ItseemsthattwothingsmadethesuccessofDr. Graham'scrusadeinevitable.Thefirstandbyfarthe moreimportantwastheintensivecampaignbythe membersofmanyChurchesconductedonadoor-todoorbasis.Thatisreallythoroughpreparationand onethatwouldshowgreatreturnsinourownranks wereitdoneconsistentlyandwithunflaggingcharity.

BeforewebegintoexaminewhatDr.Grahamsays, wearefacedwiththedilemma:Isitpreferablefor non-CatholicstohavenoknowledgeofChristthan tohaveapartialorerroneousknowledge?Without makingtheologicalpretensions(andsubject,as always,tocorrection)Ithinkitpossiblethatthe appealofChrist'spersonality,putaspersuasivelyas Dr.Grahamdoes,maytranscendinthepopularmind, thelimitedgambitofthedoctrinesofChristwhich theevangelistputsforward.
ForthechiefhagglewithDr.Grahamislesswhat hetellsofChrist'steachings,thanwhatheomits. ThereisnomentioninhistheologyofaChurch, Christ'sMysticalBody;ofasacramentalsystemor theSacrificeoftheMass.Thenotionofaninfallible teachingauthorityisutterlysupersededbythesurrenderoftheindividualsoultoChrist.Inthisthe uncriticalwaveofemotionofDr.Graham'saudiences overlookstheprimeelementthattheevangelistis virtuallyclaiming:"Christianityistruebecauseit
ThesecondelementofDr.Graham'ssuccesswasthe extraordinaryPresshereceived-anaccoladeof acclamationrivalledonlybytherecentvisitofan actress.Butitexistedandtheexplanationwould seemtobethatthechiefvirtueourPressbaronsfind inChristianityisthatitshouldbepresented"undenominationally."Christianity,itappears,isanexcel-workedforme." lentthingprovideditdoesn'tadduptoanything particularly.
ButtodoDr.Grahamjustice,thatwasveryfar fromhisnotionofChristianity.Hisappeal,apart fromPresspuffingmustbeputdowntohisdogmatism,totheassertionofdoctrineswhichhavebeen longdeadtothe"advanced"sectorofProtestantism, whichhasindeedbeenhisseveristcritics.ThePress initspartisanshipwascompletelydeceivedaboutDr. Graham's"mission."Perhaps"deceived"isthewrong word,forthesecularPresshasratherlessthanno interestinthetenetsofanyreligion.Solongasthe prophetis"colourful"itpursuesitsheadybeliefthat onebrandofhisproductisverymuchthesameas anotherormorepractically,thatnoneofthem amountstomuch.

WhileDr.GrahamwasinthisStatewemadeno comment.PrimarilythiswasbecausehewasprofessedlyaProtestantappealingfor"decisionsfor Christ"amongProtestants.Wehavefoundtheprincipleinvariablethat,inregardtowhatthePress regardsas"topdrawer"news,anykindofpublicity isgoodpublicity.Itwouldhavebeenonourconscience,whetherbycriticismorlimitedpraise,to haveincitedCatholicstoattendhiscrusades.There islittledoubtthat,throughcuriosityontheirsideor plausibility,simplificationorrhetoriconhis,adanger totheFaithexisted,andshouldnothavebeenstimulated.Forwhileevenaprolonged,seriouslapsein moralsmaybewithdifficultyremedied,thelossof faithmaybeirreparable.
IncriticisingDr.Graham,itwouldbeunpardonablyungenerousanduntruthfultocallintoquestion hissincerityorhischarity.Aboveall,Iamconcerned todenywithvehemencethesecretsneerofmaterialiststhatDr.Grahamisinthe"revivalistbusiness" forwhathecangetoutofit.Actually,Dr.Graham

