HongKong.-Thecommunistpressin RedChinahasapparentlygivenupitsformerpracticeofgivingwidepublicitytothe so-calledPatrioticAssociationofChinese Catholics.

ReportsreceivedherestatethattheChineseReds aredisappointedbecausetheassociationisnothaving thesuccesstheyhadhopedfor.

ItwaslearnedthatstudentsinShanghaiand CatholicyouthingeneralweresubjectedtofiveindoctrinationcoursesfromJuly,1957,toFebruary, 1959.

Althoughitisnotknownwhetherthesecourses arestillgoingonfortheso-calledCatholicSocialist YouthorganisationofShanghai,informationreceived herestatedthattheorganisationhaddroppedthe word"patriotic"fromitstitle.

InformedCatholicsheresaidthatChinesetourist agencieswhichformerlyurgedtravellerstovisit churchesinRedChinaarenowmakingdetoursso thattravellerswillavoidthechurches.

Itwaslearnedthatatarecentindoctrination courseanumberofyoungCatholicshadthecourage tomakean"expose"ofthestateofChristianityin RedChina.

Theywerereportedtohavereceivedareplyfrom Redauthoritieswhichstatedinpart:"Ifyousay thatpriestsandReligiousarelessnumerousitmust benotedthatthisstateofaffairswascreatedbythe Churchherself.

"Becausetheywerereactionarysomewerearrested. ThiswasnecessarytopurifytheChurch.Butit wouldbewrongtoconcludethattherehasbeena persecution."

CatholicsherehavestatedthatchurchesinRed Chinaareemptytothreereasons:(1)Catholicswho wereindoctrinatedandyieldednolongerfeelthey needtoprayandgotochurch;(2)otherCatholics donotwishtogotoachurchthatisundera "patrioticpriest,"and(3)stillotherCatholicshave beendeportedtofrontierprovinces.

Fulda,Germany.-Thepressaffects notonlythebasisofculturalandeconomiclife,"butalsothemostfundamentalquestionsoflifeitself,questionsof theChristianorderoflifeandofthe world,andofitsrealisationinour times,"thenewBishopofFuldadeclaredhere.

InhisfirstgreetingtotheCatholicsofFulda astheirOrdinary,BishopAdolfBoltestressed "howfrighteninglyvoluminousshamelessliteraturehasbecome,withgreatsalessuccess,and penetratingeventheworldofchildren."

BishopBoltesaidthatmodernlifeissuch thatthepressingeneralandjournalistsinparticularhaveaseriousdutytoservetrutheverywhere,promotingvirtueandallthatisgood.

WhoAreTheRealEscapists?

WhenChristiansfirstshowedupinthe streetsofRome,paganscalledthematheists fortheydidn'tfitintoarottensociety;they wouldnotgloryintheblood-bathsofthe amphitheatreordeifytheEmperor.

Today'sChristians-atleastthosewhoacknowledgethesamespiritualleaderastheearlymartyrsarecalledescapistsforfailingtofaceupto"the realitiesoflife."

Themodernspointsthefingeratyoungmenand women(thecreamoftheChristians)fleeinginto seminariesorconvents.EventhemoreworldlyChristians,theyobserve,arelookingforwardtoanother life.

"Whydon'ttheycomedowntoearthandhelp usbuildamoresecureandplentifulworld?"isthe modernpagans'complaint.

Ofcourse,itwouldbefoolishtohidethefactthat theChurchdoesencouragevocations;yetnotbecause shedislikesmarriage-shemerelylikesvirginity more.

NorisanyonegoingtodenythatChristianitydoes teachitsfollowerstodespisetheworldinsofaras itmustbeputinitsrightproportion;thatthings reallybegintohappenwhenwehave"shaffledofthis mortalcoil."

InthisglorioussenseChristiansareescapists;for Christiansarepeoplewhobelievenotonlythattwo worldsarebetterthanone,butthatoneisinsignificantbycomparison.

Allthismoderntalkaboutescapismhingesaround thequestion:isourpresentlifechieflyimportantin relationtosomeotherlifeinwhichourhumanityis perfectedandreceivesimmortality,orisitnot?If not,thentheChristianswhobotheraboutfasting, sacrificesandrestraintareindeedfools.

Butifontheotherhandreasontellsusthatthe ideaofimmortality,is,atleast,probable-thenitis escapismnottotakethatideaintoaccount.Surely, inamatterofsuchimportancethereasonablething istoinvestigate;anyonecanreadaboutChristand hisshockingclaimtobeGod,andfindoutforhimself ifChristprovedhisclaimorturnedouttobeamadmanorworse.

AndifChrist'srevelationdoesmaketheideaof immortalitycertain,thentheonlysanecourseisto behaveinaccordancewiththiscertitude.

