TheBunburydiocesanreportbyPeterGilesshowed astrengtheningofthe movementinthatdiocesein spiteoflongdistancesbetweenbranchesandthe smallnumbersofCatholic youthavailableineach town.
HesaidthataPre-Cana conferencehadbeenheld forthefirsttimeinBunbury andpositiveactionwas beingtakeninPemberton ontheState-wideproblem ofobjectionableliterature.
OnSundaymorethan threehoursweregivenover totalksanddiscussionson theMass.Ladswhotook partinthissaidthatitwas mosthelpful,thatitshowed howagreaterunderstandingoftheMasswouldhelp themtoparticipateinit insteadofjustattending.

Thishasbeenasubject thathascomebeforemany conferencesinthepast. BertAngusofPemberton branchhasputintocirculationapetitionwhichcalls foractiononobjectionable literaturebytheStateGovernment.Signaturesare beingobtainedandthepetitionwilleventuallybepre- sentedtotheChiefSecretary.

BishopAugusteGaudelofFrejus-Toulonpublished alistoftrafficviolationswhichpenitentshere"must ofinconfession,"whentheycommitthemvoluntarily.
Amongthemwasspeeding,passingwithoutadequatevisibility,takingthewheelwhiledrunkor semi-inebriated,drivingwithoutlights-eitheron purposeorbecauseofnegligence,and"takingrisks ingeneral."
TheBishop,inexplaininghisdecision,saidthatall whotravelonthestreets,driversandpedestrians alike,musttakeintoconsiderationthefactthatthe seriousliabelitiesentailedintrafficviolationsare sometimesevengraver.

HisfirstgreatachievementintheFarEastwas hisworkindraftingtheliberalJapanesepeacetreaty, wherebyJapanregainedhersovereigntyin1951.At thattimeMr.DulleswasactingthroughtheappointmentofformerPresidentHarryS.Truman,whohad senthimonhismissionwiththepowertospeakfor theUnitedStates.PresidentTrumanearlierhad enlistedMr.Dulles'servicesasabuilderofthe AlliespeacesettltmentwithJapan.
DuringhismissiontoJapan,Iheardthestatesman outlinesomeofhisideasbeforeaTokyoPressClub audienceinFebruary,1951.Herecalledthathehad beenamemberoftheUnitedStatesdelegationtothe peaceconferenceafterWorldWarI.Hetoldusthat hestronglyopposedanythingvindicativeorany crushingburdensofreparationintheJapanese-treaty.
Therewasnobigconferencehagglingoverpeace termsatthattime.Mr.Dullesperformedthenegotiationsinaser'esofshuttletripsacrossthePacific. andtheAtlantic.
OnthemorningthatGeneralDouglasMacArthur leftJapaninAprilof1951-recalledfromhispostby PresidentTruman-Mr.Dulleswasflyingtoward Tokyoononeofhispeace-makingmissions.Astheir planespassedeachotherofftheJapanesecoast,these twomentowhomthenewJapanisindebted,exchangedradiomessages.
Mr.Dullesneverencouragedtheillusionthatby merepacifismcouldmandischargehisdutiestodefendhisfamilyandhiscountry.HeearnedthehostilityoftheCommunistsandtheirsympathisersin theFarEastbyhisprinciplesandhisactions.The South-eastAsiaTreatyOrganisation,partofthe world'sdefenceagainstCommunistaggression,was hiswork.
AsSecretaryofState,Mr.DullesstoodfirmlybehindPresidentNgoDinhDiem,whenDiemwas strugglingagainstgreatoddsin1954and1955to keepsouthernVietnamanditsnearlyonemillion refugeesfromfallingtotheCommunists.TheFrench politicianswantedtogetridofDiemasanobstinate nationalist,andFrenchdiplomatsandjournalists- -echoedbysomeAmericans-foretoldhisfailureand downfall.
ButwhilehiscriticswereblastingDiemanddiscussingwhoshouldreplacethispracticalandfervent Catholicleader,ahighAmericanofficialtoldmethat Mr.Dullesrefusedeventodiscussapossiblesuccessor.
IinterviewedPresidentDieminSaigononthe firstanniversaryofhistakingoffice.Againstallforecasts,hehadlastedayearandhadgainedsupport. DuringtheinterviewhetoldmethatoneofthecongratulatorymessageshehadreceivedwasfromSecretaryDulles,whosaid:

Admittingthatthisisalltootrue,itseemsanomalousthattheTreeSocietyshouldproposeplanting treesinthemidstofthewildernesswhichhasjust beencreatedbybulldozingthem.

Manyofthepatientshave roomstothemselves,and thehospitalthroughoutis tastefullydecoratedand pleasant.Lovelyflowers bloominthegardens.There isaccommodationforthree marriedcouples.
Anew36bedhospital wingisgoingtobeconstructed.Asthereareabout 20peopleatthepresent timewantingverymuchto comeinto additionthehospital,this isanessential.
