Whilenon-CatholicsalloverN.S.W.andinmany partsofVictoriaandQueenslandwerereadingthis invitation,FatherWhite,NationalDirectorofthe newly-foundedCatholicEnquiryCentre,explained theschemefromthepulpitofSt.Mary'sCathedral, Sydney.Hissermonatthe11o'clockMasswas broadcastoverStation2SM.

Theadvertisementinvitednon-Catholicsofall creedsandofnonetowritetotheCatholicEnquiry Centreforabrochuregivingdetailsofapostalcourse ofweeklylessonsontheCatholicChurch,which wouldbesenttothemfreeandinabsoluteconfidence theywerefurtherinterested.

FIRSTINAUSTRALIA

Thescheme,thefirstofitskindeverattemptedin thiscountry,hasbeenlaunchedbytheCardinal, ArchbishopsandBishopsinanattempttointroduce theteachingsoftheCatholicChurchtomillionsof Australianfamiliesforthefirsttime.

The"Sun-Herald,"inwhichthefirstofthisseries ofadvertisementsappearedisreadbymorethana millionpeopleeachweek.

Br.Walsh,nowonly25 yearsofage,wasafoundationpupiloftheLeederville College.

HeobtainedhismatriculationattheSydneyJuniorateoftheChristianBrothersin1948.

Havingcompletedhis novitiateyear,herepeated thematriculationcourse andsecuredthecoveted LiversidgePrizeforChemistry,whichentitledhimto abursaryattheUniversity ofSydney.

Hebeganasciencecourse in1951,withemphasison chemistry.Inhisthirdyear hemajoredinorganicchemistry.

Forhisexcellentworkin thisyearhereceivedthe WalterBurfittandCaird scholarships.Hethentook anhonourscourseinphysicalchemistry. Hesecuredafirstclass honoursandtheuniversity medal.

In1955heenrolledinthe Ph.D.courseunderProfessoroftheoreticalchemistry inLondon.Thelatterpart ofhisstudieswasdoneunderthetutelageofDr.L. E.Lyons.

whorecentlyreceived ofPhilosophyatthe pastpupilofC.B.C.,

Forthreeandahalfyears heworkedathisthesis,aidedin1956-57byanICIANZ scholarship.

Thisinvolvedthestudyof ultra-violetspectraofbenzene,napthalene,teracene, phthalocyanineandcoroneneatliquidheliumtemperatures.

Coveringthetheoretical aspectsofalltheseonthe Davydortheory,hisexperimentalworkwasconfined tonapthalene.Finally,its polarisedspectrumwasrecordedandanalysed.

MuchofBro.Walsh's workhasbeenpublishedin scientificjournalsandthe

restisinprocessofbeing published.

Thethesis-amonumentalworkofover300pages -upholdsitsclaimtobea studyofelectroniclevelsof aromaticmoleculesand molecularcrystals.

Followingtheprintingof thethesis,Bro.Walshreceivedanofferfromthe UniversityofLondonto joinaresearchschoolsponsoredbytheirsciencedepartment.

Sir,-Thebarereportthattheparents'choice. EnglishCatholicschoolsare toreceivefurthersubstantialfinancialassistancedoes notdojusticetotheunremittingstruggleofthe CatholicChurchinEngland foraidtoschools.

Thepresentphaseofthe strugglecommencedin1942 whentheEnglishGovernmentpublishedaforecastof itseventual1944Education ActasaWhitePaper.

Boththefinancialimpositionsoftheproposalsand thepowerssoughttoclose Catholicschoolsarousedthe

Sincethepassingofthe 1944ActCatholicsatevery electionandopportunity havepressedtheirclaimfor fulljusticeonparliamentarians.TheHierarchyhas beenequallyactivebothdirectlyandindirectly.

TheabilityandlikeablenessofCatholicfeatureson radioandtelevisionhas beenanindirectmethodof carryingconviction.

ArchbishopHeenanwas describedinoneAnglican paperas"havingasteamrollercharm."BishopAnmostvehementoppositiongelusBeck,O.F.M.hasa amongsttheCatholiclaitylongstandingreputationin andledtotheformationofreligiousbroadcasts.He CatholicParentsandElec-hasalsohadamajorpart tors'Associationsinagreat manydioceses.

Thusin1959after15 yearsofsteadyandpacific representation,helpwith buildingcostsofschools hasbeenadvancedfrom50 to75percent.andloans areadvanceableforthe balance.Allteachingcosts intheseschools,asinthe past,continuetobepaidby theGovernment.

ThereisanevidentlessontousinAustraliato adoptthepatternofhighlevelnegotiationtowards fixedobjectiveswithgeneral layelectoralrepresentation ifwearegoingtomakethe continuationofourCatholicschools'systempossible.

Ifsomanyfilmswerenotmorallyobjectionablein wholeorinpart,thenthetype.ofadvertisinginwhich theirexhibitorsindulgeandwhichthesecularPress acceptswithoutremorsewouldtendtomakethemso. TheBill,nowintheHouseofCommons,isexpected tobecomealawbytheendofJuly.Itwouldincrease subsidiesfortheconstructionandrepairofCatholic secondaryschoolswithintheStateeducationsystem from50to75percent.

SincetheBillwasintroducedinParliament,there hasbeenasustainedcampaignagainstitbyasection ofNonconformists-Protestantswhoarenotmembers oftheChurchofEngland.

The"ManchesterGuardian,"whichisNonconformistbytradition,hasbeenexplainingtoopponents oftheBillthatitisnotrightforthemtospeakof "givingpublicmoneytothedenominationalbodies."

Intheeveningsthereare occupations plentyofuseful forthegirls.Theyareemployedoncakedecorating, learningtomakeartificial flowers,practisingfortheir ownconcertorchestra, keepingfitinthegymnasiumandpractisingbasketball.

TwoN.C.G.M.teamscome outeverySaturdaytoplay basketballwiththegirls, whogotintothegrand finalslastyear.Forsummer theyhavetenniscourts.

Thegirlsaretaughtcookinganddressmakingin smallclasses,andaresupervisedbytheSistersand Auxiliariesincleaningand tidyingtheirownbedrooms anddining-rooms.

Throughouttheirliving quartersisahome-likeatmosphere,thedormitories areassmallaspossible, withprettypastelshades, cheerfulcretonnebedcovers, eachgirlhavingherown lockerandpressforher clothes.Theirdiningrooms aremostattractive,with gaytableclothsandvases offlowers.

DailyMassisnotobligatoryonthegirls,though somechoosetogo.They areeagerforspiritualinstruction.TwooftheSisterstakecatechismclasses, andthereisanOurLady oftheGoodShepherdPraesidiumoftheLegionof Mary,the22Legionaries beingAuxiliaries,whofor theirworkteachallotted girlshowtosaytherosary andhelpthemwiththeir catechism.

Besidesthebeautifully turnedoutlaundrywork, fineembroideryandhandmadevestmentsareundertakenbytheAuxiliariesand girlsattheGoodShepherd Convent.Everyyearthey haveasaleofwork;Iwill letyouknowingoodtime inmylettertoreaders whenthenextwilltake place.

Inmanycasestheirfamilieshavemovedtoanother district,andtheyarethus enabledtomakeafresh startinlife,breakingwith unsatisfactoryassociates.

In1929FatherLynch diedsuddenlywhileholidayingoverseasandhewas succeededbytheRev.T. ('Hurley,D.D.