TodenyChrstahearingandtodismissChristianity asamythandtoconcentratesolelyonahere-andnowexistence-isn'tthisescapismwithabang?Aren't ChristandtheChurchhesetup"realitiesoflife"to bereckonedwith?

Letusbeclearaboutourownposition.Christians -whoarewillingtoacceptChristandreceivethe lifeonlyhecangive-areintheworldbutcertainly notofit.

Theydonotpretendtohaveonefootintheenemy's camp:Christwasdecisiveonthispoint,ifonnothing else.AccordingtoChristapersoncannotexpect thebestoutofthisworld-ifbythebestyoumean comfort,pleasureandamilkandwaterChristianity-

TheGovernmentradioinPekingannouncedthe openinginShenyangofan"exhibitiononthedeeds ofMartyrAnYeh-min"-apparentlyasoldierkilled duringthebombardmentoftheNationalist-held islandofQuemoy.

PekingRadiosaid1,500persons-includingparty, Governmentandmilitaryleaders-attendedtheceremonyopeningtheexhibition,whichdepictsAn's childhood,photographsofhimandbookshereadin hisyoungerdays,hisarmydiary,andhis"heroic deeds"duringthebombardment.

"Peoplevisitingtheexhibitionhavebeendeeply movedbyMartyrAn'sdeedsandhaveexpressedtheir determinationtolearnfromhim,tostepupproduction,andtocontributetothesocialistconstructionof thefatherland,"theCommunistradioconcluded.

Yetistheworld,eveninthemostworldlysense, worseoffbecauseChristianstakethisstand,because theydonotpretendtobeshort-sighted?Itmayseem paradoxicalbutthemenwhodidmostforthisworld werepeoplewhohadtheireyesonanother.

VincentdePaul-thepoorman'smillionaireinspiresabout50,000CharitySistersinworksforthe poor.TheDumbOxeofSicily,ThomasAquinas, whomChestertonwelldescribesas"abstracted,even apartfromhisoccasionalandcarefullyconcealed experiencesoftranceorectasy"-the"unpractical type"isstillbellowinghisrealismtodaythroughout Catholicseminariesanduniversities.

Andsoonwithothersaintswhoseworksfaroutshineandoutlasttheworkoftheinfidel.

Eventhenot-so-saintlyChristiansproclaimthis truth.TheGothicchurchesofEuropewerebuiltby menwhoknewthatthingsshouldpointupwardsandtheyproducedsomethingbeautiful.

Themodernartistwithoutfaithproducessomething resemblingtheexcessesofhisunreasonandprideanditisn'tbeautiful.Yetthereisnoneedtolook abroadtoseeevidenceofthistruth;it'srightatour ownbackdoor.

ThroughoutAustraliaChristiansarespecklingthe landwithfinebuildingsforalltoadmireifnot topraiseGodfor.Inthemtheyoungareeducated, oldfolkarebeingcaredforandorphansaregiven ahome.

Moreover,Christiansareshowingthatthey-and theyalone-arereallyinterestedinthefateofJones theordinaryman;theydonotlookdownonhimas thebigbusinessmandoes;nordotheydirecthimto aparidiseonearth.

Thegreedycapitalistissimplynotinterestedinhis fatewhiletheCommunistdoesnotknowwhatJones wantsorneeds.

TheChristiansociologistalonecanfindhisway throughtheirextremes.Andinthistaskheisurged onbytheexampleofthepriestsandreligiouswho havefreelyrenouncedtheirrightstoahomeandwho arehelpinghimbuildthehomeofJones.

Keta,Ghana.-Some1,300layleadersof theKetadiocesehavecalledontheGhana governmenttoreturntoCatholicmanagementthemissionschoolsintheTogoland regiontakenoverlastSeptemberbythe MinistryofEducation.

Oneofthemostexciting andtragicincidentsinmy lifehappenedtomewhenI was16yearsofageand stayingwithmygrandmother.

Flameswereflickeringout ofbrokenwindowsanddevouringwoodworklikea smillchildeatinganicecream.

WelivedinFormosa,a smallislandoffthecoastof China.Irememberthedate verywell,itwasJune27. Manyotherswillremember thisdatetoo,forliveswere lostthatnight.

Grandma'shouseistwo milesfromthetownship, anditwasonalargehill andisolatedfromother housesbecauseoftheforest aroundus.

Thisnightweweresittingdowntoteawhensuddenlytherewasagreat rumblingandtheearth beneathusshookwithsuch tremendousforcethatallof grandma'schinashattered intosmallpieces.

Weranoutsideontothe terraceandlookedtowards thecity.

SeamusO'ReillycarriedEileenonhisshoulders, pick-a-back.KevincarriedthebabyJohninhis arms.Theywerealltiredandhappy.Whenthey gothometheysuddenlyrealisedthattheyhadnot saidtheFamilyRosary.
