Themelodieswerecollectedin1958intheChimbu areaoftheNewGuineaHighlands.
Althoughverylittleisknownofnativemusicstructure,theevidenceseemstoindicatethatcadence,not pitch,isthemoreimportantelement.

EastBerlinactuallyhas130,000Catholics,outof 1,100,000inhabitants;35parishesandmanyother placeswhereMassissaid,and66priests.ThissegmentoftheChurchhasbeenunshakeninitsCatholic loyaltyandhasevidencedaremarkablytoughdeterminationnottogiveupitsFaithintheteethofcontinuedandvigorousatheistpropaganda.
Publicreligiousactivityhasbeenmadeimpossible. ExitbyCatholicstoWestGermanytoattendconventionsorretreatsisobstructed.PrelatesfromWest GermanyareforbiddentoentertheRedareato attendecclesiasticalceremoniesortodeliveraddresses.TheCatholicPresshasbeenstifledruthlessly. SECOND(Free)WESTBERLIN:
Thissectorhasbravelyscoredaremarkablesuccessstory,culturally,economicallyandpoliticallyandreligiously-despiteitsdifficultiesofbeingentirelysurroundedbyRed-controlledareas.
Dedicatedtodemocracy,ithasencouragedreligion withfullfreedom,andtheChurchflourishesand makesenergeticprogress.
Butthereisagreementthat,shouldtheWestagree tothespuriousSovietproposalthatBerlinbemadea "freecity,"ringedwithRed-controlledterritoryorotherwiseturnWestBerlinovertothemerciesof theRed-controlledpartofGermany-thenfreedom wouldbechokedoutandtheChurchwouldswiftly bethrottledasithasbeeninEastBerlin.
InWestBerlin,thereare280,000Catholics,74 parishesandatotalof145priests.Thereare96conventsformenandwomen,andtheselattercontain 1,627priests,SistersandBrothers.Catholicschools thriveandincrease.Catholicassociationsarevigorous andgrow.
THIRD(Red-Controlled)EASTGERMANYAND
THELANDSBEYOND(andthismightturnoutto bethemostcrucialanddeterminingpoint):
ItisnotonlythatthesturdyfreedomofWest BerlingiveshopetoEastBerlin,butitgiveshope alsotoallEastGermany,andtootherslivingnearby undertheCommunistyoke.Thereisnodoubtofthis. ThefigureofGermanswhocrossedtheIronCurtain throughWestBerlin,asanescapechannel,standat thistimenear2,000,000.In1958,theescapeesincluded200universityprofessors,2,500collegestudents,3,100teachers,1,200physicians,dentistsand veterinarians.ThroughouttheRed-controlledsurroundingarea,everyoneknowstheroute.Thisgoes notonlyforEastGermany,butalsoforthelands beyondwheretheRedsexercisecontrol.Ifword cametothemthatthechannelwasclosed,therewould bedespair.
EastGermany(Red-controlled),notincludingEast Berlin(similarlycontrolled)isknown,inWestern (Free)parlance,asthe"Zone."Ithas1,763,700 Catholics;somethingnear1,000parishes,missionsand otherplaceswhereMassissaid,and1,257priests.
Theecclesiasticaladministrationofthisareais tremendouslydifficult,chieflybecauseofdislocations underCommunistruleandcalculatedRedharrassment.Fromnearchaosatonetime,anarrangement offour"commissariats"hasbeenevolved,underthe chairmanshipofCardinalDoepfner,sothatthereis ordertotheextentthisisfeasible.
FOURTH:THETHREATTOWESTGERMANY:
Noonedoubtsthat,shouldtheCommunistswina victoryinWestBerlinfromtheFreeWest,they wouldturnatoncetoanattempttoswallowWest Germanyitself,withtheinevitableblightingofthe Churchthere.
