AconvertinaSouthAustraliantown,whowas toldprivatelyabouttheenquirycentresomemonths ago,offeredtomovewithhiswifeandfamilytoSydneyifbydoingsohecouldhelpthework.

TheMonsignor'sannouncementcameas70 bishopsandpriestsentrustedwithpreparingforthe synodheldtheirfirstmeetinghere,atwhichtheydiscussedabout200suggestions drawnupbysub-commissions.

In1947hewenttoSt. Patrick'sCollege,Manly, N.S.W.forhistheological course.Hewasordainedat St.Mary'sCathedralon December2,1950.

Afterservingasassistant- priestatKalgoorlieand WestPerth,Fr.Dillonwas appointedfull-timemilitarychaplaininSeptember,1954. DuringhisperiodinWestPerth,Fr.Dillonrevived theCatholicBoyScout movementswhichnow functionsinfiveparishes.

Duringtheweekthe titleofhonoraryconsultingoralsurgeonwasconferredonMr.C.D.HendersonbytheMinisterof Health,theHon,R.Hutchinson,ata Henderson'smeetingof associates.

Thehonourwasconfer- redinrecognitionofMr. Henderson'sservicestothe PerthDentalHospitaland theWestAustralianCollege ofDentalScience. Oneofthefoundation groupwhichformedthe DentalHospitalin1927,Mr. Hendersonbecamepresident ofthehospitalanddeanof thecollegein1936.Heretainedtheseofficesupto 1941.

BorninVictoria,Mr. Hendersoncametothis Stateasayoungman.He waseducatedatSt.Patrick'sSchool,Perth,and registeredasadentistin 1913.

Heservedasadentalof RicerduringWorldWar'1 andmarriedondemobolisationin1918, Since1920hehasbeena memberoftheDentalBoard andwaspresidentin1955.

DuringtheSecondWorld WarMr.Hendersonserved forthreeyearswiththe plasticsurgeryunitat Heidelberg,Victoria.

TheawardoftheC.B.E. in1950foroutstandingservicesindentalsciencetook cognisanceofhiswarrecord.

Mr.Hendersonhasbeen aFellowoftheInternational CollegeofDentistssince 1930andwassometimeregentinAustralia.

In1957hewasawarded aFellowshipinDental ScienceoftheRoyalCollegeofSurgeons. HewasmadealifehonorarymemberoftheAustralianDentalAssociation in1948, AparishionerofSt. Brigid's,WestPerth,from 1919to1951,Mr.HendersonnowlivesatClaremont.

LastyearVoxgaveus theBeethovenNinthonone recordof64minutesplayingtime;nowtheyhave donealmostaswell,these twosymphoniestaking59 minutia.

Everyotherrecordingof theSeventhoccupiesafull 12"record,exceptforaninferiorrecordingbyaminor Americanorchestraona 10".Thisrecord,then,is superbvalueformoney.

Thecriterionofrecord collecting,however,must betheperformancenotthe work.Itismoresatisfying inthelongrun,topaymore forafirst-classperformance.

HowdoesthisrelativelyunknownconductorcomparewithKlemperer,Karajan,ToscaniniorFuertwangler?Bynomeans sobadlyasyoumightthink. Aboveacertainlevelofexcellence,onecanonlyfol-

lowpersonalpreference.Is ToscaninibetterthanKlemperer?Theargumentcan goonforhours;bothare excellent.

Thisperformance,especiallyoftheSeventh,comes wellupintotheverygood andvergesontheexcellent. Itisdynamic,crisp,well balanced,withinstrumental detailclearandvivid.

Therecordingisexcellent, eventhedouble-basses comingthroughclearand undistortedandthetuttis arecompletelyfreeofmush. Wellworthconsidering.

Thisdiscistakenfrom thecompleterecordingissuedsomeyearsago.The selectionsmadearegood, consistingofthebestknown andbest-lovednumbers.

