HisGracecomplimented theSistersofSt.Josephof theApparitionontheacquisitionofsuchasplendid highschool.Theeight class-roomswouldmeasure upmoreadequatelyto exactingdemandsofeducationalauthoritiesregarding educationalfacilities,he said.

Therewasafinetoneand highstandardintheFremantleschools-atoneand standardthatwererecognisedandappreciatedby theinspectorsfromthe EducationDepartmentwho examinedtheschoolsannually.

Itwassometimessaid, theArchbishopcontinued, thatCatholicschoolswere notuptostandard;thatthe nunhadnomeansofadvancinginherstudies;that shewaspermittedtoread onlythosespiritualbooks givenforherprivatedevotionorthetextbooksshe usedinclass.

Consequently,sheknew noliteratureotherthan thatwhichshereadbefore enteri,ngtheconvent.She wasrepresentedasagenerationbehindtheage,completelyoutoftouchwiththe thoughtsandsentiments actuatingthosewithwhom shewascharged.

That,HisGracecontinued,wasutterlyfalse.Those whowereeducatedbythe nunscouldgive"thelie" tothatgroundlessassertion,fortheyfoundinthe conventinwhichtheywere educatedwomenofculture andrefinement,womenwho hadmadeseriousstudies

andwhocontinuedtostudy, womenwhowerefamiliar withthechiefcurrentsof educationalthought.

"Wecannotimagine," HisGracesaid,"suchdevout andconscientiouswomen devotingtheirlivestothe workofeducationandstill onlyplayingatit,imparting apretenceofknowledgefor therealknowledge,drawingfromthestagnantpools ofantiquatedlearningwhen theirboundendutywasto giveoftherunningstream."

ScholasticRecord OftheeightSisterswho wouldstaffthenewschool twohadtheirB.A.andDip. Ed.degreesfromtheWest AustralianUniversity,five hadtheirTeachers'CertificatesfromtheStateTrainingCollege(Claremont), andonewasacertifiedPitman'scommercialteacher.

Sixothermembersofthe communitywereatpresentattendingtheUniversitywithaviewtoobtain-

inganArtsandDiplomain EducationDegree. Inlastyear'sUniversity examinationstheirstudents secured88percentsuccess intheLeavingCertificate, and82percentintheJunior.Ninetyoftheirexpupilswereteachinginthe EducationDepartment,sixty werenurses;ninetyhadenteredReligiousOrders. Ofthatninety,sixty-five hadenteredtheOrderin Fremantle,ofwhomfiftysevenwereteachinginvariousschoolsinWestAustraliaandVictoria.That wasarecordofwhichany ReligiousOrdercouldbe justlyproud. HisGracethankedthe Sistersonbehalfofall. "MayGodcontinue,"he concluded,"toblessand prosperthenobleworkin whichtheSistersareengagedhereatFremantle, theChristianeducationof thegirlscommittedtotheir care."

Heimmediatelysettoand builtapresbyteryinDudley-st.,whichstillstands today. Hewassucceededbythe Rev.J.Reidy.Theninturn cametheRev.J.McCormack,theRev.J.Lynch (1945-1949),theRev.F. Regan(1949-1950).

In1950HisGracethe Archbishopinvitedthe FranciscanFatherstotake overthearea.Theyarrived inMarchwiththeV.Rev. T.Pearson,O.F.M.,as superior.

Oneofthefriar'sfirst taskswastocompletelyrenovateSt.Brigid'sChurch. Thevirtuallynewbuilding waspackedtocapacityon Feb.3,1952,forthecelebrationofthegoldenjubilee. HisGracetheArchbishop presidedandextolledthe workoftheFranciscan Fathers.

Helaterunveiledabronze tabletcommemoratingthe jubilee.

Inthepastnineyearsthe FathershavegreatlyextendedMassfacilitiesinthe outlyingareas.

Theyhavealsodonemuch toorganisetheyouthofthe township.Anewschool hasbeenopenedatBellevue.

TheParentsandFriends' AssociationofSt.Phillips' regionalschool,TuartHill, arekeentoimprovethe sportingfacilitiesatthe school.

Theseworksalonewould havesufficedtodemon:tratethepossibilitiesof theorganatSt.George's for,whilethePassacaglia unleasheditspower,the Choralesassuredusofthe sweetnessandvarietyofits soloandaccompanying stops.

Ithasanynumberofinterestingandexcitingregistrationswhichittakesa mastertodiscover.

c..1Dupre. Whetheronelikedthe musicornot,onecouldnot denythegreatvirtuosity oftheperformer,forplayingitatall. Particularly Messiaen's "GodAmongUs"musthave beenaherculaneantaskandinterpretingit-few wouldbesoathomewith thisFrenchmusicasthis youngFrenchman,one-time pupilofDupre. Bothconcertsconcluded withimprovisationson themessubmittedonWednesdaybyDr.C.Edgar Ford,andonSundaybyMr. FrankCallaway.

By1921thenumbersintheseniorclassesincreased sothatthedwellinghouseadjoiningtheconventwas purchasedandtothis,theJuniorandLeavingclasses weretransferred. Afewyearslater,theincreasedenrolmentnecessitatedthepurchaseofthetwocottagesnearby,and classeswereagaintransferred.
