatethattheChineseReds aredisappointedbecausetheassociationisnothaving thesuccesstheyhadhopedfor.
ItwaslearnedthatstudentsinShanghaiand CatholicyouthingeneralweresubjectedtofiveindoctrinationcoursesfromJuly,1957,toFebruary, 1959.
Althoughitisnotknownwhetherthesecourses arestillgoingonfortheso-calledCatholicSocialist YouthorganisationofShanghai,informationreceived herestatedthattheorganisationhaddroppedthe word"patriotic"fromitstitle.
InformedCatholicsheresaidthatChinesetourist agencieswhichformerlyurgedtravellerstovisit churchesinRedChinaarenowmakingdetoursso thattravellerswillavoidthechurches.
Itwaslearnedthatatarecentindoctrination courseanumberofyoungCatholicshadthecourage tomakean"expose"ofthestateofChristianityin RedChina.
Theywerereportedtohavereceivedareplyfrom Redauthoritieswhichstatedinpart:"Ifyousay thatpriestsandReligiousarelessnumerousitmust benotedthatthisstateofaffairswascreatedbythe Churchherself.
"Becausetheywerereactionarysomewerearrested. ThiswasnecessarytopurifytheChurch.Butit wouldbewrongtoconcludethattherehasbeena persecution."
CatholicsherehavestatedthatchurchesinRed Chinaareemptytothreereasons:(1)Catholicswho wereindoctrinatedandyieldednolongerfeelthey needtoprayandgotochurch;(2)otherCatholics donotwishtogotoachurchthatisundera "patrioticpriest,"and(3)stillotherCatholicshave beendeportedtofrontierprovinces.

WhoAreTheRealEscapists?
WhenChristiansfirstshowedupinthe streetsofRome,paganscalledthematheists fortheydidn'tfitintoarottensociety;they wouldnotgloryintheblood-bathsofthe amphitheatreordeifytheEmperor.
Today'sChristians-atleastthosewhoacknowledgethesamespiritualleaderastheearlymartyrsarecalledescapistsforfailingtofaceupto"the realitiesoflife."
Themodernspointsthefingeratyoungmenand women(thecreamoftheChristians)fleeinginto seminariesorconvents.EventhemoreworldlyChristians,theyobserve,arelookingforwardtoanother life.
"Whydon'ttheycomedowntoearthandhelp usbuildamoresecureandplentifulworld?"isthe modernpagans'complaint.
Ofcourse,itwouldbefoolishtohidethefactthat theChurchdoesencouragevocations;yetnotbecause shedislikesmarriage-shemerelylikesvirginity more.
NorisanyonegoingtodenythatChristianitydoes teachitsfollowerstodespisetheworldinsofaras itmustbeputinitsrightproportion;thatthings reallybegintohappenwhenwehave"shaffledofthis mortalcoil."
InthisglorioussenseChristiansareescapists;for Christiansarepeoplewhobelievenotonlythattwo worldsarebetterthanone,butthatoneisinsignificantbycomparison.
Allthismoderntalkaboutescapismhingesaround thequestion:isourpresentlifechieflyimportantin relationtosomeotherlifeinwhichourhumanityis perfectedandreceivesimmortality,orisitnot?If not,thentheChristianswhobotheraboutfasting, sacrificesandrestraintareindeedfools.
Butifontheotherhandreasontellsusthatthe ideaofimmortality,is,atleast,probable-thenitis escapismnottotakethatideaintoaccount.Surely, inamatterofsuchimportancethereasonablething istoinvestigate;anyonecanreadaboutChristand hisshockingclaimtobeGod,andfindoutforhimself ifChristprovedhisclaimorturnedouttobeamadmanorworse.
AndifChrist'srevelationdoesmaketheideaof immortalitycertain,thentheonlysanecourseisto behaveinaccordancewiththiscertitude.
TodenyChrstahearingandtodismissChristianity asamythandtoconcentratesolelyonahere-andnowexistence-isn'tthisescapismwithabang?Aren't ChristandtheChurchhesetup"realitiesoflife"to bereckonedwith?
Letusbeclearaboutourownposition.Christians -whoarewillingtoacceptChristandreceivethe lifeonlyhecangive-areintheworldbutcertainly notofit.