Themostsurprisingthing aboutthisversionisthe appearanceofHildeGueden asGilda,theprincipalfemalelead.Guedenis,of course,Vienneseor,atleast herspiritualhomeisthere.

AnenchantingMozart singer,weareinclinedto thinkheralittlesoubrettish,anexcellentDespina, CherubinoorZerlina.

PierreMonteuxsteersa masterlycoursebetween theScyllaofover-emotionalismandtheCharybisof restraint,twopossiblefaults intheinterpretationof Tchaikovsky.Afterall, Tchaikovskyisemotional andpassionatebut,onthe otherhand,heisnothysterical.

IratherthoughtMark Mendelawitz(playingthe ownerofthedancehall) wasmutedjustatrifletoo muchinthescenewhenhe claimedthe£10,000damages,andhadtopacifythe managerofthechorusgirls (playedby JohnMcGuire).

Theunseenbutnotunappreciatedworkwasdone byFrankGoodman,Lorna Moylan,GlenysSmith,Phil Neri,andotherTherries. Thedecor,byGeraldine Carrington,waseffective.

RobertCollopypresented thePerthdiocesanreport whichshowedthedefinite expansionthathastaken placeoverthepasttwelve monthsandalsoadecided improvementinefficiency onabranchanddiocesan level.

TheBunburydiocesanreportbyPeterGilesshowed astrengtheningofthe movementinthatdiocesein spiteoflongdistancesbetweenbranchesandthe smallnumbersofCatholic youthavailableineach town.

HesaidthataPre-Cana conferencehadbeenheld forthefirsttimeinBunbury andpositiveactionwas beingtakeninPemberton ontheState-wideproblem ofobjectionableliterature.

OnSundaymorethan threehoursweregivenover totalksanddiscussionson theMass.Ladswhotook partinthissaidthatitwas mosthelpful,thatitshowed howagreaterunderstandingoftheMasswouldhelp themtoparticipateinit insteadofjustattending.

BrianWaltersaspresidentmovedfromgroupto groupandlatercommented: "Itwasmostinteresting, eventhrillingtohearyoung fellowsworkingoutadeeperappreciationoftheMass."

TheStateconferenceof theYoungChristianWorkers'Movementadopteda plan fromPemberton branchtocombatindecent literatureinthisState.

Thishasbeenasubject thathascomebeforemany conferencesinthepast. BertAngusofPemberton branchhasputintocirculationapetitionwhichcalls foractiononobjectionable literaturebytheStateGovernment.Signaturesare beingobtainedandthepetitionwilleventuallybepre- sentedtotheChiefSecretary.

ThePembertonpetition wasapprovedbytheY.C.W. conferencewhichwillcall onallbranchesintheState togoaheadwiththework ofcollectingsignatures.

BishopAugusteGaudelofFrejus-Toulonpublished alistoftrafficviolationswhichpenitentshere"must ofinconfession,"whentheycommitthemvoluntarily.

Amongthemwasspeeding,passingwithoutadequatevisibility,takingthewheelwhiledrunkor semi-inebriated,drivingwithoutlights-eitheron purposeorbecauseofnegligence,and"takingrisks ingeneral."

TheBishop,inexplaininghisdecision,saidthatall whotravelonthestreets,driversandpedestrians alike,musttakeintoconsiderationthefactthatthe seriousliabelitiesentailedintrafficviolationsare sometimesevengraver.

HisfirstgreatachievementintheFarEastwas hisworkindraftingtheliberalJapanesepeacetreaty, wherebyJapanregainedhersovereigntyin1951.At thattimeMr.DulleswasactingthroughtheappointmentofformerPresidentHarryS.Truman,whohad senthimonhismissionwiththepowertospeakfor theUnitedStates.PresidentTrumanearlierhad enlistedMr.Dulles'servicesasabuilderofthe AlliespeacesettltmentwithJapan.

