ThisrecordingbyDecca isverygoodbut,alas,an also-rantotheColumbia versionthathasheldthe fieldaloneandundisputed forthelastsixyearsand whichstilldoes.

TheColumbiasetwas broadcastover6WNsome monthsagoandIhaveno doubtthatmanyreaders stillrememberit;witha castincludingSchwarzkopf, Kunz,GeddaandLooseit isnotlikelytobeeasily forgotten.

Comparedwithit,this Decca theversionlackssparkle; notestellusthatStote, theconductor,hasconductedfivehundredperformancesoftheoperetta;at timesthisversionsounds likethe501st.

Itisalittlehardonthe enchantingHildeGueden, whoissuchaverygand MerryWidow,withalovely speakingvoiceandacting abilitytomatchherbeautifulsinging,toknowfrom thestartthatshecouldn't reachuptoSchwarzkopf.

simplydonotexist;a Swedecouldhardlyhopeto compete,inaVienne,' operetta,withanartistwho isalmostapersonification ofVienna.

EmmyLoosesingsValencienneinbothversionsand thereisnosuchthingasa fairtomiddlingLooseperformance.Kmentt,anew ViennaOperatenor,sings deRosillonwell.

Thealbumwithdescriptivenotesiswell,produced butthesamenumberof pagescouldhavebeenused foralibretto.

Theactionisdescribedat somelengthbutisdifficult tofollow,allthemoreas theorderofeventsatthe beginningofAct3givenby thenotesiswrong.

Thereissomuchspoken German,quiteamusing German,onwhichthedevelopmentoftheplotdepends,thatalibrettowould havegreatlyaddedtothe enjoyment.

Inthiscaseitisdifficult tobeobjectivelyfair.By comparisonwiththeColumbiaset,thisisinferior.If thatmasterpiecedidnot exist,thisversionwouldbe stronglyrecommended.

TCHAIKOWSKY.Symphony, No.6("Pathetique")ChicagoSymphonyOrchestra underFritzReiner.12" RCA,75/6. The"Pathetique"was Tchaikovsky'slatest greatestworkandprobably mostpopularsymphony. Certainlythemarketis floodedwithrivalversions andcompetitionisfierce.

Thisisasolid,workmanlikeperformance.h' fullyrecorded,withallthe richorchestraltoneshining through,butitisfarfrom beingthebestavailable.

FranklyIcannotunderstandwhyithasbeenissued inAustralia;theAustralian RCAcatalogueofclassical musicisasmalloneand thereforewewouldexpect theselectionfromtheir hugeAmericancatalogueto benothingbutthebest.

TheChicagoorchestrais notparticularlyoutstandingnorisFritzReinerone ofthegreatconductorsbut R.C.A.haveagreatorchestraintheBostonanda superbconductorinPierre Monteuxandtheyhaverecordedthissymphony.

Thatrecording,whichI havenotheardandw,p presumablynobodyinAustraliaislikelytohear,has thereputationofbeingone ofthebestevermade. Youmayrememberthat afewweeksagoIreviewed Monteux'srecordingofthe Fifth.Thisisnowhereso

AsforPerGrundenas Danilo,standardsofcomparisonwithErichKunzgoodasthat.

Lastweekourcolumnistwrotewithsomedistaste ofaratherabsurdyoungpersonwho,inanormal societyservedbyarationalandresponsiblePress, wouldhavegoneun-noticedexcept,pmsibly,bymedicaljournals.Whythenhassheexcitedsomuchinterestandcommentwhenpeopleofrealtalentand distinctionarevirtuallyignored?Theanswerisgiven lessbythereflectionthatsocietyisoffbalancethan thatthePressisroundthebend.Thenewspaper baronstellusthattheyaregivingthepublicwhatit wants.Itisconceivablethatthedayisathandwhen along-sufferingpublicmaygivethePresswhatIt deserves-whichisobloquyandoblivion.

Itisamatterofgravitythatsuchwantonwaste ofspaceandunsolicitedsufferingbythepubliccall beengagedinwhenthenationisbattlingforsurvival.Fromtimetotimewehearofjournalistic ethics,butiftheSabrinatreatmentcanbefittedinto suchacontext,thentheword"ethics"hasnomeaning.Onedoesnotnecessarilymeanethicsinthe senseofmoralconduct.Itisapparentlytakenfoi readthatsecularjournalismmustbesteepedin paganism.Thereisanurbaneunconsciousnessof moralguiltinstimulatingthesexualappetiteofthe young.

Butoneislessconcernedwiththataspectfor, seriousasitis.thereisnopointinupbraidingthe unashamed.Wearethinkingnowofethicsinthe moregeneralsenseofreasonableconduct.Inthecase underconsiderationwehavealackofproportion whichislunatic,alackoftastewhichisludicrous andalackofunderstandingofhumannaturewhich unimaginable.

