Owingtoill-healthand advancingyears,Abbot Catalanresignedhisoffice inMay,1951.AbbotGregoryGomezwaselected tofillhisplace.

AbbotCatalanwhowas subsequentlynamedTitularAbbotNulliusofSt. AemilianusdeCuculla, Spain,continuedtoliveat theNewNorciaAbbey afterretirement.

HewasthethirdAbbot ofNewNorciawhenhe succeededBishopTorres in1915.

Besidesbeingthesuperiorofamonasticcommunityof52members,hewasalsoOrdinaryofa dioceseof30,000squaremiles,withnineparishesand aCatholicpopulationof2,150souls.

Itcomprisesrichred loamandisinalovelysettingofundulated,wooded hills.

TheNorbertineFathers, whoarrivedfromIreland onMay12,wereformally inductedtotheparishof YorkonMay15byHis GracetheArchbishop.

"Inconsequencesomeofthecommuneshavebeen dissolved,othersareretainedinnameonly,whileyet othershavebeenmodified,withtheclosureofcommunalmess-halls,nurseriesandhomesfortheaged. PeasantshavestormedStategranaries,attackedfood convoysandkilledoffpartyofficials.Whatliesbehind allthisdiscontent,ofcourse,islesshungerandinjusticethantheoutragetothenaturalandimmemorial institutionofthefamily.Afterall,theChinesehave sufferedhungerandinjusticesolongthattheymust beimmunetoit.Thephenomenonofrevoltcallsfor anadditionalfactorasanexplanation.

Familylifeisattheveryheartofthetraditional organisationofChineselife,evenmorepronouncedly thanintheWesternnations.Thevenerationofparents extendedfarbeyondtherelationshipoffathertoson. Itstretchesnotonlytoalllivinggenerationsbuteven tothedead-forancestorworshipisthecoreofChinesereligion.TheCommunistswhohavenounderstandingofhumannature(exceptinitschemistry andbiology)wereexceedinglybrashtotrythe"anthill"experimentinChinaofallplaces.Itwasaventureininhumanitywhichwasboundofitsnatureto fail.Andfailithat.

Thetime,therefore,seemsnotablyinauspiciousto bepluggingtheadvocacyof"recognising'RedChina. ForitisnotnconceivablethattheRedregimecould collapsewiththecommunes.Historytendstoshow thatthereisalimitbeyondwhichpeoplecannot bedrivenandthetermofpatiencecouldeasilybe whentheinstitutionsonwhichtheirphysicallifeand traditionalideasdependisthreatened.Thatcrisishas beguninChinaandnoonecanforseeitsend.But insteadofimplyingthattheFreeChineseshouldbe abandoned,nowisthetimetolendthemtheassistance theyneedtoliberatethemainland.

Attheconclusionofthe mealbranchpresidentcalled onMr.McKeevertoaddress themeeting.Inachoicely wordedspeechhespokeof theobjectsandprivilegesof thesociety,tracingitshistorybacktoitsveryfoundation,anddrawingspecial attentiontothemanyindulgencesgrantedtoits membersinthe700years ofitsexistenceasaspiritual societyofthehighestorder.

Itwasnotthepractiseto haveeveningdevotionsat St.Anthony'sChurchowing tothescatterednatureof theparish,butHolyMass wasalwaysfollowedby BenedictionoftheBlessed Sacrament,andtherecitationofthepledgebythe HolyNamemen. TheBranchwasinauguratedsomefiveorsixyears agoandhasbeenmoreor lessstaticinnumbers throughoutthisperiod. Itsmembershopetoincreasetheirnumberswhen thepopulationinthesurroundingdistrictscommence togrow.Theaverage monthlyattendanceatHoly Communionisinthevicinityoftwo-thirdsofthetotal membership.

THIRD(Red-Controlled)EASTGERMANYAND

THELANDSBEYOND(andthismightturnoutto bethemostcrucialanddeterminingpoint):

ItisnotonlythatthesturdyfreedomofWest BerlingiveshopetoEastBerlin,butitgiveshope alsotoallEastGermany,andtootherslivingnearby undertheCommunistyoke.Thereisnodoubtofthis.