DuringhismissiontoJapan,Iheardthestatesman outlinesomeofhisideasbeforeaTokyoPressClub audienceinFebruary,1951.Herecalledthathehad beenamemberoftheUnitedStatesdelegationtothe peaceconferenceafterWorldWarI.Hetoldusthat hestronglyopposedanythingvindicativeorany crushingburdensofreparationintheJapanese-treaty.

Therewasnobigconferencehagglingoverpeace termsatthattime.Mr.Dullesperformedthenegotiationsinaser'esofshuttletripsacrossthePacific. andtheAtlantic.

OnthemorningthatGeneralDouglasMacArthur leftJapaninAprilof1951-recalledfromhispostby PresidentTruman-Mr.Dulleswasflyingtoward Tokyoononeofhispeace-makingmissions.Astheir planespassedeachotherofftheJapanesecoast,these twomentowhomthenewJapanisindebted,exchangedradiomessages.

Mr.Dullesneverencouragedtheillusionthatby merepacifismcouldmandischargehisdutiestodefendhisfamilyandhiscountry.HeearnedthehostilityoftheCommunistsandtheirsympathisersin theFarEastbyhisprinciplesandhisactions.The South-eastAsiaTreatyOrganisation,partofthe world'sdefenceagainstCommunistaggression,was hiswork.

AsSecretaryofState,Mr.DullesstoodfirmlybehindPresidentNgoDinhDiem,whenDiemwas strugglingagainstgreatoddsin1954and1955to keepsouthernVietnamanditsnearlyonemillion refugeesfromfallingtotheCommunists.TheFrench politicianswantedtogetridofDiemasanobstinate nationalist,andFrenchdiplomatsandjournalists- -echoedbysomeAmericans-foretoldhisfailureand downfall.

ButwhilehiscriticswereblastingDiemanddiscussingwhoshouldreplacethispracticalandfervent Catholicleader,ahighAmericanofficialtoldmethat Mr.Dullesrefusedeventodiscussapossiblesuccessor.

IinterviewedPresidentDieminSaigononthe firstanniversaryofhistakingoffice.Againstallforecasts,hehadlastedayearandhadgainedsupport. DuringtheinterviewhetoldmethatoneofthecongratulatorymessageshehadreceivedwasfromSecretaryDulles,whosaid:

Arecentarticleinourmorningcontemporaryby theStatePresidentoftheTreeSociety,drewattention tothecommendableobjectsofhisorganisation.This groupisprimamilyconcernedwithinculcatingin youngpeopleanappreciationofthebeautiesofnature andaninstincttopreservethem.Thewritercomplainedthat"ouryoungfolkconfinedtosuchunnaturalsurroundingsanddeprivedofbushlandplay- groundssoonlosetouchwithnature.Theyhave beenherdedintoawildernessofbricksandmortar. Wehavesetthepaceofdestructionwithourbulldozersandhavereplacednaturewithmileaftermile ofmonotonousstreetsandhouses."

Admittingthatthisisalltootrue,itseemsanomalousthattheTreeSocietyshouldproposeplanting treesinthemidstofthewildernesswhichhasjust beencreatedbybulldozingthem.

TheFarEastfoundinformerSecretary ofStateJohnFosterDullesaWesternstatesmanwhodealtwiththemaccordingto Christianprinciples.

HisfirstgreatachievementintheFarEastwas hisworkindraftingtheliberalJapanesepeacetreaty, wherebyJapanregainedhersovereigntyin1951.At thattimeMr.DulleswasactingthroughtheappointmentofformerPresidentHarryS.Truman,whohad senthimonhismissionwiththepowertospeakfor theUnitedStates.PresidentTrumanearlierhad enlistedMr.Dulles'servicesasabuilderofthe AlliespeacesettltmentwithJapan.

DuringhismissiontoJapan,Iheardthestatesman outlinesomeofhisideasbeforeaTokyoPressClub audienceinFebruary,1951.Herecalledthathehad beenamemberoftheUnitedStatesdelegationtothe peaceconferenceafterWorldWarI.Hetoldusthat hestronglyopposedanythingvindicativeorany crushingburdensofreparationintheJapanese-treaty.

