ShesettledinBeverley withherhusbandwhohad arrivedthreeyearsearlier andresidedthereforthe next25years.Inthattime sherearedafamilyoffour sonsandthreedaughters.

Thefamilymovedto QuairadingwhereMr.Mcdonnelldiedin1943atthe ageof84years.

Mrs.McDonnellcontinued inresidencethereuntil4 yearsagowhenadvancing agecausedhertomoveto Glendalough.

Throughtheinfirmities incidentaltoadvancedold ageMrs.McDonnellisratherinactive,buthergeneral healthisregardedassatisfactory.

Rev.Fr.E.O'Halloran,the parishpriestofGoomalling washurtinafallthroughtheroofandceilingofhis churchonMay6.

Whilehelpingtwoofhis parishionerstomendthe roofofthesacristy,Father slippedandfellthroughthe roof. Heeventuallylandedon thevestmentpressinthe sacristyandthenfinally cametorestonthefloor.

Afterbeinghelpedtothe presbytery,Fatherarrang- edhisaffairsandwasthen takentothelocalhospitalwhereitwasfoundthathe hadbadlyfracturedhisarm andhadsufferedother minorinternalinjuries.

London,May18.-HisEminenceWilliam CardinalGodfrey,ArchbishopofWestminster,accusedadversariesofusing"unworthy means"todiscreditBritishCatholicsseeking moreStateaidfortheirschools.

HisEminencewasreferringtoastatementbythe generalsecretaryoftheFreeChurchCouncil,the BritishUnitarians,toanaudienceofMembersofParliament,thatmorepublicmoneyshouldnotbegiven totheCatholicschoolsbecauseCatholicsowed"a temporalallegiancetoatemporalruler"otheerthan thatoftheirowncountry,meaningtheHolyFather.

"Idonotknowwhetherthosewhousethisunworthymeanstodiscreditusrealisethattospeakthus notonlyfalsebutistoofferagraveaffrontbothto ourpeopleinthisislandandtothemillionsofCatholicsintheBritishCommonwealth,"CardinalGodfrey said.

ManyofthefathersandsonsofthoseCatholics laiddowntheirlivesforKingandcountry,theCardinaladded.Itwas"anunworthyassertionmade byouradversaries,"heasserted.

HisEminence,whowasaddressingCatholicteachers ataspecialserviceinWestminsterCathedral,London, saidtheargumentthatCatholicsshouldnotbegiven furtherpublichelpineducationwasanoldone.

Catholicsalwaysfounditdifficulttounderstand why,ifChurchschoolsarealegallyrecognisedpart ofthenationaleducationsystem,theyshouldremain silent"whentheyarethreatenedwithbeingcrushed outofexistencebytheincreasingburdensplacedon them."

TheCatholichierarchyneverconsideredthatthe agreedsettlementregardingtheirschools,madewhen thenationaleducationsystemwasoverhauledin 1944,wasmeanttobepermanent.

"TheCatholichierarchyneverconsidereditso," CardinalGodfreysaid."Howcouldthey?Times change,costsrise,demandsfornewbuildingsare madeandourpeoplestrugglebravelyontofulfilthe demandsmadeuponthem."

BishopAndrewBeck,A.A.,ofSalford,thehierarchy'sspokesmanoneducation,alsohitbackatthe FreeChurchesfortheircampaignagainsttheCatholic schools.StatementsthatCatholicsareaskingfor morepublicmoneywithoutpubliccontrol,andsuggestionseventhatProtestantmoneywouldbeused tohelpCatholicteachingaremisleading,theBishop saidattheopeningofanew£140,000Catholicschool inManchester.

FreeChurchesCampaign

Asregardspubliccontrol,representativesofthe localeducationandtheGovernmentschoolauthoritieswouldconfirmthat,apartfromthereligiousinstruction,Catholicschoolsaresubjecttothesame standards,inspectionsandrequirementsasallother schools,theBishopadded.

TheFreeChurches'campaignagainstincreasing grantstotheCatholicschoolsabovethepresent50 percent.hasresultedintheGovernment,decidingto postponetheneededlegislationalreadyadmittedas necessary.R.A.Butler,HomeSecretary,speaking asdeputyofPrimeMinisterHaroldMacmillan,announcedthisintheHouseofCommons.

ItisunderstoodthattheGovernmentdoesnotintendtopresentsuchlegislationfortheHouse'sapprovaluntilithasalreadybeenapprovedprivately byallparties,asitwishestoavoidpublicreligious controversy.

Somepoliticalobserversbelievethatthismatter maybeshelvedentirelyuntilaftertheGeneralElectionexpectedtobeheldattheendofthisyear,for fearoflosingvoteswhateverisdecided.Catholics wantthegrantincreasedto75percent.

The"Tablet,"Catholicweekly,commentingon theFreeChurchopposition,said:"Thesearestrange ChristianswhowouldliketoseeCatholicchildren beingtaughtbyteacherswhomaynotbelieveinany formoftheChristianreligion,insteadofbythosewho willteachthemastheirparentswouldwishthemto betaught."

TheLabourPartyis boundbyarecentruling whichreversedtheparty's previouspolicyofaidto privateschools.Itsmembers,therefore,canhardly beregardedasfreeinthe matter.

Nevertheless,theTasmanianPremierdeclared thatthepolicyoftheGovernmentis"nottodiscriminateordoanythingtomilitateagainsttheinterestsof parentsofchildrentattendingnon-Stateschools."The LiberalandDemocratic Labourleadersweremore explicit. Inthelightofthese statementsofpolicythe Hobart"Standard"stated thatCatholicsneedmake noapologyindecidingto casttheirvotesinaccordancewiththeirviewson thepropositionofthepartiesonthesubject.

This,thepapersaid,was theone,clear,moralissue beforetheelectors.All otherissueswereconcerned withservicestothepoblic, ormethodsofattaining agreedobjectives.

The"Standard"remarkedthatinthisCamolics werenotconcernedonly withthemselves;theywere concealed,too,fornonCatholicparents,boththose sendingtheirchildrento denominationalschoolsand thosewhowishtosend thembutforwhomnosuch schoolwasnowavailable. Theywereconcerned,also, forthewelfareoftheState asawhole.

ThataspectwasemphasisedbytheLiberalLeader oftheOppositioninTasmania,whosaidthatithad nowbeenclearlydemonstratedthatdenominational schoolsplayedavitalpart intheover-allStateeducationsystems.

Itwasbutjustice,there-fore,toassistthemassuch.

Rome,May15.-Red-ruledCzechoslovakianow needsatleast1,800more piestsandthatnation's clergyshortageislikelyto getworseinthefuture,an officialofthePontifical NepomuceneCollegehere hasreported.

Thecollegeistheonly seminaryforCzechoslovakia approvedbytheHolySee. Its13studentshopetoreturntotheirhomelandone dayand causedundothedamage therebycommunist persecutionandpressure. CollegeofficialsarelookingforyoungCzechoslovaks,particularlyinthe U.S.andCanada,whowant totrainforamissionin thelandoftheirorigin.

Today,accordingtothe lateststatistics,Czechoslovakiahas5,338priests, aboutoneforeach1,550of thefaithful,whototal 8,247,000andaccountfor approximately70percent ofthenation'spopulation.