Lastweekourcolumnistwrotewithsomedistaste ofaratherabsurdyoungpersonwho,inanormal societyservedbyarationalandresponsiblePress, wouldhavegoneun-noticedexcept,possibly,bymedicaljournals.Whythenhassheexcitedsomuchinterestandcommentwhenpeopleofrealtalentand distinctionarevirtuallyignored?Theanswerisgiven lessbythereflectionthatsocietyisoffbalancethan thatthePressisroundthebend.Thenewspaper baronstellusthattheyaregivingthepublicwhatit wants.Itisconceivablethatthedayisathandwhen along-sufferingpublicmaygivethePresswhatit deserves-whichisobloquyandoblivion.

Itisamatterofgravitythatsuchwantonwaste ofspaceandunsolicitedsufferingbythepubliccan beengagedinwhenthenationisbattlingforsurvival.Fromtimetotimewehearofjournalistic ethics,butiftheSabrinatreatmentcanbefittedinto suchacontext,thentheword"ethics"hasnomeaning.Onedoesnotnecessarilymeanethicsinthe senseofmoralconduct.Itisapparentlytakenfor readthatsecularjournalismmustbesteepedin paganism.Thereisanurbaneunconsciousnessof moralguiltinstimulatingthesexualappetiteofthe young.

HenotedthatintheencyclicalQuadragesimoAnno PiusXIdeclaredthattheILO'sconstitutioncontained "somanystipulationsinsuchcompleteagreement withtheprinciplesanddirectivesofLeoXIIIthat theyseemtohavebeentakenexplicitlyfromhim."

FinancialGrants ToErectSchools

London,June22.-TheBritishGovern menthasannouncedinParliamentthatit hasreachedanagreementonthecontroversialissueofincreasingfinancialgrantsfor buildingCatholicschoolsinthestatesystem.

EducationMinisterGeoffreyLloyddetailedthe surpriseagreementintheHouseofCommons.Hesaid thatCatholicswerenotgettingalltheywanted,but thattheyhaveacceptedanoffertoraisefrom50to 75percent.theGovernmentaidforimprovingexistingschoolsandforbuildingsecondaryschoolswhere necessaryforcontinuingtheeducationofchildren attendingexistingCatholicprimary(uptotheage01 11)schools.

Catholicsarefacingacolossalbuildingbillunder thenationaleducationprogrammeandhadaskedthe Governmenttopay75percent.ofthecostofallnew schoolswhichtheyconsiderneeded.However,Mr. Lloydstressedthatthesettlementwillgiveaidfor newsecondaryschoolsonlyitneededtomatchexistingprimaryschools.Grantsareunavailablefornew secondaryschoolsunless"matched."

Iwasbornin1940inTatabanya,acoalminingtown inHungary.MyfatherwasabakerandaCatholic. Ihavetwoyoungersisters.Mymotherwasnot'a Catholicwhenshemarriedmyfatherbutwehave alwaysbeenbroughtupintheFaith.

Withthethreeofusmymotherleftallwehadand fledintoGermanyin1944whentheRussianarmy marchedthroughHungary.TheGermanpeoplewere kindtous,butwehadnofood,andwewanderedlike manyrefugees.Wesawsometerriblesightsof woundedsoldiersandairraidcasualties.Mymother helpedallshecouldtonursethesesufferingpeople, butshehadnotraining.

Iwasonlyaverylittlegirl,butIdecidedthenthat Iwantedtobecomeanurse,tohelppeople,notto trytokillthembybombsandbayonets.

WesomehowgotintoAustria,wherebyanaccidentwemetmyfather.ButIbelievethereareno accidents,thatitwasGodansweringourprayers.My motherwassodesperate,withnomoney,foodor shelterforherthreelittledaughters.Howwonderfulitwasforourlittlefamilyalltobeunited.

TheRedCrossandotherrelieforganisationswere goodtous.WechosetocometoAustraliaandreached Northamin1950.Iwas10then.Weleftthemigrationcampthereandwentonafarmfor18months,in theSouth-West.Myfatherworkedinamillandin allhissparetimeonthepieceoflandwehadrented.

Wewereliving14milesfromthenearestCatholic Church,socouldnotgotoMassandCommunionevery day,asIdonowwhenmyshiftspermit.TheSisters ofSt.Josephtaughtmeandmysisters,andImade myFirstHolyCommunionwiththem.LaterBishop Goodyconfirmedme,whenIwas14.

ItookmyJunior,thenIhadtogototheHighSchool astheSistersdidnotteachforLeaving.Ifailedmy Leaving.MybestsubjectswereGeographyand German.IfoundEnglishdifficult,andwishedIcould takeHungarianasalanguage.