Therewasnobigconferencehagglingoverpeace termsatthattime.Mr.Dullesperformedthenego- tiationsinaser'esofshuttletripsacrossttePacific aridtheAtlantic.

OnthemorningthatGeneralDouglasMacArthur leftJapaninAprilof1951-recalledfromhispostby PresidentTruman-Mr.Dulleswasflyingtoward Tokyoononeofhispeace-makingmissions.Astheir planespassedeachotherofftheJapanesecoast,these twomentowhomthenewJapanisindebted,exchangedradicmessages.

Mr.Dullesneverencouragedtheillusionthatby merepacifismcouldmandischargehisdutiestodefendhisfamilyandhiscountry.HeearnedthehostilityoftheCommunistsandtheirsympathisersin theFarEastbyhisprinciplesandhisactions.The South-eastAsiaTreatyOrganisation,partofthe world'sdefenceagainstCommunistaggression,was hiswork.

AsSecretaryofState,Mr.DullesstoodfirmlybehindPresidentNgoDinhDiem,whenDiemwas strugglingagainstgreatoddsin1954and1955to keepsouthernVietnamanditsnearlyonemillion refugeesfromfallingtotheCommunists.TheFrench politicianswantedtogetridofDiemasanobstinate nationalist,andFrenchdiplomatsandjournalists- echoedbysomeAmericans-foretoldhisfailureand downfall.

ButwhilehiscriticswereblastingDiemanddiscussingwhoshouldreplacethispracticalandfervent Catholicleader,ahighAmericanofficialtoldmethat Mr.Dullesrefusedeventodiscussapossiblesuccessor.

IinterviewedPresidentDieminSaigononthe firstanniversaryofhistakingoffice.Againstallforecasts,hehadlastedayearandhadgainedsupport. DuringtheinterviewhetoldmethatoneofthecongratulatorymessageshehadreceivedwasfromSecretaryDulles,whosaid:

TheBrailleSocietyhas beeninexistencefor45 years.ItfunctionsatBraille Hall,113Newcastle-street, wheretheofficesandwelfarecentrearesituated, andalsoatitsresthomefor theagedblind,14Sunburyroad,Victoria Thereareabout1,000 blindpeopleintheState. Ofthesesomeserviceofone kindoranotherisprovided forabout843ofthem.The societyaimstogiveblind peoplegreateropportunities, teachthemreadingand writing,totryandturnas manyofthemaspossible intonormalcitizens.

Forthosewhogoblind laterinlifeadjustmentis moredifficult,butatthe BrailleHallblindpeople arebeingtaughtandencouragedtogainskillin makingthingsforthemselves.

BOOKSINBRAILLE

TheBrailleSocietyruna freelendinglibraryservice ofbooksprintedinbraille. Thedictionarydefinesthis as"asystemofwritingor printingfortheblind,by meansofcombinationsof stampedpoints,"anditis calledaftertheinventor LouisBraillewholived from1809-52.

Iexaminedandtouched thesheetsofabookwhich ''.'asbeingproofreadbya blindmemberoftheir staff.Thelettersaremade upofsixoftheseembossed dots,inalltheirvarious positions.Thepaperused issimilartoparchmentand costs2id.asheet.Thislady couldreadattalkingspeed. Shemusthavehadvery sensitivetipstoherfingers tofollowthedotsintheir variousgroupingssoswiftly.Thebookshewasworkengonwas"ThatNone ShouldDie"byFrank Slaughter.

Theyhaveabout20voluntarywriterswhoproduce lessonbooksinbraille. Therearealsothreeprisoners,meninFremantle gaol,whochosetohelpto producebraillebooks.In spiteofthelabourbeing voluntary,asisthehelpof theGovernmentPrinting Officewhoputonthebacks andcoverthesebooks,their actualcostisabout£20 each.

