How,inthefactofall that,couldanyoneaccuse meofsayingthat"therulingdoesnotapplytoAustralia?"
Q.:Nodoubt,onsuchan importantmatter,you wouldnotwishtobemisunderstood.
R.:Ofcoursenot.ButI cannotpreventpeoplewho arebentonmisrepresenting isolatedexpressionstorn fromthecontextofmy statementsfromdoingso.
OnApril14,thefirstnews onthismattercametoAustraliainapresscable, whichwasreadtomeat onceoverthetelephoneby aSydney"Sun"staffreporter.
Itwasasfollows:"Vaticanruledyesterdaythat Catholicvoterscouldnot voteforself-styledChristianpoliticianswhocooperatedinpracticewith Communists.ItsaidCatholicssawtherulingasa warningtoSicilianvoters, whogotothepollsnext monthtoelectaregional council."
TheSiciliancouncilelectionswerea"no-holdsbarred"battlebetweenthe ChristianDemocratsanda "ChristianSocial"group whichbrokeawayfrom themlastyeartoforma regionalgovernmentwith theCommunistsandtheextremeRight.
Theruling,approvedby PopeJohn,didnotmention Sicilyspecifically."
Havinghadthewholeof thatpassagereadtome, andaskedtocommentthen andthereuponit,three pointscametomymind.
Takingfirstthenewsthat a"ChristianSocial"group wasunitingwiththeCommunistsinSicily,Isaidthe rulingwouldnotaffectAustraliainitsapplicationfrom thatpointofviewaswe havenopartiesherewhich haveenteredintoaformal agreementwiththeCommunistparty.,
Secondly,Isaidthat,in applytoAustralia,judgmentastofactsmustrest onproofsandnotmerelyon unsubstantiatedinferences.
Toillustratethat,Iquoted astatement-whichnoone inhissenseswoulddenythatatthelastFederalelectionseveryCommunist wantedtheLabourPartyto win.Knowingthateither LabourortheLiberals wouldwin,Communists muchpreferredthatthe Liberalsshouldnotwin, whomtheyregardasstandingfor"Capitalists,"than theLabourPartywithits interestinthe"workers."
Ipointedout,however, thatthisCommunistpreferencewasnot"proof"that thatLabourhadentered intoanycompactwiththe Communists.
Thirdly,againapplying therulingtoAustralia.I ,saidthat"foraCatholicto voteforaself-styledChristianpoliticianwhohadenteredintoaformalpact withtheCommunistswould beagravesin." ThepresentCodeof CanonLawsaysthat,when assistingatsacredrites whetherinachurchoroutsideit,womenshouldhave theirheadscoveredandbe modestlydressed;butabove allwhenreceivingHoly Communion.
Inaccordancewiththis, Romehasissuedinstructions toBishopsinforeignmissionstointroducethecustomamongnativewomenconvertswhowerenotused towearinganyhead-coveringorwearingsomekind ofhead-coveringatleast wheninthechurch.
Itwouldbetheveryreverseofthatforwomen wherethecustomhasalreadybeenlonginforceto di.,:ardit!