SinceIalwayslikedpeoplesomuchandwanted tohelpthem,Idesiredtobeanurse.Iworkedasa domesticinourhospitalintheSouth-Westandthis encouragedmeinmyvocation.AlsoIknewlocalgirls whohadgonetoPerthtotrainfornursing,andthey tooinspiredmetotakeupthiswork.

Iamnearly19nowandamjuststartingmygeneral training.WhenIhavefinishedthisIwanttodoMidwifery.IhopeyouwillallprayformethatIget throughtheexaminations.

Theworkiswonderfulandtheatmosphereofour hospitalverygood.Allthegirlsarefriendly.The Sistersarestrict,butthatisnecessarytomakegood nursesoutofus.

Sometimesthereareunpleasanttaskstodo,butI knewthiswhenIplannedtobeanurse,andamthereforegladofthem.

Idonotsmokeordrink.Weareencouragedto wearmakeuptolookgayandprettyinthewards, butwemustnotwearourhairoverourcollars.

Ihavearoomtomyself,withabed,wardrobe,chest ofdrawers,writingtable.chair.Thefoodweeatis verygoodandweareallowedtomakeourselves snackswhenweareoffduty.Igetupat6andcall theothergirls.ManyofusareCatholicsandgoto MassandCommunioneveryday.Iamjoiningthe CatholicNurses'Guild.

Matronisverykindtomeandletsmehavefour daysoffonceintwomonthssoIcangohometomy familyintheSouth-West.Iwritetothemeveryweek. Wehaveamonth'sleaveeveryyear.

Mysistersare17and13now.Theeldesttookher Juniorwitheightsubjectsandisatypistnow.The youngerisdoingherJuniorandwantstotakeLeavingandthendonursing.Sheismuchmoreclever thanIwas.

Wereceivesufficientpayforourownprivate clothesandpocketmoney.Wepay£3/3/deposit,our uniformisthensuppliedfreeandthemoneyreturned. Wedonotwashourownuniform,onlyourpersonal clothes,etc.

Istudyfivenightsaweek,tillabout10.30or11.0. TheothertwonightsIgotoutvisitingfriendsand dancingattheEmbassy.Iamverykeenontennisand lovemusic.Iwouldliketolearntoplaythepiano, perhapstheSisterscouldfindtimetocoachme.

ThesixthcongressoftheCommunistInternational wasevenmoreexplicit:"Toworkinreactionarytrade unionsandskifullytocapturethem,towintheconfidenceofthebroadmassesoftheindustriallyorganisedworkers,tochangeandremovefromtheirposts thereformistleaders,representimportanttasksin thepreparatoryperiod."

Itwouldbefataltomakelightofthesewords;just asitwasfatalforourfatherstomakelightofHitler's "MeinKampf."

Especiallyisthisthecasewhenyourecallhowwell theAustralianCommunistshavecarried-andare stillcarrying-outtheseinstructions.

RememberthesombrewordsoftheAustralian BishopsintheirjointpastoralonCommunism:

"Australianpublicopiniongenerallyfailedtorealisethatintheyear1945everymajorTradeUnion. withoneexception,wasinthehandsoftheCommunists.AtthatperiodtheBiennialCongressof theAustralianCouncilofTradeUnionswasdominated byaCommunistmajority.

Theyhavetheirpropagandafacilities,organisationalmachinery,powerofcoercionandmoney. HencetheimportanceofhavingsaneUnionleaders.

TheaverageCatholicmaybeforgivenforasking: WhyaretheCommunistssosuccessfulinourunions? Theanswerisnotsimple,butthereseemstobefour causes.

Theapathyofthegeneralmemberstothedanger ofCommunism;theirlackofattendanceatmeetings,evenatimportantelections;theireasy-going attitudetowardsthemenace.

IncontrasttothisisthezealoftheCommunist minoritieswhoarewellorganisedandare"ali out"fortheircause.

Thefactthatmostunionistslookforbetterconditionsandnotatthepoliticalviewsoftheirrepresentatives.TheCommuniststakeadvantageof this

ingonindustrialdevelopment.

OnceelectedtheCommunistsuseanymeansof corruption(especiallybyriggingballots)tostay atthetop.

Dr.LloydRossreportedtotheS.E.A.T.O.conferenceheldinthePhilippinestwoyearsago:"Atpresentthey(theCommunists)haveregainedpartof theirlossesintheWatersideWorkers'Federation,the AmalgamatedEngineeringUnionandtheAustralian RailwaysUnionbutthishasbeenmainlybecausethey haveformedallianceswithmembersoftheLabour Party."

CommunistJimHealycontrolstheWatersiders Union,theUnioninwhichtheHurseysweretreate,i soshamefully.J.J.Brownreignssupremeinthe FederalorganisationoftheRailwayUnion,andMr. BrownprideshimselfonbeingaCommunist.