Farlesscanbeputona pageinabraillebookthan inanordinaryprintedbook forpeoplewithsight.A dictionary,forinstance,

runsto36volumesin braille.

Recentlyoneofthe society'sblindpupilsobtainedworkwithaGovernmentDepartmentasa switchboardoperator.He neededatelephonedirectoryinbrailleofthevarious Governmentdepartments. TheFremantleprisoners producedthisforhim within24hours.

Thesebooksaresentpostagefreetoblindpeopleall overtheState.Theyare postedinspecialcanvas containerswithacardwhich hasthereader'saddresson onesideandthatofthelibraryontheotherside, whichgoesintoaspecial slotwithatransparentplasticwindow.

HANDICRAFTSTAUGHT Basketmaking,weaving, toys,andthemakingof plasticbagsaretaughtto blindpeopleeveryTuesday andThursday.Different factoriesandfirmsdonate theplywoodwhichthe pupilsinoneofthehigh schoolscutoutforthebases ofthebaskets,andtheyalso givescrapsofmaterialout ofwhichvoluntaryworkers withsightmakegay cushions,aprons,etc.

Ilookedattheworkproducedbytheblindandit wasexcellent.Thesearticlesaresoldatthefete whichisheldannuallyat theresthomefortheblind inVictoriaPark.

Itmeansalottoblind peopletobeabletogain skillinmakingthingsfor themselves.Peoplewho havebeenactiveandcanno longerseetopursuetheir earlierinterestssoonlose theurgetodevelopothers. TheBrailleSocietytriesto fillinthisvoid.

Theofficestaffareall blindpeopleandIwatched ayoungmanandayounggirldoingtyping.Their specialshorthandmachines produceaseriesofdots, whichtheycanthenread backbyfellingthem.

Amongstthoseblind peoplewhohavefoundemploymentarealecturerin economicsattheUniversity andalawyerworkingin St.George's-terrace.

Ayoungmanwassentto Londontotrainasaphysiotherapistandhassucceeded inhisIntermediateexaminationandisnowinthe secondhalfofhisthreeyear

TheBrailleSocietyvisits agreatmanyoldfolkin theirownhomes.Manyof thesecannotlearnbraille andappreciatehabinga bookreadtothem.Theboys ofScotchCollegegoat week-endsandevenings andreadtothem.

HOSPITALFORAGED BLIND

Thereare76oldpeople inthisresthomeinVictoria Park,40ofwhomareover 80,sixorseveninthe90's. Theyoungestis58.Astaff of30Sisters,nursesand domesticsruntheplace. Therearenotmanyofthese oldpeoplewhodonothave additionalcomplaintsbesidesbeingblind.

Manyofthepatientshave roomstothemselves,and thehospitalthroughoutis tastefullydecoratedand pleasant.Lovelyflowers bloominthegardens.There isaccommodationforthree marriedcouples.

Anew36bedhospital wingisgoingtobeconstructed.Asthereareabout 20peopleatthepresent timewantingverymuchto comeinto additionthehospital,this isanessential.

Financeis,ofcourse,the problem.Charitiesgive £1,000perannumtothe workandtheStateGovern-

mentanother£1,250,also thereareprivatedonations. ButtheBrailleSociety couldwelldowithalot morefinancialsupport.

WHATWECANDOTO HELPTHEBLIND

Therearealotofwaysin whichwecanhelpthe splendidworkthatisbeing donefortheblind.Apart fromstraightoutfinancial help,anyonewithacaris particularlyneededtodrive blindpeoplefromtheir homes.

Ifsuchpeoplecouldbring theseblindmenandwomen totheafternoonsocials, theycouldthengooffand dotheirshoppingbetween 2and4andbringthem homewhenitwasover.

Thosewhohavespare fruitandvegetablesmight heabletosendittothehospital,whereitwouldalways bewelcome.Groceriesof anykindwouldalsohelp. parcelsofclothingwould alsubepracticalassistance. Alsolinenwoulehelp.