InthatsenseDr.Grahamisarevivalistinthesense ofalife-saveradministeringartificialrespiration. HeistryingtoinfusethebreathoflifeintodisparategroupsofProtestantsthatarepracticallymoribund.Thatwouldnotbetragiciftheirfailureimpelledthemnearerthetruth.Inexperienceitis drivingthemtothekindofdespairhistoricallyknown aspaganism.
Asanexponentofdrasticspiritualheartsurgery Dr.Grahamdiffersfromtheolderrevivalistsonly inthepossessionofthemodernmeansoftraveland communicationandinthatheworksinaworldwhich isonallfoursintellectually,morallyandreligiously. Hehadtheinestimableadvantageinanageofvulgar ostentationofbeing"puffed"bytheHearstPress.
Pragmaticallywhatmattersistheendresultofthe "crusades."Peoplewhomade"decisions"werereferredtotheirownChurches,andapercentageincreaseinProtestantchurchattendanceshasbeennoted. Willitlast?Onewonderswhenthesensation-thirstingcrowdsgatherhystericallyaboutthelatestdumb stagetype.
PerhapsthecentralerrorofDr.Grahamishis notionofconversion.Convertsaresavedthenand thereattheCrusade,byfaithalone.Ourexperience of2,000yearsisquiteotherwise.Afewgreat,isolated Saintshaveknowninstantandpermanentconversion. ForthevastmassofCatholics,forgivenessofsins basedonrenewedeffortsistheusualway.Anditis onthisprecisissuethatthecleavagearises.If theconvertshouldlapse,howisforgivenessassured?
Itisallveryvagueandnebulous.Itpointsupthe needtowhichChristrespondedwhenHefoundedone ChurchtospeakforHiminfalliblytotheendoftime.
Todayitisalltooeasytobefamousifonehas moneyandthePressbehindone.Itiseasytobe famous-onlyonelapbehindinfamous.Sofar.as theorgansofpublicopinionareconcerneditdoesn't matterawhitonewayortheother.
ButinthisparticularaddressofDr.Buchman therearecuriousovertonesofspiritualpridewhich compelcomment.ItwouldseemthatM.R.from beingaleaveningforceinsocietyhasnowemerged asacompellinganddominantinfluenceininternationalaffairs.SomeoftheclaimsmadeinDr.Buchman'sarticlearefairlybreath-taking.
Forinstance,hewritesofM.R.asamajorfactorin thebirthofanapparentpermanentfriendship betweentheformerenemies,GermanyandFrance. Suchaclaimignorestherealitiesofthesepast15 years,thecentraloneofwhichisthatEuropehas beensavedfromtheexternalravagesofCommunism andfrominternaldissensionsbyaseriesofgifted, practicalCatholicstatesmeninthethreekeynations -France,GermanyandItaly.Whenthelitanyof Adenauer,deGaulle,Schumann,Bidaultandde GasperirollsoutitmakesM.R.looklikeverysmall beerindeed.
ButDr.Buchmanhasevenmorepretentiousclaims. ThereareseveralreasonsforCatholicoptimism inJapan,theBishopsaid.
"ThefirstisthatsincethewartheCatholic ChurchisreallyfreeforthefirsttimeinJapanesehistory-Catholicleadersfeeltheynow haveagreaterfacilitytoevangelisethepagan population."
Thisnewfreedomisguaranteedbythepresent JapaneseConstitution.Thereisnosuchthing today,BishopTaguchisaid,asaShintoState religion.Thereare,henoted,13principalShinto sectsand56Buddhistsects,buttheseareinno wayassociatedofficiallywiththeGovernment.

Theycreptinthekitchen.MaryandKevinwere thereroundthewoodstove-itwasgettingcold thosemorningsinMarilup.Kevinhadtogetto workby8o'clocksohehadhisbreakfastfirst.(He wasanapprenticeprinter).
Mr.O'Reillywhowasabuilder'slabourerleft beforeanyofthem,asheworkedindifferentparts alloverthemetropolitanarea.Butsometimestheir motherwasasleep,especiallyifshehadhadabad nightwiththebaby,John,whowascuttingatooth.

Marywasstirringtheporridgefortheirbreakfast. Theirmotherusedtobuyrawsugar,alovelygolden brown,whichtheyhadwiththenicewarmporridge, andtheyhadcupsofcocoa,too.

Thechildrenwereallinterested.FatherGlaube hadtoldthemhowhehadbeenanAustrianboy scout,beforehewenttotheSeminarytolearntobe apriest.TheyknewhowkeentheirAustralian parishpriestFr.MartinandFr.Glaubeweretohave CatholicWolfCubs,Brownies,ScoutsandGuidesin Marilup.
Theyhadtheschoolformeetings,butuptillnow thereweren'tanypeopletorunthescouts.
FatherGlaubetoldthemthataDutchman,who hadnotlonglivedinoneoftheStateHousingCommissionhousesinMarilupwaswillingtobeCub Master,andanEnglishlady,whohadonlyjust movedintoahousetoo,waswillingtobetheBrown Owl.
Therewasonlyonethingworryingthetwins.It wasthesamesillyworrytheyalwayshad.Would itcosttoomuch?Someonehadtopayforthe uniformsandthingsneededandpooroldSt.Thomas's parishwasoneofthepoorestintheArchdiocese.
Theyowedmoneyontheirchurch,ontheirschool, ontheirpresbytery.Alotofthegrown-uppeople hadrafflesandjumblesalesandthings,andmany whowerenotCatholicscametothem,butstillthere wereveryfewpeoplewhoweren'tbattlingin Marilup.

DearReaders,-Ihave experiencedmorejoyand donemoreresearchinto compilingthispagethan anysinceIstartedinApril. ThereasonisthatIammyselfamemberoftheSacred HeartSodality,aPioneer andpromoterof"TheSacredHeart"messagerand hadmyhomeconsecrated totheSacredHeart.

Theheartbeatisassociatedwithlifeanddeath. Doctorsknowifanewborn babyisalivethroughits heartbeat,andtheyknow thatsomeonehasdied throughabsenceofthat heartbeat.
Theheart,nervousinfluences,isprofoundlyaffectedbyallemotions.The factofitsbeating,however, isnotusuallynoticedbya person.
Itdoeschangeconsiderablyundertheinfluenceof emotions,suchasfright, hatred,worryandlove.

TheCardinalhadanhour-longprivateaudience withPopeJohnduringPentecostWeek.HewasaccompaniedbyPremonstratensianFatherWerenfried vanStraaten,DutchpriestwhofoundedtheBuilding OrderandtheAidforEasternPriestsorganisation.
ItwaslearnedthatPopeJohndiscussedwithFather vanStraatenthepossibilityofusingtheBuilding Orderandthepriests'aidorganisationinmaterial supportfortheprojectedSalzburgcentre.
ThePopewassaidtohaveexpressedkeeninterest intheplanstodevelopapan-EuropeancomprehensivecentreofhigherstudiesatSalzburg.
